Volta ao Algarve 14/2 – 17/2 (cat. 2.1)

14/2 Stage 1/4 Faro – Albufeira : 205.7 km

Rasmussen Reports: We are in Faro about 60 km from the Spanish border, on the southern coast of Portugal. The route passes over a cat.3 climb near Vaqueiros village, before heading back to Albufeira on the coast about 40 km west of Faro.

Faro dates back to a settlement from 4th century BC, at the time known as Ossonoba. The city became part of Portugal in 1249 by conquest from Muslim rule, from then referred to as Santa Maria de Faaron. Building of the current Cathedral of Faro began in 1251:

We will try to get someone in a breakaway, keep Gallopin safe and help Høberg if it comes to a mass sprint.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsacvuripl.jpg

It is 17°C, blue sky and basically no wind, the morning break is 3 riders, a little later Martin Pedersen attacks, hanging very long in between, about 70 km, eventually Pedersen gets contact, but he has lost a lot of energy and only get 2 KoM points. The group gets about 5’30.

The morning breakaway:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsrzqxk1nf.jpg

Petersen gets his breath back quickly, and several times he tries to attack, attempting to shake of the stronger sprinter Adrian Honkisz (Adway) after a few attempts he is successful, Serrano and Pedersen is now alone on front.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps3ozzdufp.jpg

But the peloton is to fast and it all ends in a mass sprint, Gianni Meersman (Lotto Belisol) wins in Albufeira over Daryl Impey (Vodafone), our best is Morten Høberg (10)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsqnipsyq3.jpg

Rasmussen: Was a quiet, almost boring day in the Portuguese sun, only Petersen got into the action but did not get rewarded.

Volta ao Algarve 14/2 – 17/2 (cat. 2.1)

15/2 Stage 1/4: Lagoa - Lagoa 194.2 km

Rasmussen Reports: From Albufeira the caravan has moved about 25 km further west to Lagoa, a small municipality just 10 km east of the larger port city Portimão. From Lagoa the route takes the riders over 2 categorized climbs in the Serra de Monchique (Monchique range) before it returns to Lagoa.
A typical coastline in Lagoa municipality:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Lagoa_zpsosdm3ibv.jpg

Just like yesterday we will try to get in a breakaway, we expect the finish to be very hard for Høberg, it is more likely that Tony can compete in a hard finish like this, if it comes to a mass sprint.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsdsckkx0z.jpg

It is exactly the same type of weather, as it was yesterday, perfect for a race day.
The morning break is 2 riders Antonio Piedra (LA Alumínios) and Davide Mucelli (Ceramica Flaminia), Pedersen has got the chance to counter, but those riders will be much too strong for him in the mountains, he decides to stay back. Not long after Daniel Navarro (Banco Santander) starts a solo pursuit.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsfqmzct6t.jpg

Near the top of the cat.3 Tony Gallopin decides to take action, he attacks looking for KoM points, and maybe a little bonus sec. on the last intermediate sprint.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsxsz18t2j.jpg

Gallopin catches the group before the last climb, and wins the KoM sprint win a very small margin. The peloton is now close there is no point in fighting to stay ahead.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpspstnndzf.jpg

Many riders have lost contact with the peloton over the climbs, but with no breakaway in front everything slows down, and most riders get back. The peloton is closing in on the finish in a relative moderate pace. With about 5 km left Gallopin attempts another attack.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsg1qdb7vu.jpg

Tony’s legs a not strong enough for this last adventure, on the last 5-600 meter, he has no more and the best sprinter is passing him. The stage in Lagoa is won by Matteo Trentin (Cannondale) the podiums go to Gianni Meersman and Philippe Gilbert. Our best was Tony Gallopin (11).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpsl8mlarrd.jpg

Rasmussen: Tony probably lost some energy, he could use better on another stage, but when a rider like him feels like this, you best just let him do what he has to do. What you lose in energy you gain in fan and sponsor loyalty.

Volta ao Algarve 14/2 – 17/2 (cat. 2.1)

16/2 Stage 3/4 Portimão – Alto do Malhão: 205.7 km

Rasmussen Reports: Today we start in Portimão, a port city of about 55.000 people. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, megalithic tombs have been found in the area dating back to approx. 3000 BC. Later Carthaginians founded the city as Portis Hanibalis around 550 BC.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/portimao_zpsipl945g1.jpg

We expect the stage to be very hard, and we will only focus on helping Tony Gallopin.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsikra8x6z.jpg

It is still beautiful spring weather in Algarve, 17°C with a fresh breeze. The morning break of 5 riders include KoM leader Davide Mucelli, he takes the first mountain sprint, and the KoM is as good as set.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsytr07kzf.jpg

The breakaway gets about 7’30 it is time for the peloton to take action, after the climb it is Frederique Robert, Benjamin Verraes (both Lotto Belisol) and Mike Teunissen (Christina Watches) sacrificing themselves to reel in the breakaway.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpswi09kpqb.jpg

The break is over with about 30 km to the line, but then attacks start between the stronger riders. Over the next 20 km attack after attack is attempted and failed.
At the foot of the final climb Tony Gallopin attacks, countered by André Cardoso (Caja Rural), about 30 sec. in front is Dries Devenyns (Omega Pharma).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsg0fkrses.jpg

Devenyns is passed and Cardoso fall back, but Gallopin is caught by Gilbert and Mollema from behind.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsthpyqefl.jpg

Gilbert is clearly the strongest on the last 2 km, he wins the stage to Alto do Malhão, Gallopin claims 2nd in a close sprint with Bauke Mollema.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsthpyqefl.jpg

Rasmussen: Fantastic result, quite some time gained on many of the GC contenders. Now it is all about not losing too much in the ITT tomorrow.

17/2 Stage 4/4 Castro Marim –Tavira: 205.7 km

Rasmussen Reports: We are here in Castro Marim for the final ITT, very long for a race of only 4 days. From Castro Marim the route goes into the hills, climbing about 200m over a little more than 5 km. before descending towards the finish in Tavira.

Profile:

Media Coverage:
Philippe Gilbert from Coca Cola won the Volta ao Algarve 2016, he also took the point classification, brilliant team result by Coca Cola, taking also the Team Jersey and the Youth Jersey, Bob Jungels is definitely a coming star.

Tony Gallopin from upcoming World Tour team Christina Watches got second, a very good season start from the Danish team.

Bauke Mollema was 3rd, a good result from pro-continental team Vacansoleil.

Continental team Ceramica Flaminia must be trilled taking the KoM in a race like this.

The big losers amongst the World Tour team’s was Banco Santander with Samuel Sánchez finishing outside top 20; Saxo, FDJ and BMC was not better, no stage wins and outside top 20.

No not that many races, in fact I think we got a little to many riders, some of the weaker riders will get under 50 race day. How many days is optimal ?

There's no optimum, it used to be 60 days in older PCM versions. Depending on schedule and training intensity rider can race 80 days without getting tired. While weaker riders should be satisfied with 50 days or less, so nothing to worry about.

Good stuff so far, Gallopin was a great signing!

thanks !
