Race Preview
Ian: "A categorised climb at the start, at high altitude, followed by about 100km of descending, followed by a very flat finish which should see a mass sprint unless the peloton are sleeping and allow someone away."
Ian: "Today the main aim is to ensure Wilko keeps the yellow jersey for another day which should be pretty easy with such big gaps already created. Then we'll see what he can do at the end in the probable sprint."
Ian: "My role today is to help Wilko if it does come down to a sprint, which it really should. I will give it my all to drag him to the line but there are some of the strongest leadout trains in the world here from Sky, BMC and Rabobank, so it will be extremely quick."
Race Report
After McEvoy and Blain put in some hard work to bring back a large break including fifth place Leukemans, a smaller group of six riders were allowed away. The best rider was Langeveld, again, with Moyano, Jerome and Frattini were also present.
Today it was Rabobank and Sky bringing the break back for their sprinters, Renshaw and Boasson Hagen. They were flying along now and the breakaway stood no chance of surviving.
As the break was caught, Oliver Zaugg of Radioshack tried to escape the fast-moving peloton. A strange decision as he isn't very strong on the flat anyway. He didn't last very long.
Rabobank were the team driving it along in the final five kilometres with Bibby and Wilkinson both in their train. Sky had Flecha on the front but Boasson Hagen was way back behind Thomas and Eisel with no chance of getting to the front for the sprint.
Then a massive pile-up in the middle of the peloton caused carnage and a split in the peloton which would see around seventy riders lose two minutes today. The biggest names left behind were Brajkovic, Sagan, Danielson, Ballan and Tiralongo.
A really, really odd sprint was won by Renshaw ahead of his team mate Bol. Bennati, Blythe and Vermeltfoort completed the top five, with Bibby, who was meant to be leading out Wilkinson, taking a remarkable sixth! Wilkinson came in fifteenth.

"Erm... that was a bit weird! I was just leading Wilko out but he couldn't hang on to my wheel and I just kept going. Rabobank were all over it with a 1-2-5 but the rest just didn't turn up. Sky had a nightmare so they will want to make amends tomorrow. Look at the top quality sprinters that I managed to beat though. The might of Zaugg, Hermans, Uran and Cusin!! Luckily, all of our guys were on the right side of that crash so we're still in a good place with one more flat stage coming where we need to defend the lead."

Race Preview
Ian: "This stage is completely flat, so defending the yellow jersey should be pretty easy. Add to that the fact that there are so many sprinters here with their teams working for them and it points to a definite bunch sprint."
Ian: "Same as yesterday with Wilkinson being the key focus as we look to keep the leader's jersey for one final day before the race gets tough again."
Ian: "Nothing to say here other than exactly the same as yesterday. I will be leading Wilko out at the end, hopefully he can keep my wheel this time!"
Race Report
Again, the break took numerous attempts to form but when it did it was bigger than yesterday, with ten riders being present. The biggest names were Geraint Thomas and Nick Nuyens, but the best placed was Aramendia, over four minutes down.
Today, it was Liquigas and Rabobank lending us a hand at the head of the peloton. Sagan was obviously feeling better than he has been in the last couple of days. The gap to the leaders soon came down. Two riders had heavy crashes today and had to abandon, Roy Jans of An Post and, more importantly, Ballan for BMC.
Coming into the final, with the break long caught, it was Liquigas and Rabobank still on the front trying to set up Sagan and Renshaw, respectively. On the left, you can see Wilkinson being brought to the front on Bibby's wheel. Sky were nowhere to be seen again.
But it was Mark Renshaw who confirmed his superiority here as he saw off the challenge of Peter Sagan. Bennati was third again ahead of Boivin, Kocjan and Blythe. Wilkinson managed twelfth with Bibby two places further back. Boasson Hagen was down in eighteenth. Whatever Sky's plan is, it isn't working.

"That was a lot more hectic than yesterday at the end and we just couldn't get up there in the sprint, but at least Wilko could keep up with me this time! Everybody in the team has really enjoyed the first three stages, as you'd expect, defending the yellow jersey in such a big race with the eyes of the world on us is fantastic for the sponsors and for us riders. There will be people from all sorts of different countries that are now Ian Wilkinson fans, which is great. Maybe even some Bibby fans! Now, however, is time to return to the hills and mountains, and time to let the big boys have a go. We'll see what JTL can do on tomorrow's summit finish."

Thanks a lot dienblad and baia, I'm really enjoying the career so it's easy to do the story.
I'll try sutty, but the next stage is a little bit out of his comfort zone.

May 18, 2012 - Amgen Tour of California Stage 4
Race Preview
Ian: "The first of two summit finishes in this race, this is where the Tour will really start for the GC contenders. The stage may be short but the climbs of Mount Hamilton and then the steep final climb will open the time gaps up."
Ian: "Well, Wilko has done superbly but he will be swapping his yellow jersey for the polka dot one tonight. JTL is the leader today and we may try to get someone in the breakaway just incase it succeeds."
Ian: "I am now approaching my absolute peak and I will really try my best to stay with the front today. With this competition, though, maybe not! I'll help JTL as we hit that final climb though, that's for sure."
Race Report
At the start there was the usual multiple attacks until a group of nine looked like it had established itself, with Fleeman making it into this group. However, Garmin weren't happy and brought it all back together.
In the end, the break was made up of just two riders, Brajkovic of Astana and Liquigas' Koren. Neither of them were major threats as they had both lost a lot of time on the first two stages.
Over the tough climb of Mt. Hamilton, Tom Danielson was ripping the peloton up. As they hit the summit, the "peloton" contained just ten riders, both Fleeman and Tiernan-Locke in there for Endura. However, the next group caught back up on the descent, including Bibby, Camano and Wilkinson.
Onto the final ascent and Ryder Hesjedal was looking to capitalise on Garmin's hard work by putting in the first proper attack. Schleck responded straight away with Poels, Uran and Evans also following along with several others.
And as breakaway survivor Jani Brajkovic tied up at the very top, Schleck came around him to take the win by eight seconds. Hesjedal saw off Evans with Horner, Navarro and Samu Sanchez also finishing well. Tiernan-Locke finished a brilliant fifteenth ahead of Kloden, a little over two minutes down.
Wilkinson had had a really tough day and it was just a relief to see the finish line. He came in with Kai Reus, Boasson Hagen and Romain Sicard, showing how well he did today. Now his focus switches to winning the KoM competition.

"Well I now know what it's like to ride in World Tour stages. HARD! The pace was relentless today with Garmin just riding on the front all day to try to give Hesjedal the win but Schleck is just a level above everyone else. At one point I was riding in a group alongside Samuel Sanchez, Rob Gesink and Wiggo which is just incredible on a tough stage like this. I'm enjoying this race, in a sadistic kind of way!"

Not to bad with a top 30 on the stage. Any chance you might gain some time on Brajkovic to move into the top 25 in GC?

@ olabj, well, we'll have to see. Ian might pop into a breakaway later on if the possibility is there. There's still a long TT to come but most of the people around him can time trial anyway.
@fcancellara, I know, it's disgusting isn't it. Just not good enough!

May 19, 2012 - Amgen Tour of California Stage 5
Race Preview
Ian: "Stage 5 takes the peloton well over 200kms over some seriously lumpy terrain. This will be arguably the hardest stage of the race because of the distance and the amount of climbing."
Ian: "Back to plan A today, which is working for JTL and trying to get someone into the breakaway. Wilkinson has a decent lead in the KoM classification but if he could win some climbs today, he can virtually sew it up."
Ian: "I'm in as good shape as I'm gonna be all season but this stage does not suit me. It's too hilly and too long. Of course, I will do everything I can to stay with JTL but I might ease up near the end anyway to save myself for tomorrow's TT."
Race Report
He may have lost the yellow yesterday but this wasn't going to stop Wilkinson today. He was back out there to try and clinch the polka dot jersey and did very well, taking maximum points at the first two categorised climbs. He was in a breakaway that was eleven-riders strong.
Unfortunately for the breakaway, Radioshack, pretty much the strongest team there's ever been at the ToC, were controlling it very easily today. Zaugg, Cancellara and Hermans were on the front from start to finish to ensure the break wouldn't make it to the end.
The high pace set by Radioshack over the climbs caught out numerous riders who were sitting too far back in the peloton. The main losers were LL Sanchez and Oroz, both of whom would lose their decent GC placings today. Oroz was up in 17th but not anymore.
With the very small peloton approaching the final drop into the finish, Evans tried to get away and gain vital seconds on Schleck but Kloden and Zaugg weren't going to let that happen and the stage would definitely end in a sprint. Only Tiernan-Locke was present in this group for Endura but the likes of Sagan and Boasson Hagen were not.
And the sprint of the climbers was won by Ryder Hesjedal, the Garmin man just outsprinting Uran in the white jersey. Poels took third after trying a very late attack with Tiernan-Locke a superb sixth, just behind Schleck and Sanchez. Only twenty riders were in this lead group, with Bibby Endura's next finisher, four minutes down.

"Ouch, that was a long, long stage. I was fine until that final climb, but I wasn't the only one, there were riders just falling out the back all the time at the end in ones and twos, a really hard stage. Great effort by JTL today, hopefully he can do something similar on Mt Baldy to stay in the top fifteen. I don't know how much I'm gonna have in the tank for the TT tomorrow but I hope to do a good ride. Obviously, I have no GC aims but it would be nice to beat Wiggo and Cancellara!! On the GC front, I somehow managed to stay 26th despite everyone coming in in small groups today. Maybe that's where I'm meant to finish here!"

Wilkinson has blown good style
Let's hope that JTL or yourself can put some pride back into the Endura family

Tiernan-Locke's got to bring a good result in California! That, or Bibby win a race, perhaps from a break.

I wouldn't say Wilkinson's blown sutty, he's just returned to where he should be! He can't climb with Schleck and Evans over that sort of stage!
We're trying to get a result but these guys are a bit good! TT coming up later;

May 20, 2012 - Amgen Tour of California Stage 6
Race Preview
Ian: "A medium-length time trial in Solvang that will shake up the GC again before tomorrow's key mountain stage. A gentle rise to the intermediate checkpoint that's followed by a more severe drop into the finish. Effort management is key though, with a false flat section at the very end."
Ian: "Well, JTL will lose a lot of time here unfortunately. Long TT's are his major weakness so it's about limiting losses for him. Partridge, Camano and myself will be trying to get a good result."
Ian: "I will be going for a top 20/25 here today and anything better would be amazing. Some of the best time triallists in the world are here so there is no chance for a top ten realistically."
Race Report
Young American prospect Taylor Phinney was the first man to go under 34 minutes and with no real reference point at that moment, nobody really knew how good his time was. He knocked early leader Mouris off the top, and also saw off Boom and Langeveld.
But Liquigas' Maciej Bodnar made sure that the American wouldn't get the win with a time fifteen seconds quicker than the BMC man. It was still very early in the day though so the victory seemed unlikely for the Pole.
Rob Partridge was hoping to go quickly today and at the checkpoint, he was quickest! Unfortunately, he faded in the second half and went second, five seconds off Bodnar's time.
Spanish time trial champion, Luis Leon Sanchez lost a lot of time yesterday and he wanted to make up for it here. The course suited him and he beat Bodnar by seventeen seconds. A superb time by the Rabobank man.
The surprise of the day went to Oroz of Euskaltel, another rider who lost a bucket of time yesterday. The climber managed to beat Sanchez by eight seconds to be the provisional fastest. He is clearly in supreme shape.
But Oroz's time didn't last long. Cancellara was out on course and, as you'd expect, he breezed past Andre Cardoso with seven kilometres still to go. He crossed the line and went an incredible 56 seconds quicker than Oroz! Stunning time, surely unbeatable.
Bibby wasn't having a good day with his legs deserting him when he needed them most. Nevertheless, he kept a nice constant pace and did a 33'20, 1'11 down on Cancellara. A top twenty five was out of the question for Ian as even Camano beat him by five seconds. He managed to beat early pacesetter Bodnar though.
Andreas Kloden was never going to beat his team mate here but he was the first guy to get within 20 seconds of him. Provisional second for the German as the GC contenders hit the course.
Tiernan-Locke was out there and unfortunately for him, he had Wiggins right behind him. Brad was on fire and managed to beat Cancellara by one second to almost certainly seal the stage win. JTL really wasn't enjoying himself and finished 71st, 1'57 down on Wiggins.
The only man that could now beat Wiggins was Cadel Evans, but the Aussie could only go third, seven seconds down. The battle for the yellow jersey, though was won by Hesjedal, whose time was good enough to take thirty seconds over Cadel and Schleck into the final two stages. Great stuff from the Canadian.

"That was a nightmare for us. JTL lost three places and he has a battle on his hands to get back into the top fifteen now. For me, I just didn't have the legs today. I felt a bit lethargic and over that distance, there's nothing you can do but take it a bit easier. Everyone will be working for JTL tomorrow apart from whoever manages to get into the break, fingers crossed it's me. I fancy a bit of punishment in the mountains, why not?"
