Omloop Het Volk
Welcome to the first classic of the season, as we journey over 200 km of spectacular countryside from Gent to Lokeren. Its cobble country today, with 17 cobble sections, so watch out for the strong Quickstep team working for Tom Boonen. On the other hand, Forumers prepare to suffer!
The Race:
In driving rain, Sven Montgomery of Gerolsteiner is the only early attacker, and he quickly builds up a lead. Levi Leipheimer suffers an early puncture, and struggles to get back up with the rest of the pack.
During the fourth cobble section, Stefan Schumacher takes a tumble, and doesn't get back up as he withdraws from the race.
We then enter a tough section, with 5 back to back cobble sections over some tough hills as well. Vladimir Gusev is the first to suffer a puncture, he could have been an underdog today, but Quickstep are building the pace up. Garzelli then punctures as 5 riders shoot out and join Montgomery. Its a dangerous break now, with Ballan and Boonen with three Quickstep team mates pushing the pace on.
Team CSC have pushed the pack and its now broken up. 18 riders now chase the leading group including Cancellara, Flecha, Wesemann and Hincapie. Oh, and now the CSC forum riders are paying for theat chase, they've drifted out of that group. And what's this? Tom Boonen has brpken away alone as the rest of the front group is caught. This could be it!!!
Flecha has a puncture! This could be disastrous for his chances, there not slowing down for him.
We're finally out of the cobbles, and Tom Boonen is set for victory, he has a commanding lead over a group of 7 (Cancellara, Hoste, Ballan, Hincapie, Buyens, Backstedt, Wesemann). Albert Rasmussen is currently the leading forum rider and is going strong.
Into the finish now, and its Tom Boonen all the way, as he takes an impressive victory. A sprint behind him gives Fabian Cancellara second, whilst Alessandro Ballan narrowly takes third. Albert Rasmussen glides in on his own in group sixth, to take a fabulous 21st, great work there.

Yeez... If these are the time gaps for Omloop Het Volk, i'm terrified to see the minutes put on in Roubaix or Flanders... Well, at least we managed to beat Basso in this terrain... (So why not take him on in the Giro as well...) |
