24/2 2016 Clásica de Almería 2016 (cat. 1.HC)

Almeria – Roquetas de Mar: 184.2 km

Rasmussen Reports: We are here in Almería, Andalusia, for Clásica de Almería. The city was founded in 955 by Abd-ar-Rahman III Emir of Córdoba. The first winner after the race became professional in 1992 was Danish Johnny Weltz riding for ONCE:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/WE%20LTZ%20Johnny_zpsy0dzpmsl.jpg

In 2014 we had a horrible race here our best at 80th losing 3’31, but it is a very different squad this time with our top riders Sonder and Kenny, we expect it to end in a mass sprint, and will help keeping a break in line, unless we are in it. We expect to be favorites and aim for a podium.

It is 17°C blue sky but with a strong breeze. A lot of riders try to breakaway right from the start. It ends with a huge and very strong break of 15 riders. The break includes strong riders like Bart De Clercq (Lotto Belisol), Guillaume Levarlet (Europcar) and Sergey Chernetskiy (Sojasun) and Javier Moreno (Garmin).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsjftlvoi6.jpg

We set 3 riders in front starting the chase. Orica and Caja Rural are also ready to pull right from the start.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsjfhrajmu.jpg

But the break is very strong, the gab is not closed, and eventually Kenny Elissonde have to take over the lead in the mountains, he pulls as hard has he can, without losing Sondre Holst Enger.
Over the last top 11 riders are left in front, they got 1’56 with 40 km to the line.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsejmaghzu.jpg

The breakaway is too strong for us and Orica, 8 riders wins the stage with 50 sec. to the peloton. It is Carlos Verona (Omega Pharma) crossing the line first.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zps6vlstbo3.jpg

Media Coverage:
Only 23 year old, Carlos Verona from Omega Pharma took a surprise win in Clásica de Almería. After sitting in a large breakaway for more than 4 hours, he beat Javier Moreno in a close sprint.

A big disappointment for race favourite Bryan Coquard from Orica – GreenEdge, same goes for Astana’s Andrew Fenn and Sondre Holst Enger from Christina Watches both finishing outside top 10.

24/2 2016 Classic Sud-Ardèche (cat.1.1)
Bourg Saint-Andéol – Ruoms 198.1km

Christian Andersen reports: We are here in Bourg Saint-Andéol for the Classic Sud-Ardèche.
A Gallic settlement existed in the area before roman times. Bourg Saint-Andéol is best known for a relief dated 3rd century A.D, in the remnant of a temple dedicated to the god Mithras.

Engraving of the relief:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2.%20Gravure%20Bas-relief%20Mithra_zps1d6zgryl.jpg

Another first time race for us, the race is very hilly, we assume it will be a race for Davide, but if Francisco makes it over the last few hills, he may have a good chance in a reduced sprint. We have no set goal in this race, mainly scheduled as a fitness race for us. Our internal goal is a top10

It is only 5°C and rather cloudy with a fresh breeze, could be a very cold day on the road, but it is not raining on the start line. Many riders are fighting to get in the morning break and the pace is very high for a while, it ends with a breakaway of 6 riders with Martin Pedersen.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsydvtvrzz.jpg

It is mainly Argos – Shimano, MTN – Qhubeka and Differdange – Losch leading the chase. With 100 km to go, the distance is about 6 min.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsnvlneg5i.jpg

The peloton is getting closer and Wout Poels (Argos) attack from the peloton, getting a nice gap fast, in front Martin attacks on the last hard climb trying to ride the last km alone. Under the 10 km mark he got 45 sec. to Poels and 1’32 to the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsjxpezl7q.jpg

Poels is too fast for Martin, and the front of the peloton also catch him on the last 2 km. The Race is won the Wout Poels with 32 sec. to Merhawi Kudus (MTN). Martin Pedersen gets a 9th, while Davide Malacarne gets a disappointing 27th.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsrth1pf0x.jpg

Media Coverage:
One of the Bookmaker favorites, Dutch rider Wout Poels won the 2016 Classic South Ardeche, a solo victory after an attack over the last 20 km. This was his first victory after his resent transfer to Argos-Shimano, and his first win since a stage in Tour of Utah last season.

Eritrean Merhawi Kudus MTN – Qhubeka came 2nd. winning the sprint between the riders in the next large group, only 22 years this young East African is definitely a rider we can expect more from in the future.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2694_zps4tqday3f.jpg

Three Days of West Flanders was first held back in 1945, first won by Belgian rider Marcel Kint. The race have been won my mostly Belgian rider, but also Danish riders have won the race, Bo Hamburger in 1994 and Jesper Skibby in 1998. Last year we did not get in the GC but Patrick Clausen got a fine stage win on stage 3 to Ichtegem.

With a short ITT and flat stages with some cobbles but not that much, it is hard to predict this race, can be won in a lucky breakaway, if not is most likely a decent cobbles rider with a good ITT.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/stages-1_zpspggcmcw7.jpg

Our riders: Tony will be our leader with Mike as lieutenant. We got Patrick or Francisco if it comes to a mass sprint or Philip if he has the right day. We expect Tony to be able to get rather high the leader board.

1/3 Stage 1/3 Middelkerke 7.0 km

We are here in Middelkerke for the start of Three Days of West Flanders. The Excelsior hotel in Middelkerke was built in 1907, attracting clients of the highest aristocracy princes, marquees, counts ect., but it was destroyed in the 1st. World War and left in ruins until the late thirties.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Middlekirke_zpshf2n8bez.jpg

We expects Tony not to lose much time in this short ITT, maybe even get a top result.

Profile
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsdbquezhx.jpg

The stage was won by Jasha Sütterlin (REWE), Tony Gallopin came 5th. losing 15sec. Otherwise a bad stage for the team everyone except Tony lost more than 40 sec.

Sven Vandousselaere (Mobistar) also had a bad day, being one of the favourites for the coming cobbles he lost 44 sec. today.

Media Coverage:

German road race champion Jasha Sütterlin from Pro Continental team REWE won the prologue.

Tony Gallopin from Christina Watches was the strongest amongst the overall favourites taking valuable seconds on the competitors before the upcoming cobble stages.

AbhishekLFC: The head coach have decided to use Tony mainly in the early season, he is supposed to build up form, especially for peaking in Paris-Nice

AbhishekLFC
In that case, he's well on his way. Another good result on stage 1!

P.S: I like the new Media Coverage section Smile

Thanks AbhishekLFC, very glad you like it.

"especially for peaking in Paris-Nice" should be Paris-Roubaix

2/3 Stage 2/3 Brugge - Kortrijk-Bellegem: 181.5 Km

Rasmussen: We are here in Bruges for the start of the first ”real” stage of the race, Bruges City Hall is one of the oldest City Hall’s in Netherlands region. Constructed from 1376 to 1421, the impressive building reflects the economic and political power of Bruges in the period.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Brugge_zpsqmawuyo0.jpg

We expect a hard stage, the main obstacle may well be to keep a breakaway within reach. We will protect Tony close to the front and work in the peloton if necessary.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpswx5oudsk.jpg

It is cloudy and only 8°C with a very strong breeze, it will be a hard day on the roads of Flanders. The morning breakaway is 7 riders, Job Vissers (Belkin) quite clearly the strongest in the group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpskmqqx8cl.jpg

We set young Anton Grøn up front, putting as much pressure as he can on the break, they get a max. of about 3’20 .

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsoaxwb0ia.jpg

About mid stage Vacansoleil takes over the pursuit, they set a very high pace and it is no longer possible that the break will hold. On a cobble section with about 25 km left, Tony Gallopin sets in an attack.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpshidub60n.jpg

Tony Gallopin gets caught. Now the fighting amongst the favorites has started, attacking continues again and again in the reduces front group of about 35 riders. Under the 10 km mark it is Tom Veelers (GUNK) countered by Tony Gallopin.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsodf8kasi.jpg

Eventually it is Giacomo Nizzolo (Coca Cola) setting up the final strike, attacking from 3 km and being the fastest sprinter, he takes the stage with 19 sec. to the competitors. Tom Veelers wins the bunch sprint in front of Tony Gallopin.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpsjlfghko2.jpg

Media Coverage:
Pre-race favorite Giacomo Nizzolo from team Coca Cola, won the 2nd stage of Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen, a long awaited victory for the 27 year old Italian, surprisingly this gifted sprinter has not won since Tour de Wallonie in 2012.

Dutch veteran 31 years old Tom Veelers climed 2nd. A strong season for him so far, with 2 podiums and winning Le Samyn just a few days ago.

Heading into the final day suspense is at is maximum with only 35 seconds between the first 10 riders, follow this drama right here.

3/3 Stage 3/3 Nieuwpoort - Ichtegem: 186.5 Km

Rasmussen reports:
Filips van de Elzas, Count of Flanders established Nieuwpoort as a port city in late 1100’s, the city is knows form the battle between the Dutch and Spanish army in 1600.
Battle of Nieuwpoort by Paulus van Hillegaert, approx. 1636:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1024px-Slag_bij_Nieuwpoort_zpsgbi1ajzs.jpg

We expect another hard stage similar to yesterday, where the pack will hunt down a breakaway before the race favourites will once again take over in a harsh fight for seconds.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpstddfsfro.jpg

Another cold and cloudy day with just 7°C. The morning break is 9 riders, on paper the strongest is Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil). In the hilly part mid stage approaching the first cobbles section they got 3 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsqpvhwf21.jpg

The first hard uphill cobbles section take its toll, bookmaker favourits Nikolas Maes (Omega Pharma) and Roberto Ferrari (Vodafone) as well as outsider Elia Favilli (Omega Pharma) was dropped, they never get back in the race.
Elia Favilli left alone more than 3 minutes after the favourite group:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps8oqexquz.jpg

It is Coca Cola and Christina Watches leading the chase.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsmevokoty.jpg

The break is over at the last cobbles section with about 8 km left, a few km later Tony Gallopin attacks, the only one left with energy left follow is Giacomo Nizzolo.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsm7buczm7.jpg

Tony Gallopin wins the stage to Ichtegem, Nizzolo 2nd in the same time, Tom Veelers becomes 3rd winning the bunch sprint but losing 43 seconds to Gallopin.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zps3mwugq5e.jpg

Media Coverage:
Giacomo Nizzolo, won the 2016 Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen, due to a brilliant solo win on stage 2 after getting 2nd on the last stage and, a perfect season start for team Coca Cola’s Italian sprinter.

Tony Gallopin won the last stage, his first victory after the transfer to Christina Watches for the 2016 season. Resulting in race overall 2nd and claiming the points jersey as well.

Where Pro Continental team REWE did very well, The disappointment of the race was Saxo – Tinkoff not at all visible in the Race, also Omega Pharma had a rather bad race considering they had some good riders in the squad they did not get any top 10 finishes.
