EPIC - Season 1 Part 3

Nice to see our new signing Guido riding well, and Abasi seems to have some late season form.

@TMM: Of course, now you're backpedaling. You just were afraid we wouldn't like it Pfft

Quite disappointed by Kakhi... I thought he would be in real good shape as the team was chasing, but 17th is nowhere near I wanted to see him. Still it was a super-strong season and one or two faux pas don't hurt too much.

I worked on a report tonight, had dinner, thought I'd finish off in the morning. When I just came back on my room apparently my PC had restarted. I lost all my progress unfortunately. Nevertheless I managed to remember pretty much everything due to the screens. The report will therefore be a bit less detailed, but should still come tomorrow morning.

Welcome to stage 1 of the Tour of Beijing 2013. The weather looks good today. It's not too warm, a bit cloudy and the air quality is decent, which is as good as it can get in this region.

It takes a while, but eventually we get our first attack. Kamyshev (AST), Schnaidt (CSS) and McEvoy (TNE) form a small group of 3.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2172.jpg

Nowak (CCC) tries to chase this group and catch up.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2173.jpg

The sprinter teams don't seem to like the amount of riders ahead and speed up the pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2174.jpg

After a while the pack realizes this is useless and lets the break gain.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2175.jpg

The first intermediate sprint, 70km from the line, is won by Nowak. The gap is up to 4 minutes by now.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2176.jpg

The pack, lead by Bardiani, FDJ and Sky, therefore decides to speed up. With 50km to go the lead is under 3 minutes already.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2177.jpg

Schnaidt easily wins the second sprint, 40km from the line. The lead is just over 2 minutes.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2178.jpg

For the first time in a while the break is in sight again for the pack, as with 20km to go the gap is just 1m13.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2179.jpg

Drama in the pack! With 15km to go a mass crash occurs. Many major names are involved: Alinejad crashes in a corner and takes Costa, Dan Martin, Meersman, Bennati and many others with him.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2180.jpg

No time to wait in the pack. The break is still ahead and the pace is kept high.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2181.jpg

Over 100 riders are caught behind either due to crashing or due to being behind the crash.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2182.jpg

The situation is even worse for Mexican Champion Juarez though, as he has to abandon as a consequence of the injuries caused by the crash.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2183.jpg

With just under 10km to go the breakaway is caught. The pack doesn't slow down though.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2184.jpg

A new crash in the pack, with 8km to go! It's not as massive as the previous one, but there seem to be some major victims. Gesink, Albasini and Kruopis are the most notable names.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2186.jpg

The sprinter teams don't wait though and with 4km to go the sprint trains come to the front.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2187.jpg

Van Winden abandons as a consequence of the second crash.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2188.jpg

With 3km to go we have the following situation in front.
Boasson Hagen
O'CallaghanHanzen
BrookesNizzolo
Bouhanni
Stromberg

The other sprinters seem out of contention.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2189.jpg

With an incredible effort Renshaw, Dehaes and Viviani catch up. The question is though whether this has cost them too much energy.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2190.jpg

With 1km to go most sprinters launch their sprints. Only Brookes and Hanzen wait.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2191.jpg

A bit later Brookes and Hanzen launch as well. Stromberg and Viviani look strong though and have a higher speed.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2192.jpg

Renshaw surprisingly comes to the front with a massive pace! With 500 meters to go Hagen is still in the lead, although it doesn't seem like that will last very long.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2193.jpg

And indeed, with 300 meters to go Stromberg, who is the only one that can match Renshaw's speed, is leading with a good gap.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2194.jpg

At the line
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2195.jpg
Stromberg wins. Renshaw comes 2nd, Hanzen completes the podium. Bouhanni and Viviani come 4th and 5th.

The two groups involved with the crashes have merged. Lead by Albasini they make it over the line almost 2 and a half minute later than Stromberg.

So, finally got my HQ somewhat up to date. Exams over + sick days really helps you get stuff done Smile

Also, is Pologne even finished yet? Pfft

Good to see Nowak in another role than being leafout for Abundi Smile 3rd on the GC is only for one stage, but worth it Smile

Here I was cheering Gesink avoided the crash, only to have him crash a few kilometrers later Rolling Eyes

Good job by Renshaw, but my GC expectations are gone now.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Wow that was a destructive stage.... some luck and Hanzen could find himself decently placed in the GC by the end. Also good sprint, some days there are just better riders (though wasn't expecting Rensahw!).

Bouhanni 4th after an extended break is nice. Still kind of sucking though, in this field he should be on the podium.

Well it's Gesink, what do you expect...

Van Winden is expendable, don't worry Wink

And yes, that's exactly why I was celebrating, major crash and Gesink wasn't involved. Next corner he goes down as well..
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Of course my sprinter goes into the breakaway right from the start Rolling Eyes
I'm wondering if Schnaidt could have done something in such a reduced field..

But more importantly, De Vries made it through without time loss. Well done boy, now go on with making our last goal!

Drama in the pack! With 15km to go a mass crash occurs. Many major names are involved: Alinejad crashes in a corner and takes Costa, Dan Martin, Meersman, Bennati and many others with him.

Startlist

Spoiler
i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/Startlist_zpsb7939add.jpg

Welcome to the 2013 Gran Premio Piemonte. With 150km left to go, the break has an advantage of 2'31", so it's safe to say they'll stay way. There names:
Thwaites (TNE), Vandborg (CAN), Ista (IAM) and De Negri (VIN).

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1415_58_53-Greenshot_zpsff1ab001.jpg

Fast forward to the first climb, 30km out. The break still have an advantage of one minute, while Cannondale and Sky work together to bring them back.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_02_28-Greenshot_zpscc96087a.jpg

Shortly after that, Kakhi (CSS) and Sagan (CAN) attack, as Wiggins (SKY) looks on.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_04_16-Greenshot_zpsc3306857.jpg

Double attack by Sky! Instead of relying on their high class support, Froome and Sithembile go on the pursuit themselves. Let's see how this will work out!

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_05_17-Greenshot_zpsd3a95b25.jpg

On the descent, with 20km to go, Froome has been pulled back. At the front we have a group of six, 36" ahead. The names: Vandborg (CAN), Ista (IAM) and De Negri (VIN), Kakhi (CSS), Sagan (CAN) and Sithembile (SKY).

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_07_14-Greenshot_zps54aec621.jpg

In the short flat ahead of the last climb, Sithembile goes solo! Slight panic amongst the favourites...

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_08_58-Greenshot_zpse63cc4fd.jpg

Suddenly everything is back together. The 5 man group catch the Kenyan just in time for the them all to be caught by the pack. Will Skys other Kenyan make an impression now as we hit the climb?

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_10_17-Greenshot_zps67263ede.jpg

The two of them do, and Uran as well! The three Sky riders are accompanied in attack by Sagan (CAN), Kakhi (CSS), König (TNE) and Schröder (EUC). An amazing young presence in this group!

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_11_31-Greenshot_zps44457e6f.jpg

As we hit the hardest section, with 10km to go, Sagan, Kakhi and Uran are alone at the front. Uran can play it easy now, with Sithembile and Froome in behind, but he's also the worst sprinter in the group.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_13_52-Greenshot_zps6ad78ab2.jpg

Behind them, Roche (TST), Nocentini (ALM), Anton (EUS) and Gesink (BEL) caught up to the others. The gap is at about 30".

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_17_09-Greenshot_zpsb4deeae5.jpg

Uran decides to take the race to his opponents, with an attack on the descent, with 7km to go. He manages to get rid of Kakhi, but trying to distance Sagan on a descent was never going to work. They are currently 15" ahead of Kakhi, who is 32" ahead of the chasers (who have been joined by Majka (TST)).

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_18_46-Greenshot_zpsb1a30e7c.jpg

With 2000 metres to go, Kakhi is desperately trying to reach the duo. The winner is definitely going to be one of these three, surely Sagan is in pole position right now.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_21_38-Greenshot_zpsd3bae696.jpg

He caught them! 1300 metres to go and the three are back together. Will Kakhi take Sagans wheel, or will he try and continue on? Presumably the former.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_22_52-Greenshot_zps7a4c84aa.jpg

As the sprint opens up, it's obvious we have a battle for second place, really. Sagan is miles above the rest.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_23_55-Greenshot_zps990ffab0.jpg

Kakhi is absolutely dead from the earlier effort, he'll have to settle for third.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_24_40-Greenshot_zpsf4c3f227.jpg

Sagan wins it, unsurprisingly, while Uran will finish second ahead of Kakhi. In the background, you can see the chasers rounding the last corner.

i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/Dippofix/EPIC/Koln/2014-11-1416_25_23-Greenshot_zpsbe757ec0.jpg

They don't bother sprinting, oddly. Nocentini is the best Italian in fourth, whilst Froome fails to reach the Top 10. That was all from me, and as this was most likely my last report in EPIC (though never say never), thanks for reading my reports. Wink
