Today we race in Rund Um Köln, a German 1.1 race. Too bad that in PCM we race the route of GP Plouay.... Normally the route looks like this:
And in 2010 the race ended in a mass sprint, and JJ Haedo took the win:

Our team:
Marc de Maar is in a 12-man BOTD, with R. Bolohvisciks, J. Bellis and E. Baumann as other known names. With over 80km to go, he slowly rides away and th egap to the peloton is over 6 minutes.
With 40km to go, the lead is still 1'53 to a group of 21: 6 SaxoBank, 5 Monster, 5 CCC, 2 Miche, 2 NetApp and 1 NSP-rider.
When we look in the back of the chasing group, 3 Saxo's have been dropped: LS Haedo, Morkov and Gustov.
One lap of 15km to go. De Maar is still in the lead, with 40 seconds advantage to the 17 chasing riders.
When De Maar almost gets caught, Wout Poels is the next to give it a go. He creates a 20 second gap, but the remaining Saxo's and CCC's get him back. With 1.5km to go, all is together!
With the last km climbing, Andy Schleck decides to be the leadout for Pim Ligthart. Ligthart is the better sprinter and knows that the last few hundred metres are almost flat. Andy's pace is that high, that the 2 get in front!
And what a great tactic! Ligthart passes Schleck with 400m to go and takes the win! Schleck even manages to finish 2nd, so a great double for the team. Bartosz Huzarski from Team NetAPP takes the third place.
A very happy Ligthart can go to the podium and get some deserved kisses!

The winner:
A great race for the team and our morale. We know that the opposition wasn't that strong, but I must say that the way we followed our tactic (getting one rider in the BOTD, so we could save energy, and always stay the first part of the peloton so we don't get surprised, and then try it in the last part of the race and have someone for the sprint) was great!
Next stop: Tour de Romandie!

The Monster Energy - Ford team will be present in the Tour de Romandie. Th race is to prepare ourselves for the Giro D'Italia! The Tour de Romandie consists of 6 stages, 2 of them are time trials. The other stages are hilly, with chances for the sprinters and the puncheurs, instead of the climbers.
Anyway, we think that we can score some important points for the CQ-ranking here, that we need to promote to the World Tour next year!
Last year's edition was surprisingly won by Slovenian Simon Spilak (Lampre)

The Tour de Romandie starts with an almost flat 3.5km short prologue. The first rider to set a great time is Sky's David Millar: 4'47.
Joost Posthuma is 8 secods slower, and will be the fastest Monster rider today, in a slightly dissapointing 27th place.
Andreas Klöden comes really close to the time of Millar, losing it by less than a second.
Sprinter Theo Bos does a great job: 4'56, 40th place.
Last year's winner Simon Spilak finishes in a disappointing 50th place in 4'57 (the same time as Robert Gesink).
New best time! Saxo's Gustav Erik Larsson is 3 seconds faster than Millar, in 4'44!
Tony Martin looks like she's gonna beat Larsson's time, but is a little slower, 4'44 as well.
Then comes Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen. What a great ride: new best time. 4'41 for the Sky-cyclist.
The last to start is Vincenzo Nibali. He rides a 4'48, 6th time.
So the win is for EBH!

2nd stage: 172.5km from Martigny to Leysin, with the difficult part in the last 25 kilometres. Two first categorized climbs, first the Col du Pillon (7.1km, 5.1%) with it's summit 22.5km from the finish and a mountaintop finish to Lesin (5.7km, 6.2%).
11 riders form the BOTD: Jerome (Eur), Maes (QSt), Klemme (Leo), Lagutin (VCD), Rodriquez & Ochoa (And), Lequatre (RSh), Mizourov (Ast), Tosatto (SBS), Corti (Geo) and Hansen (OLO). They get a maximum lead of 9 minutes. For those interested, these are the KOTM and sprint ranking:
Spoiler
KOTM1: Jerome-Maes-Klemme + 7'00
IS1: Tossato-Lequatre-Mizourov + 8'00
KOTM2: Rodriguez-Lagutin-Maes + 1'10
IS2: Lagutin-Klemme-Jerome + 1'15
When the last climb has began, Adam Hansen and Andrey Mizourov have attacked out of the group and are the last being caught with 4.5km to go.
Robert Gesink and Jelle Vanendert set an extremely high pace. WIth 3.5km Vanendert drops the pace a bit, so Gesink suddenly gets a 9 second gap.
Vincenzo Nibali is the only one who reacts. With 2.5km to go, they have a 20 second advantage to the peloton. At this moment Igor Anton tries to make the jump.
1.5km to go: Further down the road, Gesink jumps away from Nibali. The Italian is getting accompanied by Anton. Jelle Vanendert and Irish Nicholas Roche follow the 3 leaders at 20 seconds, while Boasson Hagen is swimming between them but looks exhausted.
No one can beat the Condor from Varsseveld (for those who want to know, this is a little town in the East of Holland were Gesink is born, it's almost completely flat there) in the Tour de Romandie today. He gets his 3rd win this season and the first in the World Tour! Anton utsprints Nibali for place two 12 seconds behind. Vanendert gets a great 4th at 24 seconds.
Another Monster win!

Well, to be honest... we're very happy with the stage win (one goal reached!), but it wasn't our intention to lead the GC already. A luxury problem, but first some nice glass wine of wine tonight to celebrate it!

Stage 3: 172km from Romont to Romont, over hilly terrain with the summit of Le Gibloux (1st cat, 5.3km, 6.2%) 16km before the finish.
Of course there is a breakaway, with some good riders in it: R. Feillu (VCD), S. Kruiswijk (Rab), S. Vanderbergh (Kat), M. Cardoso (RSh), D. Champion (ALM), S. Turgot (Eur), F, Masciarelli (Ast) and Y. Eijssen (BMC). Themaximum lead is 8 minutes. Luckily for us, Euskaltel is doing the pace in the peloton and slowly reels them in.
The KOTM and Intermediate sprints:
Spoiler
KOTM1: Feillu - Kruiswijk - Vandenbergh + 8'00
IS1: Kruiswijk - Champion - Vandenbergh + 3'44
KOTM2 (Le Gibloux): Feillu - Kruiswijk - Champion + 2'00
IS2: Feillu - Champion - Kruiswijk + 56
At the summit of Le Gibloux, Feillu, Kruiswijk and Champion create a gap and those 3 will fight for the win.
Igor Anton tries to escape from the peloton. But the Monster's work hard to get him back and succeed in it.
With 1km left, Romain Feillu has created a little gap and it looks like he's gonna take the win.
Yes, he is! A great result for him and his Vacansoleil-team. Steven Kruiswijk gets 2nd (29 seconds back) and Dimitri Champion the 3rd place.
55 seconds after Feillu, Jelle Vanendert is the first to cross the line of the peloton. 92 riders are in it, among them all the favourites.

Don't think it is too early. Gesink, Vanendert and Kelderman have about 85-90 now, so the form will grow. The best - placed rider in the break was 5 minutes back, that's why we let them go. When the gap would get too big, we would started to work.
I think Gesink won't win Romandie, he won't good enough in the 20km ITT and it's difficult to (re)gain the time in the other stages (think he'll lose some time against Nibali, EBH, maybe Klöden, Millar or Larsson).
We'll see how it continues!

Stage 4: 166km from Thierrens to Neuchatel. Almost flat, but 2 climbs in the last 45 kilometres: Enges (6.5km - 6.9%) and Lignieres (2km - 7.1%). The last summit is 20km from the finish.
Geoffrey Lequatre is the first to cross the line for the first Intermediate sprint. But who's in 2nd there? Robert Gesink! He gains 4 important seconds!
Gesink slows down and continues in the peloton, whereas Lequatre is joined by 6 others: Roelandts (OLO), Stamsnijder (Leo), Wyss (BMC), Vantomme (Kat), Garcia Acosta (Mov) and Pelucchi (Geo). They get a maximum lead of seven minutes. Then De Greef and Dumoulin chase up the pace in the peloton to catch them. Roelandts wins the 2nd IS (53km to go), in front of Lequatre and Stamsnijder. The advantage is cut back to 5'41.
When they start climbing, the advantage becomes smaller again, thanks to the Monster Energy team. Danilo Wyss wins the KOTM-sprint of the Enges, with Pelucchi in 2nd and Vantomme in 3rd. The lead is 2'33.
18km later, Garcia Acosta wins the 2nd KOTM-sprint, in front of Stamsnijder and Vantomme. The lead is only 1'31. Looks like it's gonna be a mass sprint!
Chute... chute! A crash in the descend! We see last year's winner Simon Spilak on the tarmac, together with sprinter Ben Swift. Spilak neds up losing 5'41, so no new win for him!
But that's not all! Around the corner, we see some more riders on the tarmac: sprinters Mark Renshaw and Greg Henderson are among them!
98 riders continue the chase, and with 5km to go it's almost together. Lequatre leads the BOTD, but the gap is less than 20 seconds.
The preparation for the sprint is a total mess. We try to give Theo Bos a chance, but the former track-rider is too exhausted after the hills. Puncheurs as Pablo Lastras and Maxime Monfort try to surprise the sprinters. Also Vanendert and Gesink are sprinting for the win. With 1km to go, it's Garmin's Heinrich Haussler who is in the lead. But look at the guy in the white jersey on the right of the road: will Edvald Boasson Hagen take the win?
Yes he can! What a great sprint by the Norwegian super talent. EBH wins in front of Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel) and Gerald Ciolek (Quick Step). The best placed Monster Energy - rider is Jelle Vanendert on place 9.

EBH:
It will be tough to defend the lead. The ITT has always been a weak point from Gesink, but he has trained a lot last winter to improve his timetrialling abilities.

The ITT. 20km from Aubonne to Signal-de-Bougy. The route is very hilly. The maximum height difference is 234metres!
The big favourite to win this ITT is HTC's Tony Martin. Although the normal stages went pretty bad for him, he puts on an excellent performance, and the fastest time so far: 31'54.
Joost Posthuma is the best of our team so far with 28 seconds behind Martin (10th place total).
David Millar (Garmin - Cervélo) comes pretty close with the 2nd best time so far, 15 seconds behind Martin.
Andreas Klóden (Radioshack) loses some valuable time at the start, because he didn't put his glasses on the right way, but managed to get the 3rd time, 20 seconds behind Martin.
Then Jelle Vanendert: TT isn't is greatest hobby. He starts to fast and loses some time in the last part: 57 seconds behind, 37th place.
Nicholas Roche (AG2R) is 9 seconds faster than Vanendert, 27th place.
Igor Anton is very fast in the first uphill part, but has to settle with the 18th time at '37.
The favourite for the GC-win: Edvald Boasson Hagen has the same split time as Martin, but loses 4 seconds in the 2nd part: 2nd place.
Vincenzo Nibali disappoints a little bit with the 7th place, at 23 seconds.
The last rider on the route is Robert Gesink. He rides a very good first half (the climbing suits him better) but loses some time in the second part. He needs 32'14 to stay in the lead, and he gets................. 32'14, 5th place

OMG! 1 second! Well, for sure we have a tactics meeting for the last stage. Reason: similar to the 4th stage where EBH took the win. When he does it again, he will win the GC as well.
But first a good night's sleep to think it over!

Last stage, from Champagne to Geneve. 165km, with 2 1st-category climbs: Col du Mollendruz (9.4km-5.5%) and Col du Marchairuz (6.6km-6.0%). The summit of the last climb is still 60km before the finish.
After the tactics meeting, we have a plan how to defend the leader's jersey: don't care if a break gets away, make the race very tough on the two climbs to drop Boasson Hagen. When we don't succeed in that, we don't mind if the breakaways stays up front.
And of course we get a breakaway: D. Klemme (Leo), G. Caruso (Kat), D. Loosli (Lam), M. Cardoso (RSh), F. Willems (OLO), M. Tosatto (SBS) and A. Mizourov (Ast). They get a maximum lead of 10 minutes! Dominic Klemme is the first to cross the line of the first KOTM-sprint, just in front of Giampaolo Caruso and David Loosli.
The Monster Energy team rides up the mountain very fast, with the goal to lose EBH.
And they succeed in it! EBH has been dropped, and is one minute behind at the summit.
The BOTD doesn't feel like sprinting for the first Intermediate sprint. Loosli is first, in front of Manuel Cardoso and Klemme.
EBH can thank the guys from Vacansoleil, who bring the chasing group back to the peloton. So far plan A.
David Loosli is the first one the Col du Marchairaz. 2nd for Caruso, 3rd for Cardoso. The lead is cut down to 5'40, thanks to our team that sets the pace in the peloton. Unfortunately, no GC-contenders have dropped back. So we decide to let the breakaway win the stage and control the race.
With 24km to go at the 2nd Intermediate sprint (results: Cardoso-Tosatto-Mizourov), the gap has increased to 8 minutes! Mizourov is the best placed rider in the breakaway, 6'40 back. This means he is in virtual yellow now. So our riders settle on front of the peloton and raise the pace.
8km to go: Giampaolo Caruso is the first to attack out of the breakaway and only Frederik Willems can follow. Both are dramatic sprinters, so this is their only chance to win the stage. The gap to the peloton is 7'07, so Mizourov still has virtual yellow.
4km to go, and the Italian and Belgian have a 30 second gap to the chasing group. The peloton is 6'10 back, so Gesink is back in virtual yellow!
Sprint-a-deux: Giampaolo Caruso is the best non-sprinter and beats Willems. Caruso deserves the win, because he set up this last attack!
Then we have to wait 5'16 for Gesink to cross the finish! He even sprints to 11th place. Our first stage race-win and our first World Tour-win!

The GC-winner:
Word from the DS: we fulfilled our goals, with a stage win and top 5 in the GC. But to take the win, is a big surprise in this strong field. We knew that the most important stage was stage 2, where Gesink showed that he is a Giro-win candidate. But the most important win in this Tour de Romandie was the ITT. Gesink lost only 20 seconds to the best ITT-rider in the world, and that makes us looking at the coming Giro D'Italia with a lot of self-esteem!
