A late attack from, Belgian Champ, Maes takes the win. He attacked with 15 kilometres to go and despite the peloton and attacks from Lander, Mikkelson and our own Rojas showing his face at the front there was no stopping him for a solo win.

A late crash sees our world champ, Vanendert, pick up a few cuts and bruises.

Without question this was our most successful day of the Eneco tour. Cartillo was in the break, a break which would fight out the win....

But he wouldn't be victorious, that honour went to the young Dane, Olesen. He beat quality puncheur Slagter in an entertaining long two man sprint to wrap up the Eneco tour. The Dane looks to be a rider on the way up to the very top after also winning the KOM jersey at Paris Nice earlier in the year.

Olesen:

The break looked in control but with 12 kilometres to go our Rojas was the first to fall and cause a big crash. After that the peloton took it easier. Roux wins the Eneco.

A winless streak of over 35 stages looms over the team ahead of the Vuelta, after being a marked team for much of the season we hope, after a winless run, that we are considered underdogs and are allowed some leeway.

@ Atlantius - To be expected, but it looks like the racing has boosted fitness b4 the Vuelta.

Shonak
I am sure the team will get rid of this little run of bad luck at the Vuelta. It's always a good race for brave breakaways and late success in the season. Smile

RACE: San Sebastian - San Sebastian 231 KM's

Race Favourites:
***van der Sande(HLE) **Pere(HLE) *Tsatevitch(ISS)

This hilly classic is usually hard to call, but there is no doubt a quality puncheur or sprinter will be victorious at the end of the stage. Our last race before the Vuelta begins.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/1_zpsabdea024.jpg

Like the last stage of the Eneco tour our Andorran, Cartillo, gets into the break of the day.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/2_zpsdc109c1e.jpg

With 40 kilometres to go behind the chase is well and truly on. World champ Vanendert was the first big name to be dropped on the second ascent of the Jazkibel. He is really suffering from his injuries sustained last week, there are still 100 riders in the peloton when he is dropped.

With 25 kilometres to go Cartillo has ridden away from the break. Not because he intended to but because no one else was contributing, he quickly pulls out '30.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/3_zps4f7303b5.jpg

Over the Arkale with 15 kilometres to go and Pere, part of the big 2 at Herbalife, attacks.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/4_zps609c118f.jpg

The move is quickly nullified before 7 riders including: Kreuizger; JJ Rojas and van der Sande ride across to Cartilo.

The peloton re group with this group.. Gautier puts in a attack which goes no where before van der Sande puts in a big attack.. but with a flat run he is caught inside 2 kilometres to go. A largish group of punechurs will contest the sprint.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/5_zps66116306.jpg

Garcia takes the win. He is a wiley veteran picked the right wheel and the win never looked in doubt. He finished 3rd at last year's world championships and won a TDF stage in 2014 but that has to be the biggest win of his career.

After staying out of trouble Duran manages to finish in the top 10 after following Villegas in the final, it was our best and final result before the Vuelta begins.

Despite Ion Izagirre riding a terrific Vuelta in 2019 to finish second Duran is our absolute leader here for this Vuelta. Sicard also makes the startline but he is well aware he isn't in great shape and is here as a super domestique.

Duran's best GT record:
2020 Giro: 2nd Place
2019 TDF: 5th Place
2018 Vuelta: 6th Place
2016 Giro: 3rd Place
2015 Vuelta: 5th Place
2015 Giro: 9th Place
2014 Vuelta: 2nd Place

Best GT results:
Rowe 17th 2020 Giro
Brambilla 6th 2019 Giro
De Vos 7th 2020 Giro
Kadri 18th 2016 Giro
Riis 11th 2020 Giro
Marais 22nd 2020 TDF

After one of the top climbers/ GC men of this century in Pinot won here last year we expected at least one huge name to come to the start list. That has not happened.

Brambilla has won many many races in Italia but has never done anything in Spain. Marais showed very well in the hardest TDF in recent memory earlier in the year, but has had his hardest season yet. De Vos rode very combatively in this Giro but never threatened.

Make no mistakes about it, whereas top notch guys for the less mountainous terrain such as van der Sande and Sagan are here, on paper the GC field has no big names whatsoever other than our riders and can be even described as very weak.

The Vuelta is the same route as the 2012 edition starting with a TTT in Pamplona and ending in Madrid with many mountainous stages in between.

If all goes to plan a Qatar Optics rider will be on the top step of the podium come Madrid.

Great banner again for Classica de San Sebastien, (bike in green isn't it?)

You must win the Vuelta, poor competition and you got a strong team. If you are a real pcm rider, there is no option but to win Angry

STAGE 1: Pamplona - Pamplona 15 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Orica **Euskaltel *Rabobank

We start off with a TTT. Usually I would fancy our chances but today we are carrying some dead weight in the aegis of some unfit riders and a slightly injured Vanendert. The goal being not to lose too much time.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/1_zps87fdef86.jpg

FDJ were the first team off the ramp. Once again they enter a GT with all 9 riders being Frenchman, next season Boasson Hagen will be riding for them so that tradition may be broken. FDJ finish @ 22'38.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/3_zps9211157c.jpg

Duran looked great as he spearheaded our team around the course. Provisionally we finish '2 faster than FDJ... but after a timing error we are given the same time but for a few hundredths of a second.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/4_zps0e475730.jpg

Despite Cam Meyer distancing his teammates on parts of the technical course, Orica would set the fastest time of 22'18. ExxonMobil finish within '1 and only Euskaltel stand in the way of victory....

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/5_zps1bb9a398.jpg

The home team take the win. Euskaltel win the opening stage TTT. With strong time trialists such as Castroviejo and Inxausti they are worthy winners. The winner of the tour of the Battenkill, Bermudez, was the first across the line and will don the read leader's jersey.

We only lose '30 seconds and with high spirits raised this was a good stage for the team.

Stage Favourites:

A lumpy stage but one for the sprinters.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/6_zps8f257ccc.jpg

The first to fall in this Vuelta is.... Turkish champ Yildiz. Fortunately he was feeling great and easily managed to get back into the peloton as the crash occurred when the peloton were taking it easy once the break were just established.

Today was a day to protect. Cartillo and LL Sanchez did very well to look after Duran.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/7_zpsb7a3d1d4.jpg

Matthews wins stage 1. The Aussie just holds of Sagan for the win, the '20 bonus seconds lifts him into the top 10. The break were caught late, very late in fact. Frapporti of the break finished in the top 10 which is testament to this.

Yildiz showed well being one of the first to launch a sprint and Rojas showed he still has a great sprint by finishing 6th. Duran finishes safely.

@ sutty - A good workout for this race. Wink

@duxili - Not a bicycle, just a surreal green texture. Wink We have never won a GT...

@ Shonak - Hilly stages are coming. Wink

Shonak
Well, that would have been probably too crazy if Rojas would have been the guy who ended the run of not-won stages/races. Wink

duxili
Well, the start is not great but not that bad either. Time to start winning a GT!

STAGE 3: Faustino - Eibar 152 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***van der Sande(HLE) **Pere(HLE) *Tsatevitch(ISS)

Today is a real tester for the GC, although with the race being young the quality puncheurs here will likely battle out the victory. Alto de Arrate is 4.5 kilometres @ 8.8% and summits just 1 kilometres before the finish.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/1_zps7aa037ca.jpg

The early breakaway riders are caught very early on with 85 kilometres to go. Just as they are caught 2 quality puncheurs attacks, they are Miles and Stuyven, both are less than 1:00 down in the GC.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/2_zps0d524bb4.jpg

Moments later we send Vanendert on the attack and he would be joined by Torres of Caja Rural. It was a really exciting stage of the race as we had four breaks ahead of the peloton. The 3rd break included, San Sebastian winner, Garcia of Kenda and the fourth included Humbert and Frapporti.

Four breaks would become five as Miles falls and leaves Stuyven to soldier on. The now solo lead break would gain a max time of 3'40 before Euskaltel, RIM and Herbalife start the chase.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/3_zps7b9913e1.jpg

Gradually all of the other breaks are gobbled up. Stuyven has 2'20 over the peloton with 5 kilometres to go and the steep final climb begins. The Arrate.

Interestingly Izagirre appears to be suffering less than Duran so far as the final beckons.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/4_zpsfc650a5e.jpg

van der Sande thinks about attacking. Before Mora of Katusha does, who goes with him? We do, BUT IT IS NOT DURAN. Izagirre is the one to attack and van der Sande attacks after them.

van der Sande attacks these two and works his way up to Stuyven who he would catch at the top of the climb with one kilometre to go. Behind, Inxausti and Garabay sacrifice themselves for the red jersey.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/5_zpsc5578649.jpg

Stuyven's face shows he has nothing left as he is caught and passed by the stage winner van der Sande. The super hill man would also don the red jersey as....

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/6_zps250d0dcb.jpg

the red jersey group finishes 1'33 down... Crucially, also loosing '30 to Izagirre who would finish 4th on the day. What a stage. We said Duran was our absolute leader, but with Ion in this form he may be our go to guy.

Top 3: van der Sande, Stuyven, Mora

The other GC contenders are beatable. Come on! Smile

Shonak
Ion Izagirre with a real strong performance. Very happy with that hihi Wink Not sure if he has the qualities to be the leader the Vuelta though, might be best to stick with Duran. However, to switch leader's is something a good manager always has to think about obviously.

Ian Butler
I4d go with Ion Wink Or at least keep both of them up there as long as possible Wink If they both head into the final week as top 10, you can use that to put some pressure on other teams!
