The only Dutch World Tour race is the Amstel Gold Race. The race starts in Maastricht and after 257 kilometres with many narrow, cornery roads with 31 short steep climbs in it, the riders finish in Valkenburg, at the summit of the Cauberg.
The previous 46 editions saw 17 Dutch winners, 11 Belgian winners and 6 times a winner from Italy. The 6th one was last year, when Damiano Cunego was too fast for Joaquim Rodriguez and Philippe Gilbert in the uphill sprint.
Igor Antón (Euskaltel) is in great shape, taking two stage wins in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and the 3rd place in the GC. He is explosive enough to have a shot at the win.
Damiano Cunego (Lampre) won the race twice already, in '08 and '11 and is looking for a third one. He had no great results in the last few weeks, but never count him out.
Philippe Gilbert (Lotto) dominated Paris - Nice and is now looking for domination in the hilly classics. He's got all what it takes to do: fantastic hilly and punching skills.
Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha) is eager to become the first Spanish winner in the Amstel. He is in great form, with 3 stage wins in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.
Peter Sagan is the worst hilly rider of the 5, but the best sprinter. So if a group reaches the last climb together, he is one serious contender for the win, also looking at his great shape, winning the Giro dell'Appennino and the Brabantse Pijl last week.
Outsiders
Chris Horner (Lotto), Linus Gerdemann (Katusha), Alexandre Vinokourov & Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Robert Gesink & Jelle Vanendert, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin), Simon Gerrans (Qantas), Denis Menchov (Sony Ericsson), Alessandro Ballan (BMC), Dario Cataldo (Omega Pharma), Carlos Barredo (Rabobank), Jakob Fuglsang (Nissan) and Rigoberto Urán (Sky).
Our goal
Our sponsors want a top 10. Last year we got a 16th.... So we will be very happy with a top 10.
124km to go, Drielandenpunt
The weather conditions are beatiful in the province of Limburg, 15 degrees and a bright spring sun! This inspires 6 riders to go on an early adventure and together they form the BOTD. The names: Anthony Colby (Garmin), Yohann Gene (Europcar), Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank), Rene Mandri (Vacansoleil), Sergio Paulinho (Saxo Bank) and Mauricio Soler (Movistar). They've reached the highest point of the race, the Drielandenpunt (320m), where the borders of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet each other. Their gap is 6'22, with 124km to go.
87km to go, Vrakelberg
The next 40 kilometres, nothing much happens. The domestiques of the Katusha team control the pace of the peloton, not letting the gap of the 6 leaders grow too much. So 87km before the finish, the gap is 6'49.
56km to go, Bemelerberg
Gabriele Bosisio from Lampre has made the jump from the peloton to the leading group. In this group, most of the work is done by Dutch Kruijswijk. Nevertheless, the advantage is decreasing, as the riders are about to enter the final part of the race. 56km to go, and 4'06 left.
26km to go, Gulpenerberg
The race starts in the ascend of the Gulpenerberg, 26 kilometres before the finish. Kruijswijk and Bosisio are alone up front, and have a lead of 1'36, when the first of the favourites attack. Joaquim Rodríguez shows why his domestiques did all this work and has a fierce attack.
24km to go
We think it's too early in the race to counterattack, so we decide to let our luxury domestiques (Poels, Ruijgh & Vanendert) continue with a high pace. But before the ascend of the Kruisberg, 24km before the finish, a group of 4 rides away from the peloton. And these 4, Damiano Cunego (Lampre), Linus Gerdemann (Katusha), Simon Gerrans (Qantas) and Denis Menchov (Sony Ericsson) join Rodríguez.
21km to go, Kruisberg
Ascending the Kruisberg, the 2 leaders get caught by Cunego and Horner. The 4 have a '34 gap to the peloton, and this is the sign for some chaotic moments, the tv-cameras can't follow. First Chris Horner (Lotto) and Milano - San Remo winner Alessandro Ballan (BMC) attack out of the peloton.
19km to go, Eyserbosweg
After that attack, the situation chances every hundred metres. We finally get an overview while ascending the Eyserbosweg with 19km to go. A group of 12 riders is in the lead: Philippe Gilbert (Lotto), Alexandre Vinokourov & Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Ballan, Carlos Barredo (Rabobank), Igor Antón (Euskaltel), Horner, Rodríguez, Menchov, Gerrans, Cunego and Robert Gesink. The other riders from our team have missed the split and are chanceless for the win! But at the front of the group, Gilbert launches his attack and only Vino tries to follow him. The others simply don't have the energy left to do so.
15km to go, Fromberg
Gilbert has managed to create a gap and is alone in the lead. Vino is already '26 behind, and the others follow at '42.
11km to go, Keutenberg
The group catches Vino and the riders start the steepest climb in the Netherlands, the Keutenberg. The steepest part is up to 22%! Gilbert extends his lead, '39 to Joaquim Rodríguez, who has launched another attack. The other 10 riders, still including Gesink who has decided to stay in this group as he doesn't have the legs to fight Gilbert, are '52 behind.
4km to go, Valkenburg
Gilbert has entered the last 5km and he is about to enter the streets of Valkenburg. He is showing an outstanding performance, as he is faster than the 10 guys behind him. The lead has grown from '39 to 1'09!
1km to go, Cauberg
Phil has reached the foot of the Cauberg and has only one km remaining. His lead has even become bigger: 1'28!! Unbelievable!
In the group behind, Gesink has difficulties in staying in the group, but has found the wheel of Igor Antón to start the uphill sprint. Can he get a top 10?
Finish
Philippe Gilbert crosses the finish line, to claim his 2nd win in the Amstel Gold Race. What an amazing performance, a real cycling demonstration!
2nd place
Then the sprint for the 2nd place. Damiano Cunego wins it, 2'04 behind Gilbert! Rodríguez gets the 3rd place, and Robert Gesink sprints to the 8th place.

The winner
Word from the DS
We can be happy with this result. Gesinnk was the strongest of our team and the only one who could stay in the group of favourites. Being probably the worst sprinter in that group, a 8th place is a good result.
Edited by dienblad on 28-12-2011 22:16
The next stop in the Ardennes classics is la Fleche Wallonne. The 201km route brings the riders from Charleroi to Huy. The local and terrible Mur de Huy has to be climbed three times, and the last time is aso the finish.
In the previous 76 editions, most of the wins went to Belgium (38) and Italy (18). Record winners with 3 wins are Marcel Kint & Eddy Merckx (Belgium) and Moreno Argentin & Davide Rebellin (Italy). Last year, all the favourites got surprised by Kevin Seeldraeyers, who was succesful after an early attack.

Our team
The favourites
After his demonstration of power in the AGR, Philippe Gilbert is the biggest favourite to win the Fleche for the first time in his career.
Damiano Cunego got 2nd in the AGR, and with that result he has set himself in the list of favourites. Can he beat Gilbert?
And of course the number 3 of the AGR is one of the biggest favourites. Joaquim Rodríguez is one of the best hilly riders in the world and is looking for a win.
The outsiders
Chris Horner (Lotto), Igor Antón (Euskaltel), Frank Schleck (Nissan), Alexandre Vinokourov & Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Robert Gesink & Peter Sagan, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin), Simon Gerrans (Qantas), Michele Scarponi (Lampre), Carlos Barredo (Rabobank) and Rigoberto Urán (Sky).
Our goal
Our sponsor wants a top 5, so that'll be our goal. The race is easier to control than the AGR, so depending on how the race develops, we try to control it untill the Mur de Huy starts.
The race
128km to go, 1st climb of the Mur de Huy
In the first 73 kilometres, there were a lot of attacks. But because every time, a big group (10-20 riders) got away and every time there was an outsider in it (attempts by Gerdemann, Vanendert, Luis Leon Sánchez), the peloton chased them every single time. So in the first ascend of the Mur de Huy, the peloton is still together.
50km to go, Cote de Bousalle
After the summit of the Mur de Huy, 13 riders ride away from the peloton and the peloton lets them. Martijn Keizer (Vacansoleil) is the initiator of this attack and he gets followed by Bauke Mollema & Maarten Wynants (Rabobank), Franco Pellizotti (Lampre), Michal Albasini (Qantas), Anthony Geslin & Arnold Jeanneson (FDJ), Tadej Valjavec (Astana), Karsten Kroon & Steve Morabito (BMC), Eduardo Gonzalo (Movistar), Dries Devenyns (Omega Pharma) and Tom Danielson (Garmin). 50km before the finish in Huy, they have a lead of 4'21.
30km to go, 2nd climb of the Mur de Huy
The 13 leaders have become 11 leaders, as Jeanneson and Keizer couldn't follow the pace anymore. The 2nd ascend of the Mur de Huy has started and they still have a nice margin of 2'54.
11km to go, Cote d'Ereffe
11 kilometres before the finish, the leaders are still 1'49 in front of the chasing peloton. As Gilbert sees the same scenario as last year, he decides to launch an early and surprising attack.
The rest of the race
Oops, no more screenshots. Not taken? Deleted? I don't know, but I can't find them anymore .
So this is what happened:
After the demonstration in the AGR, we saw that this was THE attack, so Gesink counterattacked. And succesfuly, because together with Simon Gerrans, Chris Horner and Roman Kreuziger, he joined with Gilbert and they quickly overtook the leading group. Behind them, Lampre and Katusha was doing the pace, but the 5 kept in the lead with '30 when they reached the foot of the Mur de Huy. Gesink was on the wheel of Gilbert. Down the road, in the peloton, Peter Sagan attacked in the descend towards Huy.
In the last climb, Gilbert easily sprinted towards the win, his first in the Fleche Wallonne, and Gesink got outsprinted by Gerrans and Horner. Sagan closed the gap to Kreuziger but was to let to overtake him for the 5th place. The first riders of the "peloton" finished at '52.

The winner
So no screenshot, but I've got the feeling we see that picture again after Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
Word from the DS
We're stoked with this result. Gesink (+3) did incredible, and also Sagan had such a good day (+5), he did not wanted to wait forthe Mur to sprint for place 6. And again, we made the sponsors happy!
The Giro del Trentino serves as a perfect preparation-race for the Giro d'Italia. There are 4 stages, one ITT, one hilly and 2 with a mountain-top-finish, so it's no surprise that riders as Damiano Cunego (record winner with 3 wins), Paolo Salvodelli, Francesc Moser and Vincenzo Nibali (who won the Giro last year) are on the winning list.

The favourites *** Tejay van Garderen (Colnago), Andy Schleck, Leonardo Bertagnolli (Lampre) ** Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago), Fabio Duarte (Nespresso), John Gadret (AG2R) * Rory Sutherland (Christina), Emanuella Sella (Lampre), Damiano Caruso (Liquigas)
Our goal
No real goals. This is the first race of the season for Andy Schleck, so to win the GC is probably too much. But he's a contender for a stage win in the last 2 stages.
Stage 1
The race kicks off with a 13.4 kilometre long ITT from Riva del Garda to Arco.
Tejay van Garderen has to start early and sets the best time so far. But his time is so fast, he even wins the first stage! His time: 18'08.
Marc de Maar is the best rider from our team with the 4th time at '25. In between are Andriy Grivko (Astana, 2nd at '13) and Matthias Brändle (Nespresso, 3rd at '18).
And what about Andy Schleck? 143rd time at 1'37.... No comment.
That hurts...
Has Andy got any TT or PRL potential left, actually?
Because if that would be, you should send him to a training camp, in preperation for the Giro.
The 2nd stage is the hilly one, from Dro to Ledro Bezzecca, 180 kilometres long. The last 15 kilometres are uphill (average gradient of 4%).
A group of 7 riders form today's BOTD, including Matthew Lloyd (Astana), Jure Kocjan (Team Type 1) and Romain Zingle. In the only KOTM-sprint of the day, Zingle is first at the line, so he can go to the podium after today's race to put on the KOTM-jersey!
When the last climb starts, the 7 leaders get caught. Colnago and Lampre have done most of the work to chase them. Entering the last 7 kilometres, Lampre's Gabriele Bosisio attacks and quickly creates a gap of over 30 seconds. No one in the peloton reacts. The peloton is thinning out very quickly, also De Gendt, de Maar & De Greef loose contact with the first group, becuase of bad positioning. Only Andy Schleck is in the first group of 28 riders.
With 5 kilometres to go, Bosisio has created a gap of '41. So Andy Schleck attacks out of the peloton and again, no one follows.
But it's nood enough to beat Bosisio, who claims his greatest win in his cycling career!
Schleck has blown up his legs a bit and looses ground in the last kilometre. He eventually finishes '43 behind Bosisio, nearly finishing in front of the first peloton.

Word from the DS
Again, a pretty good stage for us, with the KOTM for Zingle and the 2nd place for Schleck, despite his bad form.

Has Andy got any TT or PRL potential left, actually?
Because if that would be, you should send him to a training camp, in preperation for the Giro.
TT 72 and one star left
PRL 68 and 2 stars left.
But he was in a pretty bad form (74) and I let him start too fast, so he was out of coloured energy bars with 3km left. And I don't use training camps midseason. I'm still confident about the Giro, because of his Mo ranking of 85.

MO 85???
In my careers Andy never gets up to 85, but Contador gets HILL, MO, PRL and TT 85
Edit: random potential
