Tour Mediterénéen Stage 3

Todays stage was a fairly flat ordeal, containing a couple of minor hills, but nothing likely to let a rider escape the group long term.

The riders of TYT had something of a day off during stage 3, no major attacks were seen by a Youtube rider, as a large bunch set off as a break from the main group.

They put a large gap between themselves and the following pack, and between they fought out the KOM points form todays stage, with the first and largest checkpoint (worth 8 points) going to Dirk Bellemakers.

Spoiler

Team Bretagne gave chase to the pack, and very slowly started to grind them back in, they reduced the lead before having a strange change of heart, and leaving the riders of Rabobank CT to haul instead.

Spoiler
i42.tinypic.com/1fbojk.png

With the line drawing ever closer it became more and more likely that the stage would be won by a member of the breakaway, as such many of the riders within started to try and attack, and claim a stage, it looked likely that Samarotins of Cofidis, who was the strongest sprinter in the front group.

Spoiler
i43.tinypic.com/1takco.png

With the group still a few critical seconds ahead, noone from the break had managed to establish a lead personally, the sprint set off from within, whilst the Peloton started snapping at there heels, and as they crossed the line, the groups had re-merged, but it was indeed 2 riders from within the group who claimed victory, Samarotins came in second place, after a surprisingly strong sprint finish by the AG2R rider David Le Lay

Today in many ways suited the riders here at TYT perfectly, no-one had to work excessively, and none of the sprinters were able to set up any form of attack to take a jersey out of reach from our riders. Il Cassano maintains the Under 25 jersey, and Bassie Adriaan still leads the KOM competition.

Tour Meditérenéen Stage 4

The penultimate stage of the Tour contains 3 distince sections, an initial hill start, a flat central, and a hilly final 50km. The stage is often won in the break, due to the profile of the course, or by a strong rider attacking from the peloton itself late on. The main threat to José on Todays course was likely to be Thomas Voeckler of Europcar, whose riding style perfectly suited the stage.

As the riders set off it was Bassie Adriaan who once again found himself in a small group out in front, attacking the peloton, a group of 4 riders initially managed to get away, shortly joined by the 5other riders to finish the 9man group that got out in front.

Spoiler
i44.tinypic.com/65wilc.png

The first two hills were fought competitively between Francis Mourey of FDJ, and Bassie, both finishing first on one of the climbs, and second on the other. Bassie did enough to retain his jersey with a fairly strong lead going into tomorrows final stage and looks well set to claim the jersey overall.

Spoiler
i41.tinypic.com/rgyqgo.png

With 100km to go multiple riders attempted to break for the escape group most notably Oliphant of Endura racing, who persistantly attacked, and for a short while managed to gain a 1minute lead over the break.

Spoiler
i39.tinypic.com/dcesdk.png

As the second set of hill loomed closer, Thomas Voeckler of Europcar made a break for it from the peloton in a 4man group containing Youtube Twitters leader José Alvés. José was the only rider to stay with him and together they reeled in the break where Alvés was able to take some shelter on the wheel of team mate Bassie Adriaan.

Spoiler
i42.tinypic.com/xogqd2.png

With just 15km to go, it was clear the break would hold on to there victory, no one within the peloton had put in sufficient effort to chase them back in, and the attacks started, a few riders managed small gaos, but no one managed a conclusive attack until 10km out, José Alvés gave it a shot.

Spoiler
i41.tinypic.com/fwn8xw.png

He got a break until about 2km off the line, when Thomas Voeckler put his foot down, accelerating past Alvés up the small hill leading to the finish, nobody could keep up with Voeckler as he powered over the line 9" in front of his breakaway companions, Alvés, a weak sprinter, came in 6th place within the group, leaving him 29" behind going into tomorrows final stage of the tour.

Spoiler
i40.tinypic.com/hs5q53.png

Voecklers ride was enough to place him in the leaders jersey going into tomorrows stage, however the final climb may well prove his lead to be insufficient for him to win overall.

i41.tinypic.com/142daf6.png

Due to the distance of the peloton away from the lead group, Il Cassano was unfortunate to lose the under 25 jersey, but Alvés, Youtubes young leader, finds himself just 9" back from the lead in the youngsters jersey. He remains hopeful of placing a successful attack on the GC, as he is one of the strongest climbers in the Tour Mediterénéen this season.

Tour Mediterrénéen Stage 5

The final stage of the tour was likely to prove decisive in the GC, due to a steep climb to the finish where a good climber could grab those vital seconds to claim overall victory in the 5 day race. The most likely looking candidates for victory today seemed to be Youtube Rider José Alvés, Kiryienka of Team Movistar, or Thomas Voeckler, a decent climber, and already 40 seconds ahead of the oppostion.

i44.tinypic.com/11bp7r5.png

The race has a very rapid start due to a checkpoint set extremely close to the start point and immediate attacks came from multiple riders, most notable, capable rider Miguel Rocha who has so far had a quiet season but will be looking to excel in the classics as a strong climber/cobbler.

Miguel Rocha claimed victory in the first checkpoint and then went on to claim second at the second intermediate stage, as the initial break put a large gap between themselves and the peloton.

Spoiler
i41.tinypic.com/2hd9xdw.png

Not long after the second checkpoint, the initial group of 4, were caught by 5 riders from minor teams and the break looked strong, pushing there lead as far as 5minutes at one point.

Spoiler
i42.tinypic.com/34yofpz.png

With the break starting to threaten the GC, Team Europcar set up at the front of the peloton, dricing a fast pace such that leader T.Voeckler
(Stage 4 winner, and current GC leader.) would have a good chance of overall victory, they rapidly closed the gap to under 2minutes as the teams drew close to the steeper hills at the end of the stage.

Spoiler
i44.tinypic.com/e986y9.png

As the first climb began, the breakaway was reeled in, no rider managing to maintain a position out in front, and Alvés and Voeckler both found themselves well placed on the wheel of a team mate near the front of the peloton.

Spoiler
i39.tinypic.com/2ijk8lu.png

The riders entered the final steep finish up Mt. Faron as a group, but after no after less than a kilometre of grinding, Kiryienka of Movistar attacked, Alvés gave instant chase, jumping off Adriaans wheel in pursuit of the Pro Tour climber. Voeckler attacked in the second group, but it seemed they had left it to late to catch, and Voeckler knew as the line crept into sight, that his grips on the yellow jersey was sadly no more...

Alvés was unable to catch the early attack of the Movistar climber, and passed over the line 29" behind Kiryienka, however he had started the day in front of the opposition rider, could this be enough to seal an overall victory?

Tour Mediterénéen Final Results

General Classification
The yellow jersey changed hands almost every stage during the tour, only one rider managing to hold on for consecutive days sprinter Florian Vachon maintaining his position after the group finish on stage 3.

Thomas Voeckler made an impressive attack on stage 4 to claim the yellow, with a small gap going into the last day, but the final climb eventually proved to be the separating factor, the climbers making a big enough time gap to wheel him back in and claim a GC victory, Unfortunately for Team Youtube Twitter, the time bonus for first place was enough to provide Kiryienka with the victory, by just 1 second over the young rider José Alvés! José rode brilliantly, but the more experienced rider had done just enough to secure first place overall, none the less, second place is a fantastic achievement for a 21 year old, so congratulations to him, and maybe in the future it could be a much larger tour which José targets.

Points Jersey
The jersey was not one that the TYT riders were interested in during the TDM, and the final winner was rider Yann Huguet of Skil-Shimano, claiming a podium place one the second stage, and multiple attacks for intermediate sprints were enough to comfortably secure him this jersey.

King of the Mountains
Bassie Adriaans attacks over the early stages of the tour, combined with his aggressive climbing whilst in the breakaways mean that Adriaan claims the KOM title, no rider was able to compete with Bassie during his attacks and he can be mighty proud of the jersey which he took on day one, and protected right to the end of the tour.

Under 25 Jersey
Alvés' attacks may not have been strong enough to compete with the most experienced of climbers during the decisive stage, but against the younger members of the race, Alvés claimed an impressive victory, his nearest rival 1'30" back. Alvés has made it clear that he will be one to watch in the mountains later on in life, his willingness to grind away at even the steepest hills, makes him a potential GT contender a few seasons down the line perhaps?

Rider of the Tour
My award this race goes to the young leader José Alvés, he made a very good attack on the overall time, just 1 second back, and he really earned the position of leader which was awarded to him after his victory in the KOM competition at the Etoilé, well done José, great ride!

Tour Du Haut Var
The first day of the Tour du Haut Var, rarely produces the overall winner in the 2 day event, the seconds much hillier profile generally lends itself to a breakaway victory near the end.

The Directors at Youtube Twitter decided to use this race, as an opportunity to warm up some of there classics riders, whilst hoping for victory from veteran captain, Heinrich Leinstein, He had support from the likes of Chen and Rocha, whilst they named powerful sprinter Peter Pal should the days come down to a group finish.

i42.tinypic.com/11l614z.png

Stage 1
The first day has no major climbs, but it does have a short steep sprint finish, which was likely to disrupt chance of sprinters victory, the team opted to try for a late breakaway win for Free Element,Il Cassano, who was asked to put in max effort today, before probably relaxing tomorrow in the peloton.

When the break set off, It was Miguel Rocha who was our representation, attacking hard up a steep first and second climbs, to claim 26 KOM points, leaving himself second overall in this competition.

Spoiler
i44.tinypic.com/103aivq.png

It became clear that Europcar had similar ideas to Youtube from early on, there team lined up at the front of the peloton, working hard to pull the break away back home, Movistar quickly joined them, perhaps a repeat of the Tour Meditérenéen? with the 3 key teams looking likely to be involved again, this time though, Youtube could claim to be the dominant force.

Spoiler
i43.tinypic.com/29z7dic.png

Sure enough, with little more than 12k to go, the break was caught, and the key team leaders all found themselves bunched in a little group, just behind the relay train out ahead. Miguel Rocha settled into the peloton, quickly but had been there for no more than 4km, when a Huge 32 man crash occurred near the front of the peloton, Pal fortunately escaped unhurt, but Jose Alvés and Timo Bern, Key riders in the sprint train were sent flying from there bikes, meaning a spritn finish would be harder to set up.

Spoiler
i43.tinypic.com/zujsm0.png

Seeing an opportunity in the slowed peloton, Il Cassano made a break for it, Attacking off the front and desparately trying to cling on to the end of the race as the sprint trains who could set up, bare down from behind.

Spoiler
i43.tinypic.com/15p1ms3.png

Sadly, though not unpredictably, the attack caused a late kick of effort to stop his escape, and he was passed in the last kilometre, he was still able to take a good finishing position inside the top 15, where as Pal was sadly stuck, boxed in, down in 27th place.

Overall, not a great day for the team, though at least Alvés and Bern were able to escape without injury, where as the team leader of Endura Racing, has had to withdraw due to injury sustained in the crash. With a s.t. finish for the peloton, and 40 men, around 3minutes behind, The leaders of Europcar and Youtube-Twitter, are well positioned for victory in tomorrow the final stage of the peloton.
