Paris – Nice
March 9th, 2013
Pernes-les-Fontaines – Aix-en-Provence: 157.2 kms - Flat
The last "flat" stage of Paris - Nice is barely flat, the route is constantly up and down, with several climbs that could cause problems for the sprinters including an uphill finish. Luckily the only major climb is early in the race and should give time for the sprinters to recover.
The break of the day forms in normal fashion, and the group of five including KoM leader Ameäl Moinard is able to extend a lead out to a peak of around eight minutes. Only in the final few kilometers would the break be pulled back in today.
Moinard wouldn't be the only rider out to get points for the King of the Mountain, as Vincent Jérôme (Europcar) would challenge him over each climb. The first two summits including this category two climb would be won by Moinard, and Jerome would take the later climbs.
The two sprint trains of Lampre - Merida and Orica - GreenEdge would lead the riders into the final sprint. Thor Hushovd sits calmly behind the Orica train hoping to finally get his victory in this tour.
Matthew Goss (Orica) would continue to display his dominance of the sprints easily taking the win. Grega bole (Vacansoleil) would finish second with Lloyd Mondory (AG2R) finishing third. In the worst finish of the tour yet for Thor he finished 11th.

Tirreno – Adriatico
March 9th, 2013
Tarquinia – Folingo: 164.8 kms - Flat
Italy gets its third day for the prolific sprinters in the field. With no KoM points on the road, the sole focus of this race will be its last kilometer. There are some climbs still in the route as we make our way to Foligno but nothing the sprinters can't handle.
The break of the day has no problem getting formed, with Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel), Ramon Sinkeldam (Argos), Dmitriy Gruzdev (Astana), Paolo Longo Borghini (Cannondale) and Martijn Maaskant (Garmin).
Movistar sends everyone up front at the orders of race leader Francisco José Ventoso. The sprinters start to all line up behind them, Cavendish, Sagan, Degenkolb, Greipel, EBH, Farrar etc.
For all the sprinters in the field, the peloton is unable to give them a chance as the breakaway stays away. Rubén Pérez just gets by Ramon Sinkeldam for the victory, with Borghini close behind. Grezdev also holds on long enough to finish ahead of the field. Norwegians Boasson Hagen (Sky) and Kristoff (Katusha) are the first from the main field to cross the line.

Paris – Nice
March 10th, 2013
Peynier – Tourrettes-sur-Loup: 215.7 kms - Hilly
With only two days left, Paris - Nice is still very much open for many riders to win. Stage seven gives the biggest climb of the race, and near the finish, though a long descent after could pose just as much of a chance or challenge.
Several riders would form the break of the day, including Julien El Fares (Sojasun) and Ameäl Moinard, both competing for the king of the mountain points. Moinard would win this category two climb, but El Fares would take the later climbs including the category one to close the gap.
A strong attack would be made by Rinaldo Nocentini (AG2R), follwong his move would be Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto), and THomas Voeckler (Europcar). Their attack would be caught just after the descent on the climb to the finish.
The winner again on the hilly stage would be Luis León Sánchez (Blanco) with Sylvain Chavanel finishing second and Michael Rogers in third. The bonus seconds from the win would propel Sánchez into the lead by one second over Maxime Monfort.

Tejay currently has the lead, by 10 seconds. (Those results are stage results, not overall).

Tirreno – Adriatico
March 10th, 2013
Foligno – Ortezzano: 134.2 kms - Hilly
The route from Foligno to Ortezzano is quite hilly as the the announcer would say, the race starts by going uphill and finishes doing the same. A couple of short steep climbs mix with some longer more gradual climbs to map out today's course.
The starting climb makes it very difficult for anyone to get away and form a true breakaway, though many try. The early category two king of the mountain sprint would end up going to Romain Bardet (AG2R) with Jens Voigt (RSLT) probably yelling at his legs already coming in second.
On the descent from the KoM a true breakaway was finally able to form, with Taylor Phinney, Ángel Vicioso (Katusha) and Mauro Finetto (Vini). None of the group took particular pleasure in sprinting for points, and Finetto was essentially unchallenged as Phinney and Vicioso were still trying to recover from bridging a two minute gap to Finetto.
With two thirds of the race done, the climbs get a little bit more serious as there is always the chance of someone getting away. Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) would make the first move, with Daniel Ratto (Cannondale) and Serge Pauwels (OPQS) taking his wheel. They wouldn't get too far though.
Over the final climb, Cadel Evans makes a move to really shake up the pack. Fabian Cancellara (RSLT) does everything he can to stay on the Australians wheel, but eventually has to let him go. Cadel would get around 20 seconds lead on the group, but get caught only in the last hundred meters.
The winner today would be Lars Petter Nordhaug (Blanco) as he powered to the lead in a final sprint, able to get past Cadel Evans and hold off Michael Albasini (Orica) who took second, and Sammy Sánchez (Euskaltel) in third.

Paris – Nice
March 11th, 2013
Nice – Nice: 128.4 kms - Hilly
The final stage of Paris - Nice goes out from Nice and then comes back. Three climbs mark the profile, with the first being by far the biggest of the tour. However because the race ends on a descent and the final climb isn't major, likely this should end again in sprint of the remaining climbers. The bonus seconds for winning though would be enough to change the lead again.
A large breakaway of nine riders would form at the front, KoM leader Ameäl Moinard would find his way into the group, as well would team Sky's prerace leader Vasil Kiryienka. Moinard would be able to lead the group over the climbs and ensure being the King of the Mountains.
Action would have to wait until the last climb, but when the peloton got there, it started quickly. Movistar's Rui Costa made the first move, putting a gap between himself and the field. Blano Procycling would be quick to react to protect Luis León Sánchez and his yellow jersey.
Later though it would be Sánchez himself putting the peloton in danger as he makes a break with Simon Gerrans (Orica), John Gadret (AG2R) and Dan Martin (Garmin). The quartet would crest the top and catch the BOTD quickly on the descent. Giving them some extra firepower.
With the yellow jersey out front, Radioshack would take control and lead a blistering pace down the mountain, the leaders would be caught shortly before the finish, and the gamble Sánchez made would end up costing him everything. Lieuwe Westra would win the stage, but second place Maxime Monfort would take the race, bonus seconds enough to get back into yellow. Michael Rogers finishes out in third.

Tirreno – Adriatico
March 11th, 2013
Giusto – Rapagnano: 164.1 kms - Hilly
Stage 5 of Tirreno - Adriatico is some time in the hills with and uphill finish. A select group will find their way to the line and getting some time over the rivals could be possible with the proper attack.
The break of the day is a solid five man group currently with Matthieu Ladagnous (FDJ) at the front, followed by Romain Bardet (AG2r), Simone Ponzi (Astana), Daniel Oss and Kevin De Weert (OPQS).
The group would be joined by a secondary break of Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil), Fabian Wegmann (Garmin), Roman Kreuziger (Saxo), and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar). The merger of the two groups would happen with about three quarters of the race done, and would allow many of the riders to finish in the lead group.
One of the riders that wouldn't finish with the lead group would be Roman Kreuziger, who would end up trying to hold on at the back of the peloton following this crash while with the breakaway. Daniel Oss does some nifty bike handling to avoid joining Roman in this mess.
Lars Petter Nordhaug goes on to win the stage, holding off a strong move from Fabian Cancellara, race leader Rubén Pérez finds his way up to third while a group of 26 riders finishes with the same time. More noticeable losses of time from Sky stars Bradley Wiggens and Chris Froome though puts them completely out of contention and EBH the only Sky rider with a chance anymore.

March 12th, 2013
Teramo – Torricella: 162.6 kms - Hilly
The last stage for the climbers to make their mark on this race gives some of the steepest climbs yet of the race with some percentages over 14% and a repeated grade in the circuit of over 10%. Now will be the last chance for those in contention to win the race.
The break of the day features seven riders and gives many teams a chance to avoid working in the peloton. This group would do well staying away until the last trip around the circuit where many would then go on to help their team leaders.
Once the circuit starts so do the attacks and Daniele Ratto (Cannondale) and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) are at it again, over the race these two have probably been consistently the most aggressive riders. Constantly attacking the Euskaltel led peloton.
For the first time this race the British show up, and Bradley Wiggens (Sky) is not only in the lead group, but attacking! No sign of life from Chris Froome (Sky) yet but at least one of the two seems to be finally getting into the season.
Speaking of key riders waking up following a Björn Leukemans (Vacansoleil) attack is Andy Schleck (RSLT) again probably the first time we have mentioned his name this season and he is 11 minutes off the time of the race leader, so just being up front has to be good for now.
The only rider able to put any time into Rubén Pérez's (Euskaltel) lead is teammate Samuel Sánchez who takes off eight seconds in the win, and moves himself into third place overall. Maxim Iglinskiy (Astana) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) finish second and third on the stage respectively.

S. Benedetto delo Tronto – S. Benedetto delo Tronto: 161 kms - Flat
The final stage is an out and back, starting off very flat before the riders get a little bit of climbing in and head back towards the start and the completely flat finish. The race should move quickly and the hills could give the breakaway just the slightest chance, but a final mass sprint should be expected.
The BOTD would form before reaching the hills, and would enjoy their time out, KoM leader Manuele Boaro would join them just in case he needed to protect his lead. While the race would come into question Boaro would end up winning the classification.
With the finish line in sight, the sprint trains would take off, and the leadout of Tom Boonen (OPQS) for teammate Mark Cavendish would get their group out to a lead. But perhaps the sprint was started from too far out, Daniel Oss would quickly fade as he tried to match the acceleration of the Manx Missile.
It would the the tail of that train, Edvald Boasson Hagen that would take the victory as the rest of the group faded back. Germans John Degenkolb (Argos) and André Greipel (Lotto) would finish second and third while Cavendish would get seventh and Oss 16th.

Milan – San Remo
March 17th, 2013
Milan – San Remo: 299.3 kms - Flat
Milano - San Remo is our first monument of the season, the sprinters classic. While the additions of Cipressa and Poggio have made the race more difficult, the sprinters still have the edge, with occasional wins from riders like Fabian Cancellara.
The break of the day starts early, and the riders surely know they have nearly 300 kilometers to cover ahead of the peloton. But led by Ivan Basso (Cannondale) there certainly is hope for this group. Basso is joined by fellow Italian Marco Pinotti along with Gatis Smukulis (Katusha) and Ricardo García (Euskaltel).
Little action happens until the Cipressa when the attacks start to come. The first launched by Marco Marcatto (Vacansoleil), and followed by Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky), teammate Bernhard Eisel, Sep Vanmarke (Blanco), Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil) and Fabian Cancellara (RSLT).
On the decent of the Cipressa Fabian Cancellara decides to try and take matters into his own hands.....err.....legs. Displaying his incredible ability to downhill he quickly gets away from the bunch and starts to close in on the breakaway just ahead. The race director is caught completely surprised by how much faster Cancellara can go than the cars.
Just as everything gets put back together, Philippe Gilbert attacks over the top of the Poggio, and races down towards the finish with a small advantage. Fabian Cancellara would try to climb with him, but would be dropped easily and now fades to the back of the leading group.
Philippe Gilbert! The attack of the Poggio wins the race as he is just able to hold off Edvald Boasson Hagen and the sprinting bunch for the victory. Luis León Sánchez (Blanco) finishes third and many of the sprinters race in to round out the top ten. Marcato still able to take 10th after being in the breakaway all day.
