After 2 flat stages, we enter the mountains again with the 7th stage from Padula to the summit of the Rifugio Calvanico. After 3 not that tough climbs, the riders have to climb the Rifugio Calvanico, which is 7'8km long with an average gradient of 11.5% and maximum gradients of over 16%!!
142km to go
As there are many KOTM-points to be collected, Francis De Greef is present in the BOTD, to extend his lead in the KOTM-rankings.
He's the first at the first KOTM-sprint at the summit of the Passo della Sentinella and is accompanied by Oscar Pujol (Lotto). Andrea Noé (Farnese Vini) and Dries Devenyns (Omega Pharma) follow at '42, Massimo Codol (Acqua et Sapone) at 1'16, Riccardo Chiarini (Androni) at 1'30, Kurt Asle Arvesen (Sky), André Steensen & Michael Rasmussen (Saxo Bank) at 2'25 and the peloton at 5'00.
114km to go
Noé and Devenyns have joined De Greef and Pujol in the following long descend. In the next climb, the Roccadaspide, De Greef collects the maximum points. The other 5 follow at '56 and the peloton at 5'58.
63km to go
4 leaders have become 9, when the BOTD leaves the coast and enters the midland of Campania. They don't sprint for the Intergiro and are 3'40 in front of the peloton.
37km to go
One more climb to go before the real final starts, the Varco della Colla (14km at 5.6%). De Greef sets the pace and Arvesen and Steensen have been dropped. Of course, De Greef collects the maximum points again. A group of 3, Thomas Rohregger, Bauke Mollema and Francesco Masciarelli, that has attacked out of the peloton earlier in the climb, follows at 3'47 and the peloton at 4'23.
20km to go
The leading group looses ground in the descend towards the foot of the Rifugio Calvanico. With 20km to go, the group Masciarelli-Mollema-Rohregger follows at 1'56 and the peloton at 2'20.
10km to go
The final climb has begun and Andrea Noé has created a small gap. But the peloton is getting close, within 2 minutes now. And the steepest part of the climb yet has to come, the road arises with 4-7% now.
7km to go
A few kilometres later, the road arises with 7-9%. At this point, with the peloton only '56 behind the leaders, Igor Antón and José Rujano attack out of the peloton. Andy Schleck doesn't react, as he still has his luxury domestiques De Gendt & Kelderman in front of him.
5km to go
Antón flies up the mountain (now 10-11%) and easily passes the leading group. He leads Rujano by '16 and Devenyns by '30. At '48 follows a group with Andy Schleck, Simon Spilak (Lampre) and Michele Scarponi. Where are Nibali, Rodríguez and the others?
3km to go
The gradient of the ascend has become higher, it's now 12-14%. Antón remains in th elead. Rujano follows at '17, Spilak at '37, Schleck and Scarponi at '51. Antón is the new virtual leader by now! A group with Nibali, Rodríguez, Evans, Taaramäe, Basso and Cunego follows at 2'33!
1400m to go Schleck has found a good rhythm, when the gradient has reached it's maximum of 16%. He passes Spilak and Rujano, but is still '40 behind Antón. Can he come closer or has he wasted too much energy in the last 2 kilometres?
Finish
The last one is the right answer, as his speed drops in the last kilometre. Antón gets a fantastic double, with the stage win and the maglia rosa.
Chasing group Schleck follows at '50 and manages to keep a gap to Rujano and Scarponi, who follow at 1'08. Spilak stays close at 1'24. Then come the losers of today: Nibali at 2'54, Rodríguez at 3'28, Pozzovivo, Basso and Kruijswijk at 3'47 and Cunego, Evans and Taaramäe loose almost 5 minutes today, in only 7 kilometres time. One rider has to leave the Giro because of an injury, and for the second day in a row, it's on efrom Saxo Bank, This time it's Matteo Tosatto, with a broken wrist.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
What did we do wrong today? Not much I think. De Gendt and Kelderman did great in the last climb, and after that Schleck rode with a high pace. Probably he could have taken more risk, but I think that Antón would have won anyway, he was extremely strong today. And Andy had a good day (+1), but not a super day. A gap of 23 seconds isnt much, but the most important thing is that it look like it's down to 2 riders!
We enter the second week of this Giro, with stage 8 from Nocera Inferiore to Isernia. The first 150 of the 170 kilometres are very easy, almot flat, but the last 20km features two climbs. So a chance for a breakaway or a puncheur.
84km to go
Today we see a group of 11 riders that form the BOTD: Francesco Ginanni (Androni), Mitchell Docker (Qantas), Jurgen Van de Walle (Lotto), Mauro Finetto (Liquigas), Paul Martens (Rabobank), Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Russell Downing (Sky), Tosh van der Sande (Omega Pharma), Roberto De Patre (Farnese Vini), Ruggero Marzoli (Acqua et Sapone) and Walter Proch (Colnago). They have a gap of 7'18 at the first KOTM-sprint.
16km to go
The breakaways stays together during the ascend of the Acquaviva d'Isernia. Finetto is the first at the summit and the peloton is 2'37 behind. This could be a win for the breakaway!
9km to go
In the ascend if the Valico del Macerone, the last climb of the day, Martens, Marcato and Finetto drop the others. They have a gap of over 2 minutes to the peloton.
8km to go
But back to the peloton: Andy Schleck attacks! Immediately, Igor Antón reacts, just as Damiano Cunego.
7km to go
Shortly before the summit, drama happens. Schleck settles in the wheel of Antón, when they pass some of the remainders of the breakaway (Docker, Van der Sande and Marzoli), Antón attacks and Schleck gets blocked behind them. He screams but they must be too tired to get out of the way..... Antón is gone and even creates a gap of 40 seconds to Schleck.
6km to go
Marcato and Martens have started the descend towards Isernia and have dropped Finetto. They'll fight for the win today. Antón has joined a group behind them (with Gianetti, Proch, Downing and De Patre) at '48, and Schleck follows at 1'16 (and he's pretty furious...)
4km to go
A crash in the peloton: GC's number 3 Michele Scarponi hits the tarmac in the descend and it takes some time for him to get on his bike again. Will this put a cross through his GC-ambitions?
Finish
Marco Marcato wins the sprint for the win without too much effort. Just like last year (stage 6), the rider from Vacansoleil wins a stage in the Giro. Martens ha sto settle with the 2nd place.
3rd place
Antón sprints to the 4th place behind Finetto at '35. Schleck is coming out of the last corner and finishes in 10th place, and the waiting starts for the official results and the time gaps. And to our fortune, he gets the same time as Antón. Even the peloton that finishes behind Scheck gets the same time. Only Scarponi looses time today, 3'02 to the other GC-contenders and drops from 3rd to 7th.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
Sometimes you wanna fight the jury, sometimes you love them. And today we love them. But the point is that riders who know they will be overtaken, should go to the side of the road, instead of blocking them... Anyway, we are glad that Schleck didn't loose time today and can fight for the GC-lead tomorrow at the Mont Piselli.
The 9th stage is a very tough one in the region of Abruzzo. It includes 4 climbs between Sulmona and San Giovanni /Monte Piselli, the last 2 with gravel roads and a mountain top finish. Expect another battle between the GC-favourites, can Anto'n be beaten?
172km to go
4 climbs means many KOTM-to be collected, means Francis De Greef in the attack. He's the first at the summit of the 1st (Le Svolte di Popoli) and 2nd (Passo delle Capannelle) KOTM-sprint.
133km to go
Together with 5 other riders he forms the BOTD: sprinters Tyler Farrar (Omega Pharma) & Alan Davis (Qantas), Francesco Reda (Acqua et Sapone), Emanuele Vona (Androni) and André Steensen (Saxo Bank). The 5 create a maximum lead to the peloton of 8 minutes. One rider tries to bridge the gap, Liquigas Sylvester Szmyd.
50km to go
The ascend of the penultimate climb, the Valico di Pietra Stretta, has begun and De Greef is doing the pace in the leading group. One by one, the other 5 get dropped and with 50km to go only Steensen can follow him, but is about to break as well. Szmyd is 2'56 behind and the peloton 4'43.
41km to go
After 5 kilometres on gravel roads, De Greef reaches the summit of the climb. Szmyd follows at 1'25, Steensen at 3'36 and the peloton at 4'12. Because of the rain, the descend (gravel and tarmac) have become slippery which causes many crashes, but no GC-contenders are involved.
5km to go
The last climb has begun, the Monte Piselli (14.6km at 6.5%), of which the last 2 kilometres are on gravel roads. The adventure of De Greef lasts longer than expected, but he gets caught with 5km to go.
4km to go
When you're in 2nd position in the GC, you have to attack to regain the lead. So Andy Schleck attacks with 4 kilometres to go. Igor Antón isnt surprised and he reacts immediately.
2km to go
Before the gravel roads start, the 3 best climbers in this Giro are up front: Schleck, Antón and Scarponi. 30 seconds behind is a group with Nibali, Spilak and Rujano.
1km to go
Was the attack too much and did Schleck wasted too much energy, or is Antón too strong at the moment. Just before the last kilometre begins, Antón rides away by his Luxembourg rival and leads with '8. Scarponi follows at '24.
Finish
It's the second stage win for Antón, and the second with a mountain top finish. For sure he's the strongest climber at the moment in this Giro. Schleck looses '25 today, Scarponi '46, Nibali and Spilak 1'06 and Rujano 1'21.

Word from the DS
Oh my, how are we going to crack Antón?? He's very strong at the moment. But the Giro isn't over yet. Tomorrow is the TTT, and I'm sure we will reagin time on him and Euskaltel then.

Guess who's back?
Lets see how many friens are still around...
It's Team Time Trial-time! 28.7 almost flat filometres around the city of Pescara, the biggest city in the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo-region. Our main goal is to regain time on Antón, and practised a lot (read: played a lot of TTTs in the game with different tactics), so we're very confident about it.
Saxo Bank - Sunguard has already been minimized to 6 riders, but these manage to set the best time so far: 39'47.
The first team to beat this time is the Spanish Movistar formation. They are 18 seconds faster, 39'29.
BMC Racing Team has the goal to improve their leader Michele Scarponi in the GC, after his earlier crash. Thanks to good timetrialists as Brent Bookwalter, Taylor Phinney and Marco Pinotti, they ride the 2nd time so far, '2 behind Movistar.
Rabobank Cycling Team, with decent time-trialists as Paul Martens and Jos van Emden in their ranks, start pretty slowly, but after a fast last part, they set a new best time. 4 seconds faster than Movistar, 39'15.
Together with Monster Energy - Ford, the team of Radio Shack - Nissan is the biggest favourite to win this TTT. They crush the time of Rabobank, and Andrew Talansky, Janez Brajkovic, Thiago Machado and of course GC's number 3 Vincenzo Nibali complete the route in a time of 38'42.
The Katusha Team has the goal to bring Joaquím Rodríguez closer to the podium. Thanks to Vladimir Karpets and Cadel Evans, they ride a pretty good TTT, 5th provisional time in 39'31.
GC's number 4 Simon Spilak hopes to minimize the time loss against Nibali with his Lampre team. But not having great time trialists in the team, they face a tough job. The result is pretty surprising: 39'34 and the 6th provisional time.
All the teams have started and have passed the first split time after 8 kilometres:

Radio Shack - Nissan

Igor Antón knows that he's very vulnerable this day. His team is very weak, and he really needs the help of Mikel Astarloza and Koldo Fernández to keep the maglia rosa. The second part of the race, when they have to fight against the wind coming from the sea, they drop 4 more places to 19th.
And that part with strong crosswind (+40km/h) is were the Monster Energy is giving all they've got. This is the tactic: start on reserve, than give 100% in the second part, and try to minimize the loss in the last part with tailwind. ANd it pays off, as we set the best split time, even 3 seconds faster than Radio Shack! But the consequence is that Theo Bos gets dropped and also Zingle is about to get dropped.
2nd split time:

Monster Energy - Ford

Andy Schleck & Thomas De Gendt are having a great day, and with the finish in sight, they have almost closed the gap to the Euskaltel-team. Schleck knows he'll take over the maglia rosa, but is it enough to take the win today? Where Euskaltel rides a time of 40'13, the Monster Energy - Ford team is 1'59 faster and the time of 38'14 is enough to beat Radio Shack and take the win!!

Word from the DS
Fantastic, that's the only word I can think of. Our practice-hours really paid off, although we took a lot of risks with the high pace in the middle part (for those who care: all on dot 85 in the first part, dot 99 in the second part and dot 95 in the last part, and the weak TT-riders (under 70) didn't take over). Now it's up to Antón to attack again.
