STAGE 3: Men Tou Gou - Yong Ning Town 160 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Duarte(EML) **Kruijswijk(BSC) *Eijssen(RAB)

This is the deciding day for the GC. We have two considerable climbs in the last 30 kilometres before a 9 kilometre descent to the finish. Whoever is on top at the end of the stage will likely win the last WT race of the season.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps731a75eb.jpg

Our domestiques had to put in a lot of effort today.

A quality break got away including Yeray Garcia and Dementyev.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zps7df3939c.jpg

We hit the penultimate climb with 30 kilometres to go and the break at 3'10. Cziraki and Rojas have nothing left so Kritskiy attacks. He quickly passes late attackers, Ponzi and Brambilla and surprisingly catches the break with 3 kilometres still to go on the climb.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zps8210600a.jpg

Only Dementyev can stay with Kritskiy as four riders (Phelan, Majka, Ulissi and Koren) attack across to join the two. Behind the action is over, the selection has been made.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/4_zpsd0a12fc3.jpg

Ulissi and Majka distance the other three before the trio come back to the duo on the short final climb.

Ulissi and Majka attack again over the top of the final climb, despite Kritskiy feeling great he could not go with the in form riders and with 9 kilometres to go he trails the duo by'55.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/5_zps015138bd.jpg

Ulissi takes the win.

He manages to distance the Polish rider in the final and notches up a combative victory. Kritskiy finishes 4th but has to submit his GC lead to Majka. Majka recently won the Settimana Lombarda and his uncharacteristic great prologue shows he is in great form.

Even though less than '20 separate Kritskiy from the lead we only have 2 pan flat stages left so a GC change is very unlikely. These 2 said stages are the last for us this season.

@ Shonak - He is a tank. Wink

@ Krisa - Unlike Vanendert he managed to take a win in rainbow colours, in his first TT after winning the WT as well. Wink

@ Sutty - 2nd and a stage win looks to be a great way to wrap up the racing. Smile

Shonak
I suppose not much could be done against Majka and Ulissi, but 2nd overall would be a great way to finish the season for Kritskiy and the team. Keep at it and don't let your guard down.

by the way: I usually skip Japan Cup & Chrono des Nations too. Wink

It is funny you should mention those two races as they are no longer raced in October (We haven't raced them this season anyway). As I have mixed up the schedule over the seasons.

Japan Cup went from October - January (Now in September)
Chrono des Nations went from October - Jan (Now in August) Wink

Also speaking of races, next year we hope to add:
-- GP Athens
-- Zuri Metzegete
-- Rund um Sebnitz
-- A UK classic (The 2012 Olympic road race route)
-- Races in Slovakia/ Lithuania
-- Some Scandanavian races + more UK races

We won't race all of them but it is nice to mix up the calendar. Wink

Al Zaid is the first to attack on the final stage of the season.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/2_zps07b43ceb.jpg

C.S.Long got into the break. There was a huge torrent of attacks towards the finish but we would end the season with a sprint....

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zps8e166760.jpg

Cavendish takes the win.

Despite losing some of his top end speed we end the season with yet another win for the Manxman.

We end Beijing with a stage win and 2nd place for Kritskiy. A fitting end to a successful season for the team.

@ Shonak - On paper Kritskiy should be a match for those two in the hills, but the others were in better form and are also better up the mountains. Wink

The 2nd place isn't the worst result for the ITT WC. Wink

Shonak
Good last stage race for the team, Kritskiy's late form certainyl came in handy. Cool

'Our continental squad at the end of it's first season.'

The 3 Graduates:

We have three graduates at the end of this season who are 'promoted' from the continental team to our WT team.

Al Asmari:

He has shown himself to be a competent time trialist and has a great persona which will, no doubt, keep up team morale.

Al Sahaf:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/1_zps4ebb6178.jpg

Close sources say this character has a great sprint on him just waiting to be developed.

Sulimani:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/3_zps9da4edf3.jpg

This Omani rider was with us form 2017-2019. After a year at our continental team we are glad to have him back. He is a flat out specialist at short prologues.

@ Miguel - True. Wink The worst result would be last place! Wink

@ Shonak - I'm not too sure it was form, he is just a beast. For sure other riders were in better form. It is always nice to scrape a TT win by '1 second though. Wink

WT rankings:

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/01_zps8fb1e95a.jpg

We only end up topping the WT rankings at the end of the season. Sure we capitulated in the Vuelta and didn't have a stand our TDF. But, we won Paris Nice, Tirreno Adriatico, Classique Sahara, Milan San Remo and finished on the podium in the Vuelta and the Giro. 2020 was the greatest year for Qatar Optics results wise. To top the WT rankings in such style in our first WT year is some achievement.

We didn't have a standout rider in the rankings, instead we had steady contributors. Velo d'or winner, Elissonde, wins the prize for the second straight year and tops the WT rankings thanks largely to winning the TDF supported by a 2nd at the Eneco tour and a 6th place in the Giro. He is not competing in the peloton next season so the field will be open to carry on his good work.

KLM were always seen in the breaks and despite Majka winning the last WT race of the season they are doomed to the continental division next season. After John Deere picked up some WT points in Beijing, Katusha are relegated to the continental division as well. As Katusha had one of the standout GT riders of the century, Pinot, how they managed to get relegated I do not know! Katusha will be replaced by LG next season.

CQ rankings:

Euskaltel Euskadi will be back in the WT after one year in the continental division. They comfortably amassed more CQ points than any other continental team, largely thanks to a very impressive Vuelta performance from Garabay and co.

They will be joined by Giant Berry, lead by Ponzi, they won many races throughout the season and will be riding as United Healthcare in the WT next season.

Continental riders:

Spoiler

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/0001_zpsb5b7007a.jpg

Fastman Ponzi's ability to win sprints and cope with the hills sees him top the continental rankings. For much of the year Bole topped the rankings but he had a quiet second half to the season as did his team, Luxair, who looked a shoe in for promotion early on in the season.

Victories:

This wraps up the 2020 season.

(Now I will do some edits so different races are added. I will also edit the rider files as too many riders decline and even retire at 28 (way too early).) Wink

Great season review, mate. Very enjoyable to read and a nice conclusion to a wonderful season. 2020 was a blast, looking forward to Qatar Optics 2021. Cool

Also about editing stuff: Do you recommend to edit the riders in the teams in off-season, transfer-wise?

Won't make such a difference next year after all: The Russian is winning every thing and no one else does Rolling Eyes

Just days after Abdulatif Al Zaid accidently blabbered to the Qatari press that, next season, the team is to be joined by a statuesque rider coming out of retirement another big event has happened which will make it impossible to keep the surprise a secret....

By now all of the cycling world has no doubt seen the leaked picture which pretty much reveals who our 'statuesque rider coming out of retirement' is ! The secret is out now, so I may as well post the picture right here and now.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b552/riderrider92/55_zps7f4d07b3.jpg

Can anyone keep a secret anymore!

@ Ian Butler - T'was a great season, no doubt about it. Wink

@ duxili - Your posts have taken a very pessimistic tone lately, I'm getting worried about you...... Wink Don't forget the early season successes! Smile

@ Sutty - That is where we finish 2020. (Next season it will be a decent challenge to stay in the WT unless Cartillo the Andorran does a great classics campaign in Flanders. Wink

@ Shonak - I've added a load of stages (Thanks Atlantius). I thought I would change decline ages immensely but I didn't need to. (Always do most of your edits after the season ends between October and December 31st Wink )

... MrUFo and tmr are designing a revamped jersey for 2021 but the racing will likely start using the traditional Qatar Optics jersey with some changes made by Krisa for the first few races. Wink (Thanks Krisa)
