I was not commenting a while here but i am following still
Great Vuelta so far, Nibali is almost sure winner. Dominik is fantastic, this should be the real breakthrough GT for him, also great win with Sagan (he is great in GC too).
Overall Liquigas is dominating and you are keeping the quality of the story on the highest level, always the nice read
A flat stage for most of the peloton to relax. We can expect a bunch sprint but as the last few kilometers are ascending, the punchy sprinters or puncheurs could have a say here, too.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
We clearly aim for our sixth stage win. The finish is perfectly suited for Sagan and Finetto and we'll do everything to ensure a mass sprint.
Live Ticker
Km 4:
Vitaly Kondrut and Jens Voigt are the first attackers.
.
Km 30:
16 riders are in front now. Way too many to tolerate for the peloton.
.
Km 52:
While Kondrut fell back, Voigt is part of the break, which has a strong German touch. In addition to Voigt, there are also Martens (Rabobank) and Kluge (Skil) present.
.
Km 69:
With 92 kms to go and the advance up to seven minutes, Liquigas takes over the lead.
.
Km 116:
A couple of riders try it with 45 kms to go: Gustavo Cesar Veloso, Peter Velits and Simon Spilak are on their way.
.
Km 125:
As more and more riders attack, the break grows to 13 riders. Even Nerz participates in the chase now, the pace is high.
.
Km 140:
Vacansoleil and Movistar took over now. It doesn't look like the break would have any chance.
.
Km 147:
With 14 kms to go, the last remaining parts of the break are caught. It's all ready for a mass sprint.
.
Km 150:
Or is it? Again, it's Gustavo Cesar Veloso who attacks.
.
Km 154:
But he's caught again. No chance for anyone but the sprinters.
.
Km 157:
Oh my! A couple of riders hit the ground! The pack splits, only about 60 riders are in the front group. All top riders seen to be there,
.
Km 158:
While Vacansoleil sets up a perfect train, Sagan and Finetto were blocked in a bit.
.
Km 159:
But Sagan does a hell of a job and comes to the front. Valverde is on his wheel, Finetto behind him.
.
Km 161:
Finetto has problems to launch his sprint and only finishes sixth, a bit disappointing. Philippe Gilbert is the dominant winner once again. He's amazing!
.
Km 161:
While Nerz finished comfortably in the first group, GC's 9th, 10th and 11th, Mosquera, Daniel and Javier Moreno all lost more than two minutes due to the crash. The Top 10 are coming closer for Nerz.

Dominik's Comment
Not a very good day for the team. The lead out didn't work very well and in the end, Mauro didn't have the punch for a really good result. Sixth is respectable but not more.
On the other hand, I benefitted from the crash and the split of the pack. I am only sixteen seconds away from the Top 10! And I'm a better time trialist than most of the guys closely in front of me.
Two mountain stages await us now but both without a mountain top finish. It should be tough nevertheless.
You are close to the top 10, keep fighting Dominik!. Pity with the failed sprint, Gilbert is super strong
Edited by Avin Wargunnson on 21-03-2012 05:58
The stage is shaped by three tough mountains that are to cross. The last top is 24 kms from the finish which makes big time gaps less probable. A sprint from a small group or a breakaway seems probable.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
We will ride rather defensively today. We'll try to send someone into the break, maybe Sylvester as a reward for all the work he has done. We won't do the pace in the pack as we aren't in the need to gain time. Also, if Peter could cross the last mountain within the first group, he would have great chances to win. Today also might be a chance for Vincenzo to gain the lead in the mountain classification.
Live Ticker
Km 2:
Burghardt launches the first attack of the day and Sylvester Szmyd follows.
.
Km 18:
Only three riders are in front and they seem to lack of the strength to get away. More attacks are coming.
.
Km 33:
Everything is back together but Szmyd tries it again.
.
Km 47:
And really: On the bottom of the first climb, a group of five has found themselves. A couple of riders are behind them.
.
Km 80:
Close to the second climb, the escapees have more than nine minutes of advance. With Tiralongo, Knees and Wyss, threre are strong climbers present.
.
Km 91:
Szmyd leads the seven escapees over the second climb. They are 11 minutes in front. A win for them is possible.
.
Km 93:
Even after those two climbs, there are still more than 150 riders in the pack. A sign for the slow pace.
.
Km 127:
The advance grew to 17 minutes. It's between the escapees today.
.
Km 136:
Andrei Kashechkin is the first that can't keep up anymore.
.
Km 138:
Szmyd knows he has no chance in a sprint and attacks!
.
Km 138:
The pack splits up on this climb. And Igor Anton misses the right move. He's a bit more than a minute behind the main group.
.
Km 135:
Rodriguez attacks and Nibali counters as well as Valverde.
.
Km 138:
Nibali attacks one more time to use his great descending skills.
.
Km 151:
Meanwhile, Szmyd created a 40 seconds gap on the other escapees.
.
Km 144:
Nerz and Sagan are in an elite group behind Nibali, who dropped the pace as his attack didn't seem to work out.
.
Km 148:
And Nibali is back.
.
Km 162:
Szmyd did it! Sixth stage win for Liquigas and a fantastic revenue for all the domestique work.
.
Km 162:
Nibali, Nerz and Sagan come in 12 minutes later. Anton is missing in the group as well as some others of the Top 10. Nerz advances to nineth overall, amazing!

Dominik's Comment
We just don't stop! It's so great for Sylvester that he got a reward for all the hard work he has done so far. He also advances back into the Top 20.
Also, since Mosquera and Javier Moreno failed to get into the main group, I really advanced into the Top 10! Isn't that amazing? But you have to look at the distances: Moreno is one, Mosquera is two seconds behind me. I don't know if that ever happened in a GT at this stage before! One mountain stage (with a descent to the finish) and the time trial (where I'll have advances) will decide.
I'd like to draw your attention once again to the team results: We gained 20 minutes on Katusha today and lead now by 40 minutes! It shows how strong we are here in Spain.
The mentioned mountain stage is up tomorrow and then, the main exertions are over! See you,
The last mountain stage of the race and the last chance for the likes of Rodriguez or Antón to gain some time before the time trial. The four huge and several small climbs over 196 kms will strech the riders to the limits.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
Personally, I just want to stay as close to the front as possible. I surely could use some more time especially on Kern and Gilbert before the time trial as I feel that my shape is slowly declining. For the team, Nibali is going for the mountain classification, which is why we'll keep the peloton together at least until the first mountain sprint. After that, Caruso, Szmyd or even Peter Sagan will go into a break, hoping for a similar outcome as yesterday.
Live Ticker
Km 6:
The first lonely escapee of the day is Sep Vanmarcke (Garmin). Not particularly known for his climbing.
.
Km 10:
Bernardo Zanchi (Quick·Step) joins him but Liquigas already started the chase.
.
Km 23:
After a long quiet time, a couple of riders under the lead of Edvald Boasson Hagen tries to attack the Liquigas armada.
.
Km 29:
But they don't even have the slightest chance. Nibali easily takes six points and leads the classification with two points now.
.
Km 38:
Simon Gerrans, who has been very active lately, attacks on the descent.
.
Km 47:
Following Andriy Grivko, Damiano Caruso attacks.
.
Km 63:
At the bottom of the first bigger climb, Caruso is part of the six men break, 3'30 in front of the pack. Four more riders are a bit behind them.
.
Km 77:
Caruso leads the ten riders over the climb. They're five minutes in front. Wim Van Huffel (FDJ) is the next best climber, after Caruso.
.
Km 114:
The advance don't grow to more than 8 minutes, in contrary: It slowly starts to decrease.
.
Km 119:
The pack starts to split very early. While Liquigas was once again very attentive, some of the Top 10 riders are caught behind.
.
Km 133:
The break probably won't have a chance today. Only 5 riders are left together and with 64 kms to go, they're only 5 minutes away. But there have been stranger outcomes...
.
Km 156:
For Liquigas, it would be great if the break survived the last climb. Then, the mountain jersey would be safe at least for today.
.
Km 168:
Caruso increases the pace and is soon alone. 8 kms to the top.
.
Km 169:
Kessiakoff and Sanchez attack from the main group!
.
Km 171:
Rodriguez follows soon and Nibali increases the pace to bring them back.
.
Km 175:
Soon, he finds himself along with Caruso and Sanchez. Cobo and Anton follow closely behind.
.
Km 175:
Nerz keeps himself in the front part of the main group. Valverde attacks while Rodriguez surprisingly stays calm.
.
Km 176:
Nibali attacks and wins the mountain sprint. The best two descenders are now in front of the rest.
.
Km 178:
Nerz passes the top of the climb along with the other Top 10 riders except for Anton, Cobo and Valverde, who are a bit in front.
.
Km 194:
Nibali and Sanchez have an advance of 30 seconds with 3 kms to go.
.
Km 195:
One kilometer later, Nibali attacks! Sanchez is probably the better sprinter.
.
Km 197:
This guy is a phenomenon! Fifth stage win!
.
Km 197:
Nerz sprints to a great 14th place among the followers.
.
Km 197:
Sagan loses another seven minutes on Nerz, which means the young riders classification is decided now.

Dominik's Comment
Slowly but surely, I run out of words for our performance. Vincenzo has now incredible 5 (in words: five) stage wins! And I don't even have to mention the GC, his win there has been safe for days already.
I, once again, was able to stay with the best men above the mountains. And as I hoped, I could gain time on some riders behind me. Only Mosquera and Moreno could kick me out of the Top 10 again but since they aren't known to be good time trialists, I don't worry about that too much.
Tomorrow's an easier day, a bit recovery before the time trial.
@ dienblad: Then you better hurry: Ingame, I'm already past the Tour of Beijing, so I could in fact post at double or triple speed And yes, it was the seventh win. Thanks
@ Pelli: Thanks. While playing, I thought "this is how Pellizotti2 must feel, winning (almost) every race" But then I realized it was "just" the Vuelta where even Gilbert can enter the Top 15... Still, I'm proud especially of Dominik's results.
hi havent been commenting in a while now but i m still checking every update its really an amazing vuelta for the whole team but of course i am especially happy for dominik finally having his big breakthrough!!!
also i think your reports are matching the results of liquigas just great - keep it up!
ps if this story continues like that we need a new difficulty level for you as well
Sorry for not posting in a while but I just started university this week so PCM isn't quite my priority at the moment Anyway, I still have a couple of reports already written, so you may expect one every couple of days.
The third to last stage of the Vuelta is classified as hilly but doesn't really look that challenging. It's also rather short. Also note that the last kilometer is once again ascending.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
The finish seems to be taylor made for Peter Sagan. But since we don't want to spend our energy chasing, especially with the time trial tomorrow in mind, we will send Marco Marcato or Daniel Oss into the break once again. If that shouldn't work, we will do everything to ensure a bunch sprint.
Live Ticker
Km 2:
Lampre has been a very active team throughout the whole race and they won't stop now: Xavier Florencio attacks with Marco Marcato on his wheel.
.
Km 31:
The pack splits! Numerous riders including Sanchez, Rodriguez and Valverde are caught behind! We can expect them to rejoin later on, though.
.
Km 36:
Meanwhile, Marco Marcato leads solo in front of a 10 men group with two minutes on the peloton.
.
Km 41:
The bigger groups reunited again but under heavy winds, the peloton is stretched a lot. The riders have to be very attentive today.
.
Km 50:
Marcato fell back to the main group of escapees, consisting of eleven riders. Among them are stage 12 winner Paul Martens as well as Edvald Boasson Hagen, who would be the top favorite if this group made it.
.
Km 77:
With 68 kms to go and the break more than seven minutes away, Liquigas comes to the front of the pack, despite having Marcato in the break.
.
Km 115:
But 38 kms later, the advance is still at almost five minutes and they let it go.
.
Km 132:
With 13 kms to go, the weaker sprinters Tiralongo, Florencio and Popovych attack!
.
Km 140:
But eventhough they could open a 30 seconds gap, they're caught with 5 kms to go.
.
Km 142:
A bit later, Popovych tries it again and this time, it's Marcato who follows!
.
Km 144:
And they get away! They sprint for the win and on the last kilometer, Popovych has a solid advance. Can Marcato counter?
.
Km 145:
No. Popovych was stronger today. After a third, a fourth and a fifth spot, Marcato now scores a second place... Oscar Sevilla finishes third.
.
Km 145:
Sagan wins the meaningless sprint for 12th place easily.

Dominik's Comment
What Marco Marcato accomplishes during this race is amazing! Not only has he a nose for the right breakaway, he also has the legs to finish it very well. For the fourth time, he achieves a Top 5 result from a breakaway now. The only thing that's missing is a win - highly unlikely now, which is a pity, but nevertheless, his stamina is admirable.
Because of the break, we had a relatively calm day in the pack. The winds were tough but as usual, our team was very attentive and never got in danger of falling behind. As you read, we spent some time in the lead because Peter Sagan said he felt awesome and there were a couple of good sprinters with Marcato, but we didn't go full power and stopped when we realized the break would stay free. Then, we could regenerate a bit for the time trial tomorrow.
