that was really nice i like the personal touch of it
especially the top 5 ranking like you did last year is a very cool idea ( but to be honest i personally liked the vuelta more because of the importance of the race ) |

August 18, 2012
A Summary of the Cycling Year 2012:
Part One: Results and Rankings
Here you go with a summary of the most important results of the year:
Tour de France
1 | Alberto Contador | Movistar Team | 2 | Bradley Wiggins | Sky ProCycling | 3 | Samuel Sanchez | Euskaltel – Euskadi | . | Points | Tyler Farrar | Team Garmin – Cervélo | . | Mountain | Roman Kreuziger | Liquigas – Cannondale |
Giro d'Italia
1 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2 | Michele Scarponi | Lampre – ISD | 3 | Fabio Duarte | Geox – TMC | . | Points | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas - Cannondale | . | Mountain | Fabio Duarte | Geox – TMC |
Vuelta a Espana
1 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2 | Samuel Sanchez | Euskaltel – Euskadi | 3 | JoaquÃm Rodriguez | Katusha Team | . | Points | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | . | Mountain | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale |
Vincenzo Nibali is the outstanding GT rider of 2012, winning the Giro-Vuelta-Double. Contador's win in France was once again dominant, Samuel Sanchez benefited from Gesink's crash on the last stage to podium again.
Monuments and World Championships
Milano – San Remo
1 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas – Cannondale | 3 | Alexandr Kolobnev | Rabobank |
Ronde Van Vlaanderen
1 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard – Trek | 2 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 3 | Sylvain Chavanel | Leopard - Trek |
Paris – Roubaix
1 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 2 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard – Trek | 3 | Sylvain Chavanel | Leopard - Trek |
Liège – Bastogne – Liège
1 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas – Cannondale | 3 | JoaquÃm Rodriguez | Katusha Team |
Giro di Lombardia
1 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas – Cannondale | 3 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma - Lotto |
Just like Heinrich Haussler last year, Damiano Cunego managed to come in second in three of the five monuments. Tom Boonen achieved to win two of them, plus a second spot in Vlaanderen. No really big surprise here. The Liquigas double in the Lombardy will linger in the memory for a long time.
World Championships
1 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 3 | Alejandro Valverde | Unicef - Oracle |
World Championships ITT
1 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2 | Andreas Klöden | Team T-Mobile | 3 | Tony Martin | Team T-Mobile |
Peter Sagan surprised with the first double win in a world championship ever. In the time trial, the Germans were again only the runner-ups.
Tour Down Under | Franco Pellizotti (Katusha) | . | Paris – Nice | Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma) | . | Tirreno – Adriatico | Damiano Cunego (Liquigas) | . | Volta Ciclista a Catalunya | Iván Gutiérrez (Movistar) | . | Gent – Wevelgem | Dominique Rollin (FDJ) | . | Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco | Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel) | . | Amstel Gold Race | Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma) | . | Flèche Wallonne | Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma) | . | Tour de Romandie | Fabio Duarte (Geox) | . | Critérium du Dauphiné | Tony Martin (T-Mobile) | . | Tour de Suisse | Alberto Contador (Movistar) | . | Clasica San Sebastian | Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel) | . | Tour de Pologne | Igor Antón (Leopard) | . | Eneco Tour | Tony Martin (T-Mobile) | . | Vattenfall Cyclassics | Sylvain Chavanel (Leopard) | . | GP Ouest France | Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) | . | GP de Québec | Damiano Cunego (Liquigas) | . | GP de Montréal | Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) | . | Tour of Beijing | Peter Sagan (Liquigas) |
Philippe Gilbert outstands with a win at Paris - Nice and the Ardennes-Triple. The two most surprising wins happened in late March, when Ivan Gutierrez triumphed in Catalunya and Dominique Rollin outsmarted the established riders at Gent - Wevelgem.
Individuals
1 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas – Cannondale | 748 | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 709 | 3 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | 600 | 4 | Samuel Sanchez | Euskaltel – Euskadi | 541 | 5 | Igor Antón | Leopard – Trek | 504 | 6 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 449 | 7 | Joaquim Rodriguez | Katusha Team | 442 | 8 | Alberto Contador | Movistar Team | 425 | 9 | Fabio Duarte | Geox – TMC | 371 | 10 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas – Cannondale | 369 | … | 89 | Dominik Nerz | Liquigas – Cannondale | 44 |
With his wins at Tirreno-Adriatico and the GP de Québec and podium places at 7 (!!) more World Tour races, Damiano Cunego was the most constant rider and wins the ranking well-deserved. Liquigas is the only team that has more than one rider in the Top 10. Alberto Contador was a bit disappointing, except for the wins in the Tour de Suisse and of course the Tour de France, he didn't do anything. Youngster Dominik Nerz scored his first points.
Teams
1 | Liquigas – Cannondale | 1987 | 2 | Leopard – Trek | 1378 | 3 | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 1120 | 4 | Movistar Team | 1008 | 5 | Katusha Team | 979 | … | 16 | Pro Team Astana | 368 | 17 | Skil – Shimano | 336 | 18 | GreenEdge Cycling | 296 | 20 | FDJ | 212 |
Liquigas defends their lead from last year with a huge advance. We expected more from Katusha while Leopard fulfilled their role as Liquigas' biggest opponent. GreenEdge and FDJ are getting relegated.
Individuals
1 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas - Cannondale | 4176 | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas - Cannondale | 3163 | 3 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 2400 | 4 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas – Cannondale | 2396 | 5 | Samuel Sanchez | Euskaltel – Euskadi | 2308 | 6 | Alberto Contador | Movistar Team | 2271 | 7 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 1968 | 8 | Igor Antón | Leopard – Trek | 1876 | 9 | Joaquim Rodriguez | Katusha Team | 1737 | 10 | Fabio Duarte | Geox – TMC | 1617 | … | 36 | Dominik Nerz | Liquigas – Cannondale | 831 |
Only four points from Gilbert prevent Liquigas from taking a triple win here. Nibali wins the ranking easily with his Giro-Vuelta-Double. Dominik Nerz had his first successful season and finishes as the third best German, only behind Tony Martin and Andreas Klöden.
Teams
1 | Liquigas – Cannondale | 12764 | 2 | Leopard – Trek | 6325 | 3 | Movistar Team | 6296 | 4 | Katusha Team | 5897 | 5 | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 5191 | ... | 10 | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | 4513 | 15 | Geox - TMC | 3788 | 18 | Saur - Sojasun | 3321 | 21 | Colnago - CSF Inox | 2721 |
Not much to say here: Liquigas has more points than Leopard and Movistar added up! Pure domination. Cofidis easily promotes while Saur benefits from Geox' disbandment.
Individuals
1 | Damiano Cunego | Liquigas - Cannondale | 17 | 2 | José Joaquin Rojas | Movistar Team | 12 | 3 | Tom Boonen | QuickStep Cycling Team | 10 | 4 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma - Lotto | 10 | 5 | Peter Sagan | Liquigas - Cannondale | 10 |
Cunego doesn't reach Nibali's 22 wins from last year but again a Liquigas rider wins here. In general, the sprinters and quick puncheurs have the best chances for many wins.
Teams
1 | Liquigas - Cannondale | 53 | 2 | Team T-Mobile | 30 | 3 | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | 29 | 4 | Movistar Team | 29 | 5 | GreenEdge | 24 |
Liquigas has a large advance here as well. 24 wins couldn't prevent GreenEdge from relegation while Cofidis underlines their status as the best continental team, thus deserving the promotion.

Once again, thanks for all the great comments, fellas! It's fantastic to see that all the work is appreciated so much. I just wanted to let you know that I'm basically finished with the transfer editing (I re-arranged half of the team in some cases, so don't be surprised), so I only have to include the new jerseys, make the minijerseys and logos etc. Also, there are still two small review parts to write. But afterwards, we'll be ready for 2013!
By the way, I'm very happy with how the teams are shaped. Some great combinations, I hope you'll like it
