Nice to see you've kept the top-10 place with Ardila, although he fell some places. Not surprising though, so it was a positive result.
+ 1. Good job!

@Freitas / tsmoha: Thanks! Indeed it was expected that he would lose some positions. I'm still happy with his overall result.
CountArach: Thank you!
22.02.2011 - 27.02.2011: Giro di Sardegna
Colombia es Pasión - Squad
Alex Cano Ardila
Luis Felipe Laverde
Victor Hugo Peña
Juan Pablo Forero
Carlos Martinez
Camilo Suárez
Hugo Salazar
Wilmar Perez
We are sending a very strong team to race here in Sardinia. Alex is in a good shape, so he will be our leader, aiming for a Top 5 overall. He will get strong backup from Laverde and Peña to achieve his goal. Forero will be trying to get a stage win or two out of the mass sprints. Our four strongest riders will also be assisted by Martinez, Suárez, Salazar and Perez. We hope that our strong lineup will give us some good results out of this race.
Favourites:
Joaquím Rodríguez | Katusha Team
J Rod is definitely the strongest climber in this race. That favours his chances of a good result here, since the race is really hard with much climbing. His good sprint gives him a good chance of getting some bonus seconds on the lesser hard stages with an uphill finish. Also, he will be extremely dangerous here, since there is no time-trial in this race.
Stefano Garzelli | Acqua & Sapone
Garzelli is quite similar to Rodríguez in his riding style. He is also a good climber with a fast finish, which gives you a big favour in this race. Garzelli's biggest weakness here is definitely his team. While Rodríguez has for example Di Luca with him, Garzelli doesn't have any strong climber or puncheur. However, if his form is good, Garzelli is definitely a big threat for the overall here in his home country.
Dario Cataldo | Quickstep Cycling Team
Cataldo isn't the most renowned rider on the startline here, but since he is racing on home ground he will no doubt be a man to watch. The Italian isn't even one of the Top 5 best climbers here, but who knows if he can pull of a surprise. The hard second stage favours him, as he can probably gain some time on his oure puncheur rivals, like Visconti.

23.02.2011: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 1
Olbia - Bornova: 144.1km
The organisers of this race obviously doesn't want to give the riders a comfortable start. This stage is a very hard one, covering two steep climbs. The first one probably won't do any selection between the favourites, but there might be some fireworks on the second one. After the top of that climb there is a downhill and then a flat part towards the finish in Bornova. The final three kilometres is slightly uphill (5%), so a tired rider might lose quite much time to the others just on that final kickup.
As always there was a lot of attacks early on. We tried to get one of our riders in the breakaway too.
Our plan successed. Carlos Martinez managed to get into the breakaway together with five other riders: D'Andrea (Farnese), Sherdyk (ISD Conti), Barla (Androni), Sanderson (Amore) and Brändle (Geox).
Martinez raised the pace up the first climb to get some KoM points. That pace was too high for Sanderson, who lost contact with his companions.
The pack also splitted on the same climb. Russian champion Kolobnev (Katusha) set a very high pace which only 50 riders could follow. Luckily all of our riders were able to stay in contact.
The pack continued to keep a high pace and the breakaway was caught even before we started the second KoM climb. Hollenstein (Vorarlberg) attacked at the foot of the climb and created a nice gap. The picture lies to you, as the gap looks small because of the steep gradient.
Hollenstein was brought back soon afterwards, though and even got dropped when Peña raised the pace in the pack. That really created a big selection. Only 15 riders were left in the group, including three Colombia riders.
Close to the top of the climb Alex attacked. The only one who could follow was race favourite Joaquím Rodríguez. They quickly created a gap of almost a minute back to what was left of the peloton.
On the descent they were joined by Zabriskie (Garmin), Cataldo (Quickstep) and surprisingly Kolobnev, who had been at the front the whole day. Behind them there was a big gap back to the next group, which included Laverde and Peña.
The leading group held together to the final hill, when Zabriskie attacked. Rodríguez and Alex quickly followed him.
Rodríguez blew past Zabriskie and started the sprint from the front. Alex managed to get onto his wheel, but he was a little bit tired after responding to the attack.
Alex did everything he could, but Rodríguez was too strong for him. Still a nice second place for Alex. Zabriskie just hung on to take third ahead of Cataldo. Peña and Laverde also did well today, finishing 7th and 11th respectively. A good day for our team today.

24.02.2011: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 2
Macomer - Nuoro: 169.3km
The race continues with another very hard stage. The first half of the stage is quite hard, covering many smaller climbs, while the second half is mostly flat, except the final 10 kilometres, where the riders will be climbing up to Monte Ortobene, just outside Nuoro. The climb is very steep and quite long, so we will definitely see some action there.
Peña pushed up the pace a lot as soon as we started the final climb. Alex followed on his wheel, having a great day (+5). None of the other favourites responded, so the Colombia duo rode away from the others.
It took some time before the others realised the danger. Italian champion Visconti was the first one to attack from the pack to try and bridge up to Alex, who had dropped Peña.
Alex still held a nice gap when he entered the final kilometer. JRod and Cataldo had caught Visconti, while Zabriskie, Gadret and Garzelli was trying to get across too.
The others never came close. Alex was just too strong for them today. Thanks to this performance, Alex also moves into the race lead now. A great day for him and the team.
Visconti held off Purito to take second behind Alex. Peña and Laverde were dropped earlier and lost some time today. Peña managed to hang on into the Top 10, though.

Stage 1 was already very good for you being in the first group.
But 2nd stage of course much better. Big win there. |

It's no easy following Purito... he is really strong in hills and mountains too!!
A great result for Alex I think!
Good luck in next days!
Stage 2

@all: Thanks a lot!
25.02.2011: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 3
Nuoro - Oristano: 206.4km
Stage 3 is the first chance for the sprinters here on Sardinia. The first half of the stage is quite hilly, but the second half shouldn't provide any difficulties for anyone. This stage probably end up in a battle between the sprinters.
We tried to set up a train for Forero in the final kilometres and succeeded. Peña moved to the front and challenged the Lampre train with Hondo and Petacchi.
Our train was stronger than Lampre's, so Petacchi decided to follow us instead. Ardila started his leadout with two kilometres left, followed by Forero, Bozic and Petacchi.
In the end it was Bozic who took the win ahead of Frapporti, who came up from nowhere. Forero finished third, just ahead of Petacchi.

The team is showing really strong in Italy. Do you think you can hold the leader jersey to the end? |

I think he can, because if I'm not wrong there will only be 2 more flat stages. Hope you can confirm this.
Ardila was spectacular. Keep on going. |

@VladuuTs: Thanks! Petacchi isn't in top shape I guess.
@ricotero / Freitas: This stage is classified as hilly, but it isn't that hard anyway. I don't think it will be any problem to keep the leaders jersey.
26.02.2011: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 4
Carbonia - Iglesias: 178.3km
The stage is set as hilly, but it isn't very difficult. The only things that could provide some problems is the two climbs in the second half of the stage. However, those climbs isn't very hard, so there probably won't be any big selections on them. Danilo Hondo won this stage irl. That says a lot about it's difficulty.
Laverde (12th overall) joined the breakaway today, which as you can see caused some consequences. The pack always kept the break at a reasonable distance.
I just had to post this wonderful screenshot.
Laverde quickly got rid of his breakaway companions on the day's first KoM climb. The pack was still not far behind, so it didn't look good for Laverde.
Unfortunately, the peloton caught Laverde already at the bottom of the final climb. We still had Ardila and Peña in the group, but the rest of our riders had been dropped.
Garzelli and Nocentini attacked from the small leading group at the top of the climb, but couldn't get any big advantage to the others in the group. The climb was much harder than expected and even Peña lost contact with the group.
On the descent more riders tried their luck. This time it was more dangerous riders in the shape of Zabriskie, Rodríguez and Gadret. Fortunately, they couldn't get any bigger gap and was brought back soon afterwards.
On the small hill close to the finish we got some more attacks. This time it was Italian champion Visconti who tried, followed by Rodríguez and Cataldo. Alex had nothing to answer with. Luckily, the attackers was once again brought back quickly.
It all came down to a sprint between the riders in the small front group. Thomas De Gendt was the fastest and won the stage easily ahead of Zabriskie and Visconti. Alex didn't have a great day but still managed a Top 10.

Stage 5
Sant'Antioco - Cagliari
A flat stage to round off this race. The overall is already decided, so the favourites will just sit back and watch as the sprinters battle it out for a stage win. Will it be another victorious day for Bozic today?
Terrific weather at the start in Sant'Antioco, just by the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Laverde joined the breakaway today to give it one last try for a stage win. He got accompanied by 11 other riders, with David Millar being the most renowned.
Millar attacked in the last 10 km, bringing five of the other breakaway riders with him. However, they never had the even the slightest chance to stay clear and was caught just after the final intermediate sprint.
Once again it was Peña who tried to put Ardila and Forero in a good position. However, this time it was Colnago who managed the best train, putting their man Manuel Belletti in a good position.
In the sprint it was Garmin's Julian Dean who was the fastest with Ravard (AG2R) and Ongarato (Vacansoleil) completing the podium. Forero didn't have the necessary speed in the end and finished 6th.

28.02.2011: Classica Sarda Sassari
Colombia es Pasión - Squad:
Luis Felipe Laverde
Dalivier Ospina
Robinson Chalapud
Camilo Suárez
Wilmar Pérez
Hugo Salazar
Carlos Martínez
Juan Villegas
After showing good shape in Giro di Sardegna, Laverde gets to lead the team here on the second Sardinian race this week. Ospina will be his main helper, since he is our second strongest rider here. The rest will, as always act as domestiques. All the team is in good shape, so we hope for a good result here. The goal is Top 5 with Laverde.
Favourites:
José Rujano | Androni Giocattoli - C.I.P.I.
Rujano is much better on long, steep climbs, but because of the very weak startlist, he has to be rated as the big favourite. The Venezuelan is one of the best climbers in the world and is quite passable in hilly races too. Gianni Savio obviously believes Rujano can do something good here, as he has sent a very strong team with Rujano to help him.
Mauro Finetto | Liquigas - Cannondale
I would have rated Finetto as the big favourite here if it wasn't for one reason. Liquigas has only sent three other riders to help Finetto here. That is a big weakness for the Italian. However, even without a full team to back him up, Finetto is capable of fighting for the win. His major ace is that he is both strong on the hills and fast in the sprint. If the other riders brings Finetto to the finish in the front group, he'll win.
Murilo Fischer | Team Garmin - Cervélo
Fischer is the same type of rider as Finetto. A good puncheur with a fast sprint to finish with. The difference between Finetto and Fischer that gives Finetto an advantage is that the Italian is better in both things. Whatsoever, you should not underestimate Fischer's chances of winning if he is still in the front group in the end.

28.02.2011: Classica Sarda Sassari
Barumini - Chiaramonti: 194.5km
We stay here in Sardinia for one more race, this time a one-day classic. Classica Sarda Sassari covers almost 200 kilometres, starting in Barumini before riding a hilly course towards the finish line in the small town of Chiaramonti. The final ten kilometres is uphill almost all the way, so we will probably see some selection there.
The fantastic weather continues on Sardinia today. The wind was very hard today, so we moved our team to the front already from the start to prevent losing contact in a split.
As always, we had a small group breaking clear of the pack early. This time it was formed by six riders: Moldovan champion Pliuschin (Katusha), Righi (Lampre), Lemarchand (AG2R), Graziato (Farnese), Arndt (Brandenburg) and Rinker (Atlas).
In the pack, it was Androni Giocattoli and Acqua & Sapone who had some riders at the front keeping the breakaway at a reasonable distance.
With 80 km left, Eros Capecchi (Liquigas) attacked from the pack. This was very early to try to go for a solo win.
Capecchi quickly caught the breakaway and moved to the front of it. The gap back to the pack was about two minutes, so no panic so far.
Capecchi dropped the breakaway riders and increased the gap back to the peloton. He was now four minutes ahead, but there was still a long way to go.
When Capecchi started the final climb he had built up an incredible gap of six minutes! The Italian was obviously having a fantastic day.
This was worrying many riders in the pack. Solari (Androni) attacked on the descent to the final climb together with Rolland (Europcar).
Seven kilometres from the line, Laverde decided to go. He quickly got a small gap back to the rest, but Rolland and Miholjevic (Acqua & Sapone) went after him.
They were not going to get even close to Capecchi, though. He really deserved the win after his amazing solo ride over the last 80 kilometres. We can just congratulate Capecchi for this win.
In the sprint for second place, Gautier (Europcar) caught and passed a tired Laverde to grab second. Laverde managed to just hang on to take the last podium spot ahead of Dall'Antonia (Liquigas). A good day for us, as Ospina also performed well, finishing 6th.
