A little too binary for me. |

True. With this kind of play, they will be knocked out whenever they meet a good team.
Yep. But I haven't seen a good team yet this tournament, save Germany. |

All i can say is screw the world cup. It was bad enough viewing already (considering most of us here watch these games at 2am) and then for the second game in a row the ref gives us some BS red card to our best player. And even worse, he was **cking Italian...........
I now remember why i switched from soccer to rugby a long time ago. At least when you lose in rugby its not because of revolting decisions.

Not a BS red card. If he gave a penalty, the rules say that he would have to give a red. |

Erm, Kewell should have been sent off no question. He clearly stopped a goalboand shot with his hand.
The rules need to change regarding the handball and fouls in the box. They give away a penelty and so surely a booking would have been better in that circumstance. But this really is a letter of the law situation a player who stops a goalboand shot on the line with his arm gets sent off.
Australia played really well though after that and showed real heart. They still have a chance, I can see Germany beating Ghana and then that sets up a Serbia vs Australia play off. |

If you stand still and the ball hits your body and your arm it is usually counted as accidental and play on. The ball was kicked at him too, he didn't reach out to it.
The call against Vidic yesterday was perfect. Yellow card penalty, and Kewell should get the same treatment even though he didn't reach out to the ball.
I am just so angry as any fan would be. We were dominating kind of like Germany yesterday if Klose didn't get carded. But this time it ended out world cup. |

He moved his arm towards the ball, therefore it was fully deserved. Can't blame the refs for this one. |

They played one good half against Korea. Germany has impressed me more, even though they lost against Serbia. |

Longs story short: Great player does not automatically equal great manager.
My guess is that as soon as Maradona meet a team that is somewhat close to his on paper, with a manager who can successfully tie his shoes and open his front door in the morning; Argentina is screwed, done, finito.
Their offense might look finger-lickingly good, but their defense seems a bit unstable, in particular they have a big weakness at the right back.
Anyway, many people seem to think that the WC is the absolutely highest form of football. I disagree, I think club football is. National teams tend to severely lack the same cohesion that club teams have. Underperforming national teams are the norm, not the exception.

Argentina has been good, although the Nigeria game wasn't great. Holland still has Arjen Robben who hasn't featured yet. He can provide the speed needed in offense which has been lacking. They are quite lucky that they didn't have a harder group. Swap them with Portugal, and they most probably wouldn't qualify for second round.
If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or Fight Like Hell.

Argentina defense = Samuel, Demichelis, Burdisso, Heinze.
Those are among the best fullbacks in the world, or maybe did watch this season in a wrong way.
You're saying Argentina has a weakness in their defense, just because you saw Jonás Gutiérrez being crap against Nigeria, and because of the goal against Korea.
But if Maradona is smart, and I think he is, he'll make Burdisso as right back, and if Samuel isn't injured for a long time (I don't if he's recovering or not), he'll be in the starting 11 in round of 16, and you'll discover Argentina is one of the best defense of this WC.
But I have to agree, Germany's the team who impressed me the most, because that's really fantastic to see a team with 10 players actually dominating (made me think of Lyon-Bayern first match)

That's right, but that's obvious : it's really normal to get on well with guys you see during the whole season, whereas in national teams, you meet players you don't see for months : that's why there are clans in national teams (not in every, but some like France, or Spain some years ago)
But everyone in football will reply you that WC games are way higher in terms of physical and mental commitment than any game of CL or any high-profiled match.

Good teams give up more space, and then they play better. Plus they'll going to (have to) replace VDV with a fast winger and that will help too. So far so good. Netherlands have a history of playing very well and still getting knocked out later with a bad game along the way. A slow start and still win is fine. Best football is yet to come. |
