pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png Stage 19 - Selva di Val Gardena > Livigno pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19.png

Second consecutive mountain stage today, climbing the Stelvio, the Foscagno and the Eira before descending down the short descent to finish in the ski resort of Livigno. Most favourites should be waiting for tomorrow.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_01.jpg

If the breakaway had a slight chance of succeeding today, that completely disappeared once we hit the bottom of the Stelvio. To be more precise, it was mountains jersey wearer Chris Anker Sörensen who launched an attack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_02.jpg

Just as suspected, the Dane made his way up to the front of the race after just a couple of kilometers. He also increased the advantage over the main field with every ridden meter.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_03.jpg

After a little while, when we got closer to the top of the Stelvio, UniCredit increased the speed in the peloton a little bit by sending up a few domestiques. As usual Sky joined them in the work.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_04.jpg

Sörensen made his way to the top of this Giro all solo after dropping the breakaway members quickly. About six minutes of advantage for him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_05.jpg

The main field went faster and faster with every minute, and when we eventually reached the Foscagno Pass, Sky tried with every ounce of power in the squad to make life hard for Van den Broeck. Lagutin fell back quite early.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_06.jpg

We didn't see any real attacks in the first kilometers of the climb. It was just Pellizotti who tried a few punches, eventually finding out that he wouldn't get away. UniCredit still hammering on at the front.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_07.jpg

Most interesting thing that happened here was that GC's seventh, Kessiakoff, began to struggle very early today, dropping off the back together with among others Lagutin. Not good at all for the Swede.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_08.jpg

With just a kilometer or so to the top, Cunego finally broke the ice with an attack. Sivtsov, Nibali, Scarponi and Anton were all on it immediately, while Van den Broeck stayed calm.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_09.jpg

Sörensen was caught by the super strong Cunego just as he crossed over the top of the Foscagno. Sivtsov not far behind.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_10.jpg

But Cunego really made the best he could out of the small gap he got and actually pulled it out to half a minute in the twisty beginning of the descent. Sörensen managed to stay with him, surprisingly.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_11.jpg

After cleverly saving his energy on the last climb, Van den Broeck made his way back to Sivtsov and Nibali just as we started the two and a half kilometer climb to Passo di Eira. Cunego and Sörensen still ahead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_12.jpg

Nibali and Sivtsov apparently still had pretty much left in the tank, as they kicked again just moments later. This time Van den Broeck was forced to go after them by himself, and did so!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_13.jpg

A group of six formed at the front of the race at the very top of Eira. Cunego led Sörensen, Nibali, Sivtsov, Van den Broeck and Scarponi over the top, a minute clear of the rest.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_14.jpg

After some tricky turns, Cunego tried to catch the others off guard with an early acceleration, just ahead of the Flamme Rouge. Van den Broeck and Nibali reacted, but the others lost a few meters.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_15.png

The little prince managed to perserve the few meters his acceleration got him, to hold off Nibali and Van den Broeck for the stage win. Sivtsov, Scarponi and Sörensen lost a couple of seconds in the end.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_19_16.jpg

Pellizotti won the sprint for seventh, leading a bigger group of favourites home a minute later. Biggest loser today was Kessiakoff, who lost another two minutes on this group, losing ground overall.

I'll do my best! I'm surprised myself that he has been this strong! Smile

Yeah, it was an "easy" mountain stage.

baia wrote:

It was indeed a hard decision. I think I did the most clever thing however.

Thanks! The queen stage will come up tomorrow, and I since I've already played it, I can tell you that it was one of the most epic stages I've ever played!

But no more hints than that! Stay tuned until tomorrow! Wink

pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png Stage 20 - Sondrio > Monte Colmo pcmdaily.com/images/flags/IT.png

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_20.png

We've at last arrived at the queen stage of this race. In addition to the Gavia and the Mortirolo, the day also includes two new climbs, the incredibly steep Monte Padrio and the final climb of Monte Colmo, averaging 8%.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_01.jpg

The day's early breakaway was at first pretty big, but the Gavia made sure to change that. At the top the group was already reduced to half the original size!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_02.jpg

On the very slender slopes of Monte Padrio, Wilco Kelderman continued to reduce the size of the group, dropping his companions one by one.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_03.jpg

The main field reached the same climb a little while later, with very interesting things happening. The narrow roads in combination with catching the dropped former escapees created gaps everywhere. Van den Broec made sure to keep a very strong position.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_04.jpg

Meanwhile, Kelderman increased the pace in the leading group, shattering it to pieces. Stefan Denifl was the only one who could follow.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_05.jpg

The split situation then suddenly turned incredibly interesting, when a group of six started to pull clear of the rest. Nibali with two team mates, Scarponi with one, while Van den Broeck got isolated.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_06.jpg

Kelderman continued his rampage at the front, reaching the top of this absolutely brutal climb all by himself. Not much advantage left however.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_07.jpg

The pink jersey group also continued to push on hard all the way to the top, distancing the other favourites by more and more. No idea what happened to the mountain sprint.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_08.jpg

Chasing around a minute and a half behind Van den Broeck's group was another small group of 17, including the other Top 10 riders. Also here was Lagutin, who missed out due to blocking.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_09.jpg

Down on the flat, just before the right turn towards the Mortirolo, the UniCredit domestiques brought back Kelderman, turning this into the front group.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_10.jpg

Realizing the weakness of being isolated, Van den Broeck turned up the heat as soon as the steep sections arrived. Nibali was isolated too at once, while Scarponi's support lasted a little bit longer.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_11.jpg

It didn't take much longer until also Rujano and Basso had to let go of the group. Three men up front then, battling this out.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_12.jpg

A strong Van den Broeck, once again on a (+5), did most of the work up the climb, in order to prevent surprise attacks. This seemed to work very well, as the two Italians really suffered, visibly.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_13.jpg

Sivtsov led the chasers over the top, two minutes down on the front trio. Also in this group we found Cunego, Anton, Marzano, Basso, Rujano and Pellizotti.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_14.jpg

After charging up during the descent, Van den Broeck took over command once again when Monte Colmo began to show real gradient.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_15.jpg

Meanwhile, Cunego found himself with no other choice but to reel the leaders in by himself. Anton also seemed interested in this.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_16.jpg

Marzano also jumped off from the chasing group a few moments later, realizing that Sivtsov was clearly struggling to defend his podium spot.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_17.jpg

At the same time, Scarponi just collapsed after pushing himself too far into the red zone by trying to follow Van den Broeck's pace. A duo left at the front then, formed by the two strongest riders in the race.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_18.jpg

Or maybe not? An incredibly strong Cunego soon caught Scarponi. The two at the front weren't too far off either!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_19.jpg

A bit further down the climb, Sivtsov was off in a last desperate try to save his chances of finishing on the podium overall.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_20.jpg

But the man on fire currently was no doubt Cunego. Another couple of kilometers later, he had made it back up to Van den Broeck and Nibali, gaining two minutes on them on this climb.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_21.jpg

The rampage continued, and neither of the two former leaders could follow the Lampre man! Van den Broeck also a few meters behind Nibali!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_22.jpg

With lots of heart, courage and will, Van den Broeck found energy that didn't really exist in his body and managed to dig his way back up to Nibali.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_23.jpg

They entered the final kilometer together, with Nibali giving absolutely everything in a last try to unhitch the Belgian on his wheel!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_24.png

Cunego however, was now far ahead of those, comfortably celebrating an impressive stage win after an incredibly comeback! Back-to-back wins!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_25.jpg

Nibali couldn't tail off Van den Broeck, but at least got a few bonus seconds on him. That wasn't very interesting however, as they lost almost two minutes on Cunego! The prince is back in the game!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_26.jpg

Scarponi held off Anton for fourth place on the day, over three minutes off the winner's pace! No doubt that this was an extremely hard day.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/gdi_20_27.jpg

Sivtsov fought bravely all day, but eventually cracked while desperately trying to make his way back to the front. His sixth place here, more than five minutes behind Cunego throws him off the podium.

Indeed epic this battle. 3 riders within 30 seconds! Can't wait for the next one. (well actually I can't wait for Flanders to start, but this is a nice filler)

Great report and very interesting and nail biting final. But with tomorrow downhill and with AI of PCM that can't handle downhills I think you have this in the bag. I was the only one btw that said you were going to win, I think I deserve some special prize Pfft

Only joking Wink

Looking forward to the last stage and banana celebration Wink

Absolutely fantastic report! Must have taken forever to take all those screenshots! VDB atleast has the lead still, it would be a shame for him to lose it now!

Cunego was really in a good day. God, what a show of power. But VdB will win Giro. I'm sure of that now. Pfft

It's getting closer and closer...
And this is for sure (sorry for the others) the best Grand Tour report I've ever read on PCM Daily Grin
