For reference:
Bjarne Riis, Hautacam 1996, 480w
Basso, Monte Bondone, 2006 Giro: 460w
Landis, Alpe d'Huez, 2006 Tour: 440w
Rasmussen and Contador, Plateau de Beille, 2007 Tour: 435w
Sastre, Alpe d'Huez, 2008 Tour: 430w
LeMond, a cyclist tremendously more gifted than any current one, and from "the clean age": 400w
Are you sure you don't mean the stage after alpe d'huez for Landis there!
Interesting and i guess unsurprising reading. Though I feel today no-one was on their really best of best form. That Riis wattage is unbelievable - no wonder he looked completely crazy! |

Nope, the Alpe is right. His "epic" ride 3 days later was all tactics. It was his worst mountains performance from that Tour ("bonk" on the La Toussuire climb excepted)

Ullrich, Col de la Croix de Chaubouret, 1997 Tour - 484watts

Curse my bad memory! Almost like the tour that never was Then again the next year seemed a bit like that also, with Vino/Rasmussen saga. Then I think of Ricco and Sauner Dauvil last year ^^.
Anyways back to the Giro - any other startling wattages - Pantani perhaps? |

Very impressive by Lövkvist today, but he was showing some signs of weakness towards the end there; and I fear that this will result in fairly large time differences on stage 10 and onwards.
I expected him to do well in the first week of the giro as he has done well in some short stage races like Tour de Suisse, Pologne and others. But when it comes to the three week races I just don't think he can hold the same level throughout the whole race... It would be fun if he proved me wrong though |

They thought that of Andy Schleck too.

Looking at Lovkvist, Wiggins and Cunego, I'm going to go with the optimistic route and say "I do believe cycling is cleaner"
I don't believe isso said that. i thought when pigs fly that i would ever hear such a comment from isso.
who here is stoked that horner is doing so well?

None. There's a minimum weight for bikes.
Ha ha
Obscure Teamspeak references FTW!

Andy had never shown anything at all before the Giro, so I very much doubt anyone thought anything like that of him
In fact, I remember that coming into that Giro, Saxo Bank were saying how he and Zabriskie were the team's GC leaders and the objective was that one of them would get a top 20

EDIT: wait...stoked. I read "surprised". I hate Horner in every way imaginable. From everything he's ever said to the camera, I've grown to loathe him.

I honestly don't think the two are comparable. Andy Schleck came like a rocket from nowhere when he got the 2nd place in 07, while Lövkvist has been looked on as a big talent for quite a few years now but hasn't really shown that he can do well in a three week race. He might just get his breakthrough this year tough. |

Turns out the distance and time I used weren't the best.
Here's the wattages from official sources:
Menchov and Basso and co. were at 425watts, not 415.
So, it's still cleaner, but not by as much.

Yes. And they can time and measure it to perfection, while I was working on "guesstimates". So these are accurate values now
Or rather
These values are not....of "normal" riders.

Nice Stage
Interesting to see if Lovkvist is exhausted or not after his impressive effort today...
Rogers had a nice comeback
Lance as i thought not a lot of race days in his legs
Levi Menchov Basso will battle for the 1st spot
Di luca will want a podium place
Sadly i cannot see Sastre in top 5 because of the TT .
I have some doubts about some cyclist again but isso will take care of them so worthless destroying isso a nice topic to bash them
P.S. Gibo and Garzelli they can retire after this Giro they are old fossils on the road and earning big money
