Goals Review

Here we will review our goals and chances for them.

Easy: Top 10 Classica San Sebastian

With a strong hill team, and good hilly sprinters, we have a good chance of achieving this goal. It is achievable with Gerro, Alba or Michael Matthews.

Easy Countered: Top 5 Tour de Vendee

A flat classic, meaning that we should be able to achieve this goal quite easily. We intend to bring a strong sprint team, and maybe feature Gerro because of a small hill at the end, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Medium: Podium Japan Cup

Another goal where Gerro is our go to guy. He should find this quite achievable, and we intend to give him a strong support team.

Medium Countered: Stage Win Tour de France

With Matthew Goss riding the Tour, he should be able to get this - if his Giro is anything to go by - however there will be a much stronger sprint field. Cameron Meyer has done some mountain work over the break period, while we could also see a typical Aussie fighter win from a breakaway.

Hard: Win Chrono des Nations

It's a hard goal. It's not really supposed to be achieved. However, Durbo did some time trial work and his hill ability could help him here. However, a win is a bit too far right now.

Hard Countered: Top 5 GC Tour of Beijing

Another unlikely goal, with the mountainous World Tour race a bit out of the team's specialisation. However, we will send a strong squad here and hope for things to go our way.

Some hard goals you have there!
I doubt that you will be close at any of the two hard goals. The stage win goal will be random knnowing that there should be a super strong sprinter line up.
I wish you good luck to achieve as many of them as possible!

Charity Rugby

Three of our riders were invited to participate in a celebrity rugby tournament to raise money for childrens' cancer treatment. Two of our riders were part of the Australia side that won the tournament.

Rugby

It was nice to cheer for the guys from the tribune. What a spectacular sport and so rough. Certainly not something for a light climber like myself, but I definitely see why its so popular with the people here in Australia. I have already bought a season ticket now!

Gorka, while you're here, I have a proposed schedule for you. There are a couple of races which don't suit you too well, but we need you to race most of your race days so the rest of the team doesn't run out of them.

San Sebastian (1 day)
Burgos (5 days)
Vattenfall (1)
Plouay (1)
Fourmies (1)
Quebec (1)
Montreal (1)

Vendee (1)
Paris-Tours (1)
Chrono des Nations (1)

Hmm, I think that for a decent stageracer, you'll have to let go of either Goss or Matthews. The available ones seem a bit meh.

Also, no transfer period yet, so less list making and more TDF reporting Pfft

Hoping to get some decent cash deals, but I guess you're right. To be honest, Meyer is developing really well

Most of the cycling world is enjoying the rest week of the Tour de France. Tour of Austria has meanwhile some press coverage itself, and quite some people asked me about, where I'd ride next year, seeing as my contract runs out. Since Orica GreenEdge has shown no interest in re-signing me, I took liberty to look elsewhere.

Surely, the interest comes as a result of my latest peak performance at the Österreich-Rundfahrt, where I manage to hold on with some of the best riders and I comfortably ride around Top 20. Besides the Basque Racing Series, this is by far my most recognizeable performance so far. And it looks like, it just came right to get some attention finally...

Hi, it's Mathieu.
I was just wondering what my status is for next season? I mean, I haven't been able to show my best often this season, but I am happy at the team and haven't heard about any other interested teams yet.

So am I still featuring in the plans for next year? Or should my agent find me a new team?

Mathieu

Saying Farewell

Unfortunately, sometimes it is time for people to make changes. We are sad to announce that Spanish climbing prodigy Gorka Nieve has decided to move on to Team Colombia. We are proud to have been able to give Gorka's career a kickstart, and we are delighted to be able to part with him on good terms, which cannot be said in all cases.

We wish Gorka Nieve the best in the future, and it is possible that he may return to The Rocking Oger at some point.

Renewal

On the other hand, we also have some good news. Mathieu Favre has decided to re-sign with us, and we are delighted to be able to continue to work with someone who could may well be a future Grand Tour winner. The loss of Gorka has also freed up space to sign another rider, who we have managed to sign. He will be announced surely, and we hope that you will share our jubilation at this deal.

Star Signing Announced

Orica-GreenEDGE are delighted to announce the signing of climber Diego Johnson. Johnson is among the Top 10 climbers in the world, and is the beginning of what we hope will be a revolution of new mountaineers at our team. Johnson joins the team as absolute leader on a one year contract, and you all will hear from him shortly.

In other transfer news, we have all but agreed a deal for a great Southern European stage racer, while we are also in pursuit of a few young Aussie talents.

Hello Orica,

I am very happy to have signed a contract with the team, as it shows their commitment to nurturing young stage racing talents. I joined the team as I wanted the opportunity to lead a team at a Grand Tour, as I hope to progress in the pro ranks.

Next year I hope to be allowed to lead the team's GC hopes at the Giro or the Vuelta, as I don't believe that I am ready to be leader at the Tour, and I think that the racing will suit me more as I am a better climber than time trialler, I also believe that the team will be very strong next year as we already have some strong sprinters.

I think that next year I won't win a Grand Tour but I know that I am capable of getting a top 10 on GC as I have gained a lot of experience riding the Tour with Astana, however I knew I had to leave as I wasn't able to talk to anyone as they all spoke Russian or whatever their language is, so I felt very lonely, however as I speak English I knew that an English speaking team would make me feel more at home.

Therefore Orica was the obvious choice as I would get leadership possibilities as the team doesn't have a renowned GC contender, however I believe that they have a lot of talent climbers, who I hope ill stay with the team as they could prove to be key domestiques, and potential stage winners at races, riders such as Cam Meyer, Weening, Simon Clarke and Svein Tuft who although isn't a climber, he is a good friend of mine as we live close by so we train together and that was part of the reason that I joined, as he is one of my best friends, so when I heard he may be leaving the team I was very sad, but cycling is a ruthless sport.

Anyway I can't wait to join the team as I see a lot of possibilities arising and I hope I can be as successful as I aim to be.

Thanks

DJ

Dear Mr Rocking Oger

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to resign Svein Tuft and Simon Clarke, as they are good friends of mine and I believe that they would perform a key role as domestiques, and them being on the team would make me happier as a rider, and I think that it would be better for me as a rider.

Thanks

My Introduction- Mitchell Birt

Hello all, I am 23 year old cyclist from Tasmania so Orica-GreenEDGE allows me to spend time at home in Australia where I enjoy being. My goals in cycling are to win the Tour Down Under and to at least podium a Grand Tour. I specialize in the Mountains (74MO, 73HIL) but am also quite strong in time trials (FLA72, TT73 and PRO71), so I hope to be trained into a strong stage race rider. I want to be successful for the team and this is where I hope to spend my years as a cyclist.

Results:
Although I have ridden very few races as a pro I have already achieved great results. I won my first race which was Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California where I also had a quite decent GC placing. I also finished 6th in the GC in the Osterreich Rundfahrt after multiple top 10 stage finished.

I look forward to racing with my fellow countrymen especially that young Spaniard named Gorka Nieve who I hope to take under my wing and get help from during my career.

Mitch

Le Tour de France

The biggest cycling race on Earth, and Orica was right there in the thick of it. Here's how it unfolded for the Rocking Oger:

Stage 1

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0022_zps77c387f0.jpg
Gossy was always looking for a good result to continue his fine season. He was up front for the first sprint. He latched onto the Lotto train. Smart decision?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0023_zps952226b7.jpg
Under the flamme rouge the big man was in a good position. Would he be blocked though?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0024_zps8198d9bc.jpg
Nope, he would challenge for the win! Come on Matty!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0025_zpsfe7903bc.jpg
Not quite, but good enough for 2nd. Great start. Wonderful.

Stage 2

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0031_zps417a5873.jpg
Simon Clarke tried to attack early on, but his group was brought back.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0037_zpsdb353032.jpg
Gerro attacked with a few other guys as they caught the breakaway. Could they stay away?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0038_zps7a3ec616.jpg
He went over the climb first. With Australia cheering him on, he continued in true battling fashion.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0039_zps0a8da3e1.jpg
Simon went on the attack with 10km left. No-one could stay with him!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0042_zpsffde5c63.jpg
He entered the final stretch alone! Booyah!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0043_zpsd953e5e1.jpg
And it's a true Aussie fighting victory! It didn't take long, goal achieved!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0047_zps3c9b77d2.jpg
And Orica's in Yellow!

Stage 3

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0050_zpsfe0f153a.jpg
We started the day with Yellow, and hoped to hold it at least until the end of the week, with mostly flat stages on the agenda.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0053_zpsbe145431.jpg
Clarke got into another break, but again it was brought back.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0054_zpsb2775764.jpg
He did manage to pick up a couple of mountain points though.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0061_zps050fd507.jpg
There was a big attack, which included the world's finest riders. We were in trouble, but huge props to Daryl Impey for some amazing pace work.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0066_zps9d991a46.jpg
Gerro managed to win the sprint behind a couple of attackers to take 3rd place. A podium in all stages so far! Wonderful!

Stage 4

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0092_zps84dbc345.jpg
Next up the TTT. Traditionally we are very strong in this discipline.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0093_zpsefb517d8.jpg
With champions from Canada and South Africa, as well as the Yellow Jersey, we powered to a very strong 3rd place finish, just 10 seconds behind Astana. Our new signing (although he wasn't at that point) Diego Johnson was first across the line for the Kazakh team.

Stage 5

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0136_zps66c6c02c.jpg
The break was caught very late, so not much organisation for the sprint. Gossy was up there, but not in an ideal position.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0137_zps5cdf348e.jpg
However, he put in a great effort to catch up. Another podium?

Not quite. 4th place though, so another Top 5. Really racking up the points here, which means that we may inadvertedly lose Mathieu Favre Sad.

Stage 6

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0151_zps0950bcf8.jpg
Gossy finally showed up for the Intermediate Sprint.

Unfortunately he was a bit back for the sprint. Still a chance thoguh.

Yep. Another monster effort. Could he get another podium even?

An obstructed view of a very impressive third place.

Stage 7

Once again Gossy was hanging around in the right places.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0170_zpse3dc72b0.jpg
Unfortunately there was just too much congestion. Therefore, we couldn't complete a week of Top Fives.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0171_zpsbef2db49.jpg
8th place today, so an amazing week of 7 Top 10's, 6 Top 5's and 5 Podiums.

Stage 8

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0174_zps076b1652.jpg
The first GC stage. Unfortunately it would probably be our last day in Yellow.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0181_zps0853abf3.jpg
Mathieu Favre tried hard to stick with the early attacks.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0182_zps4c7b6719.jpg
Unfortunately he wasn't quite up to it, but Cam was doing ok; keeping up with most of the others.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0184_zps05488225.jpg
But he was around the back over the first climb. Luckily the top came early enough to regroup.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0185_zps24e70e0c.jpg
Unfortunately Gerro would definitely lose the Yellow. It was a great run though, it has to be said.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0189_zps00dec224.jpg
Cam was caught out once again in a split, but he worked hard to try and close down the gap.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0190_zpsefdec822.jpg
And it worked. All good for now.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0201_zps17959927.jpg
18th place will do for the first mountain stage.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0202_zps080e6f99.jpg
Great to see. Simon & Simon coming in together.

Stage 10

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0227_zpsd5eb5eee.jpg
Nothing really happened on Stage 9, but we had another sprint stage to bring up the decade.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/EPIC%202014/PCM0231_zps5fe71555.jpg
