@ sutty68: I said fantastic, you brilliant, too be honest: both
@ alexanderlens: a gap of a minute to Antón, this means I can follow him, not the need to attack. Maybe that works better than attacking like at the MOnte Piselli.
@ baia: yeah, the team performance is great. De Maar is protecting Andy almost the entire stage and De Greef, De Gendt and Kelderman are great in the mountains (mo stats of 77-76-78).
@fcancellara: It took me more than 10 attempts to figure out what wuld be the right one, and then still you are depending on different factors. This time it worked great, but at the 2nd split time, a lot of the riders had only very little energy left (only Schleck and De Gendt were pretty good).
@ FreitasPCM: Thank you, I was extremely happy when I saw the finish time, I thought I had dropped a few places between the 2nd split time and the finish line.
Later today, next stage (to Montelupone in the Marche). First a bike ride for myself today and maybe to the movies tonight with my wife.

In stage 11, after the start in Pescara, the peloton leaves the Adriatic coast behind for a bit, and enters the region of the Marche. After 205 very hilly kilometres, the riders will finish in Montelupone, on top of the hill famous from the Tirreno - Adriatico.
98km to go
13 riders feel the need to go on an adventure today, and wanna torture themselves at the many steep climbs in the Marche. Most known names are: Paul Martens (Rabobank), Daniel Oss (Liquigas), Alan Davis (Qantas), Leonardo Moser (Androni), Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Danilo Napolitano (Acqua et Sapone) and Tyler Farrar (Omega Pharma). At the summit of the second categorized climb of the day, the Montalto delle Marche, they have gap of 8'23 to the peloton.
64km to go
In the next 34 kilometres, the peloton, with Katusha doing the pace, decreases the gap to the leading group with about 3 minutes. The BOTD has survived the ascend of the Montegiorgio and is heading to Montelupone.
14km to go
The final climb of the Montelupone has to be climb twice. The leading group still has a gap of 2'01 to the peloton at the summit of the climb and starts the final local lap of 14 kilometres. Damiano Cunego attacks out of the peloton at this moment. Andy Schleck is very attentful, and is within the first 15 places of the peloton all the time. In contrary to his rival Igor Antón, who is to be found around place 30-40 all the time. Is he having a bad day, or??
5km to go
One rider has attacked ou ot the leading group: Androni's Leonardo Moser is looking for the 2nd stage win this Giro for his team, and has a gap of '16 to the chasing group and 1'30 to the peloton.
1600m to go
Quiz: what brings the combination of a steep climb, with very narrow roads and exhausted riders from the BOTD that get passed by the peloton??
Yes, blocked riders /
So, when Moser is ascending the steep final climb, and has a gap of 16 second to the peloton, the riders in that peloton are having many difficulties in passing these former breakaways. Andy Schleck is still within the first 6-8 riders of that peloton, led by Thomas De Gendt, but is about to get blocked by his team mate Romain Zingle and former breakaway Marco Marcato.
1200m to go
After 400 more metres of steep climbing, Schleck is still being blocked by Marcato (pink arrow). Up front, Thomas De Gendt has taken the lead, followed by Tadej Valjavec (Astana), Leonardo Moser, Francis De Greef, Daniel Oss and Janez Brajkovic. Damiano Cunego is gaining a lot off places on the (for him) left side of the road. And Antón? Nowhere to be seen within the first 25 riders!
500m to go
The steep part is done, the last 500 metres are only about 3-4% upwards, and De Gendt has a great shot at the win. But Il Piccolo Principe is coming fast from behind and has already passed Valjavec. And Schleck? He finally has passed Marcato and is flying towards the finish, passing rider by rider (and just outside this screenshot).
Finish Thomas De Gendt has got some energy left in his legs, and also thanks to the narrow corners in the last part of the race, holds of Cunego to take the stage win! Besides winning the Begian ITT-title, it's his first win for our team and a deserved one. Cunego finishes 2nd in the same time, Valjavec 3rd at '19.
Schleck Andy Schleck finishes just in front of his team mates De Maar & De Greef in 4th place at '33.
Antón
At '43 follows a group with Brajkovic and Joaquím Rodríguez. Then the waiting starts for Igor Antón. He finishes in 14th at 1'08, together with all the other GC-contenders. This means, another '35 lost to Schleck!

Today's winner
Word from the DS
What a strange final of this stage.... All the riders in the peloton got blocked (except De Gendt and Valjavec) and I began to eat the steering wheel of my car, but in the end, we are the winners of today. Great win for De Gendt, he really deserves this after being close to it many times since he joined the time. And then Schleck even gained'35 to Antón, unbelievable....
In stage 12, we enter the region of Umbria and face a mountain stage with 4 tough climbs in the uplands. The last summit, of the Monte Pennino, is located 17 kilometres before the finish and a difficult descend remains.
68km to go
It's no surprise to see the leader in the KOTM-ranking Francis De Greef in today's attack. He already collected the most points given at the summit of the first climb of the day, the Monte San Vicino (8.0km at 8.8%), and now he also does it at the summit of the 2nd categorized climb of the day, the Monte Vermenone (8.5km at 9.3%). Together with Sony Ericsson's Thomas Rohregger, he has a gap of 2'14 to the peloton.
55km to go
The peloton has started the 3rd slimb of the day, the Montelago. With 7.4km at 6.2% it's the easiest of the 4 today. Stefano Garzelli (Acqua et Sapone) and Sylvester Szmyd (Liquigas) decide to try to bridge the gap of 2'36 tot the 2 leaders and attack out of the peloton.
49km to go De Greef crosses the summit of the Montelago as the first rider, and has collected 25 KOTM-points so far today. Garzelli, who rides a very disappointing Giro so far, and Szmyd follow at 1'37 and the peloton (46 riders with all the favourites in it) at 3'17.
23km to go
In the flat part towards the foor of the last climb of the day, Garzelli and Szmyd close the gap to the 2 leaders, and the 4 riders start the last climb of the day, the Monte Pennino. Because if the high pace in the peloton made by Euskaltel and mainly Radio Shack, the 4 get caught with 23km to go.
20km to go
About 3 kilometres before the summit of the Monte Pennino (9.0km at 7.2%, to an altitude of 1501m), Michele Scarponi is the first one to attack. Scarponi gets followed by Igor Antón (of course) and José Rujano. And Schleck? He doesn't follow, but continues in a high pace.
17km to go
Being the best climber in this Giro, Antón drops Scarponi and is the first rider at the summit. 21 seconds behind follows a group of 4, with Scarponi (GC5), Rujano (7), Vincenzo Nibali(3) and the surprisingly strong Simon Spilak (4). GC-leader Andy Schleck follows at '40.
11km to go
We don't know if Antón is a bad downhiller, or Schleck has turned into a good one, but after 5 kilometres of narrow and cornery descending roads, the first 6 riders have become one group, with Domenico Pozzovivo closely behind.
1200m to go
The pace immediately drops and another group of 7 joins the first group. Schleck decides to take the wheel of Nibali to start his sprint. But on his left, Antón starts to sprint.
Finish Schleck gets surprised by this move and is without a chance for the stage win. Igor Antón takes his third stage win of the Giro, in front of Michele Scarponi and Andy Schleck. 10 riders have to leave the Giro, because they finished outside the time limit, no big names among them.

Word from the DS
Another stage done, one closer to the goal. We're happy with 2 relatively flat stages now, so we can rest a bit, before we enter the Alps with some monstruous stages.
Stage 13 is the first of 2 relatively flat ones and brings the riders to the region Emilia Romagna. The first half is hilly, with climbs to Urbino and San Marino, and the second part is completely flat. So we expect (and hope) for a mass sprint, to let the sprinter teams do the work.
94km to go
The story of today: 14 riders go on an adventure, get a maximum gap of 8 minutes, but get caught in the final 10 kilometres. Some of the names: Mirco Lorenzetto & Francesco Ginanni (Androni), Murilo Fischer 9Garmin), Luca Paolini (Katusha), Jos van Emden (Rabobank) and again Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil).
2km to go
The riders from Sony Ericsson have taken the lead of the peloton, to bring their leader Edvald Boasson Hagen the win. Our sprinters (Bos & Ligthart) are too tired to take part in the sprint.
700m to go
EBH is in the lead with only 700metres to go. Tyler Farrar and Matthew Goss are on his tail, but the gap must be big enough.
Finish
Goss van overtake Farrar, but Edvald Boasson Hagen can't be overtaken. It's the first season win for the Norwegian super talent. Surprisingly, the GC-contenders finish in the Top 10, beating many sprinters: Cunego 5th, Spilak 6th, Antón 7th and Schleck 9th. Strange....

Word from the DS
Sometimes, you have nothing important to tell. Off to Tuscany!
Stage 14 from Forli to Pistoia, into the beautiful region of Tuscany. The stage is 180 kilometres long, and has three categorized climbs in th emiddle of it. The last 30 kilometres are flat, but with the tough mountain stages coming up, a breakaway will have a chance here.
129km to go
A group of 6 riders find each other and form today's BOTD. In it are: Federico Canuti (Colnago), Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Ruggero Marzoli (Aqua et Sapone), André Steensen (Saxo Bank), Jussi Veikkanen (Lotto) and Pim Ligthart. At the summit of the 1st climb of the day, the Passo del Muraglione (alt. 981m), they have a lead of 4'40.
63km to go
The 6 leaders cooperate very well, and they extend their lead over the next two climbs, the Vetta le Croci and the Pratolino. At the last summit, 63km before the finish, they lead the peloton with 5'21.
18km to go
The cooperation in the peloton to hunt down the leading group is pretty bad organised. Because of it, the 6 leaders can keep a safe lead of 2'36 at the 2nd Intergiro, only 18 kilometres from the finish. The 6 leaders will battle for the win!
5km to go
On paper, Pim Ligthart is the best sprinter in the leading group. He has wisely chosen the wheel of the second-best sprinter, Marco Marcato, who already won a stage this Giro. 5km before the finish, they still lead with 1'44.
600m to go
The sprint for the win has started and it looks like Ligthart has made the richt decision. Marcato leads with 600 metres to go, when he starts his jump.
Finish Ligthart comes side by side with Marcato, overtakes him and takes the win with half a bike length difference! Last year, he won a few smaller stages and races (in Ster ZLM Tour, Tour de Wallonie and Rund um Köln), but this is by far his biggest win so far!
The peloton, with Farrar and Goss in the lead, finishes 1'06 behind Ligthart. All riders of the top 20 are in this first peloton.

Word from the DS
5 stage wins in 14 stages..... Unbelievable. We knew that Ligthart was the man to watch when it was certain that the BOTD would stay in front. But he had to do it against a rider as Marcato, who was way more experienced! Great job by him.
But now we'll focus on the mountains, with 3 stages with a mountain top finish coming up....
