Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca - Stage 3
Inca - Inca
The Trofeo Inca is the first hilly stage of the Mallorca Challenge but probably the easiest of the three. We will try to keep the peloton together, and finish with Uran and Knees in the leading group. Uran will try to fight it out for podium place as well. Also today we will see the main GC competitors, and who should be wary about.
Sunny depart in Inca.
The first attack today, is probably the most surprising we are going to see today. L.L. Sanchez decides to attack, Barry counter attacks him, to collect KOM points, as tomorrow stage doesn’t have any to offer.
It doesn’t usually happen, but today the first break of the day made it, the gap is over a minute, there is a lot of activity in peloton as more riders try to break.
38km cycled, the first intermediate sprint is won by Michael Barry, who is doinf the highest pace in the break as so far the gap didn’t rise at all and is about a minute.
Leopard-Trek is doing very high pace and the break is now only 38” from the peloton, will they survive? L.L.Sanchez joins forces with Barry and sets the tempo of the break.
And at last, 90km to go, Leopard stops the crazy tempo, but stills lead the peloton, the gap rises to 1’35” but never gets bigger than 2 minutes, partially due to Sanchez being in the break.
At the 85km mark, Van Summeren attacks, he lost over four minutes yesterday, so he will try to win some time today. This day is getting stranger, Van den Broeck, Kolobnev and Moncoutie attacked. They didn’t loose any time and are in contention for overall. Do they think Leopard would let them break? We obviously don’t counter those attacks, as it far too early in the race.
Second intermediate sprint, the gap is reaches it highest today of around 1 minute to the Kolobnev, Van den Broeck group and another minute on the peloton.
Leopard-Trek pace is so fast, the 4 late breakaway riders are ought to be caught very soon.
Only a minute now, and the peloton will reach the breakaway, we now the break will be caught before the second KOM point, so Barry gives his all to win this point.
The break survives, just. We are very happy with Barry’s effort, and he will definitely attack on the last stage. The KOM jersey is secured for this stage, though winner of second mountain finish will be only off 4 points to Barry, so the stage 5 will decide it all.
The break was caught at the 40km, all of our riders are in front, but Knees daily form doesn’t bode well for us, he has stomach pains and a daily form of -4.
2.5km to go, and the split has happened. Riders like Robert Gesink, Philippe Gilbert, Simon Spilak and Andreas Kloden didn’t make it to the first group. Knees now with massive problems to stay in the front group.
Close to the mountain finish and only 14 riders in the group, surprisingly the strong Katusha team did disappoint with only Rodriguez in the group. Same with Leopard, only Schleck hanging on. Unfortunately for us Knees couldn’t stay at the front. And is now in the second group with all the other favourites almost 1’30” behind.
The decent begins, the group is definitely not going to be caught by the 31men strong peloton.
You not gonna see it often but Gesink leads the peloton on the decent, lots of big favourites will miss out today, and the biggest is Philippe Gilbert who really disappointed today, along two other Russian riders.
3.5km to go, and Uran in a bad position, we will try to ‘catch the best wheel possible’, but the podium looks unlikely. Vino in a good position, he might be the favourite to take it.
2.8km to go and Uran showed his fighting sprit and took the wheel of Paulinho. Kessiakoff leads-out Vinokourov who looks in prime position to take the stage win.
But, no it is the Canadian sensation Ryder Hesjedal who takes the 3rd stage in Mallorca. Carlos Barredo takes great second for him, and now Sanchez will expect to work for him on the last two stages, Andy Schleck completes the podium. Uran surprisingly finished 5th, which I wouldn’t think form the sprint photo-finish, but we are happy. We expected slightly more today, but as you probably could see Kessiakoff and Vino didn’t even try to sprint, leaving Uran, in a bad position to sprint from.
The second big group cames 3 minutrs down, and that includes our rider Knees, along the other favourites.
Well done by Barry saving the KoM jersey.
Also great for URan, who finished in the first group. Next 2 stages are harder and will decide the race much more.
Knees in 2nd group is also around many great riders, so no shame
Luckily tomorrow is a 'no points' day, so we will let him recover and attack at the last stage, hopefullu Barry will pull it off.
Uran is doing great, for tomorrow race his fitness will be 74, anc Knees will lead him out hopefully better tham Astana today Podium would be nice, and especially the bonus seconds

Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca - Stage 4
Deia – Deia
The stage is reasonably easy till the long climb, many rides will be dropped and the stage will show the favourites for the queen stage tomorrow. The last climb before the finish may prove deciding, and Uran will try to attack there.
Team objectives :
- Protect Uran/Knees
- Top 3 with Uran
Favourites: R.Hesjedal, A.Schleck, Alexandre Vinokourov My secret tip: R.Hesjedal impressed on the last stage, and I can’t see anybody else winning this stage.
The hilly depart in Deia.
Knees leads the pack, strongly supported by his fans.
The first rider to go is M.Ortega, many riders follow, this stage be a success if the break works together, so especially today Garmin might work to defend the leader’s jersey.
Nocentini and Gasparatto attack on the downhill section, will the peloton let them go ?
The breakawat establishes at the 100km mark, nobody very dangerous except Swiss champion, Martin Elmiger, who lost a lot of time of yesterday stage and now is not the threat to the overall.
70k to go and the break have a advantage of 4’43” on the peloton. With Garmin upping the pace, the chances of breakaway win are slim.
50km mark and the climbing starts, the lead is gradually decreasing but still over 3minutes.
The climbing just began but already the breakaway is falling apart, with both riders from Rota dos Móveis going backwards.
The same story continues in the peloton, which is reduced to only 56 riders in matters of minutes.
The breakaway lead decreased immediately and now is only 1’30” over the pack.
The first half of the climbing is done, now the decent and second, steeper half will begin, where we are expecting some attacks from the favourites. Peloton for the first time in long time can see the breakway.
The breakaway is caught, 3km of climbing to be done before the long decent. Will somebody attack?
Surprisingly no move by anybody, the leading pack is only 11 riders strong, including all favourites, and surprisingly Thor Hushovd.
10km to go, nobody will catch this group now, Leopard and Rabobank controls the tempo, and let nobody let away.
7km to and a massive disaster, Andy Schleck, John Gadret and Carlos Barredo have falled. They seem ok to continue on.
Now, the hard part for Leopard and Rabobank, all of their riders stop and wait to help their team captains. A sacrifice that needs to be made. Robert Gesink has his own problems as well.
The crash left many stunned, and us as well, its distracted me slightly and Uran was now at the back of peloton, so we couldn’t attack.
Andy Schleck can’t wait longer and attacks at 6km mark, will he get back to the leading group ?
Yes, he can. Though Rababank decision was a massive mistake, now their three riders are one minute behind.
3.5km to go and our position isn’t brilliant, Knees will lead-out Uran, the train to the right looks most likely to win, and Hushovd is leading out Hesjedal perfectly, he is most likely to win, second time in a row.
2.8km to go and Knees is ‘dead’. We will try to switch to Hesjedal train, but all is too late.
No problems at all, Hesjedal wins second time in a row, with the bonuses he extends his lead over the rest. Uran makes the sixth and I can’t tell you how disappointed I am, the last hill looked perfect for the attack, and we couldn’t use it. Also we have disappointed in the sprint, a bad day overall, but hopefully the last stage will be better.

U25: Rigoberto Urán Team: Garmin-Cervelo
Edited by Alakagom on 11-02-2011 10:27
Good stage report...
Urán did good,he managed to finish in same winner group,he´s 4th in GC,that´s a great result if he manage to finish at least top5...good luck for the last one.
Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca - Stage 5
Magalluf - Palmanova
The Trofeo Magalluf is a very hilly one again. The climbs aren’t that long but all over the stage. As on the last two stages we should see small favourites group finish the race, as the last 5km ends with decent, good downhiller should win. I can’t see anybody challenging Hesjedal, but how will the race progress.
Team objectives:
- Protect Urán/Knees
- Top 10 Urán
Favourites: R.Hesjedal, A.Schleck, Alexandre Vinokourov My secret tip: Thor Hushvod impressed yesterday, and as he is a master of downhilling, he stands a chance against his team-mate.
The last depart in this year Tour of Mallorca.
His attack yesterday failed, and now he is out of contention completely, Gasparatto at least wants to win a stage.
As the breakaway was beginning to establish, it was Barry time to attack and win the King Of the Mountains jersey.
And the breakaway establishes, it’s 10km to the first KOM and the group has two minutes advantages, it looks good for Barry.
And Barry takes very important 10 points, Gasparatto comes second. The pace by Barry was quite high, as the peloton closed down on us, in the end only 2 riders stayed from the original breakaway, rest were caught.
Unfortunately, after great effort by Barry, Gasparatto attacked and we couldn’t counter attack him. He will fight now to survive till the second KOM points which is 20km away.
20km to go and both Omega riders attacked and joined Barry. One of them Pihilippe Gilbert, who had very surprisingly disappointing start to his new season. Would Barry could hold to them?
No surprise, Philippe Gilbert decided to attack and already joined Gasparatto at the top, with 7km of climbing to be done, though there is good news, Barry dropped second Omega rider Réyenes, if Barry could survive he would get another precious 6 points to the classification.
Philippe Gilbert takes maximum points, with a valiant effort Barry just survived and got the third place, shortly afterwards he was caught.
Now only Philippe Gilbert at the front, he has 2’22” minutes of advantage, and the third and steepest climb of the day begins, by my quick calculations, Gilbert if wins the next three mountain sprints, giving him additional 30 points, which would meant he would win the KOM jersey, now the Sky team was praying for the miracle to happen.
Not believing what is happening, luck was turning on us, Robert Gesink decided to attack at 5km to go the to could he catch Gilbert ?
Yes, he could. I couldn’t believe that along with Barry for few ‘paused’ minutes, Gesink reduced the two minutes of advantage Gilbert had and already is dropping the Belgian.
The climb reduced the peloton to meek 44 riders, we had 4 riders here so we felt confident about our chances.
Luckily for us Gesink dropped Gilbert quite easily and was heading to win the second last KOM point today. If no disaster happened now, Barry is unofficially the winner of Mountain Classification Ranking 2011 in Mallorca.
Andy Schleck and Vino tried few attacks but were unsuccessful, Garmin was doing brilliant job and Gesink lead was decreasing, making it sure Hesjedal had a chance to do a triple.
20km to go and Gesink has lead of 2 minutes on peloton, could he cause an upset today?
Again Vino attacked, but this time Hesjedal countered him, though they were caught soon after.
This is gonna be a close call, Gesink with 10km to go has one minute advantage, but the peloton can already see him in the distance.
Unfortunately for the Dutch man, he was caught 4.4km to go. Brave effort by him, he showed great strength today, and showed today, the fall on first stage didn’t affect him at all.
The sprint begins, and no chances for us today, because of the last 8km being decent, Urán was at the back and blocked. Hesjedal looking good for the triple.
No problems at all, he takes it easily, unfortunately for us Vino takes second meaning he gets bonus seconds and will surpass Urán in the overall, same with Joaquím Rodríguez.

Hesjedal season couldn’t begin better, winning three stages and taking both overall and points jerseys. Urán dropped from 4th to the 6th due to Alexandre Vinokourov and Joaquím Rodriguez gaining bonus second on us. Though we are disappointed, hoping for the podium place with Urán, he was very consistent throughput always being at the front. He showed maturity, and we hope he will have more luck in the next races.
Knees finished 15th overall, we hoped for Top10, though all chances for that ended on stage 2 with a daily form of -4, and being dropped by leading group. He then showed great helping skills, and gained time on others to finish in respectable 15th. Overall we are quite pleased, but not as we hoped for.

Hesejdal took the Points Jersey with ease, Urán third position, proves how consistent he was, and he should be happy how he did in his debut for team Sky.

This is the classification Sky is very proud about, Michael Barry, the veteran in our team, showed great skills and at the end beat Philippe Gilbert by two points. His efforts throughout were valiant, and he is a very deserved winner.

Urán the debutant in Sky ranks, and takes the jersey he wanted to win at the start. He will try to win this jersey in lots of stage races he will participate. Great effort by him.
