@Pellizotti2: Thanks a lot, it's great to get this kinf of feedback from one of the best story writers there is!
@ others: Thanks a lot, I'd expected some wins with Schleck, but these by Bos, De Gendt and Ligthart are unexpected, especially on extreme. Possibly I'm becoming a better PCM-player
Stage 15 is the first of 3 stages in a row with a mountain top finish. After some earlier climbs, the riders have to face the Monte Cimone, a 9 kilometre long climb at an average gradient of 12%. This climb for sure comes close to the difficulty level of the Zoncolan and Angliru!
171km to go
So, a mountain stage with many KOTM-points to be collected, means Francis De Greef in the attack. He attacks out of the peloton a few kilometres before the summit of the first climb of the day, the Passo della Collina (14.0km at 5.9%). Of course, he collects the maximum amount of points. Michael Rasmussen and Kanstantin Siutsou follow at a minute, the peloton at almost two.
116km to go De Greef continues on his own, what is not a nice perspective with 160km to go. So when Santo Anza (Vacansoleil) attacks in the descend and is closing the gap, he decides to wait for the Italian and the two continue their break together.
As Anza isn't interested in KOTM-points, it's easy for De Greef to collect the full 5 points in the 2nd climb, the Bocca dei Ravari. The peloton follwows at 5'06.
77km to go
A group of 4 riders attack out of the peloton and start to close the gap pretty quickly. Within a distance of 40 kilometres, Laurens ten Dam (Rabobank), Francesco Masciarelli (Astana), Morris Possoni (Sky) and Sylvester Szmyd (Liquigas) bridge the 5 minutes and the 2 leaders have become 6.
54km to go
Szmyd and Ten Dam are by far the best climbers in this group. Anza is the first one to get dropped, and De Greef has to let them go 2 kilometres before the summit of the Passo di Croce Arcana (15km at 7.6%). In these 2 kilometres, he looses a minute to Szmyd, who's the first at the summit. Th epeloton is 5'49 behind.
29km to go
Szmyd and Ten Dam are also the first ones at the Abetone (11.9km at 6.2%). Behind them, José Rujano and Domenico Pozzovivo attack out of the peloton and get followed by Rein Taaramäe and Ivan Basso. But when passing the summit, they get caught again by the peloton, that is 6'17 behind the leading duo.
9km to go
Euskaltel and Monster Energy are doing the pace in the long descend towards the foot of today's last climb. When the ascend starts, with 9km to go, they are 4'45 behind Szmyd and Ten Dam.
6km to go
The Polish leader from the Liquigas team easily drops Ten Dam, and continues his mission to bring the relegated Liquigas team a stage win in this Giro. With 6km to go, he has an advantage of 3'24 to the first chasing group.
The 5 best climbers in this Giro ride away from the first peloton: Andy Schleck, José Rujano, Michele Scarponi, Vincenzo Nibali and Igor Antón. This means that GC's number 4 (Simon Spilak) and 6 (Joaquím Rodríguez) are missing.
3km to go
After an attemp by José Rujano, Igor Antón attacks with 3km to go at a point where the gradient is 15%. Schleck counters, but it cost him a lot of energy. The others can't follow the attack, but are closing in when the pace made by Antón drops. Szmyd still leads by 2'08, it's getting close for him!
1km to go
Antón increases the pace again and Schleck is struggling to follow the unleashed Basque. Entering the last kilometre, the stage win becomes a possibility, as they can see Szmyd '46 in front of them. Scarponi and Rujano follow '17 behind the 2 best riders in this Giro.
Finish
Sylvester Szmyd manages to stay out of reach and takes his first win of the season, and brings his team important points to get promotion at the end of the season. He barely stays out of reach of Antón, who finishes at 8 seconds. Andy Schleck has to let his Spanish rival go in the last kilometres, and takes the 3rd place at '21. Scarponi and Rujano follow at '37, Nibali at 1'09, Pozzovivo and Spilak at 1'54 and Joaquím Rodríguez and Damiano Cunego at 2'04.
25 riders finish outside the time limit and have to leave the Giro. Among them many sprinters: Dehaes, Guardini, Nizzolo, McEwen and Napolitano.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
This stage was way tougher tha everybody expected.... Antón has gained 17 seconds in the first of 3 mountain stages. But the final climbs of the next 2 stages are less steep than today´s Monte Cimone, so it should suit Schleck better.
Afte a well deserved day of rest for all the riders, the horror of 5 stages in the Alps, including 3 mountain top finishes, starts with stage 16 between Torino and the summit of the Colle del Nivolet. After a pretty flat run-up, including 2 minor climbs, the riders have to climb the Colle del Nivolet. It's not the gradient, but the length that is the difficulty. 33 kilometres and 500 metres at an average gradient of 5.6% (steepest parts up to 12%) will bring the riders to an altitude of 2615 metres.
123km to go
After the previous stage to the Monte Cimone, Francis De Greef wanted to take it easy for a few days. But he felt that good after the rest day, that he shows up in another BOTD. And of course, he wins the sprint for the first KOTM-pointsm at the summit of the Colle del Lys. He's joined by 10 riders: Vladimir Karpets (Katusha), Oscar Sevilla (Movistar), Andrea Noé (Farnese Vini), Danielle Pietropolli (Omega Pharma), Oscar Pujol (Lotto), Leonardoe Duque (Sony Ericsson), Massimo Codol (Acqua & Sapone), Tejay van Garderen (Colnago), Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil), Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) and the young Dutch climbing talent Tom-Jelte Slagter (Rabobank). At this point, the peloton is 6'33 behind.
91km to go
The 12 leaders extend their lead in the long descend, so they have a 8'01 lead at the summit of the Colle Forcola, the 2nd climb of the day. Again, De Greef takes the most points, but he has to fight for it with Andrea Noé.
33km to go
The teams of Euskaltel (GC's number 2 Antón) and Radio Shack - Nissan (GC's number 3 Nibali) make the pace in the peloton, we can take it easy again. At the foot of the ascend of the Colle del Nivolet, the peloton rides 3'06 behind the 12 leaders.
24km to go
When the road is arising with only 3-4%, Igor Antón attacks. All his opponents must be thinking "what a lunatic, to attack this early, withthis low gradient..." and don't react. Radio Shack, with Janez Brajkovic in the lead, continues in a high pace, and is getting back Antón metre by metre. The 12 leaders are still 3'06 in front of the peloton.
18km to go
After a few kilometres, Antón sees that his early solo-attack is a dumb adventure, and lets himself fall back in the peloton. The waiting starts for the next one to attack. Domenico Pozzovivo is the next one to try it. At this point (18km to go), De Greef, Pujol and Karpets have dropped the others and are in the lead. Duque and Slagter follow at '56, Pozzovivo at 1'23 and the peloton at 1'37.
12km to go Francis De Greef shows that he's the best climber in the leading group and that the rest day was enough to recover and drops the other 2. Karpets and Pujol follow at '17, and the peloton at '56. Pozzovivo has been caught again.
7km to go
The steeper parts of the Colle del Nivolet has started, and only De Greef is '44 in front of the peloton. The monstruous length of the climb is causing it's victims. U25-leader Rein Taaramäe and GC's number 7 Joaquím Rodríguez get dropped.
1600m to go De Greef is doing a fantastic job, but get's caught with only 1600 metres to go. Andy Schleck, who has done nothing more than stay in the wheel of Antón the last 15 kilometres, believes this is the moment to attack, as he knows that beating Antón in an uphill sprint will be tough.
700m to go
The attack succeeds partly. Scarponi and Rujano get dropped, but Antón can keep his wheel and it will be a sprint for the win. Will it be Antóns 4th, or Schlecks 2nd?
Finish
It turns out in Andy Schlecks 2nd stage win this Giro. And more important, he takes another 10 seconds at Antón! Scarponi finishes in 3rd (+ '23), Rujano 4th (+ '32) and Nibali 5th ('52). Our poor hero De Greef finishes in the 9th place at 1'35.
And again, some riders have to leave the Giro because of finishing outside the time limit. 13 this time, including Mark Renshaw, Daniel Oss and Kurt Asle Arvesen.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
And that's number 6.... Amazing. Again, De Greef did a fantastic job. But it was pretty remarkably to see, that none of the favourites could create a rea gap, except Andy in the last part. Tomorrow another tough day, with the mtf at the Cervinia.
The last of 3 stages with a mountain top finish in a row. The route between Cuorgne and the summit of the Cervinia is pretty short, only 150 kilometres, but it contains 4 climbs and the finish after a long ascend of the Cervinia. Not the most difficult climb, but still hard because of the length of 26km.
62km to go
A breakaway with 6 riders in it, takes a lot of minutes. Andrea Noé (Farnese), Tom-Jelte Slagter (Rabobank), Leonardo Duque (Sony Ericsson), Óscar Pujol (Lotto), Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil) and Roberto Chiarini (Androni) have a lead of 8'02 at the first climb of the day, the Col d'Arlaz. Just as at th efirst climb, Noé takes the most points at the 2nd climb of the day, the Colle di Zuccore. The lead has increased to 14 minutes.
26km to go
The lead even increases more, and at the summit of the Col de Joux, where Noé takes the points again, the peloton follows at 17'58. In between follows a group of 4, with Tom Danielson (Garmin), Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas), Moris Possoni (Sky) and Francesco Masciarelli (Astana). At the foot of the last climb, the leading group has a lead of 11'38 to the 4 chasers and even 18'54 to the peloton!! This is what happens, when we decide not to do the chase.
22km to go
In the next 4 kilometres, the peloton takes it slowly, but cutting down the gap to 17'10. This is the sign for an attack by Michele Scarponi. Joaquím Rodríguez and Igor Antón react immediately, while Lampre and Radio Shack do the pace in the first peloton.
10km to go
It's the same story as yesterday: Radio Shack does the pace and the attackers get caught. Up front, Pujol and Noé have droppes the others and have a small gap of '3 to Slagter, Duque and Carrara. The peloton follows at 12'09.
5km to go
Under the bow of the last 5 kilometres, Noé has a meeting with the man with the hammer. He has to let Pujol go, and even gets passed by Duque and Slagter. The peloton is 9'13 behind, and no one attacks. We really don't mind.
Finish
Lotto - Belisol's Óscar Pujol extends his lead in the last 5 kilometres and is riding towards the biggest win of his career. He finishes 2'08 in front of Duque and 2'34 in front of Slagter. Noé looses 3'30 in the last 5 kilometres.
7th place
The big five sprint together for the 7th place and it's Andy Schleck who wins it, beating Nibali.
Ligthart
The Giro ends here for a totally exhausted Pim Ligthart, who finishes outside the time limit, together with Denis Galimzyanov and Alfredo Balloni. But Ligthart can look back at a great Giro, with one stage win!

Today's winner
Word from the DS
One stage finished without time loss, that's th emost important thing. We feel sorry for Pim Ligthart that he has to leave this Giro, but he surely did better than expected with his stage win in stage 14 in Pistoia. He has deserved a short vacation near the beach!
Andy is looking good for the win now. If Anton beats him in any stages it's generally for only a few seconds.
Shame to see Ligthart have to go home, looking forward to seeing him succeeding in other races. A great Giro for him!
