Tour de Romandie

Stage 5: Vevery - Chatel

I don’t expect this stage to be hard enough to make much difference in the GC. If possible Lasse should try and get a few mountain points as that jersey is not secured either.

Tony Martin made good use of his team throughout the first 50 km keeping every break within a minute.

15 km from the intermediate sprint I sent my guys to the front and no one was willing to contest Fuglsang for the six points and seconds. This could prove important in a race as close as this.

On the first climb Chavez and Landa managed to get away and in spite of several teams working together to keep some sort of speed in the peloton they managed to build a gap much bigger than I had hoped. With 32 km to go they have 6 minutes to the 23-rider group with Fuglsang, Martin and Contador. Unfortunately Jakob has no helpers left in the group.

In spite of plenty of attacking inside the favourites group on the second climb the main group stay together. For a large part thanks to some great work by Jakob.
With 11 km to go for the front duo they have 3’40’’.

Landa takes the stage, but thanks to lots of attacks from everyone including Fuglsang the main group managed to win a lot of time. Not only on the two youngsters but also on Tony Martin, who cracked in the last 20 km!

Pew, that was close…
A lot of hard work paid in the end. Jakob is back in yellow, but the final stage will be a fierce battle where every second counts!

You got this fuglsang

Good race for Fuglsang
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

sutty: I very much agree Wink

Ian: Thanks. This could very well be the closest Tour de Romandie in history!

jakstar: Lets hope so...

PCM rulezz: In deed. Time to overdo himself on the final stage!

I will start playing the final stage in a moment, so the report should be up sometime today

1 second... Romandie is always very close in PCM 11, think I won it in my story (Gesink was the one) with a margin of 1 second to EB Hagen...

Tour de Romandie

Stage 6: Sion – Sion
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-61_zps20bf9b59.jpg
Everyone is highly motivated in the team bus this morning. This race was a target for Jakob but we didn’t expect it to go this well. Now it is time to secure the win and hopefully the mountain jersey as well.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-62_zps1e027ca1.jpg
Marino is the first to attack right after the start. Since he has no mountain points that’s fine by us and since the Frenchman actually isn’t much of a climber he never gets more than two minutes.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-63_zps92db8d38.jpg
Lasse takes a hard pull on the front the last two km preventing the competition from taking points.
The next mountain top is not quite as easy, but Lasse keeps the worst competition behind and the jersey is now secured!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-64_zps49d21cec.jpg
With 37 km and a mountain to go Marino has been accompagnied by Baer and Arashiro four minutes ahead of the peloton.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-65_zps0610f02a.jpg
As expected all the great climbers attack on Ovronnaz and Jakob is fighting with all he’s got not to loose too much time as he can not keep up with the best.
When Fuglsang cross the top Rodríguez has 12 seconds to Contador, Gesink, Landa and Henao with Fuglsang in a 30-rider group a further 35 seconds behind.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-66_zps165e97db.jpg
Luckily Jakob is a great descender and with 12 km to go the break has been caught!
No one else seem to have realized how close this is gonna be and Jakob has no trouble picking up the six bonus seconds. At this point we just have to hope neither Chavez nor Landa wins the stage…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/04-25-Romandie-67_zps713d0140.jpg
El Fares and Carrara open the sprint simultaneously. Jakob picks the wrong wheel and is caught behind Carrara in the sprint.

But we can live with ISD taking a 1-2 on the stage – after all we take three jerseys!!

dienblad: Thanks. It really was a relief to actually pull it off on the last stage. Especially with wet roads on the descent...

sutty: In deed it was. Looks like they're ready for the Giro Wink

Rider of the month: Tom Boonen, RadioShack - Nissan. King of the cobbles and WT-leader – not much more to say really…

Nordic rider of the month: Jakob Fuglsang, Volvo – STARK. A disappointing Ardennes-week was compensated by a massive effort in Tour de Romandie. Based on a strong tactical sense and some good TT’s Fuglsang surprised everyone by taking the overall win.

Jakob Fuglsang, Volvo - STARK

A month of ups and downs for you. How could you transform that much from the Ardennes to Romandie?
Firstly the TT’s were a big advantage for me, but then it was all the small things. In the Ardennes I felt terrible as soon as I got on my bike every day and this last week I felt terrible whenever I got off my bike.

How did you find it in you to beat the likes of Contador and Rodríguez?
To be honest I didn’t. I was far from their level on the climbs and had one of the stages finished uphill I would not have won. I had a couple of good TT's and then it was more a case of no one being able to beat me rather than me beating rveryone...
Just as I wouldn’t have won if the others had been aware of the bonus seconds. This was a tactical win rather than a show of power.

Is that what your new team is about for you?
You could say that. We will always be the underdogs in the World Tour races as none of our riders are among the best in the world on paper, but with good tactics and strong teamwork we are able to achieve more than the names on the roster justify. Do I have to remind you how many mountain jerseys we have won this far?

And now of to the Giro: Will you win that too?
I think not, but then again I didn’t expect to win Romandie…
I will be aiming for a top 10, but there are a lot of better climbers than me in the peloton.

Rumours has it that Shimano is ready to step up their engagement and become sole sponsor when Argos stops their sponsorship at the end of the season.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/transfer_zpsdf01994d.jpg

Astana is determined to sign Levi Leipheimer, who will be 41 years old at the start of next season.

BMC looks like they might be losing a good few of their captains after this season (again). They have named Robert Gesink as their main target in the transfer season.

Rabobank is looking for revenge after RadioShack signed Boonen last season, so now the Dutch side have named Cancellara their main transfer objective.

ISD – Ferrari want a GC-rider to supplement Scarponi and they have set their eyes on RadioShack Canadian Hesjedal.

Cancellara and Boonen swapping teams if Rabobank can sign him. That will be very interesting
