It looks to be a very strong startlist here as many of favourites came to the Tirreno this year instead of the Paris-Nice (won by Vinokourov). You have to have money on either Nibali or Scarponi winning here but look for the likes of Wiggins/Froome, Rodríguez, Horner and Cunego looking to upset the favourites. The sprint stages will likely be won by either Freire, Sagan, Appollonio, Boonen or Hushovd.
(I haven't got a team screenshot for this race due to my computer problems but we have Fedrigo for the GC and Geslin on the sprints)

I didn't expect much from this race to be honest. We don't have a very good GC contender and Bonnet and Geslin aren't top quality sprinters. |

Summary:
Overall, not a great race for us as we didn't even manage a Top 20 with Fedrigo. Hopefully the fitness gained from this race can be put to good use in the MSR. Rodgriquez seemed to be like Vino in Paris-Nice, unbeatable. I am also surprised with Carrara as he showed good form to finish in 4th place here on a tough Tirreno-Adriatico. Up next anyway is the Milano-Sanremo, the first monument of the season |

The 2012 race of Milano-Sanremo brings us to the first Monument of the season and one where everyone will look to score a big win for their respective teams. The 298km race is one of the longest on the WorldTour calendar and many riders will not finish the race. It will be the 103rd edition of this prestigious race and we hope that the race will live up to expectation and be a fantastic race.

An amazing startlist here with so many favourites involved. I think though that due to the strength of both the BMC and Sky squads that a winner will come from either team. Gilbert showed he was in fantastic form in the Tirreno, as did the Sky trio Froome, Porte and Wiggins. We must not forget the World Champion Mark Cavendish but I think that many will try to drop him before the Cipressa and Poggio so he has no hope of repeating his 2009 success. Outside of those select few you have Hushovd, Cunego, Gerrans, Valverde, Cancellara and after his 4th place at the Tirreno Carrara may be able to surprise a few by possibly taking the win. Either way the race is going to a tough battle and the FDJ team are going to throw themselves into the mix and we hopefully can come away with a Top 10. |

With Casar, Fedrigo and Geslin all in decent shape here we are looking to challenge for a Top 10 here in Italy. It will be tough to achieve our aim here as the startlist looks very strong and after the way Gilbert dominated Stage 6 in the Tirreno, you can bet he will be the odds-on favourite here. Our plan is simple, we will use up Roux, Roy and Offredo on the hills/climbs and set a punishing pace to split the peloton and hopefully remove the sprinters from the equation at the end and leave ourselves with an elite group of punchers and favourites from which we may be able to spring a surprise attack on either the Cipressa or Poggio. |

Favourites: Gilbert (BMC), Cunego (Lampre), Froome (Sky)
Things only really settled down here in Italy at around the 100km mark. A 6-man break was finally established containing Danielson (Garmin).
On the run-up to the Passo del Turchino we send Offredo to the front of the peloton to try and test some of the sprinters legs on the gradual incline.
While he dropped no-one, he actually succeeded in catching the early breakaway and did manage to string the peloton out quite nicely.
We had the first crash of the day and it was Nibali (Liquigas), he wasn't exactly a favourite here but his team will miss him if he fails to make it back. Meanwhile a 3-man break went away containing Boom (Rabobank).
We hit the bottom of Le Manie and it had become a 5-man group with Visconti (Movistar) and Rast (RadioShack) bridging the gap. Vanmarcke (Garmin) wasn't too far behind and they all had around 5 mins on the peloton.
We sent Offredo to the front up the climb and this time he succeeded in splitting the peloton! 77 riders were left behind including Rodriguez (Katusha), Fuglsang (RadioShack), Carrara (Vacansoleil), Gerrans (GreenEDGE), Valverde (Movistar) and Sagan (Liquigas). We still hadn't managed to lose most of the sprinters for some reason and Cavendish was sitting pretty in the front half of the peloton.
With 77km still to go, Cancellara (RadioShack) tried his luck with a strong attack but it was met with a huge increased of pace from BMC and Sky!
Fortunately, he was brought back with 50km to go and we had Tosatto (Saxo Bank), Visconti, Boom and Rast out front with a 2 min advantage.
Cancellara attacked again with 38km to go but this time he brought some danger men with him in the form of Chavanel (OmegaPharma) and Haussler (Garmin). This could prove to be a strong attack!
But still BMC and Sky would not let anyone go and it was all back together with the break being caught at the foot of the Cipressa. 72 riders remained in the front group.
We used up our last helper, Roy on the Cipressa to try and drop the sprinters that remained and any other favourites out of form and we got the peloton down to 63 riders but still both Boonen (OmegaPharma) and Cavendish remained!
Attacks were coming thick and fast in the final 15km with Nuyens (Saxo Bank), Chavanel and Voigt (RadioShack) going off the front and TDU winner, Ballan (BMC) and Vansummeren (Garmin) following a few metres behind.
At the foot of the Poggio they still had 30 seconds on the peloton. We had sent Casar and Fedrigo up to the front to try and bridge but it wasn't having much effect!
Flecha (Sky), Leukemans (Vacansoleil) and Paris-Nice victor Vinokourov (Astana) managed to bridge on the Poggio and on the descent they still had a 30 secs gap.
BMC could not pull back any time on the descent and with 2.5km to go it looked as if the 9 rider front group would decide the MSR!
Breschel lead out the sprint with 1km to go and looked to have got the jump on some of the other riders...
But no! Flecha, Nuyens and Vino were coming back at him with 500m to go!
Oh my God! Flecha came with an incredible turn of speed and looked the favourite to win the sprint and the 2012 MSR with only 300m left to go!
The Spaniard wins it! I don't believe it! What a brilliant strategy Flecha had there, the Sky man simply sat in Breschel's wheel and launched himself with 500m to go! Amazing! What a victory! Breschel was 2nd for Rabobank with Nuyens 3rd for Saxo Bank.

Summary:
A fantastic race in the end and it gave us a very surprising winner! BMC and Gilbert must be kicking themselves after losing out on the winning move on the Poggio. But well done to the Top 9 riders who played it perfectly and managed to get away at the crucial moment. We had 2 in the Top 25 which isn't too bad but I would have liked a Top 20 result. Either way it was a fantastic race to be part of and I only wish we had managed to repay the hard work put in by Roy, Roux and Offredo earlier in the race. Well done to Flecha and the Sky team!

Too bad you couldn't join the decisive move. Now the sprinters took away any chance for you getting a good result.

@ tyriion: Yeah my riders were slightly back a bit going up the Poggio and couldn't make the jump that Vino and co. did
@ Ste117: I know but pleased we managed to stick with the favourites like Gilbert etc. Glad you liked my tactic didn't exactly remove the sprinters in the end but got rid of some of the better riders in the race |
