Turns out the distance and time I used weren't the best.
Here's the wattages from official sources:
Menchov and Basso and co. were at 425watts, not 415.
So, it's still cleaner, but not by as much.
I don't think 425watts is to bad considering the length of the stage and the fact they only had one real climb, compared to some of the other wattage values you've said which were on long alpine stages. Its still higher than i would have expected though

Anyway, his teammate Scarponi is in the break. Not only that, but he's the only guy in the break who isn't several dozen minutes down on GC.
He's at 6:19
The break:
Michele Scarponi (Serramenti PVC)
Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R)
Vasil Kiryienka (Caisse D’Epargne)
Oscar Gatto (ISD)
Kasper Klostergaard (Saxo Bank)
If this break makes it, expect Scarponi to win. And possibly take the jersey.
I expect Klostergård to win, he has all of sudden learned to climb well ON the serius side That is a decently strong break, Where Scarponi and Kiriyenka are strong climbers, and Kloastergård being very strong on the flat. Gatto and Bonnafond I don't know much off, but when the bigger climbs come today I don't expect much from them.

If that group reaches the finish together, I don't see how Gatto can avoid winning |

Btw about yesterday: Menchov said the pace of Basso was not really hard and he had to contain himself, saying waisting energy in these stages would hunt him down in the 3rd week, and explaining that was why he had so much left in the sprint.
Leipheimer said the pace of basso was not that hard, but 'comfortable', and also said he was saving energy for later this Giro.
Then Lövkvist said he had to go deep in his reserves and was completely at and even over his limit.
So for now, I am still convinced Lövkvist will lose time, if he can hold on till the 3rd week, then he'll lose time at Petrano for sure. |

Gatto has been actualy "great"..but he is still one of the biggest black number candidate again. |

Basso was saying..this stage was to short..if they had 2 descent climbs..this speed would have starting to hurt...and this was fast enough do drop like 100 guys. |

Add that Basso, Sastre, and to an extent even Leipheimer, tend to suck in early mountain stages of a Grand Tour.

Indeed, and it was a relatively easy stage before the final climb as well. The fact that Ten Dam and co could return says a lot about the pace as well. No offence to Rogers, Ten Dam and co, but ..well. no.

Leipheimer's strength is being consistent and making up chunks of time in the TT...all he really has to do is stay with the top climbers and not lose large amounts of time at the finish and I think he will have a great chance to win...Basso and Menchov are the only real rivals at this point it would seem, as Sastre seems to be here just for form or so everyone says.
Correction: Rogers could be a surprise as well, hopefully he has come back to top form.

I got flamed for saying this last summer, so now that we have seen him again, I'll repeat it:
Why is Augustyn so highly regarded? He was in ONE breakaway at last year's tour and got dropped by Dessel and others...
Now it's 2009, this race is his big goal for the season and he finished in a group with Lars Bak.
Also, a note for Joaquim RodrÃguez: PATHETIC

Augustyn was first over that high mountain I've forgot that name of, but he crashed on the downhill.

As is typical of Di Luca, he's burning his team to keep a jersey at the worst possible moment.
So stupid, yet so tremendously normal for him.
The question now is, will anyone lend a hand and actually try to catch the break, or will the break simply be kept at close enough to not take the jersey?

He was dropped on the climb, but managed to come back when they slowed down. Then he crashed on the downhill.
The guys on that break were hardly world beating climbers. Augustyn is overrated

I read an article earlier today where Di Luca said that he'd try to defend the jersey until the time trial. |

yeaah..this was answer..he is trying to keep that jersey has long has possible. GT win hunter should be cool at this stage of the tour..
We all have seen what can happens with strong team like Caisse with one TdF week..and LPR does not have such capacity. |

Actually, Di Luca seems to ride much better time trials with the Maglia Rosa.

The jersey gives most people wings. Look at Lövkvist. Look at Contador and Visconti last year.
