Normally Arroyo goes into several attacks and gains time in the mountains that way, if I remember correctly.
I don't think he is among the 10-15 strongest climbers in the Giro this year, nor the years where he has done well... He is very consistent though and that could be a good thing this time.
He will definitely be in top 5, unless he goes total blank in a stage losing 15 minutes. You are right, Arroyo was not part of the best 10 favorites in the terminillio stage.
But damn, giving him such a bonus is kinda stupid. Even more stupid is letting Sastre back in, that guy is a diesel and slowly comes into form
And I'm not even talking about Tondo, who was one of the best in the Terminillio stage.
Good job Astana/BMC/LeakyGas, good job.
Or does liquigas seriously think Kiserlovski or Agnoli can win the Giro.
Epic failure!

Today 41 riders passed the finish line outside the time limit. Luckily for them the jury will allow them to start tomorrow. though they will lose 25 points in the points classification.
Including Tyler Farrar - he's now only 7 points ahead of Evans in the Points standings. |

well.. i kind of fancy Kiserlovksis chances, but i agree with Ruben, the favorites really took a gamble by letting Sastre back in the game today! |

Weirdest stage i ever seen, including the pereiro stage. I'm rooting and hoping for Sastre now. |

i really don't understand why are you underestimating porte, on the 8. stage (only real mountain stage so far) he was in front of arroyo, kiserlovski also has a good chance, if they don't force him to work for basso and nibali, tondo also for sastre! To finish with my thoughts i thinks this will be the battle of number 1 in their teams (porte and arroyo) which porte will win and earn his place in the tour de france! |

Because Porte is a neopro, he's never been in stage races longer a week, and the hardest mountain stages are still to come.

We have no idea how good/bad Porte is, but all logic says that he shouldn't be able to hang on to his jersey all the way to Milano.
And even if he wins, I can assure you that he's not going to the Tour |

X2... And Porte didn't seem all that strong on that stage. The stage was ridden perfectly for him, until the end. We can expect fireworks from now on, and I really doubt that it will favor his style of riding up the mountains.

Edvald Boasson Hagen didn't do to bad on the first mountain stage last year, so the first mountain stage isn't a good way to judge a riders ability to climb although the one this year was tougher than the first mountain stage last year.
Younger riders also have a tendency to do really well the first week, but then tire out quickly and loose a lot of time the last week.

And in all previous stages I've seen (excluding the mountain stage) Porte has been led over the line by a team mate who's looked after him like an eagle. Mountain time comes around, he'll have to fend for himself against the big boys.
Also, may I just do this:
Petrov won!!!
(ya boo, I know I'm a hypocrite)

What do people think about Tondo?
He's never done a GT before so I can see him fading, but Sastre hasn't looked great so far, so do you reckon he will be given freedom?

Liquigas claim they didn't know about who was in the break and the size until it had an 8 minute gap.
Robert Amadio (Liquigas manager) blames Vino in a scathing attack
"I think the Astana team should be ashamed of how they behaved. They didn't honour the pink jersey," Amadio said.

Liquigas had riders in the break. Surely those riders have eyes?

I think Liquigas are taking a bit of flak from the Italian press, and want to shift the blame

Looking on the bright side, when we finally hit the mountains proper, there could be some epic stages. |

Has a neo-pro ever won a GT before? I really don't think Porte will maintain his lead, but does anyone know what the best neo-pro result in a GT GC is?
I'm thinking Kiserlovski can do better than he did in the first mountain stage, after all he was a helper then. It just depends on whether Liquigas actually believes there's a chance, or if they want to be safe and go for Nibali or Basso.
I think if they decide to help out Kiserlovski instead Nibali and Basso wouldn't be too happy with it, so this could possibly lead to an internal conflict? |
