Probably this is the best report that I have never seen in any story. You have not obtained the victory and nevertheless you have my congratulation, this has been incredible.
Again, thanks a lot everyone! Great to hear good things about the reports!
@ valverde - Hahah, I wish! I'm quite sure I didn't though.
Here's the preview for the three Ardennes classics!

Thanks to a bit of luck, Roman Kreuziger managed to prevail atop Cauberg. The day's strongest rider and the pre-race favourite, Philppe Gilbert, would most likely have won if he hadn't got boxed in at the foot of the final climb. Therefore he could only save a third place, beaten also by Simon Gerrans. Mitch Docker's 9th place was a positive surprise for us.
The course:
No change from last year. Still a long day of climbing a huge amount of tiny, steep hills. The action is expected to start on the Eyserbosweg, with about twenty kilometres to go, and then continue over the Keutenberg and then finish on Cauberg.
Project squad:
We'll head to the Netherlands with a twin-headed leader. Daily form will decide whether Fuglsang or Martens receives the main leader role. Most important help will come from Lagutin and Geschke, who both survives some hills without exploding. Still, it's up to our two leaders in the end.
After missing out on what I think would have been an easy victory last year, Philippe Gilbert is back a year later, stronger and more fit than ever. He's three points higher than his main rivals in terms of hill stat. Beat him and you'll win for sure. Best of the rest are among others MSR champion Purito Rodriguez, the separated Schlecks and Wout Poels. The winner should be one of those.

The peloton miscalculated their chase and allowed a mid-race breakaway to battle it out for the victory up Mur de Huy. Dries Devenyns was the one with most left in the tank and best timed move, turning him into the day's lucky man. Simone Ponzi and Greg Van Avermaet were probably pretty satisfied with their podium spots as well. Kreuziger was the strongest of the favourites once again, while Docker had a mediocre day, crossing the line in 22nd.
The course:
The main obstacle on the route in this short classic is of course Mur de Huy, which is climbed thrice. The last of those is the famous uphill finish atop. It's so brutal that the big peloton that usually starts the climb together usually finishes in pieces, often with minutes in between first and last man. It's all about the final climb.
Project squad:
Same tactic as in Amstel will be applied once again here. Fuglsang and Martens will both lead the squad, and the one feeling best of them will be supported by the other in the finale. Lagutin, also a decent puncher, will have a more free role than the rest of the squad too, possibly to try an 'early' attack.
Joining Gilbert, Schleck, Rodriguez and Co. are names such as Alejandro Valverde, Michele Scarponi and Damiano Cunego. As you understand, that means even less chance for us, and even more exciting racing to be expected. Should be a great race, with many big names.

Gilbert finally got his wanted victory after failing in Amstel and Flèche. Not saying that he got it easily though. Kreuziger's sneaky jump in the last descent almost caught the rest out. Our leader of the day, Sprick could not match the best and never made it back after losng contact up Saint-Nicolas. 19th in the end.
The course:
Somewhere in between Amstel and Flèche profile-wise. No way near as hilly as Amstel, but not as easy as Flèche either. However, with famous climbs like the Redoute, the Roche-aux-Faucons and the Saint-Nicolas, together with the uphill sprint inside Liège, this is both the most prestigious and the hardest of the three.
Project squad:
A new luxury helper, in the shape of Jurgen Van den Broeck, joins the squad. Fuglsang and Martens will still be leaders however, as the Belgian is just starting his preparation for the Giro next month. He'll still get a free role, something also Lagutin continues having. Otherwise it's the same as earlier.
Main favourite is again, surprise, surprise, Gilbert, and his main rivals will, once again, be the Schlecks, Rodriguez, Poels, Valverde and Cunego, among others. More or less exactly the same startlist as in Flèche.
We tried to get into the day's early breakaway, but eventually gave up after being chased down several times. After almost a hundred kilometres of racing, a group finally got away though. Most notable names were Sylwester Szmyd, Stefano Pirazzi and John Degenkolb.
About halfway through the day, two more riders caught up with the earlier group. First Fabian Wegmann and just a few minutes later also our own Sergey Lagutin, in his Uzbekian champion's shirt.
A long time later, when the group was more or less caught by the main field, Lagutin made a little jump from the group, setting off solo in a last try to hold off the chasing peloton. Only Wegmann could follow.
The German then jumped over Lagutin, going for an own solo ride. The rest of the early breakaway were now back in the field, and thanks to that they got caught on a section of narrow road, the two at the front could stretch out their advantage a little bit more, to around 1'30.
Back in the peloton we got the first attacks coming from Androni leader Marco Marzano and Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert. A bit of a surprise there, as we didn't expect him to make his move this early.
Gilbert obviously proved us wrong by showing that his move wasn't a waste at all. At the top of the Keutenberg he had Wegmann in sight, while Lagutin was already gobbled up by the pack.
The rampage continued with Gilbert closing down Wegmann's last bit of advantage in a matter of seconds. In the meantime he also managed to build a big gap over the other favourites.
A minute behind the two leaders came the next group, led by Joaquim Rodriguez and Frank Schleck. Fuglsang still in here together with Posthuma, while Martens got dropped after being blocked.
At the foot of the Cauberg, the favourite group had the two leaders in sight, but it was probably already too late. In between we had Simon Gerrans, who decided to track them down by himself.
Fuglsang placed himself perfectly, on Roman Kreuziger's wheel just before the final turn towards Cauberg. Both Schlecks and Thomas Dekker also well placed near the front, while Purito was gone.
I think you understand yourselves what happened at the front when the Cauberg started to show it's first steep gradients. If not, then the picture will tell you. Wegmann had absolutely nothing to hold on with.
That left Philippe Gilbert with an easy victory. Must be very satisfying to get such sweet revenge for last year's bad luck. Seeing this domination, he'll be very, very hard to beat in Flèche and Liège too.
Only Gerrans managed to kick past Wegmann in the finale, defending his second place from last year. Also a great result for the German in third. Leukemans. Rodriguez and Schleck A. completed the Top 5. The first of those after blocking the rest up the narrow road.
Our own hope, Fuglsang, had pretty decent legs on the final climb and stayed on Kreuziger's wheel the whole way up Cauberg, after finding no space to come around. He beat his former captain Schleck F. however!
After yet another classic beginning under a ferocious pace, a group of five formed a small breakaway group at last, just after the top of the first passage of the Mur de Huy. Szmyd, Docker, Galland, Cazaux and Di Grégorio were the names present in it.
Some time later the group added two riders to it. Two quite notable names too, in the shapes of Ivan Basso and Laurens Ten Dam.
Even further into the race than that, yet another rider jumped off in pursuit. This time a name we all recognize by now, Sergey Lagutin.
The breakaway moved really fast through the race, and with just ten kilometres to go, they still held a minute and a half's advantage. This triggered an attack from Frank Schleck, who got strong company from Philippe Gilbert, Giovanni Visconti and Jakob Fuglsang.
Gilbert left the others in the dust like it was nothing and then started to hunt down the remnants of the breakaway, where Basso was now solo at the front after shaking the rest off up the penultimate climb.
Fast Phil made his way to the front just as we took the right turn leading up to Mur de Huy. Ten Dam and Basso were still trying to hang on, but the main field was coming back quickly now.
As you understand, Gilbert just blew the two early escapees off his back wheel up the steep grades and then cruised up the climb to clinch yet another dominant victory atop. No opposition for him today.
Ten Dam and Basso got gobbled up by the other favourites up the final climb, ironically leaving second place for the eternal runner-up, Andy Schleck. A slightly surprising Iuri Trofimov rounded off the podium, overhauling Joaquim Rodriguez in that battle.
Fuglsang didn't have his best day and also got slightly boxed in during the final sprint, which gave him a heavy push down the results sheet. In the end a 21st place, one step above last year's top here, 22nd.
Impressive win by Gilbert, again... Think he's going for the treble with also the LBL-win.
And for your team: with being bad positioned, it's almost impossible to get a good result in Fleche... Better luck for La Doyenne.
OmegaPharma is totally dominating classics. PR, Ronde, Amstel and Fleche now. Great report as always, truly enjoyable to read. It wasn't your day, but hopefully you are going to take Top 10 at LBL.
Thank you! OPQS are indeed really dominating. And imagine if Boonen wasn't out by injury!
Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Report
Just like in Amstel and Flèche, the breakaway was popular among the riders. Daniel Wampach was the one we decided to try to place in there today, so he did everything he could to follow every attack in the early kilometres.
He eventually found himself in a group of around ten riders, chasing a surprisingly strong leading duo. The names - Luis Leon Sánchez and Alfredo Balloni. Very interesting, since both were named as outsiders today.
Some time later, an attack from Nicolas Roche brought Josep Jufré and Stijn Steels up to them. The chasing group with Wampach were still trying to make the junction, struggling to do so.
The main field eventually started to give chase, reducing both the break's advantage and the number of riders in the peloton in the process. Halfway through the race, we had around 70 riders left in the group.
We then jump a bit longer into the race, to the foot of la Redoute. At the front of the race, we were now down to a leading group of three, after that Jufré and Steels both had to let go up the previous climb.
Behind, the chase was on more or less maximum speed. To avoid frustrating blocks, we moved Fuglsang to the very front of the group just as the road started climbing up the narrow Redoute climb.
Our tactic worked perfectly. Fuglsang reached the top of the Redoute still in pole position, and still protected by Geschke, while they were desperately fighting for position behind. Martens was again unlucky and got blocked and dropped. Same with Alejandro Valverde!
In the following descent, a group of fifteen formed. Fuglsang and Geschke representing us, together with most of the big names, apart from Valverde and Martens. Still some way to go.
On top of the day's next climb, the Roche-aux-Faucons, it was at last game over for the three who had been in front the whole day. The end of the breakaway and also the start of the real racing, and even more action.
The attacks started to come when we hit the steep Saint-Nicolas, five kilometres from the line. Wout Poels with the first jump, followed by no one else than Philippe Gilbert. Joaquim Rodriguez doing the work in the group, with Fuglsang glued onto his back wheel.
But when Gilbert and Poels created a gap to the rest, Rodriguez couldn't resist bridging across at the very top of the Saint-Nicolas. They still couldn't build any big advantage, as there was hard chase behind.
All back together for the sprint. Fuglsang unfortunately in a bad position at the back, while the three recently caught escapees were in the lead, together with the GreenEDGE duo Gerrans and Evans.
The Belgian and the Spanish champions moved up side by side at the front once the road started to rise towards the final incline. Fuglsang had found his way up to a better position, just behind Evans.
Rodriguez just couldn't match Gilbert's incredible strength in the end, allowing the undoubted king of the Ardennes to raise his arms up in the air for the third time this week. Pure superiority. Evans in third.
Fuglsang faded more and more the steeper the final hill got and fell back to 8th, repeating his top result from Amstel. More or less what we expected from him. Apart from Flèche, a successful Ardennes streak for us!
