Le Boucle du Sud Ardèche - Souvenir Francis Delpech

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_1.jpg
Hupond and Huguet will share the leaders role here and try to achieve something nice. Both are in nice form and will receive a nationality bonus so I am hopeful.
Geniez, Fröhlinger and Sprick will be H&H's luxury domestiques and especially the latter one might be very important help for them.

Favourites:
***** Gallopin
**** Geslin, Joly
*** Bakelandts, Hupond, Huguet
** Vaugrenard, Coppel, Riblon, Kern
* Nocentini, Vichot, Sutherland, Galland, Roux

Gallopin's 4 victories this season is enough to rate him as the big favourite here according to me.
Geslin is the one who I can see beating Gallopin. He's the same kind of rider and is about as fast as his countryman in the sprints. It might be a nice fight between those two.

Vals-les-Bains - Ruoms
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa.jpg
The race suits riders like Gallopin and Geslin very much. The final circuit does climb two hills, but the flat, easy road down to the finish line in Ruoms might prevent escapees from succeeding to win from a solo ride. I think we might see a small group battling it out for the win here. Hopefully we'll see a Skil rider amongst them.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_2.jpg
It took a long time until a breakaway finally established, but about 50 kms into the race a 10-man group succeeded. The names in it were mostly some unknown home riders, but also some bigger names such as Nocentini.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_3.jpg
The group was never given any big advantage and were subsequently caught as we started the hilly circuit around Ruoms. Three other riders then attacked up the biggest climb and built up a nice advantage. The names were: Cano Ardila (Colombia), Monier (Cofidis) and Honig (Landbouwkrediet).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_4.jpg
They cooperated really well and for a while it looked like they could actually steal the win out of the favourites' hands, but with twenty km's to go their advantage had decreased to under a minute thanks to us and Cofidis.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_5.jpg
They were caught just as we started climbing the hardest climb for the last time. Halfway up it, Hupond decided to give it a try. No immediate reaction from any of the other favourites.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_6.jpg
Hupond reached the top of the same climb first. Behind him we finally saw some movement from the others as Galland (Saur) attacked, bringing the two pre-race favourites Geslin and Gallopin with him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_7.jpg
They couldn't close the gap to Hupond though, and he also lead over the last little hill, but G&G were closing in on him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_8.jpg
It was too late though, and Hupond had plenty of time to celebrate as he crossed the line first. Our third straight win!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/bsa_9.jpg
Gallopin was the fastest behind and took the second place ahead of Kern, Galland and Geslin. French domination in France!

Results

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_1.jpg

Great month for us, winning a total of three races. Best part was of course our domination on the cobbles.
Also nice to see that some bigger names like Sánchez is starting to get in form. Not far until the Ardennes Classics after all!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_2.jpg

No changes since there hasn't been any WorldTour races this month. Will definitely be more interesting in the next summary.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_3.jpg

Same here, no changes. Decided to include it in case someone had forgotten it. Pfft

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_4.jpg

Gallopin takes over the lead from his team mate Dumoulin after another great month, with the overall win in Tour du Haut Var being his biggest achievement.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_5.jpg

After taking 1-2-3 and 1-2-3-4 in two cobbled classics we rocketed up in the standings here. We'll do our best to stay around here for the rest of the season.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_6.jpg

3rd in Calabria. 2nd in Mallorca. 1st in Oman and Lugano. Efimkin is reborn as the rider he was a few years ago.
Best Skil rider is De Backer in 11th.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_7.jpg

Our cobble-domination didn't just give us the lead in the Europe Tour standings. It also moved us up through the list here and now we lead both team standings. This one won't be for long though.

Victories:

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_8.jpg

South African Daryl Impey has taken an incredible amount of 6 wins this season. Five of those came in Etoile de Bessèges, where he won four stages and the overall.
Actually all of these are a bit surprising. Especially Lithuanian Aidis Kruopis with three wins so far.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_9.jpg

Great season start for Cofidis, and especially Gallopin and Dumoulin. 9 wins is just impressive.
We've managed to pick up a total of five and share the 5th place with Katusha and Movistar.

Monthly Awards:

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_2_10.jpg

The first award can't have been that hard to decide. Just look at Dumoulin's palmares so far. The only one who is even close is his team mate Gallopin.
The best young rider award might have been a bit harder, but Nico Schneider's surprising stage win and single day in leaders jersey in Tour de Langkawi was enough for the jury to give him the award.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_1.jpg
Just like in the other cobbled races, Veelers is the man we're planning to work for, but Docker will also be backed up.
De Kort will be a dark horse maybe trying something in the closing kilometers, while Geniez and Kittel are just here to improve their shape for the upcoming Paris-Nice.

* Veelers, Rosseler, Hulsmans

Staf Scheirlinckx has shown very good form recently and is also one of the best cobblers in this race. Should be the man to beat today, but look out for the Landbouwkrediet duo of De Waele and Traksel.

The first half shouldn't provide any difficulties, but when the riders enter the finishing circuit it gets a lot harder. It's a short part that's cobbled, but it's up and down all the time, which will make the riders really tired. Also, the final kilometer is a quite hard uphill sprint which should be really nice to watch.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_2.jpg
When we climbed the short cobbled hill for the third time, Docker accelerated. A small gap appeared almost immediately. No reaction.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_3.jpg
It didn't take a long time until Docker caught the last remnant of the early breakaway, Vichot. His advantage grew really fast and was at this point already over a minute.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_4.jpg
But as he started the cobbled section for the last time he was almost caught. Verandas Willems did most of the work which should mean that Scheirlinckx was feeling good.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_5.jpg
No attacks on the cobbles, and Docker actually increased the gap up to him. Veelers was a great team mate, just guarding Scheirlinckx.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_6.jpg
But it still wasn't enough as De Waele brought Docker back with just a few kilometers left. Too bad for us.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_7.jpg
A moment of inattention from Veelers was used by Scheirlinckx. The Belgian put in a powerful attack just 4 kilometers from the line. Veelers realised the danger and went after him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_8.jpg
Veelers managed to latch onto Scheirlinckx's wheel, but Dominique Rollin were coming up alongside him with tremendous speed. Also Hunt and Pardini were coming really fast from behind. This was going to be a great finish.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/ls_9.jpg
In the final kilometer, De Waele came back from behind to pick up a well-deserved victory, with Rollin just edging out Hulsmans for second. Veelers tired out after bringing back Scheirlinckx but hung on to a 6th place.

Another race on cobbles, another race where Veelers is our first man. De Backer and Curvers will also have protected roles and will most likely try a surprising move or two.
Chaigneau, Ji, Han and Van Zandbeek will back them up, while Fröhlinger is only here to build up form for other races.

* Millar, Phinney, Sergent

After beating everyone, including Veelers, in the last cobbled race, Bert De Waele is starting here as the favourite,
Veelers and Rosseler are the best cobblers besides De Waele and should therefore be his main challengers. Both will probably get an advantage in the prologue, and who knows if it might be enough to hold De Waele behind in the overall?

Report from the prologue coming up in a few minutes so stay tuned!

Stage 1
Middelkerke
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1.jpg
The first of the three days provides a short prologue to create some time gaps between the riders. It's not that short actually, and the gaps can become bigger than you expect. Veelers will do his best to get an advantage over De Waele going into the other stages.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_1.jpg
Radioshack's talented youngster Jesse Sergent was the first one to set a notable time, beating all the earlier ones by quite a large margin.
9'35

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_2.jpg
Sergent's time was obviously very good, since even American timetrial champion David Zabriskie was slower than his countryman.
9'41

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_3.jpg
Pre-race favourite Bert De Waele was expected to limit his losses today, but actually did pretty well.
9'44

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_4.jpg
Brett Lancaster was another favourite for today, but he wasn't able to beat either Sergent or his team mate Zabriskie.
9'42

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_5.jpg
Rick Flens then? Wow, good time by the Dutchman, but a few hundreds slower than Sergent.
9'35

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_6.jpg
Surprisngly strong ride by Jens Keukeleire, but not enough to take the lead from Sergent.
9'37

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_7.jpg
Another strong time coming in. Kristof Vandewalle matching Sergent and Flens, but not fast enough.
9'35

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_8.jpg
Strong ride from Bobbie Traksel too, but once again not fast enough.
9'37

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_9.jpg
Taylor Phinney now, this must be a new best time. No! He can't match fellow American Sergent and is even one second slower than him.
9'36

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_10.jpg
Finally, a new best time! Dutch champ Jos Van Emden with an amazing ride, surpassing Sergent by a massive 7 seconds! Wow.
9'27

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_11.jpg
Can Sergent's team mate Rosseler at least secure a victory for the team? No. He is fast, but not as fast as Van Emden.
9'31

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_12.jpg
Last man who might challenge Van Emden today, David Millar. He clocks a good time, but he's 6s slower than Van Emden!
9'33

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_1_13.jpg
Last man out on the course is Veelers. Can he surprise? He hits the line on a good time, but as the others he can't match the amazing ride of Van Emden. 7th place for Veelers.

+ 1, Veelers did well here and now has a good chance for a decent overall thanks to his sprint-skills Smile

Thanks tsmoha and baia. It was indeed a good ride by Veelers.

Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen

Stage 2
Brugge - Bellegem
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2.jpg
Should be a very interesting stage. A few cobbled sections placed along the route with the last one coming just ten kilometers from the finish line. A strong attack there can definitely hold all the way. You'll have to have some energy left for the last kilometer though, since it's quite steep. As I said, should be interesting.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_1.jpg
A large breakaway group got away early, with some riders in it sitting quite close to Van Emden in the overall. This resulted in that Rabobank was at the front the whole stage to keep their advantage at a reasonable level.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_2.jpg
The most exciting thing that happened in the first part of the stage was that 6th placed overall Kristof Vandewalle punctured. For a moment it looked like he wasn't going to come back, but with help from three team mates he made it.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_3.jpg
An interesting move happened with about 100 km's to go, as Landbouwkrediet sent away Barbé. Maybe to help De Waele later?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_4.jpg
We didn't want him to do "a De Kort" so we sent up a few riders to help Rabo in the chase after the Belgian.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_5.jpg
Barbé was stronger than expected though and increased his advantage. Seeing this as a good opportunity, Verandas sent De Vocht in pursuit after his countryman. Later helper for Scheirlinckx?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_6.jpg
We didn't like the situation, so we sent up Chaigneau and Van Zandbeek too. This proved to be enough as we caught the two escapees along with the early breakaway quite fast.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_7.jpg
Just after we left the final cobbled section, we went for it. De Backer put in a powerful attack and was countered by his captain Veelers. No one else followed and the duo quickly gained 30 seconds to the rest of the peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_8.jpg
Behind there was no organized chase. FDJ was trying to set up Hutarovich for the final sprint, but the pace was far from high enough. The yellow jersey was defending himself very well, sitting just behind the two FDJ riders.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_9.jpg
Scheirlinckx realised the danger and punched away on a small uphill just 5 km's from the line, covered by Rosseler in the points jersey.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_10.jpg
They managed to catch De Backer and Veelers, but just as they did, Veelers punched again. The power in this move was just amazing and he flied away from everyone else.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_11.jpg
Landbouwkrediet lead the charge behind trying to set up De Waele for the sprint. Also there was Keukeleire and Rosseler.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_12.jpg
But it was far too late for everyone as Veelers crossed the line solo. Another great win for us, this time mainly because of his great daily form (+4).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_2_13.jpg
The Landbouwkrediet duo of Traksel and De Waele picked up the other two podium spots and the bonus seconds. 30 seconds had already gone since Veelers crossed the line, which means Veelers in yellow tomorrow.
