The hilly stage won't make much of a difference GC wise, although one or another rider might lose some time due to unattentiveness. The finish looks like a perfect opportunity for a punchy sprinter. Another strike by Gilbert?
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
Another stage perfectly suited for Sagan. We will take part in the chase, probably supported by Omega Pharma, and then try to prevent another Gilbert win.
Live Ticker
Km 25:
Just like yesterday, it's mostly Vacansoleil pushing on the first kilometers. No one could get away yet.
.
Km 35:
The next break includes Edvald Boasson Hagen, a rider too dangerous to let him go. Liquigas does the pace now.
.
Km 76:
And it worked. Only three riders are in front now: Martijn Maaskant, Steve Morabito and Martin Pedersen are three minutes in front.
.
Km 124:
Over the top of the first and hardest mountain, the advance already started to decrease. It's at 6'30 with 75 kms to go.
.
Km 148:
It's again Liquigas who does the pace with a bit more than 50 kms to go. The peloton has decreased to 64 riders but all important ones are there.
.
Km 165:
Now it's mostly Unicef at the front of the pack. Valverde must have good legs today. The advance of the leading trio is below two minutes now.
.
Km 170:
With 29 kms to go, Rabobank's Russian champion Alexandr Kolobnev attacks. But the pack rides a high pace at the moment...
.
Km 195:
With 4 kms to go, the last escapees Kolobnev and Maaskant are almost caught. Surprisingly, Gilbert is nowhere to be seen near the front.
.
Km 197:
Nibali pulls Sagan to the front. Gilbert (green) is there now as well as Valverde.
.
Km 198:
Nibali and Sagan start the sprint with a small advance but that must have cost a lot of energy. Is it enough?
.
Km 198:
Sagan is still in front but Gilbert and Valverde are faster...
.
Km 199:
But it's enough! What an amazing performance by Sagan! Nibali comes in fifth, completing a fantastic day for the team.
.
Km 199:
Dominik Nerz is full of joy for his room mate and friend Peter Sagan. He finishes easily within the first group on place 26.

Dominik's Comment
What a run we have! Third stage win in four stages! Finally, Sagan could deliver. God, he so deserved that! I'm very happy for him. This time, the lead out was perfect and even Gilbert couldn't stop us.
Apart from that, lots of kudos for Damiano Caruso and Marco Marcato, who worked their asses off today and have a big part of today's win. All in all, a great team work.
For me, the day was, as expected, pretty calm. I had no problems on the ascents and finished in the first group.
Tommorow is the first of two consecutive mountain top finishes, probably decisive for the Vuelta overall, as they are the last MTFs of the race. Important days await us!
@ Neillster: Thank you. It was time for a "big" win for Sagan
@ sutty: Nibali's lead should be pretty sure by now. Oh, and before I forget: A special, huge thanks for your constant commenting. Although I might not answer to every single one, it's great to see that you seem to enjoy this story
@ Freitas & Pellizotti: Thanks guys. It's indeed amazing, I think I have never played such an "easy" race on extreme. My season planning pays off really well.
@ Alakagom: I wouldn't forget Gilbert here, he has also three stage wins already. But yeah, so far, I really can't complain. And Nerz is surely not overshadowed by the two big names so far, and who knows, it might even get better...
This is really a tough stage. 169 kilometers with lots of ups and downs and of course the climb up to Lagos de Covadonga are a hard challenge for the riders. We will see a nice battle of the overall contenders on the last kilometers.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
As I said yesterday, it's the first of two consecutive mountain top finishes, and if Vincenzo survives them without big losses, victory will be his. But in his shape at the moment, his aim is not to not lose time but rather to gain more. Or simpler: He wants the stage win today. I want to keep my Top 15 overall and if possible gain more time on Peter to comquer the white jersey. We won't send anyone into the break as it probably has no chance.
Live Ticker
Km 6:
Vicente Reynes is today's first attacker. The weather is horrible, so some exercising isn't the worst today.
.
Km 43:
10 riders are in the break of the day. At the first sprint point, they're four minutes in front. Prominent names are Simon Gerrans, Paul Martens and Andrew Talansky.
.
Km 69:
Over the second mountain, the advance grew to more than ten minutes. Exactly 100 kms to go.
.
Km 102:
Project stage win is taken seriously: As the advance of the escapees approaches 15 minutes, Liquigas overtakes the lead in the pack, which streches a lot under the high pace and the strong crosswinds.
.
Km 142:
Juan Jose Cobo, sixth in the GC, crashed. His team mates try to get him back into the peloton.
.
Km 155:
The escapees enter the last 14 steep kilometers with an advance of 8'30. Andriy Grivko attacks, Van Huffel (FDJ) and Gerrans follow.
.
Km 160:
Again, Joaquim Rodriguez is the first one to attack Euskaltel and Liquigas.
.
Km 163:
Sagan and Szmyd pull out the hammer and Nerz slowly falls back.
.
Km 164:
With 5 kms to go, Sanchez attacks. Sagan leads the chase for Nibali, Valverde and Anton are with them.
.
Km 166:
Nibali attacks as Sanchez and Rodriguez are still in front. Also, the escapees will probably win.
.
Km 166:
Nerz's tactics again pay off. He overtakes Sagan and Szmyd.
.
Km 168:
Nibali and Sanchez enter the last kilometer a bit behind Rodriguez.
.
Km 169:
The surprising winner today is Vitaliy Buts. He could shake off all his breakaway companions.
.
Km 169:
Rodriguez overtook Van Huffel and Gerrans and comes in second. He also takes the lead in the mountain ranking. Nibali follows soon on eigth place.
.
Km 169:
Nerz wasn't too good on the last kilometers, Szmyd overtook him again but he stays in front of Sagan.

Dominik's Comment
We can't be satisfied with today's outcome. We underestimated both the breakaway and Rodriguez' attack. Today, Nibali didn't have the legs to counter them all. His time loss is minimal, though. I had a decent day. Without the break, I would be 13th. I couldn't get more time on Sagan, maybe tomorrow.
Otherwise, there's not much to say. Tomorrow will be very hard again.
The last mountain top finish of the race brings maybe the last chance for pure climbers to gain some real time. The stage isn't too hard until the final, which should be a nice battle between the likes of Nibali, Sanchez and Rodriguez.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
We will approach this stage very defensively. We won't do any work but instead send someone, if possible Damiano Caruso, into the break. On the final climb, Nibali will simply counter the important attacks and then try to go for the stage win. I'll just give my best to gain time on Peter.
Live Ticker
Km 3:
The first attacks are coming, Marco Marcato increases the pace as Caruso is far back in the pack.
.
Km 8:
4 riders are a bit in front as Damiano Caruso attacks.
.
Km 41:
Caruso managed to get into the first group of seven riders. Several more escapees are spread between them and the peloton.
.
Km 77:
Six riders cross the second mountain together. Caruso is on the paper the second best climber, next to Benat Intxausti (Movistar). Their advance to the pack grew to 11 minutes.
.
Km 79:
Over that mountain, Mikel Nieve surprisingly increased the pace, causing a split in the pack: Only 24 riders are left in the main group, including the Top 5 but the places 6-12 are missing. Nerz and Sagan (14 and 13) accompany Nibali.
.
Km 93:
On the next flat part, though, most of them get back to the front. The advance of the escapees went down to 9 minutes.
.
Km 133:
Euskaltel does most of the work but Liquigas is right there in the second line. With 55 kms, the escapees are less than five minutes away.
.
Km 170:
Only 26 riders are left around the red jersey at the bottom of the climb. All major riders including the Liquigas Top 4 are there but the places 9-12 are missing. Sagan and Nerz might advance a couple of places today. The escapees are almost caught.
.
Km 171:
GC's fifth Igor Anton tries a daring escape to gain some time. 17 kms to go, that seems a bit early.
.
Km 175:
The breakaway including Anton is caught as Rodriguez attacks. Nibali has to be careful now.
.
Km 178:
And he is. Taking the lead himself, Nibali catches Rodriguez three kilometers later.
.
Km 179:
Szmyd, Sagan and Nerz can't keep up with the very front but only 9 riders are in front of them.
.
Km 180:
Anton and Sanchez go and Nibali immediatly increases the pace. Still 8 kms to go, how many times can the Italian counter his opponents?
.
Km 181:
Nerz and Txurruka are the only ones who are left behind the leading group of 8. Sagan and Szmyd couldn't follow his pace.
.
Km 183:
The band begins to play! With 5 kms to go, Nibali gets away. Sanchez is behind him.
.
Km 185:
Nerz is riding the climb of his life. With a solid, high pace, he rides towards a Top 10 result today and the white jersey.
.
Km 185:
With an amazing acceleration, Rodriguez catches up with Nibali. 3 kms from the finish, it becomes obvious that it'll be between those two today.
.
Km 187:
The sprint is in full play and Nibali has a small advance. But Rodriguez is faster! Will it be enough for Nibali's fourth stage win?
.
Km 188:
YES! He's the measure of all things here in Spain!
.
Km 188:
And here comes Dominik Nerz! Closely outsprinted by Daniel Moreno, he scores a fantastic 10th place! That means white and 12th overall.
.
Km 188:
Peter Sagan experiences his first breakdown. Eventually, his bad regeneration strikes and he loses 4'38 on Dominik Nerz. Unfortunately, he also falls back in the GC and is now on 16.

Dominik's Comment
Oh happy day! What an experience. I pushed myself to the limits and can now proudly say that this was one, maybe the best performance of my entire career. Sure, I already scored a GT Top 10, but only from a breakaway and this was one of the toughest mountain stages.
Also, I dare say that Vincenzo can't lose this Vuelta anymore. 5 minutes on Rodriguez, 6 on Sanchez. And only two mountain stages left, both with long descents in front of the finish, and we all know that descending is one of his strong points. Plus, there's the 36 kms of time trial, where he'll gain time at least on Rodriguez.
So we have five stage wins now, and if Nibali wants it, I'm sure he can also overtake the mountain jersey which would bring us all classifications. What an amazing race this is.
Tomorrow is the second rest day, another blog entry is waiting for you then!
Amazing cycling by Dominik, 10th place in a tough stage in the Vuelta, and getting 12th in the GC, as well as leading the U25-ranks, is awesome!!
Really hope you can keep it untill Madrid!
New stage win by Canibali! Nerz only better and better! finally knocked out Sagan.. Looking great for the future in the rest of Vuelta! What a dreamrace so far
Greetings from León, where we are passing this rest day. It's quite a nice city and together with Peter Sagan, who became a very good friend during the past two weeks, Marco Marcato and Vincenzo Nibali, we went visiting the Basilica San Isidoro, an impressive building.
It's also time for the last hint regarding our main signing:
Our man has had an amazing spring last season. No one was as constant as he was in the spring classics but he just couldn't score that one big win. Afterwards, he couldn't show much. He changed teams in the off season but that didn't do him too well. While he still had decent results, he couldn't repeat his great performances of the year before.
Do you know it by know? Those who can guess it right get an honourable mention in my next blog entry ;-)
For the Vuelta, there are only 6 stages left. Two mountain stages and the time trial among them, but no real „killer stage“ anymore. I will do my best to maybe enter the Top 10 while up in front, only the fight for the places 2 and 3 is still exciting.
Coming up next is a review of the month August, then the Vuelta reports continue.
With two stage wins, Cunego won the race quite easily. After he lost some time in a mountain time trial, he took two stages and enough time to achieve an undisputed win.
Race Results
Several World Tour races took place in August. Anton dominated in Poland, Tony Martin could celebrate his second big win after the Dauphiné, triumphing in the Eneco Tour. Chavanel completed a good month for Leopard in Hamburg.
World Tour Ranking
Tom Boonen vaults himself to third position with fourth places in the Eneco Tour and the Vattenfall Cyclassics. Anton benefits from his win in Poland while Nibali is collecting points at the Vuelta.
The places didn't change but Leopard got closer. After Anton's win and Chavanel's triumph in Hamburg, the team even was in the lead for some days but Nibali's points from the Vuelta brought the Italian team to the front again.
Skil slowly enters the danger zone again. While GreenEdge and FDJ could almost score no points at all, BMC made quite a big leap forward. But the three last teams are incredibly close together. It's very probable that two of those will be relegated eventually.
CQ Ranking
Contador got overtaken by Cunego (3rd Ouest Plouay, Lombarda) and Nibali (Eneco and Vuelta). Anton also made a big leap, just like in the World Tour.
No changes here either. Liquigas extended their lead, Katusha and Leopard had a good month, too.
Cofidis can plan for the World Tour next year. And since Geox will fold, Saur is pretty safe as well. CCC Polsat, the big surprise in this ranking, shouldn't have the class to overtake them in the last two months.
Victory Ranking
With his wins in Lombarda, Cunego extends his lead in the ranking. Rojas and Boonen could each add one win to their palmares. Gilbert made the biggest leap forwar.d
Liquigas extends their lead with 10 wins this month. T-Mobile and especially Cofidis did really well, too.
Monthly Awards
Anton gets a well-deserved award for the overall and three stages in Poland. Patrick Gretsch won a stage of the Volta a Portugal.
Preview September
10.09.
Giro del Lazio
10.09.
Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec
11.09.
Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal
Our schedule for September is very thin. Well, we're still having the Vuelta until the 11th. But apart from that, we're only competing in three classics. Cunego leads us in Canada while Tiziano Dall'Antonia will have a shot at the sponsor goal in Italy. A win is required, which is highly unlikely, but it's a one-star-goal anyway.Edited by cunego59 on 19-03-2012 21:31
