Qatar Optics - Duvel 2021: Story Completed
duxili
I gues you're right.

But I was so hopeful for the Vuelta Wink

Winning WC ITT is great so not only the start of the season was good

Nice signing. Could you provide with the full list of your riders? With all these movements, it is becoming hard to remembers Pfft

Just some pieces of information surrounding the team in some way...

- The 'All Moldovan' team will not be formed. Before I mentioned that our former rider, Truhanov, would be setting up an all Moldovan team after winning the Moldovan lottery, this is no longer the case. The UCI have blocked the move and rumours suggest the lottery winnings have already run out! Sad news as the team were provisionally invited to the tour of Qatar and they already had a strip.

- After a disappointing season we have parted company with Brice Feillu, who had one year left on his contract.

- Al Sulimani will be riding for us next season after we bought him out of his contract with Nippo. Team Nippo are already investing in their team by hiring some renown scouts/ coaches to help the team progress.

- The team currently stands at around 24 riders including some recent Belgian/Qatar free agent additions to the squad. We are seeking at least 3 more riders to join the squad to cope with the demands of a WT schedule.

- 2021 will be the first time we have no Spanish riders on the Qatar Optics squad.

- Finally.... I have been spending a lot of time with Jun Lee and Jelly-Sun (now 2 years old) back in Antwerp. Speaking of housekeeping, it is killing me!

@ Ian Butler - If only we could get rid of that pasty looking neck! Wink

@ Shonak - We are glad to have him. An icon in Belgium and revered by some in Qatar, I doubt he can win another Flanders, but his addition to the team is huge! Smile

@ duxili - Thanks. On Christmas Eve, season 5 will start up. As with every season start the whole team will be introduced. Wink

Welcome to the new season!

Compared to when I started my endeavours into management in 2012 it really is a different world now. Aside from the technological breakthroughs the cycling world is vastly different, many different races occupy the calendar and hardly any faces from 2012 survive.

I am really excited about how this Qatar project is progressing. Each generation of riders coming out of Qatar seems to be more gifted than the next. Though we are just starting season 5 I have never been more excited to be a part of this project.

The Big Goal:

Qatar Optics have confirmed that, at the end of the season, they will be withdrawing from being the dominant sponsor of the team. Duvel, our new co-sponsors, may well be tempted to take the reigns of the team next season if we achieve our target of avoiding relegation.

We started this journey with three main goals.....

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/abc1_zpsb25a1145.jpg

.........after completing two of these goals we aim to complete this quest this season by achieving the big daddy of the goals 'to start a GT with at least 7 Qataris'.

Our new jersey for the season:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/570a_zps1eb5e352.jpg

This jersey will be the temporary jersey to start us off for the season, afterwards you are right to expect a new jersey for Qatar Optics - Duvel.

As I say I can't wait for the season to begin. Classics in Wales and England and multiple races in New Zealand, USA, Scandinavia and Greece have been added to the bulging calender. We start off on the 13th January at the 'GP Hawkes Bay' and I can't wait!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/A2_zps069d1ca4.jpg

We can expect a season which is in stark contrast to last season when we topped the WT rankings. We will be scraping to avoid relegation by the looks of it, chiefly because we don't have any established GC men and the races in which Kritskiy competes for victory don't offer up many WT points.

The Andorran, Cartillo, needs to put in a good classics campaign for us. He worked for Gallopin last year and now it is his time to shine.

The New additions:

Tom Boonen:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/b3_zpsd35ad520.jpg

After retiring in 2019 and managing a Belgian continental team in 2020 we are glad to bring the record 5* winner of Paris Roubaix and the tour of Flanders out of retirement. He may not be able to win another big classic but his presence both in the spotlight and around the team is invaluable.

Y Al Ghanim:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/b9_zps9da134b8.jpg

The younger brother of Ahmed Al Ghanim sure looks to be some rider. A fantastic person with a knack for steep hills is a great combination.

A Al Mehalel:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/B2_zps0dc25851.jpg

This Omani rider resembles the traditional hardman flat rider. Keep and eye on this guy.

A Al Muwalid:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/b10_zps8d7adb70.jpg

The older broth of Ali Sanad. Good for some domestique duties.

A Al Sulimani:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/B1_zps43cad6cf.jpg

Without doubt Al Sulimani is the most successful rider Qatar has produced yet. He has taken multiple wins at continental level and has shown well in Italian semi classics and, of course, showed very well in the 2020 world champs.

V de Ridder:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/b4_zps4c610a9a.jpg

This Belgian will be a solid domestique for us. He has previously ridden for Youtube and has some Cyclocross under his belt.

Other additions include the 2013 WTT champion, Rosseler, and the 2015 WRR champion, Impey. Not forgetting several Belgian domestiques whom we acquired from the free agency and Marzouki, who was at our continental team last season. We didn't intend to sign the Tunisian but we are glad he fills up another space in the squad.

Staff:

All of the coaches are the same, but we have a new doctor and scouts.

The main regions in which we will be racing this year are: Qatar, Belgium, New Zealand and USA. The reason for this is chiefly the requirements of Qatar Optics and Duvel Bier. The sponsor goals are quite challenging but by no means impossible, even though some goals are in races we weren't planning to race we will do as we need to keep a good relationship with the sponsors and Duvel in particular this year.

I wasn't able to attend this race in New Zealand as it stared on the same date as the start of the tour of Qatar, 13th Jan. Many riders are either in Qatar on training camps so we could only send 6 of our domestiques... Ponzi continued where he left off last season and wins the first non NC race of the season.

This year the January temperatures in Qatar have been through the roof. This has pre-empted many FIFA officials to call off the world cup in the winter of 2022. But us guys are made of much sterner stuff so the tour of Qatar goes ahead.

However, the overwhelming heat has been a bit too much for some so a reduced start list is present. With the extreme heat, Sven Nys (who manages our continental team), thought it best not to bring our continental team to the start line.

Aside from the opening stage prologue (where Sulimani should be a favourite) we have very hopes for the flat stages. I don't really see any competition to phase the our Turkish champ, Yildiz, for stages 2-6.

@ Ian Butler - I agree. Smile How can the five time winner of Paris Roubaix and Flanders be a bad thing for the team? Wink

@ Krisa - He is fitting in well at the moment. Let's hope he doesn't get power hungry and take over the management of the team himself!!! Wink

Lets hope for a good home tour Wink

Shonak
Awesome team & season presentation. Quite excited for some riders, on top of all Boonen of course, but also Al Sulimani. Valentin de Ridder - lulz, great name. Wink That guy has some massive capabilities in terms on flat stages, can't wait to see him tear up the peloton on windy stages.

Bring it on, The Rider! Banana

Waoo, might not have 7 Qatari riders for a Grand Tour, bu hving a Qatari leader, that is an achievement

Very consistent team, winning will be very hard though...

Sulimani in the heat.

The heat really through up some strange results on the prologue. Including surprise decent results for Al Zaid and non time trial man, Piedra. The winner was the rider from continental team DONG Energy, not a surprise as that team competes heavily on the track in the winter.

We are not even 2 weeks into the season and one of our domestiques is openingly criticizing us....really? The guy should be thankful for us, if it would not be for our late offer he wouldn't even have a contract.

@ duxili = I hope we can scrape 7 up for a GT, it would be great if our Qatari leaders could challenge for some races!

@ Shonak - It will be a hard season. Other than Kritskiy, it will be interesting to see how shines. Wink

@ sutty - Being in mid January and finishing in the top 10 every stage ain't bad. Wink

Monnier takes win no.2!

Yildiz finishes our home tour with his best finish, as ever coming into form at the wrong time. On the final day the severe heat finally abated and the heavens opened. Yildiz should be in better form when we are back in Qatar when we return here for 'Le Classique Sahara'. Morkov takes the overall.

as ever coming into form at the wrong time.

At least, Qatar Optics showed itself at the home race and tried everything to gain a victory. I'm sure the qatari people will be way more proud of Qatar Optics anyway as soon as their riders flood the Grand Tours. Wink

STAGE 6: Adelaide - Adelaide 93 KM's

Boom attacked late on and, after a huge crash which took out many including Al Sulimani, held on for the win. classics man, Salomein, couldn't quite pass his rival as the fighters were allowed to get away. Kump holds on for the GC win.

Impey was our best finisher (20th) and Al Sulimani scored our only WT point here but our best rider had to be C.S.Long, who went out into the break on stages 1,3 and 5.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/534_zpse3e3afc2.jpg

He didn't win every intermediate sprint but he did consistently finish in the top 3 at the sprints and his reward is the points jersey, helped by having no dominant force winning stages! His big target this year is Milan San Remo.

The routes of all the major races in the year have been realised and the TDF route..... is a cake walk! Well it is compared to last year's edition that is. The Giro has the Stelvio and the Vuelta has the I'Angliru and the TDF has noted/ fabled climbs. With Pinot and Elissonde not taking part this TDF could indeed through up a real surprise winner from left field.

Potentially this is great news for our team. As the Qataris may not deem the route to be t00 challenging. Will Qatar invade the 2021 TDF? Quite possible!
