Amgen Tour of California

Stage 4 - Sonora - Clovis (208,5km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_1-2085.jpg

The last of the so called flat stages today. And just by looking on the profile it looks like the most difficult. Lots of up and downs before the last 50km are indeed flat but there is no guarantee that any sprinter is left after 6 KoM.
I will give everything today to cover Dombrowski, who is in a fantastic shape here looking for a good result in the mountain stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_2.jpg

Mannion is our guy in todays break. Mainly to protect the KoM lead in case of a dangerous rider there. Luckily none of the other 3 have collected points so far.
It must be great to ride together with Gilbert in a break I guess. The other two are de Marchi (Androni) and Boily (Spidertech).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_7.jpg

On the 2nd KoM again Tiralongo attacked and just like yesterday the Italian climber decided to continue and joined the group at the 4th KoM. He now could become a danger in the KoM ranking.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_9.jpg

Garmin really spped up now. 70km and the gap is down to 4min. Haussler really must feel great and seems to peaking for California. Good for him that Mark Cavendish injured last week as he was announced as top sprinter here as well. On the other hand I guess this course wouldn`t become his favourite one.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_11.jpg

The stage really is the hardest so far and with the hot sun shining down on us, we need to drink a lot. As De Buyst and Avis are already in later groups and Brown already reached his limit it`s my task today to get some water bottles. We almost reached the last 30km, which are completely flat and the group is down to 67 including some sprinters such as Haussler, Matthews, Boasson Hagen or Hushovd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_13.jpg

Exactly 10km before the finish Mannion is back in the peloton. With Gilbert and Tiralongo going fast, he is totally exhausted now. The others still try but will also caught soon.
Garmin and Rabobank won`t allow anything else but a sprint today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_15.jpg

This is also the end of my working day. With 9,7km to go I feel the effort I spent in the breakaway yesterday and during todays stage. With the sprint preparations going on high speed I am happy to ease up for the last kilometers.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_4_17.jpg

Haussler wins the 2nd stage in a row by 2 bike lengths. Matthews, who was thought to be his biggest opponent wasn`t even able to sprint as he was totally empty in the end.
2nd goes to Gallopin ahead of El Fares.

We reached our main goal. All 3 climbers reached the finish without time loss while I lost 5min. As said I really eased up in the end.
Parker keeps the KoM lead but is equal with Tiralongo now and this promises an exciting fight now.

In less good news 6 riders had to abandon today as they couldn`t finish inside the time limit. One of them unfortunately was De Buyst, who isn`t really made for hard stages. Good bye, Jasper. See you next week I guess. Pfft

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 5 - Bakersfield ITT (30,3km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_5_18-303.jpg

We really could need Craddock here. He`s the only time trialist in our team and already showed in San Luis what he is capable to do against the clock.
Without him none of us will be able to come even close to the winner time I guess.
Although we are already in May it`s only the 2nd individual time trial for me. And I can`t say that I expect a lot. Most important for us is that Dombrowski has a good ride and doesn`t lose too much time. Joe really isn`t a time trialist and prefers the hard climbs.
Next to Wiggins, who must always be named as favourites I think we Americans have good chances. Taylor Phinney, which I know pretty well from some Junior races has good chances as also the Garmin riders Zabriskie and Vandevelde.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_5_19.jpg

Without any ambitions I start my time trial. Dyachenko is leading at the moment but with 7 Americans in the top10 at the moment it`s not a bad rate.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_5_21.jpg

Taylor Phinney is having a good ride beating Dyachenko`s time, which last pretty long.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_5_27.jpg

Phinney still in the lead even after Zabriskie, Millar, Pinotti, Vandevelde or Evans finished. Looking good for him now and Wiggins might be the only one to beat this time as it looks right now.
But he can`t.
Taylor Phinney wins the 5th stage by just 4s while the other riders had a bigger gap to the duo.

For us the time trial went as expected. Nothing spectacular but also nothing too awful. Boswell only losing 2min to Wiggins had a good ride. Also Dombrowski only lost 2'27 on the Brit which is okay for him. And my 67th with more than 3min back, well, couldn`t care less today. More important is that I was able to rest a bit and should be fit again tomorrow.
Next two stages must show how far our team is.

Thanks all. National Bonus probably gave him the win I guess. The form should be alright for both.

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 6- Palmdale - Big Bear Lake (185km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_1-185.jpg

There we go. The first really tough stage although there are lots of rest zones during the final climb and a flat part in the end. So surely not the stage where we can expect big time gaps and even a bigger group could finish together.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_2.jpg

After two days without spending too much energy I felt good again. So the team sent me into the breakaway and luckily the group around me was allowed to get away.
With Androni`s Moreno Allue there is one guy with less than 4min to Wiggins, so he could become a problem later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_5.jpg

Two more riders joined us before the sprint. 6min gap between us and the peloton.
The weather really changed after going South towards L.A. I would have preferred the sunny days we had in the last days.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_7.jpg

As Lachlan Morton (Chipotle) already collected quite a few points I always fought for the KoM and the big one today on the Cat.1 mountain was won by me in a sprint between the two of us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_8.jpg

Sky is controlling the peloton. They reached the summit 10'43 later with 103km to go. Pretty good gap actually and maybe something is possible today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_10.jpg

All of us worked together very well and we had the same goal: To reach the finish before the peloton catching us.
With 68km left we still had 7'13, which is quite impressive as they really go fast behind.
But now the climb to the Big Bear Lake waits for us. An extremely long but not that hard mountain.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_12.jpg

I continued to collect the KoM points and in the end I even overtook Parker in the ranking. This wasn`t really planned today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_13.jpg

With 32km left the waiting phase also ended in the peloton. Some teams really wanted to gain time now and so we saw the first attacks, which is obviously not ideal for us in the breakaway.
Evans, Barredo, Sanchez and Pedraza all attacked now with Sky and Liquigas doing the pace.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_15.jpg

They were immediately caught again and obviously some of them just wanted to test how the teams would react.
But it just led to more attacks. Hesjedal first and Nibali just behind.
Again it`s not looking like they would already go all-in but this was at least more powerful than the last.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_17.jpg

They almost gained 2min/10km during the climb and already with 27km they are less than 1min behind us. So I can say goodbye to the small stage hope but at least I will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow, what is a great success for me.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_19.jpg

With the breakway being doomed now and more attackers trying to get away Mannion and Brown are send to the front supporting the Sky team, where Lövkvist is left as last helper.
Still 25km left although we almost reached the summit.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_21.jpg

This was quick. Just being caught I already found myself behind the group. So again I will ease up for the last kilometers to save my energy for the hard Mt.Baldy stage tomorrow, which will be horror for me.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_23.jpg

In especially Rabobank, BMC, Liquigas and Garmin tried a lot today while Sky and our team controlled the pace in the peloton to bring everyone back.
A very important part was Dale Parker today who amazingly rode the last kilometers from the front giving no one a chance to create a gap.
Still the peloton had ~60 riders left, which is a bit bigger than expected actually.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_25.jpg

In the sprint it was a close battle between the riders that attacked the less and saved some energy this way.
Surprisingly Dombrowski was sprinting very well today. But was it enough to win the stage?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_26.jpg

Very close between him and Wiggins, but the photo finish proves that Joe was a tiny bit faster. What a win! We never expected to win a stage in this race with such a strong startlist. In especially not in a sprint of such a big group. But I guess Parker`s pace let a lot of riders suffer and he and Joe really peaked for these two days in California.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_27.jpg

He can`t really believe it. Will 2012 be his big breakthrough?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_6_28.jpg

I finished the race in the 2nd big group 7min later and have already heard the great news. Congrats Joe, you really deserve it.

In other news 18! riders didn`t finish in the time limit. It hit some teams very hard. Chipotle lost 3 riders, Competive Cyclist even 4.
Team Optum Kelly Benefit amazingly lost 7 riders in todays stage, which means they are completely out of the race after losing their 8th already 2 days ago. Ouch.

What a nice surprise to see Ryan in the KoM jersey!
Is this his new goal here, then?

johannes-w
Great to get the KoM jersey Grin hopefully you can keep it after the Mt Baldy stageFrown
And amazing win for Dombrowski! Smile I especially liked the screen of the the riders on the downhill with the snow - great shot! Wink

What a Brilliant win for Dombrowski

And Ryan getting the K.O.M jersey as well, what a day for the team Wink

roturn
Thanks all.
@ Ian: As it wasn`t planned it would be a nice bonus. On the other hand only the next stage has KoM.
@ johannes: I haven`t even seen there is snow falling. Wink Then I might have shown it better I think.

As said it`s a different stage than the Cyanide version due to the wrong finish there with 5km less of climbing than in real. So I took the Mt. Baldy stage from Johan`s brilliant Fantasy California GT. The climb seems to be harder and becomes steeper and steeper the higher you go.
Also the first mountain chain is harder. Lots of KoM points today.

Amgen Tour of California

Stage 7 - Claremont - Mt. Baldy (190km)
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_1-190.jpg

Today is the day I was most afraid of. I like going uphill, yes, but for more than 2-3km in a row? Not really. So it`s just to reach the finish within the time limit today as I will surely struggle a lot.
This is more the terrain for Dombrowski, who showed great form yesterday. We did celebrate the win of course but due to the importance of todays stage we went to bed early and wait with the alcohol until after the race. Wink
Boswell and Parker should be the guys today that will support Joe longer than me.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_2.jpg

Having a jersey gives you some more television appearance I guess. In especially in a race like this and as American. Many fans that rarely haven`t heard of me are screaming my name just now. It`s one more step for me to become a professional cycling in a higher division but first I still need to learn a lot.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_3.jpg

Nathan Brown is our rider in todays breakaway of 11 riders.
Coming to the KoM guys only two have scored so far. Boily with 6 points and more dangerous Burghardt with 14 points. With ~50 points being given at the first mountain chain this is a very dangerous rider for us. Brown will try to steal him this points.
Also Bol, who is in the break is surely a danger as he never really lost time so far and is less than 2min down on Wiggins as 15th overall.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_8.jpg

Not the best 2nd television appearance I guess. I almost made it over the climbs but the Cat.1 is a hell of a climb. Not the longest but one of the steepest roads I have ever rode. And I am not the first one losing contact. Lots of riders are already behind me.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_10.jpg

Sky is doing a great job for Wiggins and with 40km the gap is down to 3min. And seeing the hard Mt.Baldy climb it should be easy to catch the group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_12.jpg

Still 20km to go but we already reach the start of the climb. Now there won`t be any other flat part. And we see the first attack. It`s Garmin`s Vandevelde, 6th in the overall with only 1'03 back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_14.jpg

Sky still having 4 helpers + Wiggins. Not much worse for us as Mannion is still there next to our 3 climbers. The Brown group is still 1'10 ahead and Vandevelde only managed to get a tiny gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_16.jpg

The American is back but immediately the next attack. Tiralongo, Garzelli and most dangerous Van Garderen as 7th overall trying it. The group is almost reached now and won`t have any chance.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_18.jpg

Brown can`t help his leaders now but with Boswell and Parker there are still 2 good climbers next to Joe.
And again a new attack. Nibali this time together with Van Garderen and Pedraza and also Schleck is trying it now on the right.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_21.jpg

All these attacks let the group go down to 29 riders. Wiggins lost all his helpers but Lövkvist and Boswell also having problems now. He really has a bad day and different to Joe and Dale he isn`t 100% peaking for this race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_23.jpg

Now the first really powerful attack and Nibali immediately gets a good gap in between him and the group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_25.jpg

Also Lövkvist is gone now and Wiggins finds himself without any helper in this group and still 5km to ride. Evans and Schleck made contact to Nibali and higher the pressure on the Brit.
Good for him that Dombrowski needs to gain even more time after the time trial, so Parker is going to the front increasing. Unfortunately Boswell couldn`t help very much today, he just didn`t feel good.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_27.jpg

And who needs another helper, when Parker has such a great day. He quickly pulled the trio back and splitted the group a lot.
Only 4 more riders made the jump to the trio.
BMC with 3 riders the strongest team here.

3km left and it`s the by far steepest part of the climb. Now or never. Joe saved lots of energy by not attacking too early when there were still many helpers that were able to close the gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_31.jpg

This another time splitted the group completely. Wiggins, Schleck and Evans proved to be the strongest and also Dale is still riding strong next to Nibali and Rodriguez.

SchleckRodriguez

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_33.jpg

He didn`t stop until the line. He even gained more time on his opponents and won by 27s to Wiggins, who will keep his lead and already 1min to Schleck as 4th.
How far will he climb in the overall. Top10 for sure.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_34.jpg

Also a great result for Dale, who also will get a top10 after this stage and gets soem more points in the KoM. 5th today after all the work he made. Joe surely knows where to say thanks first.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Eastman/Amgen_7_36.jpg

More than 30min later I reached the finish. Well, inside the time limit, so good day. Or better half-good. Burghardt collected enough points and wins the KoM ranking by 2! points to Parker. What a bad luck. But well, therefore the GC is looking far better than expected.

The first group around Hesjedal, Van Garderen or Kreuziger finished more than 3min behind. This means Joe amazingly is 2nd overall now 2 seconds ahead of Evans. Also Dale climbed to 7th overall.

Time to change to Extreme I guess, although I really peaked for this race and had Parker and Dombrowski on 98/99 before the stage. So after California it will be extreme here.
