Team CSC | Le Tour de France

Next up is E3 Prijs Vlaanderen, which will be a normal race report. When I've finished with the result reporting from Criterium Internation and Vuelta a Castilla y León, then I'll do a full coverage of Three Days at Panne, which will be our last warm-up race for the cobble classics.

Team: Fábian Cancellara, Stuart O’Grady, Karsten Kroon, Anders Lund, Juan José Haedo, Nicki Sørensen, Kurt-Asle Arvesen and Martin Pedersen.

The last one-day classic before Tour of Flanders. The team will stay in Belgium after this race however and will be joined by Lars Michaelsen, when Critérium International is over, to compete in Three Days at Panne, where we will have two very serious GC contenders in Fábian and Stuey. But first this race had to be done. We’ve actually been in Belgium for quite a while now as me, the team and a two other sports director travelled to Flanders after Milan-San Remo, and we will first leave again after Gent-Wevelgem, so we have to get use to it.

We were just about the only, that had their very sharpest cobble specialists picked for this race as the only real challenger for Fábian and Stuey today was Wiesenhof’s Stefen Wesemann. The race started off in the same manner as Dwars door Vlaanderen, as no one wanted to break away early on.

img212.imageshack.us/img212/7121/feltws3.jpg
Nothing unusual happened in the first part of the race; the pack hit some páved sections and got strung out.

As this is a continental race, we let the initiative to the continental teams and especially Wiesenhof, was keen on making something happen. But nothing really happened, so we decided to bring forth our whole team to begin setting some pace and to explode the pack on the most crucial cobble sections.

img178.imageshack.us/img178/3215/csce3bg2.jpg
The continental pace was just too low as we decided to add some pace to the pack on the last 70 km.

This payed off and with 40 km to go, a four-man group, with Fábian, Stuey, Kroon and Stefen Wesemann (WIE) got away from the pack. And as those guys with no doubt are the strongest cobble riders in the pack, there were no chance of reeling them in, eventhough Quickstep tried their best as they seperated a group of three of their riders from the pack to chase the leaders down. But it just wasn’t doable.

img54.imageshack.us/img54/198/audbruddy0.jpg
We got usself in a great position as we had three guys in the deciding four-man group. Poor Wesemann.

Karsten Kroon had to let go however as Wesemann was actually riding pretty strong. Our hope was to settle this in the sprint as Wesemann would have no chance against Stuey in the sprint. Wesemann knew this but apparently he wasn’t so strong, as he didn’t launch a single attack on Stuey. So a sprint it was. On the home stretch, Stuey actually tried to set up Fábian, But Wesemann was pretty damn sneaky as he stole Stuey’s wheel right ahead of Fábian. So Stuey had to open the sprint with Wesemann on his wheel. But Wesemann had apparently hit the wall as he had no answer to Stuey’s acceleration. Fábian overtook Wesemann with no problems, but Stuey was gone and he also claimed the win ahead of Fábian, meaning that our swiss bear will have to wait for his first win of the season till Three Days at Panne, which starts in two days. But at least we won today, and Stuey seems really sharp before Paris-Roubaix, so I guess we have two favourites for that race.

img441.imageshack.us/img441/9686/stueyvinderwt3.jpg
Stuey is having a fantastic season, having already won Tour of Australia earlier in the season.

2nd stage of Critérium International is a hilly stage, and our best hope must be to get Julich and Dave through without losing a lot of time, so that they can gain some positions on tomorrow’s crucial time trial.

So Julich is in a pretty good position before the last time trial. José Iván Gutierrez however looks impossible to catch as he’s a great time trialist.

Last stage of Vuelta a Catilla y León. It’s a quite hilly stage so Andy has the chance of scoring a top ten GC result if he does well today.

Nice domination in E3 Prijs Vlaanderen...and good tactics. I afraid those hills all the time..and move my captain with lieutenants up front to avoid getting splited and for chase job..wich is almost impossible in cobble races.

First up today for Team CSC elsewhere, was the crucial time trial in Critérium International, which is also the penultimate stage. I followed the time trial from our team bus in Belgium on a laptop, as we haven’t got a TV in the bus. What’s up with that? Just a sitrep from here, right now we’re in Middelkerke, where the peloton will take off on the 1st of Three Days at Panne tomorrow. We’ve Stuey and Fábian in peak conditions, so we believe we can get both of them in the top ten.

A great result by Julich as he finished on the podium, just a fraction of a second after Bradley McGee. Now Julich will take a break to prepare for the Tour de France.

Elsewhere in Belgium we had a team racing this small one-day race. It’s a quite hilly race and we brought a quite strong team lead by Fränk Schleck, who is still on a high after winning the Paris-Nice.

Fränk takes his fourth win of the season. He’s really havin’ a stormer. Look out for him in the Ardennes and in this summer’s Tour de France.

www.velonews.com/images/int/12438.18983.f.jpg
Fränk is really having the season of his career so far, having already collected more victories this spring than he had before the season.

Yes Frank seems to be going good, will he keep his good form though?

niconico
Yeah I'm pretty sure he will. As a result of him suddenly doing so well in Paris-Nice I felt that I had to train him a bit harder, meaning he right now is in a bit better shape than planned, but he's actually not in so good form that he'll become too fatigued before the Ardennes. I've decreased his training rate a bit right now, and then I'll increase it again during Basque Tour.

So watch out for this guy Smile

Hey man long time lurker first time poster and I have to say I'm an avid reader of this story. It's really enjoyable, and giving me good ideas for my own career. Right now I'm in 08 as Barloworld, but am kind of falling apart after Hunter said he won't re-sign... Anyway, just keep it up and I'll keep reading.

I've been quite busy lately, meaning I haven't had the proper amount of time to update the story. But I should have the next update here by tomorrow.Smile

April 3rd – 5th: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/65/Flag_of_Belgium.svg/20px-Flag_of_Belgium.svg.png Three Days at Panne 2007 – Stage 1 | Middelkerke > Zottegem – 192 km

First stage of the final preparation for Tour of Flanders is on. I’ve been with the team for quite a while now and I will stay here until the LBL is over in the end of this month. But back to today’s race. This is a very crucial race for the cobble riders, because of the race profile. This first stage from Middelkerke involves 4 laps of 48 km, where the riders will cross one cobble section on each lap.

A group got away early on the course. This group contained De Vocht (PRL), Pronk (UNI), Tiralongo (LAM), Commesso (TCS), Grishkine (NIC), Detilloux (FDJ) and Amorison (LAN). As we didn’t consider this breakaway to present any danger to us, we avoided working for the first part of the race. But suddenly a group of about 15 riders, including big names like Christophe Mengin, Roger Hammond, Manuel Quinzato, Wilfried Ctreskens and Kevin Hulsmans, seperated itself from the pack on the cobbled section. So we had to hit the front and reel them in.

img338.imageshack.us/img338/6186/farligtudbrudfh1.jpg
It cost us a few riders to work at the front of the pack in an attempt to reel in the breakaway riders.

The 15-man group quickly caught the early breakaway, but luckily we managed to reel them all in with 100 km to go of the stage. But Quinzato wasn’t satisfied with this, so he launched an attack and drove away singlehandedly to catch up with the last remaining breakaway rider, Paolo Tiralongo.

img267.imageshack.us/img267/1527/quinzatoangriberae8.jpg
Quinzato was really determined as he tried a long range effort on today’s 1st stage of Three Days at Panne.

But it wouldn’t last long as Quickstep decided to up the pace, as they thought that Quinzato was too dangerous to slip away and with 70 km to go, the strong italian was reeled back in. After crossing the cobbled section for the third time, the peloton was down to 19 riders, with 65 km to go. Quickstep’s pace had really put some pressure on the pack.

img515.imageshack.us/img515/2459/hostestyrtvk1.jpg
Leif Hoste had his dreams of winning Three Days at Panne shattered as he crashed just before the final lap.

On the penultimate lap and with about 48 km to go, the pack was down to only 16 riders. We had Stuey and Fábian among them.

img108.imageshack.us/img108/3480/sidsterundeau4.jpg
The pace set by Quickstep had cost a lot of riders.

All the hot shots were still here however, counting the likes of Flecha, Boonen, Pozzato, Burghardt, Hincapie, Gusev, Bäckstedt and Ballan. And of course Stuey and Fábian. On the last hills of the stage, this group split up however and only Stuey was able to catch up with the leaders. Fábian was in a very unlucky position on the final hill and eventhough he wasn’t feeling very good today I’m sure he could’ve kept up with the leaders.

Stuey found himself in a 9-man group with Tom Boonen, Filippo Pozzato, Vladimir Gusev, Björn Leukemans, Allesandro Ballan, Marcus Burghardt, George Hincapie and Juan Antonio Flecha. Fábian rode in a quartet with Magnus Bäckstedt, Nico Eeckhout and Luca Paolini, who were chasing the leaders.

But unfortuneately the couldn’t catch the leading group, so it was to be settled between the nine riders in front. Stuey was really having a field day, but Tom Boonen has the edge over Stuey, having already beat him on a few occasions in this year’s Paris-Nice. And the fast belgian wasn’t to be fooled today as only Pozzato and Stuey could answer to his acceleration when the sprint began. None of the two could pass him however, so it ended with another victory for Tom Boonen in the 2007 season. Stuey finished 3rd and Fábian came in 55 seconds later in 13th place.

Tom Boonen took the first stage of Three Days at Panne as he won the sprint in a 9-man group.

So Cancellara’s hopes of winning the GC suffers a severe blow, as it seems impossible to regain his lost time on the short time trial on the last stage. Stuey still has a shot of winning it though as he’s the better time trialist than Boonen. But he can’t afford to lose to much time on the line on the next two stages.

Tom Boonen is having a great season so far and he’s looking really strong ahead of the Tour of Flanders.

Pardon?

I kinda have a problem here. I simply can't start my PCM07 game, making it quite difficult for me to update the story. Everytime I try to open the game the game freezes on a total black screen, where the only thing I can see is the red cursor. I've been recommended to delete the Pro Cycling Manager 2007 folder (c:/Documents and Settings/My Name/Application Data/Pro Cycling Manager 2007), but that didn't work either.

Any suggestions?
