Very strong TT, a pity Sivtsov was faster...

Wow, this will be the real thriller in the next stages. Great work from Project and fantastic win with VdB, Nibali must be feeling the pressure now Smile
Oh and almost forgot to say that reports and screens were brilliant again...

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18.png

Three brutal days begins here, with one of the harder stages in the whole race. Four major climbs are on the menu, with the last three being first category ones. We'll see an exciting finish atop Passo Giau, with gaps.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_01.jpg

The winner of stage 12, Kevin De Weert, was the biggest name in the early breakaway. Along with twelve others, he built up a gap of around six minutes on the way towards the mountains.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_02.jpg

In a steep section of the day's second climb, José Rujano jumped off the front of the main field, dragging Rob Ruijgh along with him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_03.jpg

This forced De Weert to increase the pace in the breakaway in order to stay ahead of the two chasing climbers. Steve Morabito managed to hang onto his wheel for a little while, only to be dropped later.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_04.jpg

Rujano and Ruijgh climbed at a high pace, catching and dropping the members of the breakaway one by one. De Weert was the only one who stayed ahead over the top. Still two climbs to go.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_05.jpg

About halfway up the slopes of the penultimate climb, the duo linked up with the man in front to form a strong leading trio.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_06.jpg

Meanwhile, Marzano pulled off a strong attack from the reduced main field. Perhaps a tactic from Androni, having Rujano up the road.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_07.jpg

Marzano looked strong at first, but couldn't resist the strong UniCredit team. Anton was the next to pounce, followed by Cunego and race leader Nibali!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_08.jpg

Also that attack slowed down pretty fast, leaving an opportunity for Kessiakoff and Sörensen to jump instead, a kilometer from the top.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_09.jpg

The three at the front managed to stay clear over the top of the Staulanza, just a shade over a minute ahead of Kessiakoff and not much more over the other favourites.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_10.jpg

Just 18 riders stayed in the favourite group over last climb. Van den Broeck still felt great (+5), while Lagutin had to battle over the top, tired after a lot of protecting work on the climb.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_11.jpg

We shut down the three at the front just as Kessiakoff caught up with them, and also just as we began the final climb. Van den Broeck moved up on the right side of the road, keeping a strong position.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_12.jpg

It turned out even better than that. The escapees blocked the other favourites from moving past, allowing Van den Broeck to create a small gap. Sky quickly realized the danger, increasing the pace a lot.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_13.jpg

Anton didn't think the pace was enough however, pouncing off in his second attack of the day. Porte doing the pace for Sivtsov.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_14.jpg

Porte wasn't able to close down Van den Broeck, forcing Sivtsov to do the work all by himself. Nibali, Scarponi and Cunego didn't want to miss this party either.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_15.jpg

Sivtsov just couldn't make his way up to Van den Broeck either. Therefore Nibali decided to give it another shot, jumping around the Belarussian with Cunego not far behind.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_16.jpg

Cunego bided his time and then launched an attack of his own at the perfect time, just as the others slowed down.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_17.jpg

Possibly a mini-crisis for Nibali then, when Sivtsov kicked again, leaving the Italian in the dust behind him. No energy left?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_18.jpg

But no matter how many times the other favourites attacked, they just couldn't shut down that thirty second gap Van den Broeck gained at the bottom at the climb. Under the Flamme Rouge, the gap had started to grow.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_19.jpg

Cunego was still in pursuit behind, with Sivtsov following him in third place. Then Scarponi and Nibali, clearly losing ground.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_20.jpg

Surprisingly, the pink jersey found another gear in the steep final kilometer, dropping Scarponi on his way back up!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_21.png

By far too late to stop Van den Broeck from winning the stage though! The man in red triples up in stage wins in this race, and also distances his rivals. Let's not forget, by how much?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_22.jpg

Cunego held his second place all the way to the line, but still finished well over a minute behind the day's winner! Sivtsov only managed to pull back four seconds on Nibali in the end. But that didn't matter, as they were too late to keep Van den Broeck behind in GC!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_23.jpg

Anton and Marzano payed for their earlier tries on the final climb, losing over two and a half minute in the end. Still, they made this stage a lot more exciting with their early attacks, which is also important.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_24.jpg

Over three minutes off, Kessiakoff cut the line together with the green jersey of Sörensen. The gaps really opened up today!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/project/gdi_18_25.jpg

And lastly, just like many times before, Pellizotti was the worst of the Top 10 riders in GC. The Italian blew up big time today, finishing almost five minutes adrift of Van den Broeck.

Many riders missed the time limit today, including Van Emden, Kluge and Bagdonas. That means only Bozic left to collect bottles.

Verry nice
What's Svitsov Mountain stats?

Great report and an excellent result. Sometimes (not often) the blocking can be in your advantage, as it was now. But VdB was by far the strongest today, good luck in keeping the pink! Banana

Nice result by VDB, I'm convinced that you'll get the Italians and Sivtsov further on in the Giro.

@ MitchNL - Thanks! I'm not as sure as you are, but we'll see.

Are you as sure as me now? Wink

Back to business: excellent stage win, pink jersey, 2nd in Sprint and KoM Ranking, 5th in Team Ranking and just 3 stages left. GL for this last crucial bit!

EDIT: Are you going to change to Argos in mid-season or does 1t4i stay till the end of the season?
