@ all: Thank you, I'll go for the win with Andy. As there are pretty less TT-kilometres, he will ride this one (and the Vuelta), and Gesink will aim for the Tour. The route will be very challenging and I fear for all the sprinters and non-climbers and the time limit.
Ivan Basso is a big question mark. The two-times winner (2006 and 2010) of the Giro left Liquigas last winter after the team got relegated to the Continental Tour and joined Garmin - Cervélo. But he was very invisible in the first months of the season. So it is unclear if he uses this Giro as a preparation for the Tour de France as last year, or if he's aiming for his 3rd Giro-win. He is very good in the mountains, pretty average in the hilly stages and can ride a better timee trial than some of the other GC-contenders.
Damiano Cunego is an other Italian former winner of the Giro. Il Piccolo Principe won the GT already back in 2004. He rode a good spring season with podium places in the Amstel and LBL. His weakest point will be his climbing abilities, what can count against him with some tough mountain top finishes.
Aussie Cadel Evans forms a very strong couple with Joaquím Rodríguez in the Katusha-team and will ride his 3rd Giro. For sure, his big goal this year will be the Tour (2nd last year) but he wants to improve his 5th place from 2010. He's good in everything, so he will be a serious candidate for the win!
One of the greatest favourites for the overall win is Vincenzo Nibali. Just as his former team mate Ivan Basso, he also left Liquigas and joined the new Radio Sahck - Nissan team. After two 3rd places, he's looking for his first win in his home country and has the overall capacities to do it. Especially because he is in great form, with a GC-podium in the Tour de Romandie.
Michele Scarponi left Lampre already after one season and fills in the empty place of Cadel Evans in the BMC-team. Being one of the best Italian GC-riders, he is still looking for his first podium in the Giro. Being one of the best climbers he is capable in doing it, although his TT-abilities are lacking.
Andy Schleck finished 2nd in the Giro of 2007 and has one goal: winning his first GT. He is the best climber of all riders, and with only a few TT-kilometres, he can minimize the loss there. The man to beat?
Of course, the favourites to win the GC are also the favourites to win the KOTM-jersey. But there are some others that can win it, whom are also outsiders to get on the podium in the GC.
Euskaltels Igor Antón is one of the best climbers in the world. But his weak time trial skills and the fact that he has a weak day in a GC very often, doesn't make him a favourite. He had a good spring season, with 2 stage wins in the Pais Vasco. But he has already raced 34 racedays, and has his Vuelta coming up in the fall, so the question is if he goes for the GC and KOTM-jersey, or if he is aiming for a stage win.
Stefano Garzelli won the Giro d'Italia in his previous life, back in 2000. He's already 38 years old, but don't count him out in the mountains.
Bauke Mollema is 13 years younger than Garzelli, and improving every year. The question is if he will focus on the GC, instead of attacking a getting a stage win. He has the climbing and timetrialing abilities to finish in the top 10, maybe higher!
Domenico Pozzovivo, leader of the Colnago - CSF team, is one of the better Italian climbers, but won't ride a top 3 in the GC because of his time trial. A stage win and maybe the KOTM-jersey could be possible. When he improves his 9th place in the GC from 2008, he will ride a great Giro.
Joaquím Rodríguez will be happy with th efew TT-kilometres in this Giro, as that is the reason he hasn't made it to the podium of a GT so far. His spring season was great, with 3 stage wins in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and podiums in the AGR and LBL.
José Rujano has finished twice at the podium of the Giro, 3rd in 2005 and 2nd last year. He is eager to repeat that result, although the competition looks stronger this year.

The question is if a sprinter will win the Points-ranking, as there are only a few sprinters stages this Giro.
Edvald Boasson Hagen had a great season last year, but with the arrival of Mark Cavendish, there was no more place for him in Team Sky. He surprisingly chose for Sony Ericsson, the new team of manager Brian Nygaard. He hasn't won a race so far this year, but is capable of winning any sprint, especially when the terrain isn't flat.
Theo Bos is improving every year after his switch from the track, but still looking for his first big win. Will it come this Giro?
Tyler Farrar left Garmin - Cervélo last year, and joined the Omega Pharma - Quick Step combination. He already won some sprints this year and is the best sprinter on paper this Giro.
Young Russian Denis Galimzyanov isn't afraid in the sprints, and is a danger to take a surprising win.
Matthew Goss was the king of the early season. He was dominant in Oman and Qatar and took some great wins for his new Qantas team. Is his form great again?
Thanks to a wildcard for Farnese Vini, 22-year-old Andrea Guardini can try to be the successor of Alessandro Petacchi as the best Italian sprinter.
But Alessandro Petacchi is trying to win another Giro stage. Ale Jet, already 38 years old, won a stage in the Tirreno, so he is still capable of winning. Can he do the same in possibly his last Giro?
Not being a last leadout for Cavendish after his transfer to Rabobank, Mark Renshaw can finally ride for his own chances. He already won a sprint in the Circuit de Sarthe, can he also do it in a World Tour race?
Another crown prince of the Italian sprinting. Liquigas Fabio Sabatini is lookin to take over the throne of Petacchi and the Giro is the podium he can try it.
This is where the riders do it for the next 21 days: Edited by dienblad on 07-01-2012 15:33
The preparation is done, the teams have climatised at Sicily, the bikes have been cleaned, the riders legs shaved and the families have been kissed goodbye: let's start the Giro d'Italia!!
The first stage is a difficult one. The 167 kilometres between Palermo and Castellemmare del Golfo are very hilly and include 3 KOTM-sprints and a hilly final towards the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
165km to go
The award of the first attack of the Giro goes to Ruggero Marzoli! He give shis Acqua et Sapone team some media attention, but is caught very quickly.
127km to go
Our sponsorgoal this Giro is to win the KOTM-ranking. We have to chances to achieve it: waiting for the last climbs with Andy Schleck and getting in attacks with Francis De Greef.
The last one tried to collect the most points at the first climb of the day. But shortly before the summit, he gets overtaken by Ángel Madrazo (Movistar) and Michael Rasmussen (Saxo Bank). Oh well, 3rd place is the first KOTM-point.
72km to go
While De Greef cruises on and takes place in the peloton again, Madrazo and Rasmussen continue their attack. They get joined by Rasmussens former team mate Bram Tankink (Rabobank). Madrazo takes the 3 points at the 2nd KOTM-sprint of the day. The 3 get followed at 1'0 by an other threesome: Mauro Santambrogio (BMC), Alessandro Bertolini (Androni) and Jan Kuyckx (Lotto). Lonesome Eros Capecchi (Liquigas) tried a little later to bridge the gap and is 2'24 behind. The peloton follows at 5'26.
43km to go
The first two groups emerge before the first of two ascends of the Alcano, where the 3rd and last KOTM-sprint is located. Again, Madrazo wins the sprint, in front of Rasmussen and Tankink. Capecchi follows at 1'48 and the peloton, were Katusha and Euskaltel make the pace, at 4'25.
28km to go
5 of the 6 leaders sprint for the points and bonus seconds given at the 2nd Intergiro. Rasmussen is the first here, followed by Santambrogio and Madrazo. The soil rider that doesn't sprint, Jan Kuyckx loses contact with the leading group and will eventually finish behind the first peloton. That peloton is still 4'25 behind (Capecchi is in between at 1'20), so it looks like the first stage will be won by a breakaway.
18km to go
The riders have started the 2nd ascend of the Alcano (4.5km at 4.7%). The 5 leaders stay together, no one wants to attack. But back in the peloton (3'36 behind) we see why Euskaltel and Katusha were leading the chase. Their leaders Igor Antón and Joaquím Rodríguez attack. As there are 15 kilometres left after the summit, we decide not to react and take the lead of the pace in the peloton.
15km to go
The 5 have reached the summit of the Alcano. Antón and Rodríguez follow at 2'19 and the peloton at 3'20. Because of the gap of a minute, some of the GC-contenders (Nibali, Scarponi) get nervous and attack. We stay calm and let the domestiques ride on a high pace.
7km to go
With succes, because 7 kilometres before Castellemmare del Golfo, Antón and Rodríguez get caught. The 5 leaders (Capecchi has been caught) are 2'10 ahead of the peloton, so they will decide who will win the first stage of this Giro.
2.5km to go
2500 metres remaining and Michael Rasmussen is in the worst position of the leading group. Also because he is the lousiest sprinter of the 5, he tries to surprise them with a long sprint.
1km to go
Rasmussen is still in the lead entering the ultimo kilometro, but Madrazo and Bertolini are about to overtake him!
Finish
And the win goes to the oldest of the 5! Alessandro Bertolini takes his second Giro stage in his career (first one was in 2008) at the age of 40, outsprinting Madrazo and Santambrogio. Tankink gets 4th, Rasmussen 5th.
Peloton
Damiano Cunego wins the sprint of the first peloton for place 6 at 1'28, in front of Michele Scarponi and Andy Scheck. All of the GC-favourites are in this group of 59 riders.

Word from the DS
Finally, the Giro has started and we can look back satisfied at the first stage. Our goal was not to loose time today, as Andy Schleck isn't in his best form yet and he needs the first few stages to reach it.
Stage 2, and the favourites for the GC already have to show themselves. In the 28km long individual time trial with start and finish in Trapani, the riders have to climb the Erice. That means 630 height metres in a 11.2km long climb at an average gradient of 5.2%, with parts over 10%. After the summit awaits a descend back to Trapani.
Early starter David Zabriskie (Garmin - Cervélo) has set the best time so far: 42'49. Francis De Greef rides a very good ITT, although he looses time in the descend. 2nd time so far in 43'02.
Franco Pellizotti is a luxury domestique this Giro for Damiano Cunego, and rides a good ITT. New best time, one second faster than Zabriskie.
But his time won't last long, while Janez Brajkovic crushes Pellizotti's time. 42'11 for the rider of Radio Shack - Nissan.
Than an enormous surprise: Igor Antón, considered as one of the weakest time trialists of all GC-contenders is '24 faster than Brajkovic: 41'47.
We're about to see if Ivan Basso has started this Giro with the goal to win, or to get in shape for the Tour. With a time of 43'24 (37th in total) the answer is clear: to get in shape for the Tour.
Last years's number 2 José Rujano rides a pretty good ITT: 42'51, 15th in total.
While the favourites have started, these are the split times at the summit of the Erice:
1. Vincenzo Nibali 27'32
2. Igor Antón +1
3. Andy Schleck +7
4. Joaquím Rodríguez +32
5. Damiano Cunego +32
6. Janez Brajkovic +35
7. Simon Spilak +41
8. Michele Scarponi +42
9. Francis De Greef +43
10. Cadel Evans +54
The same question as for Basso counts for Cadel Evans. And the answer looks the same. Because an Evans in top shape would have done better than 8th place in total in 42'32.
Vincenzo Nibali didn't enjoy the beautiful (panoramic) view in the ummit and set the best split time. He even extends his lead in the descend, being one of the best downhillers in the cycling world. First time in 41'25.
Joaquím Rodríguez drops from 4th to 8th in the second part of the TT, but can be satisfied with the 8th place, 1'09 behind Nibali.
All eyes are fixed at the favourite to win this Giro. Can Andy Schleck minimizes his loss to Nibali? The climbing half was good, only '7 behind. But just as all his team mates he has some difficulties with the descend, finding a good rhythm. He finishes in 42'18, and sets the 4th time behind Nibali, Antón and Brajkovic.
Next one is the Italian TT-champion Michele Scarponi. He rides a good ITT, 7th at 1'02.
Damiano Cunego is the last of the GC-contenders to start . His 2nd half is the better than the first and he finishes in 5th time, tied to Schleck.
The last to start is the wearer of the maglia rosa, Ángel Madrazo. The Movistar-rider needs a time of 43'18 to stay in pink, but the clock stops at 43'23. So Vincenzo Nibali takes the lead in stage 2.

Today´s winner
Word from the DS
After today, we know which rider is in shape and which isn´t. For sure, Vincenzo Nibali seems to be the biggest opponent of Andy Schleck, but also Antón, Cunego, Rodríguez and Evans look pretty strong. We are happy with the result of Andy, but for sure need to work on the team´s downhill abilities!
