Surprisingly Thomas Riis sets provisional best time on the prologue. Actually so surprising that the photographer hadn’t even showed up yet. It does not last though as A. Roux beats his time by a second.

One for the sprinters it seems.

Pretty much nothing happened the first 95 % of the stage, so we will skip straight to the sprint.

In the Tour we will be aiming for the green jersey with Thor, so we had to practice our sprint train. And it worked perfectly. 1,5 km to go and Jebjerg starts his leadout.

No slow starting today.
Bøchman get in a break, leaves the break behind and crosses the summit alone with a 14-rider group who slowly left of the front of the peloton 1 minute behind. A group containing both Nibali, Basso, Van den Broeck and Löfkvist.

Things get back together but on the second climb Riis takes charge. He doesn’t get far away though.
Similar situation up to the next climb. This time Bøchman gets out in front again taking over the lead in the mountain classification from Thomas.

Ian: He really is! Nearly fell off my chair when he won the prologue! There's a couple of mean ass mountain stages in this variant though so I doubt he is strong enough to compete with Contador/Nibali etc. in the long run. There's quite a lot of rider here, who are better climbers (on paper at least).


I'll probably race through the rest of Suisse fairly quickly as I really want to get to the NC's Wink

It will not be easy to defend the jersey today, but we will do our absolute best!

Today everything is about making sure Thomas is ready for the last mountain. Several other teams won’t allow a breakaway, so with 6 km to the top of the first mountain the peloton is still together.
Kritskiy is pulling with Contador on his wheel while Löfkvist is well protected by teammates right behind.

Well you know us – we never let a good mountain sprint slip away so Bøchman takes over the last 2,5 km pulling hard enough to discourage any attacking, taking the summit ahead of Thomas and reducing the peloton to 43 riders. Several strong riders including Gesink caught by surprise behind.

Nothing lasts forever and the group gets back in contact. The next mountain turn out a bit livelier and Lars Petter Nordhaug goes on a grand attack. He build a good gap but with more than 100 km to go and two mountains he has a high risk of cracking.

With 25 km to go Nordhaug is caught by the favourites and soon after Contador is on the attack. Thomas knows it’s too early for him so he stays with the others.

Contador is a level above everyone else today. Löfkvist fights bravely but cannot match the top-climbers here.

Stage 5: Sion – Thun

The race organizers call the stage flat, but I can think of more than one sprinter who would not enjoy that “hill” halfway through the stage…

We had our money on a break, but the peloton seemed to agree that breakaways is a no-go today, so we put the slow pressure on the peloton on the hill instead reducing the group to 99 riders and picking up the mountain points.

In the end it seems to come down to a sprint in a peloton highly decimated by both the hills and a couple of big crashes catching a few of the top GC-riders behind as well.
1,8 km to go and Thor has been delivered nicely for the sprint.

Unfortunately that’s about as good as it gets as the big Norwegian has absolutely no punch to deliver.

Nibali, Fränk Schleck, Kelderman and quite a few others end up losing 4’37’’ due to the crash.

Bøchman did well to get away and pick up some mountain points, though not as many as hoped.
When starting the final climb 50 riders are still left in the front group.

Contador is by far the strongest climber in the race, but Thomas did well to finish 8th on the stage.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens on this stage. Bøchman will try to regain the mountain jersey after having lost it yesterday, but will the GC get in play?

Lasse goes in the break and sets a hard pace over the first hill picking up 5 points, which put him in front of the mountain classification. Still a lot of points left on the big mountain though so nothing is secured yet.

Lots of attacking on the main mountain turn out to be very descisive for the stage as Rui Costa goes solo and no one is able to catch him again. Great stage for the Portuguese rider.

dienblad: Neither do I. Have just raced the Tour prologue and it appears 10 out of the DB's 15 best climbers (incl. the top 3) are in the Tour so hopefully he will be challenged a bit more!

Critérium du Dauphiné

Dauphiné was all about building form for us. Not much to tell really except that Jesper climbed the rankings throughout the race and while he started poorly he still ended up on 14th in the GC looking sharp and ready for the Tour.

Tour de Slóvénie

Final preparations towards the Tour and the Nationals. At the same time we wanted to get something home – preferably by blowing things up and create some nice-to-watch racing.

Tobias Ludvigsson took stage 1 from a break. He worked hard to keep the break alive and still managed to be completely dominant in the sprint!
The rest of the stages went along nicely with lots of attacking but no more victories - except for the usual mountain jersey and the team classifications...
