Freire have had his best time. He didnt win any race of significant importance. It still is the best chaos sprinter. But sprinting have changed since the coming of trains. Or TGV if you are according to Cavtrain. I hop he will do great with Katusha but i fear the worse.
Sprint trains have been around since Van Looy's Red Guard in the 1950s, and modern sprint trains have been around since Jean Paul Van Poppel's Superconfex squad of the 1980s.
Freire was a fantastic sprinter, with or without organized sprint trains. He's past his time, but he's not as bad as his results this season showed. He was recovering from surgery most of the time. Just last year he won San Remo and Paris-Tours.
He'll have a good last season before retiring (or deciding to continue again)
You understood me wrong i am afraid. I mean sprinters who can only sprint with trains in front of them. Freire never needed anyone else than Flecha in his great days. And not for the last 3 km he was all alone and keeping his spot.
I am a great admirer of Freire. I think I am being too much nostalgic. Because i want a Freire who is winning 3 WC and winning lots of GC stages and MSR. To that Freire have had his time. I am very happy that he was with Rabobank for a long time. Wish him all the best and hope there will be some day that good of a pure sprinter again. But i am afraid we have had those times.
Always keep this race in mind. What a terrific sprint for Oscarito. https://www.youtub...t5eVP3S9-M

Riis never ceases to amaze me. Saxo Bank has signed the 33-year-old Japanese Takashi Miyazawa (rode for Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli in 2011). |

McEwen does perfectly well without trains.

Actually, it's been known for two weeks
At least that's how long ago me and Waghlon were discussing it over messenger
EDIT: Anyway, the news back then was that one of the sponsors demanded a japanese rider on the team

Dominic Klemme signs with Project IT4i.
And Riis says that he's done with transfers.

Cippolini is one of the biggest examples. But you got also Boonen, petacchi, Greipel and even Cavendish some sort of way. With train he is unbeatable and if the train is not on the track he is beatable like Greipel did in the Tour of this year. Freire never needed one that makes him a pure sprinter. |

I always thought that 'pure sprinter' was the term used for guys like Cavendish, that is, for guys who can win only in bunch sprints, while guys like Freire are more versatile riders.
Anyway, none of the guys you have listed win only with sprint trains, and all of them have showed this quite a few times, even Cavendish.

I don't like how much Cavendish in particular is criticised because of the Columbia sprint train. Perhaps he would struggle with his positioning without a decent train, but surely has he not proven himself to have one of the / the most fast & powerful finishes around...? It's not his fault either that he has had the fortune of such a great team.
Edit: for fear of straying off topic, Vladimir Karpets and his mullet have made their way back accross to Movistar for next season. Bruseghin also renews.

Not really. I guess he's just out of money. |
