Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov can be snapped up for an amazing £1.3 million in the summer of 2009.

A ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport yesterday now effectively allows a player to breach his contract after a "protected period" and pay his club only the value of his remaining wages in compensation.

The Independent says the CAS decision leaves Manchester United and Chelsea target Berbatov able to leave White Hart Lane next year for the equivalent of one year's wages.

And if I remember correctly Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Man Utd for 13million due to the same ruling.

If that happens, it's the end of all sports as we know them. Suddenly all the best athletes will be at all the best teams instantly.

rumour now has it that Afonso Alves who went to Middlesbrough last week instead of AZ who claim to have a contract with his signature on it has 2 pasports and that he is actually older. Its said that this could be a reason why Tottenham didnt want him all of a sudden last summer

Stupid Manchester. Currently, 1-0 to Tottenham, and they are in control of the match Sad

I have betted on a victory for Manchester. I never bet, but I tried today, and I want to win! Wink

Unlucky Crue, but I would never take a bet on Man Utd against Tottenham, the games they compete in are always strange and quite unpredictable...I just keep thinking back to a classic a few seasons ago at White Hart Lane: Tottenham were winning 3-0 at half-time, and Man Utd came out in the second half and blew them away...final score 5-3!!!Smile

Full Stop!

Wherever you got that from....they're idiots. I thought it was something else, but no, it's the "contract stability" ruling from September 2001. I've basically spent these last six and a half years since then thinking "why the hell hasn't any team taken advantage yet?". The thing is that players after a certain age can leave the club after a few years of their contract simply by paying back the salary they'll be due until the end of the contract.

This is the reason clubs have spent these years constantly renewing the contracts of players who still have two years or so left on their contract.

So it's perfectly normal. carry on. (also: it does not apply to Ronaldo. only to players older than 24)

The Capello era started with a 2-1 win over Switzerland. We played some pretty nice football in the second half. Bentley was very good, totally justified kicking Becks out of the team. Wes Brown is just about one of the worst players i have ever seen play for England. Joe Cole is still England's best player by a long way. Calamity James managed to come for a cross and completely miss it once again:lol:

Overall the team played quite well, and Rooney's work rate was phenominal

The English Premier League is considering playing some matches overseas, BBC Sport has learned.

At a meeting in London on Thursday, all 20 clubs agreed to explore a proposal to extend the season to 39 games.

Those 10 extra games would be played at venues around the world, with cities bidding for the right to stage them.

It is understood the additional fixtures could be determined by a draw but that the top-five teams could be seeded to avoid playing each other.

Premier League's overseas plan explained

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "The 'international round' is an exciting and innovative proposal that needs careful consideration before being introduced.

"However, this concept recognises the truly global appeal of the Barclays Premier League whilst understanding that the traditions of the English game have always underpinned our success.

"We believe that an 'international round' of matches will enhance the strength of the Barclays Premier League as a competition; create extra interest in all 20 Premier League Clubs at home and abroad; and allow increased investment in talent development and acquisition, facilities as well as our football development and community programmes."

The Football Association has given its provisional support to the plans.

"We understand the reasons for this proposals and the benefits it can bring to English football as a whole," said an FA source.

A final decision on the proposals will not be made until January 2009.

Should the plans get the go-ahead, the new round of games will take place in January 2011 with points from those extra games counting towards the final league table.

It is believed each chosen venue would host two matches over a weekend.

Cities in Asia, Middle East and North America are likely to show a strong interest in hosting the extra games.

BBC sports editor Mihir Bose says the Premier League's decision to explore such a move is a "logical" one.

"The growth of the Premier League has been impressive in the last 15 years thanks to the sale of television rights in this country," he said.

"But now the market in the United Kingdom is becoming saturated and it is the overseas market which is now the big target area."

The Premier League's income from the sale of overseas TV rights has already increased from £178m in 2001 to £625m for the current deal that runs until 2010.

Broadcaster NowTV paid around £100m for the rights to Hong Kong alone.

Premier League games are broadcast to over 600m homes in 202 countries worldwide, while an estimated 1bn people watched the Premier League game between Arsenal and Manchester United in November 2007.

A number of top-flight clubs already play matches around the world as they seek to capitalise on the huge global interest in the English game.

Manchester United are regular visitors to Asia, Middle East and America while other clubs are beginning to follow their lead.

"This is a chance for the Premier League to showcase its product around the world," added Bose.

"Some fans may feel aggrieved, but their concerns will be outweighed in the eyes of the clubs by the financial advantages.

"The clubs will see this as a chance to make more money so they can invest in new facilities and better players."

There is also likely to be a big scramble for the right to host the extra games.

"It will be like cities bidding for the Olympic Games or the World Cup," explained Bose.

The Premier League's proposal mirrors moves in other sports, notably American Football.

Miami Dolphins and New York Giants met at Wembley in October, the first competitive NFL game outside the Americas.

"The globalisation of sport is both an opportunity and a challenge; one that needs addressing in a responsible way," added Scudamore.

"We are a better competition for being a cosmopolitan league and have benefited from our increased international reach.

"Nonetheless, it is critical we retain our English character by improving our efforts to produce home-grown talent, deepening our commitment to community engagement and continuing our investment in the grass-roots."

Basically we're copying the AmericansSmile

WHAT????!!!

wait. I'm dead serious for a moment. McQuaid is an idiot and makes a lot of bad decisions, but expansion is NOT one of them!

Not expanding is the horrible decision that can't be made. Not expanding will benefit the french, belgian, spanish and italian markets slightly while dooming all others and the future of the sport long term.
Expanding brings big benefits to everyone.

Please, do not fall into the ASO's crap. McQuaid is an idiot and I'd rather have him imprisioned, but the ASO are worse. Remember that the way things are now the ASO is one of the few who profits.

Also, Addy, Ice Hockey was the sport that started that trend. Seems like a good idea so far Smile

Have you SEEN the proposed route for the tour of America?? Completely stupid.
Pat McQuaid is planning to use these races to patch up the pro tour so it doesn't lose total credibility.....desperation comes to mind...

They're changing it - they're making it smaller every time, it is now close to a reasonable route Wink
