Music started going downhill fast in the 80s, if you ask me.
the late 60s were the highlights in the history of music, where we had The Doors, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Dylan, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane (this list goes on and on), what have we today? Lady Gaga... okay... Sure hope she won't become timeless cuz I'm sick of her already
Cmon, this is not about Bieber or Lady Gaga, popular music is shite in general, not a single new idea, just recyclation and thefts of what was already done. Between 60-90s, there were great groups, that were winning hit-charts. Who is it now? Only teenage girl-like guys, mada-faka bad niggas or hipster groups trying to be new Oasis.

Totally agree with this statement Avin, these days music just seems to be manufactured by the likes of crap talent shows (X Factor for one)

I have to ask whether you actually read the article?
The biggest selling album of the past decade belongs to Adele. Who doesn't fall into any of your categories.

Here is something to think about. 17 Years ago people were "singing" and dancing to a song called maccarena, where they didnt understand a single word except for well, Maccarena. Today people are "singing" and dancing to a song where they dont know the lyrics excepth for 3 words of the chorus (Ey sexy lady)... So essentially, it took almost a generation to write a song thats the same as maccarena, just that they forgot the name...
Ah well, lets not kid ourselves... Popular Culture has ruined music. But I have to say, that the time we live in now is the best for music with all the development in technology and so on. But said music is not found in the charts, but on the small concert stages all over the world and in the dusty corners of record stores!
Actually, todays music is excatley how the band Porcupine Tree described it in their song "sound of Muzak"! I quote:
Music of the future will not entertain
Its only ment to repress and neutralize your brain...
I believe they got some sort of point... I know its not everyones cup o tea, but you may want to give it a listen:

Don't blame the time. There is good music in every decade, you just have to listen to it.
And that's even without mentioning Guns'n'Roses, Metallica, Michael Jackson, U2, Madonna, R.E.M. (just of the top of my head) from the 80's and bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Oasis, Blur and all the artists taking Hip-Hop to the masses (2Pac, Dr. Dre etc.)
Each decade has great music in it. The genres change because music is dynamic and each young generation want something different from their parents.

Well, i would like to know what of recent music can become classic, because i see and hear only recycled shit...
First I think it's hard to say which bands will become classic while they're contemporary. Their tunes have to show some stamina. I would expect artists like Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, The Killers, Band of Horses, Eminiem and Coldplay won't just disappear into oblivion. Not all of them are my cup of tea - but then again that's taste and taste differs between people/generations. On a very present note I think Adele and Lana del Rey has what it takes to become modern day diva's (if they can keep their shit together).
And in line with the recycling: Pretty much all of the "classic rock" acts from the 60's and 70's stole partly from the 50's rock'n'roll but especially from 30's blues.
For example Led Zeppelin stole parts of "The Lemon Song" from Howlin Wolf (Howard Burnett) got sued and put him on as co-author. Howlin Wolf had stolen the song from Robert Johnson, who again had been heavily inspired by some of his predecessors.
The only reason we recognize the inspiration in today's music is that we know the bands that inspired them as well - we don't know the bands that inspired Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Beatles, Stones etc as well...

Well, I think a big portion of the more active users on the forum is busy right now, anyways. Ian Butler just timed it so he looks like a spammer. And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you, Atlantius!
