We have no idea how good/bad Porte is, but all logic says that he shouldn't be able to hang on to his jersey all the way to Milano.
And even if he wins, I can assure you that he's not going to the Tour

Saxo Bank has signed yet another superstar: Richie Porte
Do you want to take the sarcasm out of that statement??
I think that from here, one of three things can happen:
1. Cadel, Vino, Basso and Nibali work together and get all that time back
2. Sastre and Wiggins Keep their advantage over the Vino group and make up the difference on Porte, or,
3. Porte and Arroyo fight it out for the title of 'Most Unlikely Winner of a GT Since Pereiro'
I agree that it's very unlikely that Porte will be able to hang on, but as we saw today, anything can happen, and while Arroyo has finished a GT, he's never gone into the last week of a GT in a position like this. I think Porte is in better form and has the bigger engine, but it remains to be seen wether or not he can dig deep enough to hang on. How amazing would it be if he did hang on, though? |

Has a neo-pro ever won a GT before? I really don't think Porte will maintain his lead, but does anyone know what the best neo-pro result in a GT GC is?
Was Coppi a neopro in 1940 when he won the Giro? In 1939 he was a semipro, apparently. |

Plus - that was Coppi. And it was also 1940 - times have changed, and unless he's the new Merckx (the only one to get close to Coppi), no chance

You've discovered my weakness.
I know next to nothing about the history of cycling

And I raise you all Charly Gaul and dare any of you to challenge me.
I will note I've only looked at isso's post and assume this is about the best climbers of all time. |

If, like me, it's the history of the actual racing you want to know about, as opposed to the history of the race (like most people), I can reccomend a couple of excellent books.

Like The Rider, sure it's not a historical book, but you pick up a lot of cycling history while reading it.
Plus it is the greatest book ever written about the sport, so it's a win-win.

The one who lost 20 minutes on most non-raining mountain stages?

Yeah, that one.
Seriously, you can nitpick with every climber. Vinreque and Impe were always out in front of the leaders picking up KOM points, and never fought them. Poulidour, Anquiteil, Bartali, and Coppi were all pushed by their great rival. Pantani was doped out of his fucking mind. Bahamontes was scared of descending and wouldn't push himself because he wanted someone to go down the climb with (and back in the day their were a lot fewer mountain finishes).
Gaul was certainly his best in bad weather, but in terms of pure climbing ability, I'm going with him.
Also, if anyone mentions Lance in this discussion (or my spelling of rider's names), you are unequivocally an idiot. |

Edvald Boasson Hagen is the greatest climber to ever have existed...

I'm still going with Pantani and Fuente as equal top best climbers.

Love the fact that the strongest rider have the weakest teams
No surprise that they had no chance yesterday.
Vinokourov said afterwards, everybody was looking on Astana but they weren`t able

Wasn't Ullrich a neopro in 1996 when he came in 2nd in the Tour de France?

Cadel Evans always seem to be alone. No matter how good his team is on paper they suck. Vino's is decent I think. Grivko, Stangelj and Jufre are decent helpers that will keep up for the most of the stage. Evans don't have a single rider capable of going over a mountain.

But he may thought that before signing for such a team....
He had much better options than that one. |
