Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 1

Today, the World Tour Season was set off by Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under. This is how the race went for us:

Jesse Sergent is leading the peloton, all our guys are close to the front
i58.tinypic.com/2373hv.jpg

These guys were the only serious group of the day: Chavanel (FDJ), Schulze (Euskaltel), Malori (Movistar) and Bobridge (GreenEdge)
i58.tinypic.com/l8iyq.jpg

After they were caught, the peloton takes a new shape as the sprinter teams take over, Lotto Belisol, Garmin Barracuda and Lampre do the big work.
i60.tinypic.com/ruzfx1.jpg

After a while, it gets too boring for someone in our jersey. He begins to move forward.
i59.tinypic.com/o0v7l0.jpg

And he attacks with 20km to go. Who could it be? Of course it’s Jens!
i59.tinypic.com/qye62b.jpg

His former team mate Nelson Oliveira (Lampre) organizes the chase.
i61.tinypic.com/2m7ats2.jpg

This is the gap that was left just after the 10km flag
i61.tinypic.com/141tcpf.jpg

Jens gives it his all but is caught with 3km to go
i61.tinypic.com/29y4klg.jpg

Very close finish between the favourites: Greipel takes the win over Farrar.
i57.tinypic.com/v7cxa9.jpg

Wonderful news for our team: Hayden Roulston surprisingly wins the “sprint of the rest” to take 3rd in both stage and GC (sadly no photo available)!

Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 2

Here is what happened during stage 2.

It was the first of two hilly stages in Australia which will sort out the GC, and exactly that is what happened today.

The first riders trying to get away were Damien Gaudin (AG2R), Frédéric Guesdon (FDJ), Iván Gutiérrez (Movistar), Cameron Meyer (GreenEdge) and Kristof Vandewalle (RadioShack-Leopard). Vandewalle won the KOM of the day, earning 16 points, just before Gutiérrez (12) and Gaudin (8).

After they were caught, the peloton began to split up at the following climbs. 10 riders were up and away at the front, one of them our leader Fränk Schleck, climbing to the finish together.

At 2.6 km to go, an attack was launched by Alexandre Vinokurov (Astana), only Grega Bole (Vacansoleil) and Daniele Pietropolli (Lampre) were able to follow him. The trio got 8 seconds over their 7 companions.

Fränk tried everything and made a small move with 1km to go, giving him the first spot in the second group, followed by Nicholas Roche (SaxoBank) to complete the Top 5.

So we think that we're in a nice position for the decision at Old Willunga Hill.

Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 3

Stage 3 was a quiet stage that went just as expected: it ended in a bunch sprint, and once again it was not the favourite of the day, André Greipel, that was able to win it.

The most remarkable info of the day is that two prominent riders were forced to abandon the race: Andrea Guardini (Astana) and Peter Sagan (Liquigas) were not able to get to the finish after a crash.

Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 4

Today’s stage was a hectic stage in which our team was very active. In the end it was a sprint finish, but not one of the expected kind. Let's wrap it all up:

Here's Laurent Didier after winning the first climb of the day in order to defend his blue KOM jersey
i59.tinypic.com/9sz28o.jpg

Watch out everybody, the Tour Down Under is coming!
i59.tinypic.com/b4hxzs.jpg

That’s the group of the day: Marzoli (Acqua & Sapone), Lightart (Lotto-Belisol, Dutch Champion), Boivin (Liquigas) and De Gendt (Omega Pharma QuickStep)
i59.tinypic.com/246t11j.jpg

With 30km to go, and a 1:20 gap Thomas Lövkvist runs a big effort at the last climb of the day in order to join the race leaders
i59.tinypic.com/11tvd5l.jpg

… which he could actually manage to do!
i61.tinypic.com/21es4jl.jpg

At 10km to go, the sprinter teams take over at the top of the peloton, and also race leader Vinokurov (orange jersey) is really careful.
i58.tinypic.com/3450vep.jpg

With only 30 seconds advantage, Lövkvist launches a last desperate attack at 4km to go.
i59.tinypic.com/24b0qra.jpg

… that unfortunately is countered by De Gendt and Marzoli. The Italian speeds away!
i57.tinypic.com/2qx3qdg.jpg

Still in the hunt: Veelers with Kittel as well as Greipel, Petacchi, Farrar and Bozic.
i60.tinypic.com/fep26q.jpg

But they’re too late! Marzoli rescues a few meters of advantage into the finish!
i57.tinypic.com/25fn4fs.jpg

De Gendt follows, and then Lövkvist takes a strong third place, just before Farrar and Petacchi rush in.
i62.tinypic.com/2cfzec3.jpg

Coldfire's Statement

It was a really active stage today. Our primary goals were Laurent going for the climbs again, which he did very well, and hunting a stage win. We actually wanted to send Hayden to the front group because of his sprinting abilities, but he said he didn't feel so well today, so Thomas decided to make a move and rewarded himself with a good 3rd spot.
We're happy today and really looking forward to the decisive stage tomorrow. As always, Old Willunga Hill will determine the overall, and Fränk was in a great shape today, so I'm optimistic.

I'm sorry and a bit sad, but at the moment I just don't find the time to present you some progress. I promise, the story is not abandoned, just delayed until probably the coming weekend or next week.

I'm still motivated, it's only a matter of time. So please guys, be a little patient and soon you'll get new stuff to read Cool

Santos Tour Down Under, Stage 5

Today there was something special on the menu: the finish atop the famous Old Willunga Hill, which usually decides the GC of the Tour Down Under. Let's see what happened:

Our guys lead the peloton towards battle.
i60.tinypic.com/69gg0l.png

Only two guys started a serious breakaway attempt today: Roy Curvers & Gregory Rast
i60.tinypic.com/2lq4pc.png

A nice view of our 3 special jerseys in the race: Laurent Didier (KOM), Fränk Schleck (LUX Champion) and Hayden Roulston (NZ Champion).
i58.tinypic.com/rc2fl4.png

A nice view of the peloton, halfway through the stage.
i59.tinypic.com/155nevq.png

At that time, 4 guys are 4 minutes back after a crash. And the crash group is a rather prominent one: Dennis (Garmin), Viganò (Caja Rural), Wyss (BMC) and Modolo (Lampre)
i58.tinypic.com/5dorhj.png

At 40km to go, Jesse Sergent completed his work at the front, and Hayden Roulston takes over the leading role.
i62.tinypic.com/2im6wkg.png

Behind Team Coldfire, race leader Vinokourov organizes his helpers. Clearly, Coldfire and Astana are the active teams today.
i61.tinypic.com/33201o7.png

Here we have a look on a first little selection at the top of the first climb. The Coldfire leading group was reduced down to 3: Schleck, Voigt and Lövkvist. Vinokourov and Albasini following.
i60.tinypic.com/23rvlgz.png

On the way to Old Willunga Hill we have a leading group of four. Vinokourov is isolated.
i59.tinypic.com/2iuca3k.png

In the middle of the climb, Voigt and Lövkvist were unable to follow, so it's a decision between Fränk and Vinokourov.
i59.tinypic.com/2qav0j6.png

Fränk launches a desperate last attack close to the finish line, but Vinokourov is able to stay with him. Who will prevail in the final duel? [In the back we can see Voigt and Lövkvist taking 3rd and 4th of the stage.]
i60.tinypic.com/nx8arb.png

And it's a stage win for Fränk Schleck! He outsprinted Vinokourov on the legendary Old Willunga Hill! The Kazakh, however, defended his overall lead.
i59.tinypic.com/2rek5xe.png

Coldfire's Statement

Of course we are happy that we took the win on the Queen Stage! We were in a comfortable situation at the end with an isolated Vinokourov, but he was damn strong and we couldn't get rid of him, so we only took 4 seconds from him. But for us, the quest is not over, because we will concentrate on another fight tomorrow: keeping Laurent in the KOM jersey!
