Great finish.
My thoughts:
1) Crash was not Cav's fault. He got pushed out to the left around the corner by another rider coming through, but on a right turn it is the responsibility of the rider on the left to account for it and move over for him as he did for the guy coming on his (Cav) inside.
2) Farrar got really unlucky, he didn't crash, but the Ag2r rider's bike got caught in his and he dragged it.
3) Good sprint by Pettachi, not very encouraging finish by Hushovd.
It was entirely Cavendish's fault. There is no one on his right when he goes into the corner and he misses the line completely. He just continues on in a straight line and drags the other riders with him. |

I don't care whose fault it was, but it was a cracking sprint from Petacchi. |

First time I saw it I thought it was 2 Cervélo riders but versus (Sherwin, not exactly reliable, seems to believe it is Cav). The shoulder barge push also looks Cavendishesc (new word)? I'll wait to condemn the barge around the corner until they say who it was.
Maybe i was horribly distracted, but i was under the impression that Jeremy Hunt was responsible for dragging Cav out in front of Freire. I may have to watch that again...

From looking at: https://video.eurosport.fr/cyclisme/to...ideo.shtml (Thanks to BouBBox)
At the turn, Im fairly sure its Cavendish and a Lampre rider who clash. There does seem to be a rider coming up on the inside of Cavendish, so Cavendish probably looked to give a bit more room, came into contact with the Lampre rider and lost control.
Edit: Although actually - Cavendish remains pretty much on the same line until veering over out of control. The Lampre rider if anything, was trying to move in on Cavendish.

Imo, i don't think that would have hindered him and make him move away. Another sprinter might have, but i don't think Cav would move away for anyone. Anyways, first he just touched shoulders, but then he goes at it with his full weight and then takes his corner to get away, but he had bad luck that Freire hit his wheel. I do think that was Cav's fault.

Focusing solely on the Lampre rider and Cavendish.
To me, it looks like they were both aiming for Renshaw's wheel. Cavendish taking an 'arc' path through the corner that will move him out wide, the Lampre rider less so - making a collision of some sort inevitable.
The crash may not have been inevitable, but a sprinter's instinct if someone moves into you is to give a nudge back - it was after all the Lampre rider who was trying to take Cavendish's place - but that coinciding with the tight turn, led to a loss of control.
From what I can see, Freire and Hunt were innocent bystanders.

Also, the jersey Merckx was presented with today was seriously cool and a nice idea. Congrats ASO for that.
Anyone got a picture of it?

After watching the replay of the first crash a few times:
Sh** happens. Someone is to blame, but it's one of those honest mistakes.
On to tomorrow's stage. Anything could happen. Nice stage. Wish it was today

Aha, I see how Hunt got involved now. He did take Cavendish down, but you cant really say it was his fault, after Cavendish and the Lampre rider came in front of him. That was just bad luck.

An interesting aside:
Evans once again finished without teammates. On a flat stage
I wonder if they've found their way out of Holland yet.

If it was just bad luck, then Cavendish seems to have had a cursed season. |

Bad luck for Hunt, yes. Cavendish, well his season proper started today, so its best to reserve judgement on it's nature for a few weeks at least.
Ironically though, Hunt may have helped out Hushovd greatly Green jersey wise. I doubt Cavendish would have won the sprint after that turn, but had he kept up right, he could have gathered a few green jersey points.
