Another hilly classic. 2nd one out of those 4 in Spain in the early part of the year. Much harder than a first one.

My goal for today is finishing in the top 15 which seems highly possible. With 20 kms to the finish, the main group isn't that big. Breakaway is still up front.

i.imgur.com/X7b49lW.jpg

10 kms to the finish. Many attacks already happened, but no one was able to escape.

i.imgur.com/aJrBk1i.jpg

5 km - only 1 rider in front of the main group.

i.imgur.com/7ppvFdT.jpg

V. Madouas is looking good to grab a win right here!

i.imgur.com/IfFScc5.jpg

He was caught right on the line! He was probably out of any energy. I finished right outside of the podium - 4th.

3rd classic in Spain in three days. More hills but this time those climbs are much longer. I'm one of the outsiders here so my goal here is to finish in the top 5.

We start Coll de Puig Maior. Pace is really fast.

i.imgur.com/fUNpbxx.jpg

I decided to setup a strong tempo on that climb and on the top of it I had 1'13" lead over the peloton!

i.imgur.com/umpJFVW.jpg

I'm seriously going to win this! No one is really chasing and after completing the downhill I still have a massive lead over the peloton - 1'42".

i.imgur.com/lecphy7.jpg

They are chasing! Few riders decided to attack but with 4 kms to go I still have 1'00" lead.

i.imgur.com/j7ORnXe.jpg

What a fantastic win! I decided to attack and what a solo ride it was!

Last classic in Spain. Probably the easiest from all 4, but still it might end with a finish from smaller peloton.

With 7 kms to go I decided to attack. The peloton was riding slow, so it was a great chance to escape.

i.imgur.com/zDxuJvD.jpg

Not many riders decided to follow - 3.4 km.

i.imgur.com/H7v1HrD.jpg

I was caught by that group of riders and they outsprinted me at the finish. 6th place is very good. Especially when you know you have to finish in the top 50.

Even though it's considered as a flat stage, it can ends by an attack on those climbs close from the finish.

We are on that short climb really close from the finish - 5.5 km.

Am I going to win this?

Even though this stage have few climbs in the 2nd half of this stage, I don't think the difference will be that big. Probably a finish from a small group. I'm currently a leader of GC.

Really high pace on those climbs - 30 kms to go.

17.5 km to the finish.

S. Yates now played that finish perfectly. He attacked with 3 kms left and he gained enough gap to grab a stage win.

Last stage of this race. S. Yates is only +3" behind me in GC but I don't think he can gain that time. If nothing bad happens... I'll win this race.

That was really close to actually lose the race! S. Yates was in the position to grab a win here, but he wasn't fast enough. Thankfully main bonus seconds has been taken by the breakaway riders.

More than 200 kms in a hilly terrain. In this race we have many great puncheurs. First stage showed that!

First out of three stages that will decide how GC will look like.

We are on the top of the Col de Bourigaille - 47 km to go.

Second attempt on Col de Bourigaille. This time from the other side.

Not many riders with me at the top - 19 km to go.

5 km - Landa, Thomas and Roglic in front of me. FDJ duo of Pinot and Gaudu right behind.

G. Thomas is out.

What a fantastic win! Roglic and Landa were out right before me and Pinot started to sprint. I barely beat him. Barely.

Col Saint Martin - 17 km with the average of 5.3%. But the first half is much easier than the second.

If you thought I'll only ride in the races with hills and/or mountains... I've got a bad news for you. Or good news. It's time for cobbles season! Yes! I think I improved in this category so I want to try myself against the best cobble specialists in the world.

I was just about to say those cobbles weren't enough to create a gaps in the peloton and it will ends via mass sprint. Wrong 7 km to go and that happened. Some attacks and splits. Thankfully I have M. Haller with me to help.

i.imgur.com/X8e3bqh.jpg

4 km to go. Haller is smashing this!

i.imgur.com/h1V7ND7.jpg

I thought I can't win this by a sprint but last 600m on the cobbles made it easier. I never thought I'll ever win a cobble classic. But I won!

Very interesting situation. Together with J. Stuyven we have 32" lead.

i.imgur.com/fFKrX3s.jpg

3.5 km! 35" lead. Who can win it?

i.imgur.com/WhKNwwk.jpg

I'm speechless. I'm absolutely speechless. J. Stuyven was the only one who followed my attack and on final few km I was following his wheel. I knew I can't beat him in a sprint if I had to ride and start it first. Luckily he was working with me and I sat on his wheel for final sprint. He started that early and I thought I can't do it. But then a miracle happened! I won my very first monument in my life!

First monument, great win! Looks like great tactics. MSR is a strange one, as the peloton doesn't take the climbs hard enough usually (but did here), but also dont really set up sprint trains either.

Thanks! Glad to see someone is still following this story, lol
And yeah, most one day classics are a weird to run. If whole peleton is going it's hard from AI to prepare sprint trains. On the other hand I was also surprised to see that kind of selection in Milano-Sanremo.

i.imgur.com/WRyenFc.jpg

I comeback here after my victory last year. I'm the defending winner and I'll do my best to win it again. Especially after my Milano - Sanremo victory.

We are 20 km from the finish. Both C. Russo and M. Haller are working at the front. I'm just right behind them.

A bit of offtop. Since the last few races went too easy - from that point my difficulty got increased to EXTREME. We'll see.

i.imgur.com/Pyi34Lp.jpg

More WT classics. A bit of cobbles but not much. Flat, so probably a mass sprint or solo victory.

I'm first to start a sprint!

Pure sprinters easily overtook me in that sprint. But I'm satisfied with that 5th place.

This classic is very similar to that previous one. Also flat, also with a bit of cobbles. The difference is that we have more hills that might be a factor today.

I'm not really fighting for a decent result today. My job is to work at the front of the peloton.

We are in the middle of one day classics rampage. WT flat classic with a bit of cobbles. Surprisingly I'm one of the favourites. I won so many mountain stages and I'm a favourite of cobble classic. Exciting!

126 km - Flat easy terrain is now over.

i.imgur.com/rqzgbUq.jpg

80 km - The Carnage is real. Only 28 riders in the front group. I still have a couple of team-mates with me.

i.imgur.com/DkRV2KP.jpg

That is the first time we go through a finish line. My team-mates are almost empty. Not looking good.

i.imgur.com/BVYgq5s.jpg

28 kms to go. A lot of splits in the front group. I'm sadly alone now.

i.imgur.com/SFJ0SNV.jpg

Front group is still with 1'26" lead. No one wants to work so I have to chase and manage my energy well.

i.imgur.com/MkRjmmj.jpg

5 kms to go. 7 more riders with me - 3 in the front - 26" lead.

i.imgur.com/cGrBt1i.jpg

It's all back together - 2 kms to the finish!

i.imgur.com/aDGFSyI.jpg

I still had some energy in me because of that downhill finish. But my speed just wasn't there. I was beaten by the faster riders. 3rd place is still a good result.

i.imgur.com/DagXcts.jpg

It's finally over! What a hell of a ride that was. I maybe could end this a bit higher. I was too much behind on that Oude-Kwaremont where many riders completely went away from me. I needed to manage my energy well so I wasn't able to catch them. I finished 15th.
