Anybody knows why my username changed from Alakagon to Alakagom ? It sounds so strange Grin

I was thinking in my head. ""ike omg I never realised it was a "m" and not a "n" ". Strange.
My username was changed slightly too. It used to be an uppercase "V" and then one day I noticed it was different. I like the lowercase "v" better anyway though.

Tour of Oman

The Tour of Oman is a six day stage race held in Oman. It was first held in 2010 but already with many stars, which start their season in the desert of Qatar and Oman in mid-February. Similar to Qatar the riders expect a heavy wind, which makes the race interesting.
This year's edition is totally flat with a 26 km long time-trial at the end. It’s a paradise for the sprinters, but the overall GC winner will be probably decided on the last stage, whom will be best rider against the clock.

Our original plan was to bring E.B. Hagen here as our leader, but Sky had a change in plans, and the squad was selected, from the riders with the lowest preparation and fitness over the winter, to prepare in this hot climate for the long season ahead. Our best rider in terms of fitness is Xabier Zandio with 69 points. The lowest fitness has a kiwi Greg Henderson, with only 61 points.

Rest of the riders is somewhere in between, though having three good sprinters we will decide on the first stage who will be our last sprinter to sprint. Flecha will be our main lead-out man, but when the winds will play the role, he will turn into our main sprinter.

The GC opposition

As the overall classification will be vastly decided at the last time-trial here we have the favourites, Thomas being the best time-trialer is the biggest favourite and should win. We also hope for podium place with Froome. As you can see there are some good time-trialers but nobody really good. So sprinters will fight for bonus seconds to hold their overall place before this time-trial.

Tour of Qatar was a battle between two riders, Andre Greipel and Alan Davis, and they both ride in Qatar as well. It is gonna be some task to beat them in the final sprint, but our team will try best to do so. Though we have three good sprinters, their form is not really good, and some may be reduced to role of team-mates, to sacrifice for one rider. We will decide in the race who will our main sprinter, depending on the strength of the wind and how the feel on the day. Some less know sprinters will have their chances, if they have a good form.

@FreitasPCM I know Grin , he was always at the top, and on the last stage he surprisingly didnt loose a lot of time, he was the most consistent out of all riders, great surprise and good start to the season for him.

First two two or three stages of Oman coming up tomorrow.

Tour of Oman - Stage 1

The profile is as expected flat, no sprinter should have any problems, but if the force of nature will play a role, this stage can get intresting. Though for the first stage of Oman the weather forecasters predict almost zero wind which is quite good for us. Not having anybody in form, no strong wind will at least don't drain our riders energy for the last kilometres as much.

Tour of Oman 2011 is about to begin.

Almost every race has an breakaway, and Oman happens to be no exception. No dangreous riders, so we expect them to be caught before the finishing line.

5km to go, break as expected was caught, we still wait to set up our train, we want to time it perfectly so all of of three sprinters has a chance, even the first one to go.

1.6km to go and Flecha did amazing job on the last kilometre to bring our sprinters up the field, Henderson looking good, though his fitness is showing already having his red bar almost half empry, we think we can pull it off. The timing was perfect, now we jsut wait and see.

And yes, Greg Henderson takes the victory, Ben Swift rounds out the podium and Thomas get 6th, Sky Cycling is really happy with the result, the timing was perfect, and Flecha should get a lot of credit for bringing our guys up the field. Very surprisingly we take the victory we didn't expect on the first stage, as the form really wasn't there. It just proves our boys determination.

I am wondering as well Rolling Eyes Only Davis and Greipel are only ones from the big guns present but didn't show much today.

Tour of Oman - Stage 2

Surprise, surprise another flat stage through the desert. Though this time there is strong wind, forecasters predict very strong winds thorough today’s stage, because of that, I doubt Henderson, Swift or Thomas will have much energy left for the final sprint.

So our sprinter will be Flecha, who already has a decent form in his preparation of defending his Omloop het Niewusbald title.

Favourites: Alan Davis, Andre Greipel, Greg Henderson
My secret tip: Robert Förster impressed with a good 5th and he might do even better today.

Usual staff, the break is out there, our three riders control the peleton, and with help from other teams in the peleton, I can't see the break make it to the end.

The wind played a role in today's race and spillted peleton in serval parts, though with 20km to go, the peleton was compact and the riders with most energy left after battling with the wind will fight it our for the win.

7km to go and the trains start to appear, as yesterday we want to time our train perfectly, though this time most of our riders are running out of energy, which will make it much harder.

2.5km to go and our train looks good, Flecha is out of picture, but looks the strongest out of our team, we don't want to sprint to early and we will try to sprint only at the 1km mark.

And Flecha takes it, with an imense acceleration at the last 1000 metres he outsprinted already tired sprinters and takes the overall from Henderson. Jeremy Hunt takes 7th and thanks from Flecha as his lead-out rider on the last 2km to go.

At the end our best three spirinters didn't have it in their legs and will hope for less windy day tomorrow. Flecha starts his season perfectly and showed everybody he is a seriuos contender for the secodn in the Omloop.

Tour of Oman - Stage 3
Saifat Ash Shiekh – Qurayy

Saifat Ash Shiekh to Qurayy is the journey for the riders on stage 3 on the Tour of Oman. The 139km course takes the peloton across the northern coast, the nearby sea can create gales and strong winds. Though forecasters don’t predict strong wind, everything can change in seconds.

My secret tip: Igor Abakoumov was 4th and 2nd, he is the most consistent out of all sprinters and should be a threat today.

Unfortunately my PCM crashed, at the 10km mark and then somehow simulated the results, that never happened to me before but there is nothing I can do now.

Till the 10km mark, the race was an usual Tour of Oman type of stage, with medium strong winds, a breakaway and long stretched out peloton. As usually the breakaway was caught, and Sky looked to be in good position for the mass sprint. Here are the results.

Well, my secret tip won, we really can’t complain, we got ok 4th and 5th, I would expect better, but it isn’t really as horrible as I thought the PCM would simulate the stage. Though we lost the overall to Igor we hope to get it back on the next stage, hopefully we will have more luck.

Tour of Oman - Stage 4
Ibri–Nakhal

Stage 4 is another flat stage across the Northern part of Oman, from Ibri to Nakhal. The winds are peaceful, so again breakaway doesn’t stand much chance. Maybe Davis and Greipel will show something today, after disappointing on the last 3 stages.

Favourites: Alan Davis, Andre Greipel, Greg Henderson
My secret tip: Greg Henderson, we really want to win this stage, to get back into points jersey contention, so we will do anything to get Henderson his second win.

At the 55km, the break are caught, and unexpectedly the wind is strong and may play the role today, the peloton is already stretched out.

With 25km to go the peloton has split, all our riders are in the front group, there habe one minute advantage, will they hold ? Most favourites are in this group, but Davis and Greipel missing again.

3km to go, the strong wind made it very hard to create train and now every rider rides for himself, we really want to wait until last 1km to sprint as in such wind our riders will ‘die out’ if they sprint too early.

1km to go and we decided to launch our sprinters, Thomas and Henderson look in good position but will they be able to overtake two riders in the front? Good new for Sky is that Igor Abakoumov is nowhere to be seen.

Arguably the best victory of the season so far, Greg Henderson wins the stage, Flecha comes 2nd, and Thomas comes 3rd, Jeremy Hunt also takes 5th after valiant effort, they all try to imitate Flecha ‘arrow’, and they almost succeed synchronising it. Great day for us couldn’t have been better. Sky Team will celebrate today long into the night.
