Much to the delight of the Duvel Beer people, we sent a squad to the Ronde van Belge. Although I would be at the Giro I would be following with a keen eye.

STAGE 1: Buggenhout 6 KM

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/1_zps9bb3a73f.jpg

Us out on course.

Kwiatkowski rode a strong prologue to beat the stage favourites, Durbridge and Salomein, to the minor positions on the podium and take a nice win.

STAGE 2: Lochristi - Knokke Heist 160 KM's

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/2_zpsce65756e.jpg

In the end ... it is a straightforward sprint win for Guardini.

Al Zaid made the break today and it looked like it would go all the way to the finish. Al Zaid was left on the front with a few kilometres to go, he and no one else wanted to set the pace so the peloton came back at a fast speed which resulted in an easy win for the stage favourite.

Only 53 riders avoided the big crash late on, Boonen was one who avoided it along with Qatari champ Al Muwalid.

STAGE 3: Knokke Heist - Ieper 188 KM's

A stage with laps around a nasty cobbled hill.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/3_zpscfdab2c9.jpg

'Wild Warlock' Baeyens crashes!

The fight to get into the break of the day was intense early on. We tried to get the Qatari champ in there, but we couldn't manage it. No need to worry though as we managed to get Tom Boonen into the break. He was the only man to avoid the crash yesterday and as a result was best placed in GC by over 1'00 of those in the break.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/4_zpsc83f6111.jpg

Boonen puts in an attack as the late attackers almost catch up to the original break.

With 30 KM to go a group containing Polazzi and Lopes, after some aggressive attacking, ride across to the Boonen break as we ride the final time up the cobbled hill. Polazzi, in sprinting for the bonus seconds, distances everyone and continues on.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/5_zps6507aee0.jpg

A big crash at the head of the tiring peloton with 20 KM to go means the breaks ahead will contest the victory and, likely, the GC.

Polazzi is 1'01 ahead of Boonen at this time in the GC. Polazzi has a gap of 1'05 on the road with 10 KM to go, but if this gap reduces Boonen has a shot at the GC lead. To our relief the riders work well together as they think they can catch Polazzi for the stage win.

Polazzi gets a strong stage win, but what about the time gaps? Has Boonen taken the GC lead?

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/6_zps00403b66.jpg

Boonen has the GC lead!

Yes, he still has it! Thanks to the break speeding up Polazzi only ended up winning by '36, combined with the '20 bonus seconds means Boonen leads by '5. He still has it! It is a cliché, but you couldn't have wrote that!

Duvel Beer were ecstatic with this result, if the 20 messages I received are anything to go by. They even offered me a visit to one of their factories for a 'rare and rewarding tour', how could I refuse!

Some great days for the team. Tom Boonen finds his former self in Belgium and Vandyck wins second Giro stage. Shock

You'd think they finally accept you as their team manager for good, after all you are the one who brings in the results. Wink

STAGE 19: Treviso - Alpe di Pampeago 196 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Preidler(B&O) *Jeannesson(FDJ)

The penultimate mountain stage and what a brute. We go up the Passo Pampeago twice (10 KM @ 9.95). The Giro can be won or lost today.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/1_zps5ff0843e.jpg

Vuelta winner Garabay is dropped before the final climb.

It is a super hard stage and the racing is super hard. Only a dozen or so of the big favourites are not empty before the final gruelling climb.

Battaglin (3rd) would suffer today and, after a great Giro, tumble out of the top 10.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/2_zps11bbc496.jpg

Long leads the gruppeto.

It is a really hard stage for the team today. Only Kishi manages to finish under 1'00'00 from the stage winner on the day. However, only Bole from our team was timed out on the stage.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/3_zps0381e80e.jpg

Barton, rocking and rolling in the saddle, is the last of the break to be caught. For much of the stage he along with Kennaugh were out front as members of the quality climbing break.

Salas and pink jersey Henao are the ones doing the pace setting today. Salas is the first to attack, he quickly gets a gap of '30 but Henao rides a steady tempo ... this would be pay off as he catches the Spaniard after 1 km.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/4_zps9fc99f8d.jpg

Henao puts in a monster attack.

With around 3 KM to go Henao attacks. Salas tries to go with him, but can't follow that pace for even 1 meter. The Spaniard looks around, but he won't get any help there. Henao continues one as the Spaniard suffers.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/5_zpsb5d8331a.jpg

Henao on course for a 4th Giro win!

With Salas cracking towards the finish and Henao being super strong there was only one winner today. Henao, the best Giro rider this century hands down, puts big time into Salas today and is now the overwhelming favourite for the GC win.

After the great recent success of Belgian riders Boonen and Vandyck for the team. The guys at Duvel Beer have offered me a tour of their renown factory in Breendonk, Belgium. They said I could bring one other person along for the tour. I was going to bring my partner, Jun Lee, but see isn't a fan of beer! Abdulatif Al Zaid is, however, so he will be joining me. What have I got myself into!

@ Shonak: Sadly, that decision is final. Wink

@ sutty: Great to see him still putting in results like that. Smile

Nothing to do on such stage at the end of a GT Wink

I would love to come visit the beer factory as well.
Those are strange guy though: firing you then invite you for a Tour Rolling Eyes

STAGE 4: Bertem - Eupen 202 KM's

A hilly stage. We have Boonen in the race lead but with poor form it is unlikely the lead can be held.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/1_zpsefec105f.jpg

We hit the first serious hills of the stage with 95 KM to go. Boonen immediately begins to lose the customary yellow jersey position at the head of the race. It is not long before he is dropped completely....

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/2_zps992ec033.jpg

We did do our darndest to ensure Boonen had every chance of regaining the lead, but it was never going to happen. He was dropped with 75 KM to go for good. It was great to see De Ridder wait up for Boonen time after time nevertheless, a true domestique. A true teammate.

Seeldraeyers takes another YouTube win showing he is a top puncheur in such a field of riders. Polazzi wasn't too far behind and moves into the race lead.

STAGE 5: Oreye - Putte 169 KM's

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/4_zpscf20dd2d.jpg

Three wins for YouTube!

YouTube showed their impressive weight in this continental race with Guardini winning the last stage in style and thus winning the points jersey. Blythe had a great lead in the final but Guardini is really on another level to everyone here.

We came into this race with an 8 man squad out of shape, having led the race with talisman Boonen is a huge result.

@ duxili - People have strange, diverse and complex relationships in 2021! Wink

@ sutty68 - Lets hope Kritskiy can survive the Stelvio for a shot at a TT win. Smile

STAGE 20: Caldes - Passo del Stelvio 216 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Salas(HLE) **Barton(BGZ) *Henao(YTE)

The penultimate stage ends on the fabled climb.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/1_zps86902b0c.jpg

Teklehaimanot, Martin, Kennaugh, Marais and Patin were five quality climbers which made the break today. But with Youtube able to put Sicard and Gesink on the front they stood little chance. The break only had 2'40 as the Stelvio was reached.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/2_zps02175f7e.jpg

Henao goes for a long one!

With the break caught the pink jersey attacked with 11 KM to go. What an attack it was, only Kelderman could hang on and that was only for a few meters before the Colombian went off into the distance.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/3_zps8ad910cf.jpg

Suffering!

It was a another day of hurt for the guys. However, Kritskiy would comfortably make the time limit ahead of the TT.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/4_zps88463b20.jpg

Henao wins the stage. He will win the Giro!

Henao takes to the Giro like a duck to water, he wins on the Stelvio with a legendary climbing display. One wonders, if competing against the likes of Merckx and Coppi, that he may still win no matter than competition.

Salas, is once again, the best of the rest. He will put time into Henao on the final stage TT, but never 5'01.

STAGE 21: Milano - Milano 31 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Kritskiy(QOS) **King(UHC) *Salas(HLE)

We start the final stage with only 4 riders in the decimated Giro field of 111 riders. With a flat TT to finish us I said ... 'Take the win Kritskiy'!

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/5_zps5e79a05c.jpg

Al Yazeedi and Vandyck

We are thrilled with both of these riders for making it too the finish in Milan. Al Yazeedi completed his first GT as does Vandyck, who has a stage win to boot!

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/6_zps6f3426da.jpg

Stage Favourites!

The organisers hardly could not have wished for the two stage favourites to start at the places when they did, King was 69th in GC and Kritskiy was 68th in GC!

We had the slight advantage of starting later.

At the first checkpoint:
King = 16'02 - Kritskiy = 15'41

However! King puts time into Kritskiy at the second checkpoint:
King = 28'43 - Kritskiy = 28'35

Could Kritskiy resist?

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/7_zpsebc1a1f0.jpg

Kritskiy wins that battle!

Kritskiy finishes at 43'27 which is '38 faster than King, who pushed us so close in the prologue.

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/8_zps9b06034d.jpg

But the race is not over!

Saarinen and Kelderman beat the time of King and Salas .... is ahead of Kritskiy at the second checkpoint by '3!

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/9_zpsa80957cb.jpg

Kritskiy's 20th win as a Qatar Optics rider!

Kritskiy would ride the last third of the race faster than Salas to win by '12 on the day. Few have worn a WTT jersey in a more domineering fashion.

What a Giro for us! Three stage wins, couldn't have asked for more! I suspect those guys at Duvel Beer are regretting giving me the boot!

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/10_zpsf316253c.jpg

Henao wins his fourth Giro!

He wins again with an empathic margin, I predicted it and he delivered! He is now one win off the all time record. He also takes home the KOM jersey whilst second place Salas has to be content with the points jersey. De Vos rises to the podium after two bad days for Bilbao.

Quick Updates:

As we head into June and we have a few days without a race, it is a good time to look at the rankings.

WT rankings:

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/2_zps9be64394.jpg

We are 10th but we just lie 112 points ahead of the danger zone. Some unexpected performances will have to come in if the team is to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

Continental Team:

i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab115/riderrunrider/3_zpsbe79a937.jpg

Under the guise of my soon to be replacement, Sven Nys, the continental team saunter on. There aren't any big results in the races they take part in, but there is no doubt that the riders continue to improve both physically and mentally. Akake is really one to watch for the mountains.

....

Having returned from the Giro I hastily returned home to Antwerp where I spent some relaxing days with Jun Lee and young Jelly-Sun (who is now 2.7 years old!). Afterwards, along with Abdulatif Al Zaid, we drove down to Breendonk to see the factory of Duvel Beer for our promised tour. Bizarre that I would accept this invitation as I would be unceremoniously dismissed at the end of the season, but I harbour no grudges. Also Abdualtif really wanted to go ..... really!

Part 1: The All Inclusive Tour

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/Duvel_Brewery_Moortgat.jpg

'Welcome! Welcome! Hello Mr Aurel and Mr Al Zaid! We are honoured to be giving you an all inclusive tour of the Duvel Beer facility today. I am sure you will be enlightened by what you see today and you deserve it after all you have done. I am Eugene Donk and I suppose I will be your tour guide today. Please call me Eugene.'

'Pleased to meet you Eugene.' I said. It was nice of them to greet us as soon as we left the car.

' Yeah, Yeah, Yeah'. Said Abdulatif, standing in the Belgian rain, shivering by the looks of it. ' Can we go inside Mr Donk? I am freezing my camel butt out here!' Abdulatif did never adjust to the Belgian weather.

' Right. This way.' Said our portly Belgian host and we stepped into the Belgian factory and the tour begun.

'It all started in 1871 when Moorgat brewery........'

In a world of ever increasing chrome and mass technology used on a worldwide scale, it was great to see this brewery had kept to its routes and individuality. We spent a good five minutes walking passed barrels, tanks, distilling rooms and the like whilst Eugene Donk rambled on not once, to my knowledge, pausing for a breath.

Having descended a flight of stairs we were now underground where, according to Eugene, ' Our special brews ferment in ideal conditions'.

We were continuing along when Abdulatif stopped me and indicated for me to keep quite. He took out a crowbar from goodness knows where and started to pry at old looking rickety door. Before I could protest against his actions the door was open and he ushered me to follow him. In the distance I could Eugene still giving us his tour, clearly not noticing he was by himself now.

'Follow me effendi' said Abdulatif. I followed him, perhaps carelessly, wondering where this adventure would take us. Once passing the wooden door we walked along an old oak beamed passage with little light to see where we were heading.

'Abdulatif I can't see where the hell I a........'. I fell. I must have dropped a good 8 eight. Fortunately Abdulatif broke my fall!

I was about to give Abdulatif a piece of my mind when, after dusting himself off, he lit a torch and revealed we were in some ancient underground tunnel system. With tunnels going in every direction. I was gob smacked as these tunnels looked centuries old and looked untouched for just as long.

' Believe me. I know what I am doing Effendi' Abdualtif said. At a fast walk he headed off down a tunnel and, realising shouting was pointless, I followed.

Great read! Abdualtif sure is a little troublemaker. Wink

Oh, and: Too bad about Belgium Tour, but Kritskiy: Wohoo! Banana Banana Three stage wins at Giro d'Italia: Qatar Optics definitely delivered. Shame that Duvel probably still doesn't care. Frown

Part 2: The Dream

www.blogcdn.com/www.gadling.com/media/2007/07/undergroudn-odessa-1-(custom).jpg

So here I was with Abdulatif leading me to goodness knows where in some long forgotten catacombs under a small Belgian town. I would have phoned Jun Lee, to tell her goodbye, if there was any signal. But, of couse, there wasn't.

We had been fast walking, in silence, through the tunnels for a good 5 minutes. Abdulatif was never in doubt about where to go, as if he had been here before.

'What is this Abdulatif?' I said whilst pulling at his shoulder forcing him to stop.

He exhaled a deep breath and then began. ' Fred, it is like this. You remember Mr Tang?'

' Vividly. How could I forget?' I responded. How could I indeed? When our plane crashed in China, almost one year ago, Mr Tang was there. He was a strange old gentleman, very strange. I let go of Abdulatif and we continued on walking.

Abdulatif continued. ' Well a few months after China I started having these strange dreams with Mr Tang .... guiding me. Listen effendi, you may say I am crazy, but in these dreams, which I have had hundreds of times, I have walked these very tunnels so often the path has been carved into my mind. When I saw that old wooden door I knew those dreams were not just dreams they were visions, visions into the future.'

After a few seconds, having digested this unbelievable story, I asked: ' Well what is next? How does this dream end?'

As the tunnel gave way to a larger space, a room, Abdulatif said, whilst pointing to something metallic on the floor, 'We make history effendi. '
