The 3rd stage is for the sprinters. The 224 kilometres between Marsala and Gala are almost completely flat, so Goss, Farrar & co are eager to win this one.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/1829/1etappe3.jpg

79km to go
Four riders form the break of the day, and at the first Intergiro, the gap reaches it's maximum of 7'13. Federico Canuti (Colnago) wins this sprint, in front of Kalle Kriit (Sony Ericsson), Giairo Ermeti (Androni) and Roberto De Padre (Farnese).
img21.imageshack.us/img21/5624/279km.jpg

31km to go
The gap decreases towards the 2nd Intergiro. Ermeti wins this sprint, followed by Canuto and De Padre. The gap to the peloton is 3'52. Do they stand a chance?
img214.imageshack.us/img214/2952/331km.jpg

7km to go
The answer is no. When the domestiques of Qantas, Omega Pharma and Monster Energy start their chase, the gap decreases very rapidly. With 7km to go, Canuti and Ermeti are the last 2 to get caught.
img191.imageshack.us/img191/914/47km.jpg

6km to go
A crash in the peloton! 2 riders collided and took more than 40 riders with them down to the tarmac. Among them are Bauke Mollema, Sefano Garzelli and GC number 8 Janez Brajkovic! They'll loose 5'20 today, so their GC-chances are over. One rider has to abandon the Giro: Rasmus Quaade, the young Danish time trial-specialist from Sony Ericsson breaks his collarbone.
img337.imageshack.us/img337/3407/56km.jpg

2km to go
We try to set up a nice train, with Kelderman-De Gendt-Ligthart-Bos, as Bos is feeling great today (+4). But into the last 3 kilometres, it gets derailed, when Keldermant misjudges a corner and almost misses it. Because of it, Bos finds himself fully in the wind and tries to catch the wheel of Davis-Goss-Swift in front of him.
img687.imageshack.us/img687/4720/62km.jpg

Ultimo kilometro
Matthew Goss launches his jump entering the last kilometre. Nobody is able to follow that, also because his strongest opponents (Farrar, EBH, Petacchi) were too far behind.
img683.imageshack.us/img683/2505/71km.jpg

Finish
None of the sprinters can be a threat to Goss, who gets his 9th win of this season! Grandpa Petacchi shows he still has the sprinting skills and sprints to the 2nd place, in front of Tyler Farrar, Alan Davis and Giacomo Nizzolo. And what about Theo Bos? Not able to keep the wheel of Swift, he finishes in 10th position.

Today's winner
img502.imageshack.us/img502/8576/10goss.jpg

Word from the DS
We hoped to do better with Bos, but suddenly he lost his good position behind leadout Ligthart. After that the chance for a Top 3 was over. Anyway, no time loss for Schleck today, and we lost a few opponents today because of time loss. Tomorrow is the last stage at Sicily, with some tough climbs!

Unlucky build up in the final sprint for Bos, leaving him in 10th, never mind another chance will comeSad

The 4th and last stage at the isle of Sicily is the longest in this Giro. No more then 256 kilometres between Gela and Messina, including 2 mountains ( Portella Mandrazzi -81km to go, 12.4km at 6.0%- and Portella San Rizzo -11km to go, 8.7km at 5.1%) and a descend towards the finish near the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
img31.imageshack.us/img31/6385/1etappe4.jpg

229km to go
After a restless start with a few attacks and the Radio Shack - Nissan team pulling them all back, it's the GC-leader himself who tells the others that the stage is still long and tough, so they'll have to take it easy in the beginning of it.
img197.imageshack.us/img197/4650/2229km.jpg

182km to go
Nevertheless, a group of 7 try to create a gap, including Alan Davis (Qantas), Mauro Finetto (Liquigas) and Francis De Greef. But they'll get caught soon after.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/6739/3182km.jpg

113km to go
Except an 40 kilometres lasting solo-attack by Lotto's Jan Kuyckx, the peloton remains calm. But Kuyckx get caught and some of the riders sprint for the points and bonus seconds at the first Intergiro. It's a double for our team, with Jan Bos & Andy Schleck taking 10 and 6 points/seconds.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/6793/4113km.jpg

81km to go
Then the 12.4 kilometre ascend of the Portella Mandrazzi starts. Halfway up the climb, Astana's Francesco Masciarelli attacks but he gets caught pretty soon. Francis De Greef uses Masciarelli as a springboard to launch another attack. ALthough he doesn't create a big ga, he receives what he wants: the maximum points at the summit of the climb. He's followed by Michael Rasmussen and Thomas Rohregger. After the summit, a group of 101 riders merge.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/3452/681km.jpg

50km to go
Cycling fans raise their eyebrows when they see the Maglia rosa all by himself in front of the peloton after the descend. Apparantly, he wanted to show his downhill skills and has a 40-second gap to the peloton. We decide to let the other teams chase Nibali.
img543.imageshack.us/img543/807/750km.jpg

44km to go
As Nibali is to collect 10 bonus seconds at the 2nd Intergiro, we try to get Schleck some seconds to. And he manages to get 4 seconds. Still '31 behind Nibali.
img535.imageshack.us/img535/9558/844km.jpg

26km to go
It takes the peloton 18 more kilometres to catch Nibali. Was this a foolish move by The Shark, or is he that strong? We'll find out soon, as the peloton is preparing for the ascend of the Portella San Rizzo.
img215.imageshack.us/img215/3813/926km.jpg

17km to go
After 2 ascending kilometres, Schleck uses his teammate Thomas De Gendt to attack. The 2 create a small gap to the others.
img51.imageshack.us/img51/7771/1018km.jpg

16km to go
The first one to react is Michele Scarponi. He passes the 2, and Schleck counters. 17 seconds behind them come Joaquím Rdríguez, Nibali, José Rujano and Rein Taaramäe. Igor Antón follows at '25.
img854.imageshack.us/img854/6553/1117km.jpg

15km to go
Scarponi and Schleck get caught by Rodríguez and Nibali. This is the moment for Schleck to launch another attack, and this time he gives all he has got!
img62.imageshack.us/img62/9207/1215km.jpg

11km to go
Schleck creates a gap of 15 seconds, and has to settle fown for a while to find a new energy source. But the 3 behind him, aren't able to close the gap. At the summit, 11km to go, they're '13 behind. Igor Antón joins them after the summit. José Rujano follows at 1'04, Rein Taaramäe at 1'28, Simon Spilak and Ivan Basso at 1'50 and the peloton (including Cunego & Evans) at 2'20.
img853.imageshack.us/img853/1715/1311km.jpg

7km to go
Apparantly Schleck has found the energy and enlarges the gap in the descend. The 4 chasers are looking at each other: "you lead the chase!" - "no you, I'm tired" - "no you, I don't feel like". So with 7km to go, they're '47 behind.
img515.imageshack.us/img515/8316/147km.jpg

3km to go
Schleck has finished the descend and has reached the Mediterranean shore. The 4 are 43 behind, only because Nibali did what he had to do as the GC-leader.
img856.imageshack.us/img856/3388/152500m.jpg

Finish
But it's not enough to catch Andy Schleck, who celebrates his 2nd win of the season. But is it enough to take over the lead in the Giro?
img252.imageshack.us/img252/261/16finish.jpg

2nd place
Antón wins the sprint for the 2nd place at '36, followed by Scarponi, Rodríguez and Nibali. ANd because Nibbles didn't get bonus seconds, he looses his pink jersey to that guy from Luxembourg!
Rujano, Taaramäe and Spilak follow at 1'38 and a group of 23, including Basso, Cunego, Evans and De Gendt, at 2'41. Giairo Ermeti, who was in the BOTD yesterday had to abandon with a broken collarbone after a crash in the last descend.

Word from the DS
Although the goal wasn't to get the maglia rosa this early in the Giro, we're extremely happy with Andy's win and his gained time. But too be honest: we don't mind losing it in one of the next stages by a breakaway (but don't tell the press!)

Good job by Andy! Now he needs to keep the pink!

@ all: Thanks a lot!! This was one of my best stages ever, my first GT-stage win on extreme.
But I won't tire the domestiques to much in chasing a breakaway the next 2 (flat) stages. Maximum 1-2 a stage, so they have energy left when the important mountain stages show up. Or perhaps it's even better to be in a BOTD with a rider... I'll sleep on that!
Next stage maybe tuesday, for sure wednesday.

After 4 stages at Sicily, the entir Giro-circus takes the ferry to the mainland of Italy. Stage 5 is in the province of Calabria and has the start in Villa San Giovanni. The finish waits after 183 kilometes in Amantea. The first part of the route is hilly, the second part flat, so expect another mass sprint.
img198.imageshack.us/img198/1715/1etappe5.jpg

153km to go
30 kilometres int the stage, the first KOTM-sprint is waitin for the riders. Francis De Greef is the first to reach the summit of the Barrittiere and becomes the virtual leader in the KOTM-rankings.
img80.imageshack.us/img80/2128/2153km.jpg

135km to go
A threesome in the attack after the descend: Hayden Roulston, showing the new Radio Shack-jersey, Tom Dumoulin and Angelo Furlan (Androni) are the lucky ones to get permission of the peloton to form a break away. But out of the peloton, 7 others are attacking.
img33.imageshack.us/img33/7756/3135km.jpg

108km to go
The 3 become 10 and again, the peloton has no problems with it. So Daniel Oss (Liquigas) is the first at the summit of the Arzona, collecting the maximum points. Besides Rouston, Dumoulin and Furlan, also Jan Kuyckx (Lotto), Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Walter Proch (Colnago). Ian Stannard (Sky), Jos van Emden (Rabobank) and Alessandro Donati (Acqua et Sapone) are present in this group. The peloton follows at 5'30.
img710.imageshack.us/img710/8409/4108km.jpg

85km to go
After the descend of the Arzona, the BOTD crosses the line of the 1st Intergiro. They don't sprint for the points, so Roulston Oss and Furlan are the first 3. The peloton follows at 6'28.
img716.imageshack.us/img716/3078/585km.jpg

30km to go
In the next 55 kilometres, the gap decreases and at the 2nd Intergiro it is brought down to 2 minutes.
img233.imageshack.us/img233/2953/630km.jpg

20km to go
Alessandro Donati tries to prevent the inevitable. He attacks with 20km to go, while the peloton is about to catch the BOTD.
img840.imageshack.us/img840/9991/720km.jpg

3km to go
Of course, Donati's attempt was pretty unsuccesful. The teams of the sprinters are forming their trains. Well, 2 trains to be more precise. Only Qantas (Goss) and Omega Pharma (Farrar) do it, while the other sprinters take place in the wheel of Gos and Farrar. Theo Bos take place in the wheel of Tyler Farrar.
img713.imageshack.us/img713/5439/83km.jpg

Ultimo kilometro
That place looked good, but the Omega-train falls apart shortly before entering the last kilometre. Farrar jumps to the wheel of Mark Renshaw (who is behind Matthew Goss) and Bos has to decide what to do. But he finds himself in no man's land, seeing the Qantas train (Davis-Goss-Renshaw-Farrar) ride away and the other sprinters (Petacchi and co) passing him.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/3887/91km.jpg

500m to go
So Bos starts to sprint with 1km to go, and it's pretty frustrating to see that he gets outsprinted by Andy Schleck.............
img843.imageshack.us/img843/7589/10500m.jpg

Finish
And that's number 2 in this Giro d'Italia for Matthew Goss, and the 10th of the season. He ha to give his last leadout Alan Davis a big hug, becaue he got launched perfectly, again.
Mark Renshaw makes it an Aussie double, with Tyler Farrar in 3rd. And our guys? Schleck beat Bos for place 13.

Word from the DS
Really don't know what happened in that sprint. Suddenly Bos lost his wheel and when he started the sprint (1200m) he even got passed by Schleck... But the most important is: no time loss, no energy wasted!

Stage 6 is the first of two stages in the region of Campania. The route is short, only 154.5 kilometres between Amantea and Sapri, with a long climb in the last part and some descending cornery roads along the coast in the last 10 kilometres.
img4.imageshack.us/img4/434/1etappe6.jpg

66km to go
The first part of the race was pretty boring, untill the moment Jan Kuyckx (Lotto) decides to attack. It's his 4th time in 6 races he's in a breakaway, unbelievable! This time he's joined by former Giro-winner Danilo Di Luca. After his doping ban, he never ever gets near his previous abilities, so we all know he was banned justly. But the two have a 2'50 gap to the peloton at this moment.
img13.imageshack.us/img13/5378/266km.jpg

53km to go
The peloton takes it easy, so at the 2nd Intergiro sprint, the advantage of the leading duo to the peloton has increased to 4'30.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/7671/353km.jpg

25km to go
The peloton starts to chase the 2 leaders, and most of the work is done by Lampre. They think that their sprinter Petacchi has a chance today. We try to keep the pace a little easy, so that our man Theo Bos can ride the ascend of the Passo la Colla (10.8km at 3.8%) without using his energy reserves.
Di Luca is the first at the summit, followed by Kuyckx. The peloton follows at 2'50.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/6138/425km.jpg

4km to go
We have reached the coast and are '22 behind the 2 leaders. At this moment we show our tactical plan to the other teams. In the routebook, it looks like that the roads of the last 4 kilometres are straight, without corners. But it is the opposite: the roadsare very cornery and narrow, so it's difficult for riders to pass a sprint train. So we send our train (De Gendt-Kelderman-Ligthart-Bos) to the lead of the peloton and use the full width of the road.
img14.imageshack.us/img14/7425/54kmf.jpg

1500m to go
The other teams try to pass us, but they have to break for a corner every time. Ligthart starts his sprint as the last lead out man. And you can see GC-leader Schleck in the wheel of Bos.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/6686/61500m.jpg

Ultimo kilometro
Entering the last kilometre and Ligthart is in the lead. Behind him, Theo Bos starts his jump. On the inside of the road is Farrar's lead out man Danielle Pietropolli, who is losing speed.
img811.imageshack.us/img811/2505/71km.jpg

400m to go
400 metres to go and Theo Bos has taken over. He has a nice lead over Farrar and Goss. Can he win this sprint???????
img838.imageshack.us/img838/7662/8400m.jpg

Finish
Yeah baby yeah!!!! Theo Bos takes his biggest win since he switched from the track to the road. And to make the succes even bigger, Andy Schleck manages to slip to the 2nd place and taking 12 bonus seconds. Farrar takes the 3rd place, and Pim Ligthart the 4th. Jonathan Bellis (Saxo Bank) has to abandon after he dislocated his elbow in a crash.

Word from the DS
Please hit me, so I can wake up..... Our masterplan worked perfectly, bringing Bos the win. But that Schleck got 2nd????? Unbelievable. And I really wonder why the other teams didn't studied the road book and the real life situation a bit better. Anyway, great 2nd stage win. Tomorrow: mountain top finish!
