Thanks a lot for the support, it is much appreciated and keeps me going even when i am ill (on the other hand i have lot of time).
Paris - Nice, stage4
Profile
As you can see, the profile of the stage 4 is much harder than the previous days. The up and down profile and steep ascent just before the finish are the things that can make it really difficult for some of the riders. However this is a WT race and riders are of a high quality. Because of that, we can expect really large group getting to the finish in one piece and sprinting for the win. Can Peter Sagan make it three in a row?
This time the break of the day got formed almost at zero kilometre and made themselves a very big gap of 9 minutes very fast. The riders were Lequatre, Buffaz, Reynes and Devenyns, one of the better punchers in the whole field. They were all back only 1"30" in GC.
The pack was aware of that and started to work, but that did not prevent duo of Flecha and Simon to go after the initial break. They had a huge gap to eat in front of them.
It seemed like an ethernity, but these two finally made it and catched the former group with 40kms to go, while the peloton was coming closer and closer, thanks to the work of Radioshack, Garmin and Liquigas.
And here is the catch pictured in the nice french countryside, the break of the day had no chance against favourite's teams working together.
The pack entered the last 5kms section with the nasty steep hill and that was the point, where courageous attacks of Freire, Cummings and Carrara took place. The timing was perfect, the atacks were strong, but was it enough to catch peloton by surprise?
No, it was not, or at least not fully. Freire started his sprint from the first place, next to Sanchéz and Farrar, while cummings and Carrara were caught and started being passed by Sagan and Breschel, who were going the fastest side by side. This will be real drama to the line, is Freire the winner?
No, because here is Matti Breschel celebrating the near win in front of Peter Sagan and Tyler Farrar, what a powerful sprint from the Dane all-arounder! Great win from very strong Rabobank, even more valuable because of earlier puncture of Breschel in the beginning of the stage.
But Peter Sagan can be satisfyied by fact, that Cancellara missed the podium and pass the leader's yellow jersey to him by only 1 second.
The comment of Avin, the journalist noob
Well, i loved today's action, whole day was packed with interesting situations. First the break with huge advantage, than Simon and Flecha juming to them, before they were all caught and Breschel blasted to the finish along Peter Sagan.
The sprint battle of these two was really awesome and i am looking forward to more of this throughout the season.
Tommorow the first tougher stage with finish in famous brutal climb in Mende, so stay tuned!

Paris - Nice, stage5
Profile
The fifth stage of Paris-Nice 2012 is one of the hardest, with four categorized climbs and finish atop the wall in Mende. The climb is rather steep than long, so dont expect extreme time gaps or big time losses, but climbers who like gradients over 15% should be like at home there and can gain some time.
The first part of the stage is again very nervous, as there are lot of KOM points in the game today, there is peloton on the early 1st category climb, a minute behind group of four riders, led by Muravyev from Astana, who also won the KOM sprint.
In the end, it is group of nine riders ahead, when the former group oif Muravyev was joined by another five riders including Nuyens or italian champ Visconti. But the most dangerous name in the break was Cyril Lemoine from Saur-Sojasun, who was 6th in GC with only 37 seconds gap to Peter Sagan.
We jump with this picture to the last 1st category climb on the route, some 30 kilometres from the line. You can see that Sky and Europcar work at the front, but the break was still 3 minutes ahead.
And with 10 kms to go, it was clear that peloton will not catch them with this tempo. First one who realized that and attacked was Voeckler, followed by Moreno and Horner.
But the peloton was moving fast and these three only held a slight advantage, while the front group was still a minute ahead. It was the situation at the foot of the Mende climb. Liquigas riders were still in position, but the race was taking its toll on them.
We move to the flamme rouge and there are riders sprinting up this brutal climb everywhere. Liquigas duo Sagan and Moser is very badly positioned around 30th place, up front Izagirre from the former break is going for the win, followed by others from his group. Voeckler and Horner did benefit from their attack and were close.
Here should be the picture of Gorka Izagirre celebrating his win, but it got lost (dont know how, sorry for that). Voeckler and Horner completed the podium and were awarded 20 seconds gap to another big group coming at the same time, that included fast finishing Liquigas boys Peter Sagan as 11th and Moreno Moser as 16th.
Sagan holds onto yellow jersey, but it is getting tight!
The comment of Avin, the journalist noob
Mende climb is indeed something special and it was also the case today. Voeckler and Horner were awarded for their gutsy attack with 10kms to go and jumped to the top 5 in GC, with pretty good shot at the overall win. But the hero of the day is experienced Basque Izagirre, who was in the break whole day and still was the best at the slopes of Mende, congrats.
The yellow jersey battle is now very close ,with twelve riders still within a minute!
