Unlucky losing out to Rojas on the last centimetres! Nicely done to take both the KoM and Youth jersey though. |

Our first race in May is the Rund um den Finanzplatz (Eschborn-Frankfurt). The race is traditionnaly on the 1st of May, the Tag der Arbeid (a German feast day) and organized since 1962.
Most often, a sprinter with good climbing abilities wins this race, but not always. Last year, the win was for Saxo's Chris Anker Sorensen, not the best sprinter there is.

Our team
The race
What to expect for us in a race with 5 young riders, and a German sprinter? Not too much help for the sprinter!
Maxim Lefevre gets his chance to be in a breakaway and he does a great job. He is succeding in it, and is in the BOTD together with Matej Mugerli (Glud), Dominic Klemme (Thüringer), Slawomir Kohut (Pisanellastoria) and Ravis Belohvosciks (Vorarlberg). They get a maximum lead of 5'30 but get caught after the last climb.
The question is if Marcel Kittel can survive the climbs and be in the first group entering Frankfurt to sprint for the win. He almost does, but loses contact shortly before the last summit. With 20km to go, he is one minute behind the first group, consisting of 26 riders. Only rider from our team in that group is Tom Dumoulin. But Kittel is that determined to win this race, he closes the gap of one minute to the leading group all on his own and joins them with 3km to go. But he wasted his energy with this attempt, and could not sprint for the win anymore.
The race ended in a surprise 1-2 win for Pisanellastoria (the former Miche-team), with the win for Andrea Tonti and the 2nd place for Maurizio Biondo. Kittel got 9th, Dumoulin 11th.

The winner
Word from the DS
Not the result we want, but what to expect with this young team? I think especially Lefevre and Lootens did a great job, also Dumoulin. And Kittel's chase to get back in the leading group was impressive.

Brave riding by Kittel to catch the leading group, pity he didn't have the energy for the sprint finish |

+1, hope he can do better in his next race... 9th is still a good result, but not the result that you expected...

The 95th edition of the Giro d'Italia is about to start. This is the first of two previews. I'll give you a preview of the route and the stages. Next preview (coming Saturday) features the riders and the favourites.
In the previous 94 editions, the Giro was won 66 times by an Italian rider. Two Italians (Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi) and one Belgian rider (Eddy Merckx) share the record wins, with 5 each. The rider with the most stage wins is Il Re Leone: sprinter Mario Cipollini won 42 stages, one more than Alfredo Binda.
2011
The 2011-edition was very succesful for the new Monster Energy - Ford team. Their (our ) leader Robert Gesink took the lead in the GC early in the Giro and managed to keep it the rest of the Giro, even winning two stages. With it, the young Dutch rider claimed his first GT-win, later that year followed by the 2nd winning the Vuelta a Espana as well. But the fight for the other 2 podium places was a thriller between the 2 best climbers of the Giro, namely José Rujano and Alberto Contador. Rujano finished in 2nd with just a few seconds ahead of Pistolero. The negative aspect in 2011 was the achievement of the Italian riders. There were no Italians in the top 10, to the frustration of the Tifosi!
The route
The new tour directors Michele Acquarone and Mauro Vegni surprised with a route designed by young marco08, who has designed an entertaining and varied route with a mountain ITT, a TTT & ITT, lots of unkown and undiscovered climbs and the final finish at the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio .
Stage 1-4
The Giro kicks off with 4 stages on the isle of Sicily. The first stage is a hilly one from Palermo to Castellammare del Golfo. The GC-contenders have to be careful not to loose time. The same for stage 2, a Mountain Time Trial around Trapani with the ascend and descend of the Erice. The 3rd stage from Marsala to Gela should be for the sprinters, but stage 4 is for the GC-contenders again. It is the longest stage from this Giro, 256 kilometres from Gela to Messina includes the Poertella Mandrazzi and shortly before the finish the Portella San Rizzo.
Stage 5 and 6
The next two stages, back on the mainland of Italy, should bring the sprinters another change. Stage 5 from Villa San Giovanni to Amantea is hilly in the first half, but completely flat in the 2nd part, whereas stage 6 (from Amanta to Sapri) is the more difficult one, with some climbing in the last part.
Stage 7-9
After 2 easy days for the GC-contenders, they'll face some tough days in the next 3 stages. In stage 7 we see the first mountain top finish at the Rifugio Calvanico, in the region of Campania. The next day is classified as hilly, with 2 climbs shortly before the finish in Isernia. Stage 9 features another mtf with the San Giacomo / Monte Piselli (alt. 1676m).
Stage 10-12
We have reached the heart of Italy, in the provinces of Pescara, Marche and Umbria. Stage 10 is a 28km team time trial from Montesilvano to Pescara. The next stage is a stage the people know from many Tirreno - Adriaticos. The route between Pescara and Montelupone is hilly again and features a steep final climb, designed for the puncheurs. Then stage 13 is in the mountains again, with 4 KOTM-sprints and the Monte Pennino shortly before the finish in Nocera Umbra.
Stage 13-15
Next follow 3 stages in Emilia Romagna and Tuscany. First a stage for the sprinters from Gualdo Tadino to Forli. Also stage 14 from Forli to Pistoia could be for the sprinters, if they can hang on to the peloton on the climbs early in the stage. Stage 15 is for the climbers again, with 3 tough climbs (Passo di Croce Arcana, the Abetone and the Monte Cimone) in the last part, including the finish at the summit of the Monte Cimone (alt. 1865m).
Stage 16 & 17
We enter the Alps in stage 16 and 17, including two mountain top finishes. First stage 16, from Torino to the summit of the Colle del Nivolet (alt. 2520m) and one day after from Cuorgne to the summit of the Cervinia (alt. 2006m). The GC can be shaken up in these monstruous climbs.
Stage 18 & 19
Two relatively easy stages in the Alps. Stage 18 is from Saint Vincent to Verbania and features a few climbs in which the GC-contenders have to be very careful not to lose time. The same for stage 19 from Verbania to Menaggio.
Stage 20
But all will be decided in stage 20, with 5 summits over 2000m above sea level in 183 kilometres. First the Forcela di Livigno, the Passo d'Eira and the Passo del Foscagna shortly after each other. Then the Passo dell'Umbrail (alt. 2501m) with the summit 58 kilometres before the finish. The stage ends at the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio, with an altitude of 2758 metres the highest finish in a GT ever!
Stage 21
But after stage 20, the GC isn't decided as the last stage is a flat 26.5km ITT from Monza to Milano. This stage will decide who will be the successor of Robert Gesink at the Piazza del Duomo.

Very hard Giro in perspective... hope you can take the win again. You're taking Andy this year, if I remember? |
