Jesleyh - I was extremely surprised by that time trial myself!
Atlantius - Thanks
sutty68 - Could be! Of course, the Giro or the Vuelta would open other and equally interesting opportunities!
Daggen - That's a deal
Ollfardh - I feel they've really grown a lot here in the Tour, both of them!
dienblad - Thanks! We've done our best and I'm quite glad about the result!
cunego59 - They sure had! And that's something every rider has to deal with those in their careers, so they've learned the hard way here! They kicked back all right, though, I think
Thanks for the massive support, everyone! |

The Tour Reviewed Part III - Stijn Van Gent & Willy Wouters
Welcome to this second edition of The Toru Reviewed. Yesterday we had guests Jurgen Van den Broeck and Thomas De Gendt. Today we welcome team mates Stijn Van Gent and Willy Wouters. Respectively 23 and 22 years old, the two young Flemish riders have made an impressive debut in the most beautiful race of the year: the Tour de France.
Welcome, Stijn and Willy. you two seem inseparable. I remember doing an interview with the both of you last year. Here you are again, the both of you. Still best friends?
Van Gent: I think a friendship like this is unusual in this milieu. But it works perfectly for us. You see, we are exact opposite riders, so there's almost no competitiveness between the both of us. I think that's the success of our friendship. We complete each other, racing-wise. The only exception maybe is Milano - San Remo.
Let's talk about the Tour. Willy, you are called the biggest revelation of the Tour, how does it feel to return a, allow me to use this word, celebrity?
Wouters: I hardly feel like that, though. I think I've proven myself already, and I've worked hard all year. This Tour was all about that hard work paying off, mixed with a bit of luck.
Not many people would call beating Martin in a time trial luck...
Wouters: No, but a time trial after 20 stages is always a gamble. I had a good day. Of course I'm not trying that false modesty, I do deserve that 10th place in the end.
Was there a moment you were dreaming about more?
Wouters: No, top 20 was my goal. Like I said, I caught some breaks during the Tour and I tried keeping my head clear.
Van Gent: Willy never floats, he made that mistake once and I don't think he'll do it again, after the previous Dauphiné.
So what do you have in store for us for 2014? A top 5, a podium? Where does it end?
Wouters: I'm real careful about things like that. I don't want to be that rider that only cares about the Tour. There are so many beautiful races, so I'm not sure I'll return here next year. I don't want to sound cocky but the Tour is not everything in cycling. I finished 10th in the Tour, but my season isn't over yet, I still have some races and I'm going to stay focused now!
Stijn, describe your Tour.
Van Gent: Well, I think my Tour was mostly about growth. I entered the Tour as a nervous, young classic rider. Uncertain at times and without too many expectations. I mixed in some sprints, had some major downs in the mountains...
Wouters: I saw him evolving from day to day, literally. He's developed some quality that few riders have, I see it in him. Boonen has it, Cancellara has it. I have no doubts Stijn will be the "leader" of the peloton one day.
You both enjoyed a stage win. Which one was more beautiful?
Van Gent: (laughs) Well, my finish photo has Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish sprinting like crazy behind me. I don't think it gets better than that!
Wouters: Like we said before, we both got a different thing going.
Stijn, at the start you seemed on a lucky streak, but in the end you proved the analysts wrong. You are, in fact, a mass sprinter. Is that right?
Van Gent: I have worked a lot on my sprint. But I'm nowhere near the top speed of someone like Cavendish. I can get a good sprint on tough stages, a bit uphill, strong winds, rain...
Finally, what race would you love to win, you're absolute favorite race?
Van Gent: A question like that is bound to have more than one answer. I guess The World Championships, De Ronde, Roubaix, and perhaps the Green Jersey.
Wouters: It may sounds strange, but I think every race is worth winning. I just want to squeeze everything out of my career that I possibly can. If a Grand Tour is in it, we'll have to see!
Thanks, and good luck! |

Now they separate for a moment, unfortunately.
Stijn will start in the Eneco Tour, where he managed to grab his first WT win last season, and then on to the one day races like Plouay, Hamburg, Paris - Bruxelles, finishing in the Tour of Britain.
Willy will start in the Tour of Colorado and then move north for the two Canadian Classics! And then potentially the Worlds |

Eneco Tour - Prologue
And we're back in business after a nice recuperation camp. The Eneco Tour is an important event in my season, since I have a podium place to protect here! Biggest favorite is last year winner Fabian Cancellara.
I raced a fairly decent prologue, carrying some form from the Tour. Last year I had a brilliant Eneco Tour. This year I hope to finish on the podium, like last year. It's ambitious, but I can do it. Degenkolb is here mainly to build form for the Vuelta. He will sprint when he can, but I have a leading role so I can go my own way in the sprint with a helper of two of myself.

Eneco Tour - Stage 2
Welcome here!
A very tough finish with some uphill road. With Peter Sagan here, we already know today's winner.
Degenkolb is here to build form and nestled himself in my wheel: "I'll see how far I go", he said. I was to sprint my own sprint and he would see about his current shape.
The road to the sprint was a bit nervous and Gretsch took a nasty fall.
Of course, Sagan was faster than the wind. I've been a bit ill after the Tour and it seems I lack the stamina needed. However, I have a decent sprint and barely hold off Boonen.
[img][/img]
Pretty good day. Degenkolb will be fine in a couple of days. That Vuelta will be his for the taking. I'm still all right, seem to have recovered well.

Eneco Tour - Stage 3
This morning, John (Degenkolb) and myself made an agreement. Tomorrow is the cobbled stage, so very important for the GC. So that stage will decide "leadership" for the remaining 3 sprinting stages after. So our deal is: he will take today and tomorrow to build some shape. After tomorrow's stage, we will review where I stand on the GC. If I'm good, I will claim leadership. If I don't do well tomorrow, I will put myself to his use for the remaining stages, leading him out.
It was Liquigas versus Team Sky for the sprint. I chose the Liquigas train!
That was a mistake. They got drummed away by Sky. With tomorrow's stage in my head, I didn't feel like taking any risks, so I took it easy and finished 7th. Going kamikaze, I could've finished on the podium, top 5, maybe, but this isn't the Tour. I somehow managed to avoid all falling in the Tour, I won't tempt fate here!
Cavendish puts all things back in order: sprint king.

We'll see you tomorrow, for the main stage. The stage where I got my first WT victory, by the way! If you remember, I rode away with Roelandts and he had to let me go on the flat. I just outlasted a chasing Cancellara!
