I'm going to guess at Wout Poels FTW And Barredo for a Top 10. Andy agonizingly looses the title again and performs worse than his brother.

@ Freitas - The most crazy thing about him is his amazing development. He's a great climber by now, and I expected him to do much better than he did.
@ sam - Actually it was Gesink crashing out in yellow. Cunego was second.
Sorry for the lack of activity here in the past week. I simply took a week off from playing and focused on some other things instead. I'm back now nevertheless.
Lastly, I have a small question I'd like to ask, about the Vuelta. As you know, we're sending Fuglsang there as leader, and with just a few race days this season, we expect him to do pretty well. However, he doesn't really have the best climbing support.
Therefore I'd like to hear what you think about maybe sending Van den Broeck to Spain as well, without real top shape. In other words, as a luxury helper. I started thinking about it when I realized that doesn't have a lot of race days either and could without problems handle a Vuelta. He could also go for a stage win or two.
So, what do you think?
Also, please note that Martin Therkildsen's victory in Klasika Ordiziako was simulated, since I didn't notice the race on our calendar. Sorry for that.

VdB has a luxury helper? I don't know if it's the best idea because he may burst with Fulgsang in the mountains. Also can you post Balloni stats? Because he made 17th in the Tour. |

That wont happen. With ~80 fitness he'll be weaker than Fuglsang. Plus, he'd be protecting him on the climbs, not setting the pace.
For Balloni, I don't have them at the moment, but he's around 80 MO with decent secondary stats.

Well, if Fuglsang can´t handle it, you still have V.Den Broeck

My first post on your story. Firstly, can I just say what an entertaining story you have put together. Great stuff! And I have picked up some great tips along the way! Regarding your uber domestique idea, I did that using gesink to work for Nieve in la veulta and it worked a treat. Nieve won with gesink in 5th. You'll blow all your opponents helpers away in the mountains! Also fugslang finished 6 secs ahead of gesink, so u may even win!! Good luck and keep up the good work! |

@ all - Thanks for the adivice. I've decided to send Van den Broeck with Fuglsang.
@ toddy - I'm very glad to hear such things. Let's hope the tactic works as well for me as it did for you.

After a dramatic Tour with many surprises, we move on to the last Grand Tour of the year, the Vuelta a España. It could turn out to be an incredibly interesting race, since a lot of the major stage racers in the professional peloton are missing.
1 | Juan José Cobo | Geox - TMC | 84h38'47 | 2 | Wouter Poels | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 5'47 | 3 | Javier Moreno | Caja Rural | + 12'29 | 4 | Joaquim Rodriguez | Katusha Team | + 14'30 | 5 | Thomas Voeckler | Team Europcar | + 14'57 | 6 | Frank Schleck | Leopard Trek | + 19'15 | 7 | Juan Manuel Gárate | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 24'49 | 8 | Juan Mauricio Soler | Movistar Team | + 27'10 | 9 | Philippe Gilbert | OmegaPharma - Lotto | + 27'40 | 10 | Ruben Plaza | Movistar Team | + 27'51 |
Spoiler 11 | Julian Sanchez Pimienta | Caja Rural | + 28'49 | 12 | Antonio Piedra | Andalucia Caja Granada | + 29'58 | 13 | Robert Kiserlovski | Pro Team Astana | + 31'59 | 14 | Jakob Fuglsang | Leopard Trek | + 34'35 | 15 | Iñigo Cuesta | Caja Rural | + 39'41 | 16 | Jan Tratnik | Quickstep Cycling Team | + 40'36 | 17 | Daniel Moreno | Katusha Team | + 43'34 | 18 | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 45'04 | 19 | Rafael Valls | Geox - TMC | + 45'36 | 20 | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | + 46'24 | 21 | Marco Marcato | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | + 50'35 | 22 | Rigoberto Urán | Sky ProCycling | + 51'30 | 23 | José Herrada | Caja Rural | + 52'24 | 24 | Peter Kennaugh | Sky ProCycling | + 52'40 | 25 | Kevin Seeldraeyers | Quickstep Cycling Team | + 54'05 | 26 | David de la Fuente | Geox - TMC | + 54'19 | 27 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 55'07 | 28 | Christian Vande Velde | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 58'15 | 29 | Josep Jufré | Pro Team Astana | + 1h06'49 | 30 | Simon Spilak | Lampre - ISD | + 1h07'23 |
Juan José Cobo's complete focus on the Vuelta turned out to be an excellent idea. The Spaniard hammered all of the other contenders on the climbs, winning the race by a huge margin over Wouter Poels. Third man on the podium, Javier Moreno, was the biggest surprise of all, and showed the field's weakness.
We start off the race on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, with three stages. First it's a short prologue to open some smaller gaps between the riders. After that we'll head for a shorter road stage. The third and last day in the islands will be interesting however, as it finishes atop the long Pico del Teide.
The next day we head back onto the continent, where a pretty easy first week continues. Apart from the uphill finish on day six, it's all about the sprinters these days. This is where they'll need to gather points for the green jersey.
Overall, it's a quite easy second week as well. Four of the seven stages are pure mass sprint ones, where the sprinters will continue to thrive. There's also a longish time trial in Valladolid, on stage ten. That'll shake up the GC.
But the main highlights this week will be stage 11 and 12. First the brutal mountain top finish on the infamous Bola del Mundo, where we might see the biggest selection in all of the race. But also the next day will be interesting. Three big climbs on the route, although the last one is pretty far from the finish.
Then, we finally hit the slightly harder final seven days. Three uphill finishes, including the queen stage, which finishes atop an eternally long climb up to Pic del Maià . That's the last chance to open up the large time gaps for the favourites.
I think it'll all be decided in the time trial, on the penultimate day. If it's still a close battle between the top guns in the GC, then it could change massively after this day. To end off what I hope will be a nice Vuelta, a circuit race in Barcelona!
Project squad:
As you've known since the beginning of the season, it's Fuglsang who'll lead us through this race. I reckon the route suits him pretty well, with not too much climbing. A Top 5, or possibly even a podium, is definitely within reach.
Van den Broeck, Lagutin and last year's Tour KoM jersey winner, Bonnin will back him up in the mountains. That's a solid help.
For the many flat stages, Van Hummel and Bozic will both get their chances. The latter has quite a lot of race days, due to a long season, and might get tired later in the race. We hope for at least one stage win from these two.
Favourites and startlist coming up next!
