If you thought that the Giro is over, then think again! We still have this very, very hard final day of racing, finishing with a mountainous circuit in Brescia. The big, incredibly steep Monte Maddalena will be climbed five times, and with 10% in average gradient, we should see some big attacks.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_01.jpg

A few really strong names joined the day's breakaway. Quite a big group as well, with around fifteen riders in the beginning. That number soon shrank.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_02.jpg

The leading group stretched out a large advantage, leading the main field by ten minutes at one point. That also soon changed however, when UniCredit and Lampre started to send up their domestiques to shut down the break.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_03.jpg

Onto the last lap, Rob Ruijgh and José Rujano ditched the other members of the breakaway on the small Mompiano climb. Interestingly, they still led the main field by over four minutes!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_04.jpg

We got caught off guard when Cunego decided to make his move already on the Mompiano. Nibali and Sivtsov were onto this immediately.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_05.jpg

Cunego broke Nibali quite easily, but Sivtsov still seemed very strong. Van den Broeck tried his best to make his way back behind.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_06.jpg

Cunego didn't want to drag Sivtsov with him over the top, so he slowed down to wait for the others. Nibali then profited from the tricky descent to open up a small gap on the others.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_07.jpg

Down on the flat part between the two climbs, his advantage had grown to just over half a minute, with Cunego leading the chase.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_08.jpg

On the incredibly steep slopes of Monte Maddalena, Van den Broeck battled his way back to the group with Cunego. Unfortunately he didn't have a good day at all (-2), struggling to keep up.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_09.jpg

The GC battle behind was the end for the escapees. Ruijgh had dropped Rujano up front, but was just a minute ahead of the favourites.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_10.jpg

Nibali was brought back into the favourite group, but Cunego jumped instead, just as they made the catch. Van den Broeck was still fighting behind, desperately trying to stay with the others.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_11.jpg

Nibali couldn't allow Cunego to go by himself, so he was off in pursuit soon. Sivtsov and Scarponi jumped along.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_12.jpg

But Cunego continued to increase his advantage, shutting down the breakaway for good by catching up with Ruijgh.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_13.jpg

Van den Broeck's battle behind continued, but it looked darker and darker for every moment. He just couldn't follow the top names anymore!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_14.jpg

The three musketeers also continued to battle, a little bit behind Cunego. This time it was Sivtsov's turn to jump.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_15.jpg

Nibali used that move as a springboard for a last one of his own. With a kilometer to the top of the climb, he gave it all in one last try to win the Giro.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_16.jpg

But Cunego was relentless at the front, hammering on all the way to the top, knowing that he could be winning this Giro right here, right now.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_17.jpg

Nibali ran out of fuel after his attack and was caught by Sivtsov and Scarponi again. They passed the top over a minute behind Cunego however. Van den Broeck followed in the next group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_18.jpg

Knowing his skill in the tricky descents, Nibali tailed off his two companions quickly, setting off after Cunego.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_19.jpg

The little prince was already too far ahead however! Hitting the Flamme Rouge, he still led his compatriot by over a minute! He's back!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_20.png

The final kilometer was one of celebration for Damiano Cunego. Knowing that his gap was more than enough to defend his title, he enjoyed every moment. What a comeback in the last week, winning three straight stages!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_21.jpg

Sivtsov dumped Scarponi once they came down to the flat finish, but couldn't make his way back up to Nibali, who finished second today, and for the second year in a row, is the runner-up overall.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_22.jpg

Scarponi completely blew up after being dropped by Sivtsov, and even got passed by Pellizotti in the finale.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_21_23.jpg

And then, our own hero, Van den Broeck. His bad daily form totally drained his energy on the climbs, and therefore lost big time today. He drops to third overall, of course a bit disappointing, but it's way more than we dreamed of before the start!

With the strength he showed over the last three days, there's no doubt that Cunego is a very deserving winner. While the other favourites "wasted" a lot of energy earlier in the race, he was smart enough to save it.

As a little bit of consolation for missing out on the overall victory for the second consecutive year, Nibali at least wins the points classification, due to his consistency throughout the whole race.

Points:

1Vincenzo NibaliUniCredit - Bianchi Cycling Team243

10Franco PellizottiTeam Radioshack - Nissan73

Not just the points jersey for Nibali either, as he also wins the King of the Mountains classification. Worth noting however, is the fact that just three long breakaways succeeded, two in simulation.

By far the most dominant winner of a jersey was Betancur in the white best young riders' one. He proved to be one of the very best climbers in the whole race, and only his low stamina prevented him from challenging the Top 5.

Lastly, Liquigas also takes the team classification, after proving stronger than the UniCredit squad over three weeks. Scarponi, Basso and Betancur all finished in the Top 11 overall, showing the squad's strength.

Vdb wasn't good enough in the last stage, and Cunego was a beast in the last stages, making it very hard to push. Last stage, the -2 daily form ruin everything.

Batista15
Bad luck with the last stage but anyway your performance was just incredible! Keep it going like this.

fcancellara
Unfortunate, but still a nice podium spot!

A podium in a GT is still very good Grin Cunego was just too fresh in the last stages

What a pity. Van den Broeck was not in a good day, althoug he finished in the podium. Nice Giro. Wink

Pity you lost the overall win... still, it has to be said it was a great race. Wink

Thanks everyone. Needless to say, I'm not disappointed with the result! Smile

Vdb, after the nice Giro, is leading the Rankings and It4i are fighting for the UCI Title.

baia
Damn...loose the Giro in last stage...Sad but VDB gave one hell of a fight...at the end he still managed to finish in 3rd Overall...well done.Wink

too bad you lost the jersey in the last stage but it was a great giro against those opponents anyways Wink

MitchNL
A pity you lost 1st and 2nd in the last stage, but 3rd in the Giro is a great result! VDB leading WT is also positive news, shows how good you are doing.

Mentioned it already a page / 2 pages ago: Are you going to change to Argos-Shimano in mid-season or after 2012?

I will follow were ever you go... :-)
Go Team Saxobank!!

A podium for 1t4i is great, but I'm sure that you're disappointed given that you wore the leaders jersey right to the last day. That said, it shows what van den Broeck is capable of!

roturn
A pity that you lost the lead on the final stage. Tough one.
Still a nice Giro.
